Hi,
I have a question regarding the log status of users logged in in :0.0 in
machines that boot to init 5. I have a dual Celeron machine with Mandrake
7.1 set to boot directly to init 5 and the graphical log in in managed by
kdm and it works fine. However, when I issue a w command after logging in
I do not get any listing for a tty under :0.0. Under two other UNIX
systems, when I issue w after logging in using a GUI comparable to the one
generated by kdm I always get a user entry to either a tty in :0.0
(IRIX) or tty under - (Mac OS X). When I do the same in Linux, w reports
one user but lists no tty for that user (I use Konsole as my terminal
program and KDE). How can I get Linux (Mandrake) to report by w a user
logged in in init 5? I have exactly the same situation on another machine
running RedHat 5.2, KDE, and Konsole.

This problem started when I realized that other users of the system could
not use talk exchange messages with me, and yet they could use talk among
themselves.

TIA,
ZP
