you can even run gnome in xstartup. comment out twm with a #, and exec
gnome-session on the next line. (or kde !)

Just tried that. It starts up some sort of plan Jane X console with one open
Xterm. If you try to start X from the term window it starts X on the host
machine, not on the X server machine. It was worth the try.
