---By analogy, imo, one might compare the Buddhist objection to the performance of yagyas to the gods to Luther's objection to indulgences. Yagyas counteract bad karma, indulgences supposedly counteract sins and pave the way for the Soul's quick passage through Purgatory on the way to Heaven.
