On Transference and Transformation, by Polly Young-Eisendrath

"A collective experience that the teacher's authority is sacrosanct--never to
be questioned on even practical issues, much less spiritual ones--will
exagerate and reinforce negative iconic-projective transferences in students.
Often the hateful and agressive feelings about the teacher's imagined
weaknesses will be split off and felt toward those who do not practice or have
different beliefs such as a spouse or work associate. An overly zealous
attitude in a student should be a warning that negative strivings, connected to
the idealization of a teacher, are unconsciously overwhelming and so have to be
kept under strict control."
