Naturally, effortlessly, spontaneously we begin to live an integrated life . . . wide awake to both our inner and outer experiences. At the same time, we don’t lose our self in our experiences of life. Our experiences don’t get imprinted on our own nature. TM is a good way of stilling. There are many ways of stilling. Let's celebrate them all, celebrate everyone who is stilling, opening, purifying, reflecting pure awareness back to itself.

Hi soundofsilence, my knee became wonky last winter. I discovered something called PowerStrips, a patch containing ginseng, phytoplankton, silver and something mysterious called germanium. Germanium is a chemical element with symbol Ge and atomic number 32. It is a lustrous, hard, grayish-white metalloid in the carbon group, chemically similar to its group neighbors tin and silicon. Purified germanium is a semiconductor, with an appearance most similar to elemental silicon. Germanium metal (isolated germanium) is used as a semiconductor in transistors and various other electronic devices. Presently, germanium's major end uses are in fibre-optic systems, infrared optics and in solar cell applications. Germanium compounds are also used for polymerization catalysts and have most recently found use in the production of nanowires. [FairfieldLife] What's learned from books stays in books
OK, so there may have been a moment since first hearing this thought that I may have had some degree of understanding of what it meant. But at this moment in time I don't understand it. Let's say a 'book' on the surface is 'paper' and 'ink'. Then we move into 'words', 'sentences' and 'paragraphs'. Then 'thoughts' and 'feelings' and 'meaning' of a 'consciousness'. Then 'thoughts' and 'feelings' and 'meaning' settling with another 'awareness'. So what is 'staying' in books if I've 'learned' something from a book? Would it be the same 'staying' that I 'experienced' from a painting? What's experienced from a painting stays on the canvas? Or what's heard from a record stays on the record? I'm probably, likely pretty dumb asking this. It's probably obvious and I'll get it as soon as someone explains. Say I see a scribbling in a book by Julia Child. I read how to make an (om)elette. Is this the same as 'learning' how to make an omelette? Maybe I haven't 'learned' until I actually follow the recipe and make an omelette. Am I beginning to answer my own question? 'Learning' means 'experimenting'? Doing, not just reading? But by that definition 'What's learned from books stays in books' would suggest that I've done more than read from the book. I've had an 'experience' in one form another taking place in the field of my awareness. Well not really 'my' awareness, but within the boundary that I've set that I'm calling my field of dreams. Kind of like a set director on a film production. So if you're as lost as I am now, the question is, what the heck does 'What's learned from books stays in books' mean?

[FairfieldLife] Re: What's learned from books stays in books
I've read it as: Knowledge in the books stays in the books. Superficially, it means that a light reading of any material is not easily remembered, whereas careful study involves a great many more neural iterations that, my theory, then aids memory being hard-wired and more easily recalled. We refer to ourselves as consciousness researchers. That means that we allow our attentions to naturally iterate a state of lessening excitation -- that is: prong the nervous system to grow ersatz silence. This culturing of a nervous system may help a personality to attain a host of skills and a massive database, but here's the bottom line: neural processes are neural processes -- not quiescence. Freedom is the realization that sentience is beyond conditionals and identities. I read Advaita books every day, but it only succors my intellect, not my heart's longing for peace. Peace is not something about which anything can be said -- in a book or a aphorism. So, there's the core -- peace may be conceptually delineated by a scholar, a priest, a yogi, but the intellect cannot turn itself off and, pitifully, yet another subtlety about silence is NOT SILENCE REALIZED AS AN ALL TIME REALITY. To review: if it's phenomenal, illusory, conceptual, emotional, astral -- it's just A DISTRACTION, and anything you think is in the book is equal to your thinking a mirage's watering hole is wet. THERE IS NO POSSIBILITY THAT KNOWLEDGE IS ACTUAL -- the unbounded potentiality can be merely symbolized well enough to gather identity and weld you to the wheel of karma. How'z ya spinnin'?

How'z ya spinnin'? Whew, how would you explain this to a 4th grader? Are you saying . . . Awareness is the condition for our experience of every 'thing'. Awareness can't be explained by any 'thing' at all. Especially by reading a book. But if I read that in a book it would get me thinking. And who knows, I might even ask who's thinkin' the thought? And one fine day that thought/question might gain wings when I read a headline that says, You're The Thinker, You My Friend Are the Knower Of Your Experience And then I'd probably say out loud, even shouting from a rooftop, Why didn't I think of that! Thinkin' more thinking, getting lost in thinking. So knowledge in a book stays in the book. But isn't 'knowledge' something that suggests a 'knower' suggests 'awareness'? And isn't the 'book' in the field of 'awareness'? Just askin' as I'm spinning round. Not sure what I'm asking as I'm heading out to a local Greek Ristorante. Maybe it'll become clearer with a little olive oil and feta in my belly. Didn't that work for Zorba?

So, you're thinking that we are bound to a wheel based on karma and illusion. If we are free, there would be no need for a yoga; if bound, by what means can we free ourselves?

At some point you've got to ask yourself, why is it that the Israelis are doing so well and the Arab Palestinians in West Bank and Gaza Strip are doing so poorly? Why don't the other Arab countries help the Arabs in Gaza? The people in Gaza could probably make better use of some money and economic improvement instead of rockets. There are what, thirteen Arab countries in the Middle East, some of them rich from oil? Go figure. What we know: Egypt did not offer them citizenship and neither did Jordan offer citizenship to the Arabs of the West Bank. Egypt maintains a strict blockade on Gaza in order to isolate Hamas from Islamist insurgents in the Sinai. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/182738#.U8MugrHEaM1 Israel does allow freedom of religion, sexual orientation etc whereas many Muslim countries if not most, do not! ah, soundofstillness, the land of paradox, a very wonderful place to be... neti, neti, not this, not this becomes and this too, and this too (-: Share Long, That's beautiful. Didn't Ramana Maharishi say the asking Who Am I' is a more direct way of realization than neti, neti? Back when I was a kid I thought Who Am I was something that needed figuring out. Now, for me, it's just a 'reminder' just like keep breathing kid.
Re: [FairfieldLife] What's learned from books stays in books
It means that no teaching about a supposed higher or alternate state of consciousness that you read about in books has anything to do with that state of consciousness. So reading about it or hearing about it accomplishes nothing. Some things don't work as the result of recipes.
Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: Where From Here?
I see this lull as a good thing. As you suggest, the fact that the forum no longer contains the major source of the acrimony means that there is less of it. What Ann may be missing is the fact that she has fewer negative threads to pile on to. Why I see this as a good thing is that those who have coasted for years on this forum saying nothing original and nothing interesting themselves, just piling on to the acrimonious threads, now have to think of something interesting to say, if they want to say anything at all. I suspect many of them will be unable to. I haven't been posting the last few days because I've been moving. My new house is currently decorated in the style referred to as Early Cardboard Box, so I would suspect that unpacking them will keep me busy for a few days. :-) From: steve.sun...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife] FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com To: FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, July 21, 2014 8:07 PM Subject: [FairfieldLife] Re: Where From Here? I've seen lulls Ann, but this one seems different. I was on vacation a couple weeks ago. Was it discussed - Judy's absence? Do we know why she no longer posts. Let's face it, for bettner or worse, she was a main driver of the dialogue. I would put much of went on, 80%, acrimony by content, and maybe 60% by volume. I don't know what can really drive the dialogue going forward.
