Re: Need Help Restoring a Deleted pub.edb in 5.5

2003-12-08 Thread Willem Jackson
FOLDERS RESTORED! Thanks again for your help!

Boy, do I feel stupid! Please don't pile on -- I'm suffering enough SHAME
 and GUILT already...

 Here's my sad story:

On the Friday after Thanksgiving (office closed, I thought I would show a
little initiative and finally do that ESEUTIL work I had been putting off
for 18 months. I had shut down Exchange and copied my on my 8gb priv.edb
and 11mb pub.edb to a backup hard drive. Because the ESEUTIL process
aborted halfway through the process on priv.edb, I decided to instead just
put things back the way they were and go home to discuss the day's tragic
events with my good friend JACK DANIELS. :)

(Maybe I will revisit ESEUTIL over the Christmas holidays, but that's
 another story.)

Anyway, when I came back to work on Monday, I started getting reports that
the Public Folders were gone. For reasons still unknown to me, I must have
either MOVED or DELETED pub.edb from its original location. Exchange had
evidently rebuilt a pub.edb file, but it was just 2 mb with no visbile
data and only a couple of default folders. (The original entries for the
Public Folders were still showing up in Exchange Administrator for what
 it's worth.)

I found the copy of 11 mb pub.edb that I had made on Friday.

What is the best/easiest procedure for a moron like myself to get the file
 back into Exchange?

Have people stored any new info in the public folders since then?

No. This is not a concern.

If you slide the old pub.edb in there, the new work will be gone.

You probably will be better off restoring that old pub.edb to another
server (in a separate Exchange organization) and then
exporting/importing data from that other server to the production
 server.

Only 1 Exchange Server in this organization.

If it is as easy as just sliding the file back to MDBDATA, that would be
excellent. What other steps are necessary to do this?

Take a full online backup. Shut down the Information Store cleanly. Take a
full offline backup (so you have a backup copy in case you do something
stupid again--Sorry, I couldn't resist) of the full Information Store, both
private and public stores. Take another if you want to be really sure.
Delete the log files. Replace the pub.edb file with the old one.

That ought to work.

I never said I was doing an offline defrag of the pub.edb. I was doing an

deleted.

HELP E2k and E2k3

2003-11-03 Thread Raji Arulambalam
Hi

I have a single Exchange 2000 server that used the default SMTP VS to
deliver and pick up internet mail from a smart host. Which worked fine.
I wanted to upgrade to E2k3, so installed a new second server and installed
E2k3 on this. Install worked fine. I moved a test user to the new server.
This test user is able to send mail messages out but is unable to recieve
messages from the Internet. The sender gets a NDR saying undiliverable
because of a mail loop , Status: 4.4.6.

I also noticed that messages between the two servers is being sent out to
the smart host by the first E2k server and keeps looping.

Do I have to configure the default SMTP VS on the second E2k3 server? OR do
I remove the smart host settings from the 1st server and configure a SMTP
Connector to send and receive Internet mail from the smart host.?

Help Please.

Cheers

Raji

We have been having the same issue with emails going to sc.rr.com. If you
dig around on the Road Runner help pages, you can find the network status

Subject: Can anybody help with this ?

My organization is having problems sending email to a user @tampabay.rr.com
I tried to do an NSLOOKUP and found a host of different MX records for this
domain. However when I try to telnet to them I can't seem to connect. Can
anybody try and let me know the results ? The problem is that our emails do
reach them but after a long delay. They claim that they haven't had any
problems from other people and that the problem only comes from our end.
Help would be appreciated ! Thanks

2003-10-30 Thread RBHATIA
This is getting stranger.
When I do an NSLOOKUP, this is the result I get -
tampabay.rr.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = flmx03.mgw.rr.com
tampabay.rr.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = flmx04.mgw.rr.com
tampabay.rr.com MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = txmx01.mgw.rr.com
tampabay.rr.com MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = txmx02.mgw.rr.com
tampabay.rr.com MX preference = 30, mail exchanger = florida.mgw.rr.com
tampabay.rr.com MX preference = 100, mail exchanger = vamx02.mgw.rr.com
tampabay.rr.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = flmx01.mgw.rr.com
tampabay.rr.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = flmx02.mgw.rr.com

flmx03.mgw.rr.com internet address = 65.32.1.50
flmx04.mgw.rr.com internet address = 65.32.1.49

However, I tried telnetting to these IP addresses, I can't connect to them.

I'm receiving emails fine from this person (almost immediately). I checked

Road Runner is apparently having major email problems at the current time.
We have been having the same issue with emails going to sc.rr.com. If you
dig around on the Road Runner help pages, you can find the network status
message. Until they get the problems worked out, I wouldn't try to hard at
troubleshooting the problem.

I am trying to connect Outlook/ over RPC-HTTP

I cant get into outlook - because it prompt me for the username/password

RoadRunner is notorious for blocking blocks of IP address. Your NDR
should include a URL referring you back to rr. All you can do is get
your ISP to email them and hope that rr releases the block.

We went through this 3 months ago and it took 2 months for rr to release
it. Good luck

This is how we have it configured and working so I do get the messages:

We Collect e-mails that are bounced for several web servers we have that send e-mail
notices from web page visits requesting additional info or when items become available
or is ordered (so the addresses are stored in a DB).

Of course there are those people that can not type, provide invalid addresses or older
ones that are no longer available.

So when we send e-mail and it gets bounced at the server all of these get forwarded to
a special account on our exchange server then sorted into folders (Sort by from
address in originally message) for each server and DB.

This is all no problem

Now I want to extract the information on the reason for the failure..

you know the:

--

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

  Subject: We've received your order!
  Sent: 10/28/2003 11:02 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] on 10/28/2003 11:02 AM
The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report a
specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails, contact your
system administrator.
someserver.com #5.0.0 smtp;550 [EMAIL PROTECTED] unknown user account

--

this is what I'm looking for:

I can't seem to get access to the information in a undeliverable report portion or
have it exported.

1. Anybody have any ideas?

What I'm trying to do is grab all the of the 550 errors so I can create a list of
e-mail accounts that are dead.

2. I also can't seem to create a rule that will filter on this specific information.
If I could then I could create a subfolder then export just the e-mail addresses from
that folder and I've have the list also.

so any help is appricated.

I asked a question and the answer was that i should check that basic auth.

Are you using SSL?? With a store bought Cert. I got about the same from

be working now.. My home grown cert would not install on the client

You could try installing the cert with IE by connecting to https:// OWA

right clicking the outlook icon in the task bar by the time??

Thanks - I did contact PSS and have had great service in the past but
their SLA for a consultant to get back to you is four hours so I thought

Anyway, it seems the issue was related to our AV software. In the early

Since spammers use blind name lists, attempting to get lucky, and hit
all the possible [EMAIL PROTECTED], the Exchange Server wants
 to send NDR
reports to EACH and EVERY piece of Spam mail that comes into
 the system.

You could try ORF from www.vamsoft.com - I've not used it but apparently
it hooks into Active Directory/LDAP at the RCPT TO to validate the
recipient. Another option, though not MS would be a linux/bsd MTA such
as postfix, I use this with an hourly export of the GAL and we reject
around 7000 pieces of mail a week to random/old addresses.

Subject: Help! Mail Queue is all blocked up...

Hello everyone,

I am running Exchange 2000 on an internal server. I am publishing the SMTP
Service on my ISA Box, and I am routing all my mail to Xwall (a popular Spam
package) which in turn routes mail to the Exchange Box.
Xwall runs on Port 25, and Exchange SMTP (incoming) runs on Port 24 (so they
can both coexist on the same box).

Since Xwall has no knowledge of the users on the system, it accepts ALL
stinking e-mail messages, and then forwards them to the Exchange box.
Since spammers use blind name lists, attempting to get lucky, and hit all
the possible [EMAIL PROTECTED], the Exchange Server wants to send NDR reports
to EACH and EVERY piece of Spam mail that comes into the system.

So as you can imagine, I have thousands of messages queued up - and it takes
FOREVER for a LEGIT message, initiated from a user on the system, to
actually make it out of the system and reach the remote mail server for
delivery - because it's competing with all these outgoing NDR (and whatever
else) messages.

What can I do??? Short of running Exchange Raw - so it can deny the message
on the spot (since it has direct knowledge of the users on the system), I
don't know what else to do.

Can anybody help? Are there other suggestions I can try, in order to reduce
my mail congestion problem?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

stinking e-mail messages, and then forwards them to the Exchange box.
Since spammers use blind name lists, attempting to get lucky, and hit
all the possible [EMAIL PROTECTED], the Exchange Server wants to send NDR
reports to EACH and EVERY piece of Spam mail that comes into the system.

So as you can imagine, I have thousands of messages queued up - and it
takes FOREVER for a LEGIT message, initiated from a user on the system,
to actually make it out of the system and reach the remote mail server
for delivery - because it's competing with all these outgoing NDR (and
whatever else) messages.

What can I do??? Short of running Exchange Raw - so it can deny the
message on the spot (since it has direct knowledge of the users on the
system), I don't know what else to do.

Can anybody help? Are there other suggestions I can try, in order to
reduce my mail congestion problem?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Nothing in my event log. The NDR is being generated on the sending end -
not on my server.

It also appears that not all messages are NDRing.

It might be something on the other end. 4.4.1 usally indicates a network
issue. Does it happen for all email sent to those two domains. How was
it

I am working with a relatively new Ex2K build and have had two different
external contacts report intermittent NDR's. There is no PIX firewall in
place and ESMTP verbs have been disabled on our end.

The NDR is 4.4.1 Did not receive the expected protocol response.

Searching the usual sources has turned up nothing.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Calendar Contacts/Blackberry issue--Please help ASAP

2003-09-25 Thread Gonzalez, Alex
I did a booboo on someone's Outlook and I am looking for help. I swapped his
blackberry for a different device and sync'd someone else's calendar and contacts with
his. Now both of them are in his folders. My question is what views do I have to
change to be able to tell whose contacts and calendar is what? We have all versions
of Outlook and OWA. Please help asap if you can I am in trouble.

Thanks,

2003-09-25 Thread Roger Seielstad
Change to an event's view in the calendar or a phone list view in contacts.

Then, through the Field Chooser, add the Modified field (you'll have to
scroll down to All Calendar/Contact Fields), and sort by that. You'll find a
group that were all modified consecutively, which is the result of the sync.

Don't worry - first time this happened to me it was only my CIO.

telnet exmail.macombisd.org 25 gives you:

You first have a question for Macomb ISD's PIX administrator. First order of

no fixup protocol smtp 25. Then get him or her to look at why the pix is refusing

Which version of Exchange please.

Do you have a gateway sitting in front of your Exchange server, or does
Exchange receive mail directly from the Internet.
Do you have @exmail.macombisd.org assigned as a domain you accept mail
for? Assigned as an e-mail address?

Hi Tony and thanks for the reply.

I also have a Advnet.net account that gets the same bounce when sending
directly to the Exchange server (@exmail.macombisd.org).

Our DNS points exmail.macombisd.org to 64.88.83.251. The reverse DNS
lookup points to xmail1 (name of the server).

Hope this makes some kind of sense.

Exchange 2000

I have a POP server that receives mail and forwards to
@exmail.macombisd.org addresses on the Exchange server. All accounts on
the exchange server have two SMTP addresses (1. @exmail.macombisd.org
and @misd.net) (The @misd.net is the POP server it goes through first)
All forwarding mail from the POP server works fine. Just when I send

Do you have a gateway sitting in front of your Exchange server, or does
Exchange receive mail directly from the Internet. Do you have
@exmail.macombisd.org assigned as a domain you accept mail
for? Assigned as an e-mail address?

Just to be semantically correct, POP servers don't receive mail, they
listen for client requests related to retrieving mail via a POP3 enabled
client. SMTP servers receive mail, they then either deliver it locally
or forward it to another host.

Must be the way the Yahoo and Advnet.net mailservers look at my

Any ideas?

What is in the bounce message now that you've disabled the Stupid Mailguard feature?
What antispam/antivirus software do you have in there, and what sort of traffic is it

What is in the bounce message now that you've disabled the Stupid Mailguard
feature? What antispam/antivirus software do you have in there, and what
sort of traffic is it configured to dump?

I had the Mailguard disabled on the PIX.

This is interesting thoughI can receive just fine from my test
Hotmail account. However, I cannot receive from Yahoo or Advnet.net.

Must be the way the Yahoo and Advnet.net mailservers look at my
 mailserver

 Any ideas?

happen when MailGuard has been switched on at a PIX Firewall

Hi Tony and thanks for the reply.

I also have a Advnet.net account that gets the same bounce
 when sending
directly to the Exchange server (@exmail.macombisd.org).

Our DNS points exmail.macombisd.org to 64.88.83.251. The reverse DNS
lookup points to xmail1 (name of the server).

Hope this makes some kind of sense.

RE: Creating an automated Bulletin Board System HELP

2003-09-17 Thread Ron
THat is the direction I'd prefer to go. However:

We are migrating from a mainframe mail system that has a Bulletin Board
feature. They want me to duplicate the feature.

When you subscribe to their BB, you get any new messages to the BBs that
you subscribed to.

I'm trying to figure out how I can manipulate exchange and or outlook
(through forms) to interact with Active Directory.

I envision this:

A user opens a subscription form. They choose the BB they want to
subscribe to and enter their username.
The form adds that username to a distribution list.
That distribution list is set as the Forward recipient for that BB (Public
Folder)

When someone posts to the BB, everyone in the Dist list gets a copy.

Sound OK?

Well I don't know about using Exchange 2K and Outlook 2K but you're
trying to create a bulletin board right? Take a look at Invision Power
Board:

It's one of the best boards out there, best of all, unlike vBulletin
it's free.

A troll ate the first post - Was Help Help,I'm too dense to figure this out

2003-09-16 Thread Jasa, Ken
Or maybe it was a filter...

This is a weird problem. I hope I have described it well enough for it
to make sense...

This site had 3 servers:

Server 1 - NT4 SP6A Echange 5.5 SP4 - set to be retired Server 2 - 2000
SP3 Echange 5.5 SP4 - Migrated from another domain using Move Server
Wizard. No Public Folder Store.
Server 3 - 2000 SP3 Echange 5.5 SP4

Rehomed PF's on server 1 to server 3

Stopped the services on server 1 for serveral days then removed it
according to KB article - 152959 (removing first server..) Server still
connected to the network.

Everyone was happy and could access the PF's they needed until we took
server1 offline. People on server 2 started having Outlook hang on
starting. Plugged the server back in without Exchange services running -
problem dissapears.

Makes no sense, so I have re-checked that I removed Server 1 correctly
from the org and checked the home server and replica information on the
PF's that were rehomed.

Next, created a Public Information Store on Server 2 and added replicas
of the PF's that were rehomed to server 3 - Should not be necessary, but
nothing was making sense. Same problem still.

We have monitored the connections coming into server 1 and have
determined that when the clients on Server 2 start Outlook their
machines do try to connect to server 1

Thanks for any help.

definitions in the registry, find references to the old server and
replace with new server). For some reason Outlook did not automatically

Does the mailbox store on server 2 point to 3 for

Sometimes when I've seen this, we've had to refresh

Subject: A troll ate the first post - Was Help Help,I'm too dense to

Exchange Server 2000 / 2003 Phonebook ASP Help

2003-09-16 Thread Mr Budge
I am looking for the best way to have an ASP script pull the phone and
user information out of Active Directory so the information on the users
can be used to populate a phone listing in Exchange 2000 public folder.

I've been looking and can't find the information that I KNOW is out there.
It wasn't that hard to do for Exchange 5.5 a few years ago, but I can't
find the code I had discovered and modified.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. :)

RE: Exchange Server 2000 / 2003 Phonebook ASP Help

2003-09-16 Thread Ken Cornetet
Care to learn Perl?

Net::LDAP makes it easy (well, as easy as LDAP gets...) to get the info
out of AD. You could write it as a comma delimited file, and use Outlook
to import it to the public folder.

Or you could use Win32::OLE to access MAPI functions to sync AD and the
public folder. Although I will say that MAPI is sorta ugly when used to
manage contact information.

While I don't have anything close to what you want, I do have some
samples for doing LDAP against AD and I've done a wee bit of MAPI stuff
too. Let me know if you want it.

ESEUTIL /R WON'T RUN!! HELP!!

2003-09-10 Thread Timothy J. Trace
My Exchange 2k post-SP3 server seems to run OK, but the information store
cannot be backed up. It fails, repeatedly, with corrupt file errors.
Multiple reboots, including chkdsk /f, don't help.

A mailbox-level backup (courtesy of BackupExec v9) seems to work fine.
I'm fairly confident that all of the user's items are protected by the
mailbox-level backup.

HOWEVER - as you probably guessed, the inability to complete a store
backup means that the .LOG files are piling up. In fact, there are
something on the order of 3900+ .LOG files, each exactly 5.12MB, in the
MDBDATA folder!!

So, I ran ESEUTIL /R as part of the trouble-shooting process. After
160-odd minutes, ESEUTIL exited with the following message:

Operation terminated with error -614 (JET_errCheckpointDepthTooDeep, too
many outstanding generations between checkpoint and current generation)
after 9678.31 seconds.

Searching Google Web and Google Groups for the phrase too many
outstanding generations gets no results. Since a Google Web search
includes the Microsoft KnowledgeBase, I think I've got a very rare problem
on my hands.

What do I do now?

There are only 50-odd users on this server. Do I have the option of
backing up to .PST, then creating a new information store? What do I do
to delete the old store, so that it doesn't interfere with the new store?

TIA - Tim ==

RE: ESEUTIL /R WON'T RUN!! HELP!!

2003-09-10 Thread Jeff Beckham
Your checkpoint file is way behind in marking the logs that have been
played into the store. This typically happens when a backup doesn't let
go of the .chk file. Best option is to delete the .chk file and fix the
backup issue.
If you run an eseutil /mk exx.chk, you will see the logfile that it
thinks was the last one to be played in vs the current logfile
generation. They are probably at least 1000 behind (that's when this
error occurs). The only issue with deleting the .chk file is that it
will force your system to replay through all logs since it doesn't know
where to start since the .chk is gone.

Thanks again Ed for the prompt response. It seems the RUS was the solution. By Monday

Subject: Help. Exchange 2000 and New Child Domain

I didn't have any luck in the archives or MSKB and I know this is probably a
simple question so, flame away if you must; I'm short on time and resources
and I hope someone will look kindly on me and offer some help or advice.

My situation: In order to support a new subsidiary company, we have created
a new child domain under our single domain forest which also contains our
Exchange 2000 organization. Everything is running in Exchange 2000 SP3
except the domain controllers which are all running SP4.

My Problem: I can create users in the new domain in AD Users and Computers
including creating the mailbox and configuring the mailbox properties. But
when I attempt to log that user in to Exchange with Outlook, I get The name
could not be resolved. The name could not be matched to a name in the
address list. Also, when I look in the GAL I don't see this user (we're
using the same GAL for now) and I don't see a mailbox in ESM in our
information store.

Please if anyone can offer assistance, we would be extremely thankful.

Thanks...Ray

RE: Urgent Help - Email forwarding stop working

2003-08-14 Thread by
There are pros cons for these 2 methods.

Rule wizard - give user's flexibility to turn on the out of office
redirect their emails to elsewhere.

Alternate recipient - user has to contact ITS all the time usually
they like to do redirection too frequently.

use
the Alternate Recipient option. We do this here for a few teachers who

Dear all,

Basically a lot of staff are forwarding their email to another account
for
reading it out of hours or when travelling. Both the out of office
assistant
and the rules wizard are used for this purpose by different staff

For unknown reason for a months now, this email forwarding feature no
longer
works and no obvious errors found.

Exchange MailBox Server
= Exchange 5.5 Server with SP4 level runs on NT4 member server with OS
SP6a

Exchange Internet Mail Service server
= Exchange 5.5 Server with SP4 level BUT runs on Windows 2000 member
server
with OS SP3

Client version = MS Outlook XP

The only difference is we have upgraded the Exchange IMC Server OS from
NT4.0
to Windows 2000 last month.

Can someone give me some hints where the problems could be?

Thanks in advanced.

You don't have to reboot the server for those - just restart the Internet

Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2003 08:57:32 -0400

Hello All.

Some accounts are unable to logon via OWA. Just keeps coming back with the
logon window. It has to be a permissions problems somewhere, but where

I changed the permissions on the x:\program files\exchsrvr folder to Read
execute, List and Read for Authenticated users. I stopped/restarted IIS and
restarted all Exchange services.

Still having problems with some accounts.

Please, any ideaswhere else can I look.

Also, in AD Users and Computers I noticed that under the Account Tab for a
user, the User Logon Name box does not contain a username. Does this have
anything to do with it?

Is the IMC configured to not allow automatic forwards to the Internet now?

Subject: Urgent Help - Email forwarding stop working

 Dear all,

Basically a lot of staff are forwarding their email to
another account for reading it out of hours or when
travelling. Both the out of office assistant and the rules
wizard are used for this purpose by different staff

For unknown reason for a months now, this email forwarding
feature no longer works and no obvious errors found.

 Exchange MailBox Server
= Exchange 5.5 Server with SP4 level runs on NT4 member
 server with OS SP6a

 Exchange Internet Mail Service server
= Exchange 5.5 Server with SP4 level BUT runs on Windows 2000
 member server with OS SP3

Client version = MS Outlook XP

The only difference is we have upgraded the Exchange IMC
Server OS from NT4.0 to Windows 2000 last month.

Can someone give me some hints where the problems could be?

 Thanks in advanced.

 Regards,
