You may never know, but you can try to keep things as secure as

keep you patches/packages up to date...check for security updates.

As an additional precaution, you might want to look into getting and using
chkrootkit. It searches your system for evidence that you've already been
hacked, and seems to check for a fairly comprehensive list of trojans, worms,
etc.
If you're serious about security, you should also look into

the rpms available here (nmap is nmap but there are some different gui's
