[FairfieldLife] How to pronounce 'Björk'?
I gather the spelling 'byirk' (b-yirk) would result to the most accurate pronunciation in the case of native speakers of English!
Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: Raja Kingsley reports on Nepal
Actually, I read a small bit -- the intro -- and I can see/speculate how some strata in some cultures would find the language and presentation appealing. After enough time spent involved in spiritual groups where the founder and top person lives in the US, I noticed how the amount of ceremony, the candles, the photographs of deities and gurus, the prostration, the pujas, the flowery words, and so on, present within a group is usually inversely proportional to the development of that group's country. Ceremony abounds amongst poorer people, such as in India, amongst African tribes, and amongst Native Americans. All these things look cultish to the outsider. The opposite is true in the US - I have been associated with groups in the US where there is not an iota of it whatsoever. The exception in the US is when it's important to the group to keep the old country's traditions alive, very common with Indian traditions, because the path to enlightenment is seen as coming through the whole kit-and-kaboodle of doing not just the techniques but the bowing and the incense and the candles and whatever. Even then, it's usually a watered-down version. and I can see/speculate how some strata in some cultures would find the language and presentation appealing. Could well be. I just want to make clear that my observation and opinion of the difference between developed and less developed cultures in this regard is in no way meant to disparage the developed cultures who may find the language and presentation more appealing that readers in the US might. Under the influence of maya, Brahman appears as Ishvara, the personal God, who exists on the celestial level of life, in the subtlest field of creation. In a similar manner, under the influence of avidya, atman appears as jiva, or individual soul. - MMY

CNBC : The Dow Jones Industrial Average will lose about half of its value over the next couple of years as it follows a Nikkei-like pattern of several sharp rallies in an overall decline, according to Charles Nenner, founder and president of Charles Nenner research. Stocks are currently in a bear-market rally, and looking at charts and past trends, unemployment and leading indicators suggest the Dow will drop to 5,000 in the next two to two-and-a-half years, Nenner told CNBC in an e-mail. Deflation will arrive, along with a sharp double-dip recession, pushing the Dow lower, although, like the Japanese market, stocks will see several jumps of 30 percent to 40 percent, he said. Things look really bad for the next 10 years, Nenner said.

To join the conversation about this article, go to baycitizen.org http://www.baycitizen.org/ . Raj Patel has met his maker, so to speak. Mr. Patel, a San Francisco author and economist, woke up one day earlier this year to discover that he had unwillingly been declared the messiah by followers of the New Age group Share International http://share-international.org , founded by Benjamin Creme, a London mystic. It was a revelation that made Mr. Patel the focus of unwanted attention by thousands of worshipers and thrust him into a surreal international news media frenzy. Last week Mr. Creme visited the Bay Area, and the two men met for the first time, over cookies in a private home in Berkeley, a possible finale in the timely tale of a mortal mistaken for a god. After the meeting, both men have decided to call the events of the past several months a case of mistaken identity. They seemed impressed with each other, with Mr. Creme saying he found Mr. Patel quite intelligent and charming. Mr. Patel had a different impression of Mr. Creme: Bonkers. In January, devotees of Mr. Creme's decades-old prophesies concluded based on a series of clues and unverified information on the Internet that Mr. Patel was the earthly manifestation of Maitreya, The World Teacher. Mr. Creme, who said he received telepathic messages from the immortal Maitreya to share with followers, did not endorse the claim. But he did not forcefully deny it either. The story first appeared in this column, then London tabloids devoured the tale mercilessly, and Stephen Colbert http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/c/stephen_co\ lbert/index.html?inline=nyt-per , the comedian, devoted an entire segment of his Colbert Report http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/267526/march-15-\ 2010/i-can-t-believe-it-s-not-buddha---raj-patel on Comedy Central to ridiculing the deification. Although Mr. Creme has finally released Mr. Patel from his divine burden, it doesn't mean that he has given up on the idea of a messiah for these troubling times. In fact, his meeting with Mr. Patel was just part of an extended visit to the Bay Area to recruit new believers. A crowd of more than 600 gathered at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts on a recent Sunday afternoon to hear Mr. Creme. Looking his 87 years, he was gently assisted to center stage and then sat stoically as an audio recording played his voice, in a slow Boris Karloff cadence, purportedly channeling the words of Maitreya. My plan is to show you that the way out of your problems is to listen again to the true voice of god within your hearts, to share, he said. When the recording ended, Mr. Creme spoke about the various crises in the world, including the growing imbalance between rich and poor that he ascribed to an outmoded way of living a message that seemed to resonate with the mostly white crowd, some of whom had arrived in Mercedeses and BMWs. Mr. Creme went on to explain that invisible brothers from other inhabited planets in our solar system had been on Earth to help mankind escape its problems and usher in a new age. J. Gordon Melton, a religious scholar who has studied Share International and Mr. Creme since the 1970s, described the group as small and harmless. The group's messianic message that a compassionate savior will come and teach the world better ways in hard economic times and war has an appeal, Mr. Melton said. But, he added, non-Christian messiahs tend to face fierce opposition in the United States. That became clear at Mr. Creme's appearance when a man in the audience disrupted the event by pointing and shouting, Don't believe these lies! This man is the devil! Mr. Creme said later that he had faced such acrimony in the past, although it was rare. He said he had brought
[FairfieldLife] The Daddy State
The Daddy StateBy Raj http://rajpatel.org/author/raj/ on 08/19/2010 in Uncategorized http://rajpatel.org/category/uncategorized/ , featured http://rajpatel.org/category/featured/ When those who rant against The Nanny State http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanny_state are pressed about what they'd like to see instead, they often point to philanthropy as their preferred model of social progress and uplift. Proven, effective, and most of all voluntary, they'd offer. The billionaire Giving Pledge http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/billionaires-accept-c\ haritable-challenge/article1661467/ , in which ultra-wealthy individuals promise to give more than half their loot to `good causes' after they die, hit the headlines earlier this month to the usual cooing from those fulminating against progressive taxation. See? The rich can redistribute their wealth without the state doing it for them. The rich aren't just rich they're generous too! Which is why it was so nice to see The Economist, http://www.economist.com/node/16690659 of all places, write about a recent UC Berkeley study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology http://psycnet.apa.org/index.cfm?fa=buy.optionToBuyid=2010-14101-001 on how being rich makes you systematically less generous. Actually, the authors of the study note that lower class individuals proved to be more generous, charitable, trusting, and helpful compared with their upper class counterparts. Mediator and moderator data showed that lower class individuals acted in a more prosocial fashion because of a greater commitment to egalitarian values and feelings of compassion. On the bright side, the study showed it was possible to foster traits of generosity and compassion among the rich through things like imaginative writing exercises. Perhaps when Bill Gates called his friends asking them to change their last wills and testaments, he opened with imagine you're broke and hungry. Of course, noblesse oblige is hardly a solution to social problems much less noblesse à volonté as The Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/aug/07/bill-gates-warren-b\ uffet-philanthropy and Peter Wilby http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2010/aug/05/philanth\ ropy-does-not-pay-taxes have noted. But what, exactly, should you call it when billionaires get to set the terms on which they acquire wealth and give it away, of what counts as a good cause and what an unworthy one. Don't call it the Nanny State, because this isn't about governments hectoring anyone to do the right thing. It's about a few men deciding what's good not just for the country, but the world. Call it patriarchy. Call it the Daddy State. [FairfieldLife] Re: Raja Kingsley reports on Nepal
Peter, Of course this sounds fopish. Indians were taught to speak this way by their British overlords in British established schools in India. It is late Victorian and Edwardian in basic style. Some of the Tibetans teachers who spoke good English also needed to adjust their speech into everyday conversational. However this was not true of the ones who trained in English universities such as Sri Aurobindo Ghose (Kings college) in the Victorian I have seen some of the Indian teachers of SSRS start out this way, especially if new, but they get corrected by other Indians quickly, at least here in the US. It helps if they are established in a business environment because they adapt quickly when they realize how awkward it sounds. I believe the more salient point is the utter disconnect about the real Nepal and the absurd TMO version of their own importance to the world. After Maharishi visited Nepal, the same political structures continued and then it blew up - as was predictable. The Maoists seized control over most of the countryside in Nepal. Over a decade of conflict, over 13,000 people were killed in a tiny country. It was certainly heaven on earth for the rakshashas. Even though the Maoists have a ceasefire truce and an agreement to join the government, progress is slow and there is still armed conflict at local levels. Just yesterday, I talked with a Tibetan translator who lives in Nepal. Last week the Maoists came looking for him at him at the Bon Monastery where he has his base. They had a list of all his life information, education, etc. and they were questioning everyone about his whereabouts. He now has to seek asylum because it is too dangerous to go back. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Peter drpetersutp...@... wrote: The language is ridiculous. Weissman August 1, 2010 Fifty years ago, the former Belgian Congo received its independence under the democratically elected government of former prime minister Patrice Lumumba. Less than seven months later, Lumumba and two colleagues were, in the contemporary idiom, rendered to their Belgian-backed secessionist enemies, who tortured them before putting them before a firing squad. The Congo would not hold another democratic election for 46 years. In 2002, following an extensive parliamentary inquiry, the Belgian government assumed a portion of responsibility for Lumumba's murder. But controversy has continued to swirl over allegations of U.S. government responsibility, as the reception for Raoul Peck's acclaimed film, Lumumba, demonstrated. After all, the U.S. had at least as much, if not more, influence in the Congolese capital as Belgium. It was the major financier and political supporter of the U.N. peacekeeping force that controlled most of the country. According to still classified documents that I first revealed eight years ago, members of the Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) Project Wizard covert action program dominated the post-Lumumba Congolese regime. However, a 1975 U.S. Senate investigation of alleged CIA assassinations concluded that while the CIA had earlier plotted to murder Lumumba, he was eventually killed by Congolese rivals. It does not appear from the evidence that the United States was in any way involved in the killing. It is now clear that conclusion was wrong. A new analysis of the declassified files of the Senate Church Committee (chaired by Democratic Senator Frank Church), CIA and State Department, along with memoirs and interviews of U.S. and Belgian covert operators, establishes that CIA Station Chief Larry Devlin was consulted by his Congolese government cooperators about the transfer of Lumumba to sworn enemies, had no objection to it and withheld knowledge from Washington of the impending move, forestalling the strong possibility that the State Department would have intervened to try to save Lumumba. I detail this evidence in a new article in the academic journal, Intelligence and National Security, vol. 25, no. 2 (The full article is available from the publisher.) Here, briefly, are the most important new findings: - Former U.S. officials who knew Lumumba now acknowledge that the administration of former president Dwight D. Eisenhower mistakenly cast him as a dangerous vehicle of Soviet influence. - Covert CIA actions against the Lumumba government, often dovetailing with Belgian ones, culminated in Colonel Joseph Mobutu's military coup, which was arranged and supported and indeed managed by the CIA alone, according to Devlin's private interview with the Church Committee staff. - The CIA station and U.S. embassy provided their inexperienced and politically weak Congolese protégés with a steady stream of political and military recommendations. The advice arrived both before Congolese government decisions and shortly afterwards when foreign advisers were invited in to offer feedback. Devlin's counsel was largely heeded on critical matters, especially when it came to Lumumba. Thus Mobutu and former president Joseph Kasavubu were persuaded to resist political pressures to reconcile with Lumumba, and Mobutu reluctantly acceded to Devlin's request to arrest him. After both Devlin and the American ambassador intervened, the government dropped its plan to attack U.N. troops guarding Lumumba. And after Lumumba was publicly brutalized by Mobutu's troops, the U.S. embassy under pressure from the State Department, which was concerned about African governments' threats to pull out of the U.N. force pushed Kasavubu into promising Lumumba humane treatment and a fair trial. - In this context of U.S. adviser-Congolese leader interactions, Devlin's decision not to intervene after he was informed by a government leader of a plan to send Lumumba to his sworn enemy signaled that he had no objection to the government's course. It was also seen that way by Devlin's Belgian counterpart, Colonel Louis Marliere, who later wrote, There was a `consensus' and no adviser, whether he be Belgian or American, thought to dissuade them. Considering Congolese leaders' previous responsiveness to CIA and U.S. embassy views, Devlin's permissive attitude was undoubtedly a major factor in the government final action. (Its last-minute switch of sending Lumumba to murderous secessionists in Katanga instead of murderous secessionists in South Kasai does not change the crucial fact that

Yep, you nailed it. Those humans were the rakshashas. People here in the US have lost their history. We used to know this stuff but as a nation we've been dumbed down. We can thank the Neo-Marxist academics, teachers and social workers of our generation for this ant-heap mentality. Conflict like this happened here in `Merica in the un-Civilwar. However we mostly are ignorant oft he deadly border wars between of Kansas and Missouri that presaged and lead into the full Civil War. Anyone who saw Ang Lee's movie, Ride with the Devil, got a glimpse of what it was like. Plain clothed Union Army officers from Ft.Leavenworth rode with Kansas militias as they assaulted the homes of suspected Southern sympathizers. They broke down the doors, segregated the women and children and then blew out the brains of the father in front of the wife and children. They then burned down the house with its furnishing. This is what led to the infamous ride of Quantrill's raiders to Lawrence, Kansas where they executed many people and burned down 25% of the town. It wasn't like that stupid oldJohn Wayne movie. Just before he film was shot, the town of Patensburg, Missouri was flooded out and had to be totally evacuated. Ang Lee made a deal we will give you $1 million to move up the bluff. All you need to do is let us rebuild the façade of 1863 Lawrence, Ks so we can film the burning of the town and the massacre of the men. So they did. They then hired local haulers and cleaned up the site. What startled Ang Lee when he came on the shooting site was the hatred still evident in the border area. He was quite amazed that Quantrill was a hero in Missouri but a demon in Kansas and people still had strong animosity on both sides. All of that subsisted here in the good old US even after 120+years of history. If it is like that here in the US imagine what it is like in Nepal. I don't think one needs to bring imaginary beings into the discussion. It was a fuckin' mess. And it was the SAME fuckin' mess whether it was created by dastardly rakshasas from the eighth dimension or by puny-ass humans just like ourselves. Shit happened. One doth not necessarily have to attribute Shit Happening to actual rakshasas when a more rational explanation can be found in human beings just acting out their dark sides.

[FairfieldLife] Epilogue: Prairie Peace Park is facing its end
Nature supports and nature taketh away... http://journalstar.com/special-section/epilogue/article_2d4b8d0e-aecf-11df-8bd3-001cc4c03286.html The Prairie Peace Park opened in 1994. Interstate 80 travelers often dropped in to view the unique, peace-oriented artwork and exhibits. Annual visitation averaged about 600. Faced with financial problems, the Prairie Peace Park Board sold the park in 2005 to a transcendental meditation group based in Fairfield, Iowa. PLEASANT DALE -- The Prairie Peace Park has fallen on hard times. Old tires and shattered glass and an empty Jim Beam bottle litter the entrance. Weeds grow in the cracks of the parking lot, which is scattered with asphalt shingles and debris from an abandoned house nearby. There are no welcome banners to greet visitors -- only a big for sale sign and a colorful mural on the side of the house, featuring flowers, sun, people, music symbols and a globe supported by hands. It wasn't always this way. The Prairie Peace Park once was a place where the seeds of peace were sown by a group of visionaries who wanted a venue where people could meditate about ways to change a violent world. The park opened June 11, 1994. More than 1,500 people attended, including actor Ed Asner, children's singer Raffi and the late U.S. Sen. J.J. Exon. Sixteen years later, the park is about to be sold, its mission of fostering world peace lost in 27 acres of weeds and trees and neglected sculptures and exhibits. Marc Snow with NAI FMA Realty in Lincoln has been working with a buyer interested in the land and has a contract under review. Don Tilley, president of the Prairie Peace Park Board, was not surprised by the news. We were expecting it to happen, he said. Tilley, one of the park's founders, had high hopes its peace mission would live on after the board sold it in 2005 to Global Country World Peace, based in Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa. The group, affiliated with Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, planned to build a 12,000-square-foot peace palace on site to teach transcendental meditation and host public lectures. We always had some hope, Tilley said. When they tried to sell the property, we kind of guessed it (the peace palace) wasn't going to happen. (...)

Was there ever a time when the TMO actually was adult about the whole process, or, as I am guessing, did they just let you twist in the wind and never really confront you while endlessly delaying badge approval etc.? If they did confront you officially, was there a paper trail of the transactions? No paper trail that I'm aware of. They didn't boot me out for FFL, but for Amma involvement, five days after 9/11, when there was a big drive on to get everyone to the domes. I was very regular. I had started FFL a few days before 9/11, but it was small and they weren't aware of it.

Nab-your-lost, Maharishi said in 1971 at Humbolt, Go to Vietnam and fight if called, it is your duty. This was part of that old Indian view - that all the karma falls to the King who orders the war. However few of us took his views seriously because we had already been educated about the Nuremberg trials. Individual responsibility cannot be shirked with I was ordered and not even by I would have been shot for refusing to follow orders. We just chalked up his view to his Indian cultural bias and to the fact that he was a Kshatriya. Apparently, you have never read The Black Book of Communism. [FairfieldLife] Re: physicist Lawrence Krauss on Chopra and TM
Very well put.I did not mean to put Krauss down, no doubt he is a lot smarter than I am,I meant that we are ALL clueless because IMHO existence ultimately isinnately unfathomable. Its just that some people are clearer about their being clueless than others are :) Possibly...but the persons making the claims are challenged to come up with some actual evidence; at least some reasonable hypothesis that makes sense and doesn't rely on Mahareeshee-speak. There could be some indirect connection between the mind and QM reality; but this is speculative (as in the case with the Penrose-Hammerhoff ideas). A more fruitful area of inquiry could involve parallels to holography (Cf. The Holographic Universe in Wiki). At least, holograms are relative, even the universe as a whole. Just my opinion...the relationship between the two aspects of Brahman could be a genuine Paradox; not just mentally paradoxical but innately unfathomable. If there are some actual levitators, they are relying on Shakti, which is relative. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, shanti2218411 kc21d@ wrote: Krauss makes a good point re Chopra et al, however, ultimately he is just as clueless as they are, something I'm not sure he understands.

I took 35 years to have my falling out with MMY and the TMO. I thought all the vastu, jyotish, yagyas and all the other was just a moneymaking scheme. So many fowl ups. Like, for example, the THMD developing a cult of Mother Divine and standing back after each motion, after each word, to witness their actions. I could go on and on about the utter foolishness. Maharishi constantly betting on a losing horse Hail President Czinao. The Philippines campaign. I am not sold on SSRS. [FairfieldLife] Re: physicist Lawrence Krauss on Chopra and TM
Let's see to get to the level of Hagelin, I would say it would take how many years of college and post graduate work? Deepak recycles the same stuff over and over again, I would like to see him produce equations on a black board. That won't happen, Deepak is not stupid but he is no physicist, but that won't stop him for being a self proclaimed polymath. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Rick Archer r...@... wrote: From: FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com [mailto:fairfieldl...@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of sgrayatlarge Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2010 9:32 PM To: FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com Subject: [FairfieldLife] Re: physicist Lawrence Krauss on Chopra and TM I Imagine the thin skinned Dr. Chopra will no doubt challenge Prof. Krauss as a low consciousness no nothing, however Dr. Chopra please consider his CV before you launch an embassasing attack: By implication, Prof. Krauss is criticizing Hagelin as much as he is Deepak. Deepak learned his physics in the TM movement. Prof. Lawrence M. Krauss is an internationally known theoretical physicist with wide research interests, including the interface between elementary particle physics and cosmology, where his studies include the early universe, the nature of dark matter, general relativity and neutrino astrophysics. He has investigated questions ranging from the nature of exploding stars to issues of the origin of all mass in the universe. He was born in New York City and moved shortly thereafter to Toronto, Canada, where he grew up. He received undergraduate degrees in both Mathematics and Physics at Carleton University. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1982), then joined the Harvard Society of Fellows (1982-85). He joined the faculty of the departments of Physics and Astronomy at Yale University as assistant professor in 1985, and associate professor in 1988. In 1993 he was named the Ambrose Swasey Professor of Physics, Professor of Astronomy, and Chairman of the department of Physics at Case Western Reserve University. He served in the latter position for 12 years, until 2005. During this period he built up the department, which was ranked among the top 20 Physics Graduate Research Programs in the country in a 2005 national ranking. Among the major new initiatives he spearheaded are included the creation of one of the top particle astrophysics experimental and theoretical programs in the US, and the creation of a groundbreaking Masters Program in Physics Entrepreneurship. In 2002, he was named Director of the Center for Education and Research in Cosmology and Astrophysics at Case. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com mailto:FairfieldLife%40yahoogroups.com , yifuxero yifuxero@ wrote: p. 36, Scientific American, Sept, 2010 DEEPAK CHOPRA: I have read numerous pieces by him on why quantum mechanics provides rationales for everything from the existence of God to the possibility of changing the past. THE SECRET: This best-selling book, which spawned a self-help industry, seems to be built on part on the claim that quantum physics implies a law of attraction that suggests good thoughts will make good things happen. It doesn't. TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION: TMers argue that they can fly by achieving a lower quantum-mechanical ground state and that the more people who practice TM, the less violent the world will become. This last idea at least is in accord with quantum mechanics, to the extent that if everyone on the planet did nothing but meditate there wouldn't be time for violence (or acts of kindness, either).
