Hi There,

I've just upgraded to Mandrake 7.2 (secure option) only to find that
an important commercial application (Interactive Data Language -- IDL)
has stopped working in a strange and interesting way.
IDL version 5.3 ran fine under Mandrake 7.1 (and runs correctly
under RedHat 6.2 and 7.0), but now sets all integer data types
(BYTE, INTEGER, LONG) to zero:

IDL> help, 2D
<Expression> DOUBLE = 2.0000000
IDL> help, 2
<Expression> INTEGER = 0
IDL> x = findgen(100)
% Array dimensions must be greater than 0
(In other words, IDL now thinks that 100 = 0)
Floating point data types retain their values.

This sounds like a library version incompatibility, but I was
hoping somebody had more specific insights before I start messing
with glibc (version 2.1.3 installed; RedHat has 2.1.95, I believe).
IDL's technical folks recommend switching to RedHat 7 (the nerve!)
What do other folks think?

        Best regards,

                David Grier
