Hi,

(Exchange 5.5/ SP4)

my priv IS is suddenly growing very rapidly.
I checked the integrity of the priv.edb using ISINTEG and also used
ESEUTIL to do and offline defrag.
The offline Defrag recovered about 1GB (was 19 went down to 18). Now the
IS has grown again about +2GB since that defrag and that in only 8h.

When I checked the Mailbox sizes now and compared them to the mailbox
sizes before the defrag I found the difference to be 27MB only and not
+2GB.

Actually the total of my mailboxes is only 8.5GB wile my priv.ed is now
20.5GB!

I have mailbox limitations on most mailboxes and none are unusually high.

I also noticed that the Mailboxes resources Listing shows the Exchange
Admin account as the NT account on many mailboxes. When double clicking
the mailbox it shows the correct account in the details.

What is going on? Would appreciate any help.

regards

Osama S.

RE: Information Store growing rapidly!!!!

2002-01-07 Thread Kim Kruse

I just recently had this problem, so perhaps the following can help:
Turned out it was a former employee who had set auto-forwarding of their
@Home email account to their work mailbox.
When @Home made changes recently - both servers began a mail war of NDR's
back and forth.
When I upped my diagnostic logging on IMC for SMTP - I could see all the
traffic.
This former employees mailbox had been hidden, tho not deleted (mistake #2).
Using 20-20 hindsight - I remember seeing this users mailbox resource
reported as 0k with 47,000+ items.
By the time we investigated - there was actually 14gb of junk in there
(mistake #3 - no limits).
Needless to say - we learned a lot that week-end!
FYI - when defragging - it actually took 24hrs due to, I believe, the
retention of deleted items I have set to 1 day (even tho when I Cleaned this
mailbox I said to Delete immediately).
So my lessons learned:
Set limits
Look at your diagnostic logs
Be suspicious if a user has 0k and X number of items in mailbox
Delete unused mailboxes
Defrag a couple of times to cover Deleted Retention period.
Maybe something in there will help.
