No.  The original PCRE support is not broken.

If it is going to go away, then adding PCRE2 support becomes much more
important, but I've seen nobody saying that yet.

note because the pcre2 rewrite has changed the pcre-config function call from
pcre-config to pcre2-config, the PCRE_CONFIG=yes setting in the Makefile no
longer succeeds. Conclusion, broken functionality. I suggest we escalate from
wishlist to bug
