Try using these options for pppd:
nodeflate
noaccomp
noccp
nopcomp
novj
novjccomp

I had a problem similar (no pppd crash, pppd just stalled) to yours that was solved by 
using them.  Lots of info on the web about pppd having problems with vj compression.  
Search for "ppp stall" or "pppd stall".
