No, take away the guns from the criminals. Then, you won't have to take anyone
else's guns nor will they have to use them to defend themselves. Taking away
law abiding citizen's guns only makes them vulnerable targets. Of course, you
can't expect the criminally minded to surrender their guns...ever.

 Salyavin,

Believing is the initial cognition of a Divine Being after experiencing all of
the information from the world through the five senses. Knowing a Divine Being
is the stage of believing in which the mind is convinced of Its existence
through the information from the senses. Enlightenment occurs when the mind
and It are one and coexist in the body as it lives in the world.

Convinced is a worrying word for me in this instance, labeling experiences as
some sort of "other" is making unwarranted assumptions. I could call it
all-round superniceness and it would be the same thing, it's us who call it
divine and thus dump our needy baggage all over it.

An artificial machine cannot experience the Divine as the human body can.
Therefore, it cannot believe nor experience enlightenment.

How do you know? If we build a machine that mimics ourselves perfectly, who
are we to say that it can't have joyous experiences.

No one alive can build that machine. Machines are not living cells and they
are not sentient beings and never will be no matter how many "Terminator"
movies you watch.

 Ann,

Please, read my reply to Salyavin reply regarding the difference between
believing and knowing. IMO, the human brain with its body is capable of
knowing the Divine Being. The obstacle to this knowledge is the human ego,
which often thinks that it is the god and nothing else is above it. Hence, we
have the story of disobedience on the part of Adam and Eve in the Garden of
Eden.

However, when enlightenment occurs in a human being, the human mind and It are
one residing in the human body. As such, the fortunate human being can truly
live heaven here on earth. But, as we can see, humans are still functioning at
the gross level of the ego which is the cause of wars, violence, greed and
poverty. Suffice is it to say that it's not far above animal existence.

I often experience it to be far below animal experience and I mean this very
sincerely.

First, I would have to define what it is to "know" God. Have I realized
he/she/it exists? Have I become enlightened? Have I seen he/she/it? Do I live
the "reality" of God every moment? Did I realize him/her/it for a while and
later lost that? How do I define "artificial intelligence" beyond the circuits
and electronics of it? I don't, I can't understand what another's experience
is, let alone a circuit board's.

Well you must be living in the "good times" then. But you probably

nothing to do with entitlements. You complain about foreigners coming
in and they want to replace people companies think that are too

You have to know something about economics to evaluate this properly

Last week one of the local talk hosts had a local county assessor on

the street mowed the yard, a girl walked her dog down the street and quite
a few cars stopped at the stop sign near the front of my house.

After about an hour, I checked on the gun. It was still sitting there,
right where I had left it. It hadn't moved itself outside. It certainly
hadn't killed anyone, even with the numerous opportunities it had presented
 to do so.

In fact, it hadn't even loaded itself. Well you can imagine my surprise,
with all the hype by the Left and the Media about how dangerous guns are
and how they kill people. Either the media is wrong or I have in my
possession, the laziest gun in the world.

The United States is 3rd in Murders throughout the World. But if you take
out just 4 cities: Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC and New Orleans, the
United States is 4th from the bottom, in the entire world, for Murders.

These 4 Cities also have the toughest Gun Control Laws in the U.S. ALL 4
of these cities are controlled by Democrats. It would be absurd to draw
any conclusions from this data - right?

Well, I'm off to check on my spoons. I hear they're making people fat.

Rick, thanks for the forum. It is one of the gifts of the internet that made
the internet personally useful in ways I never imagined possible. It's nice to
connect with folks about TM and a million other subjects without having to
necessarily be politically correct at local center. We have been able to
express our concerns without that passive agressive behavior so many governors
and teachers engage in. I firmly believe that being critical in a constructive
manner is "not going negative".

All the best.

I think you misunderstood me. I sure as hell don't think the economy is humming
along just fine. I was saying that improving the economy isn't going to make
people feel safe without guns. I think there is an element  in society that is
always going to cause trouble, on a criminal level, and that element is getting
bigger and bolder. Disarming the general population will only embolden them
more. You know the old saying, when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have
guns.

Well you must be living in the "good times" then.  But you probably have
neighbors who would disagree with your assessment and it has nothing to do with
entitlements.  You complain about foreigners coming in and they want to replace
people companies think that are too expensive with cheaper foreign workers.
They don't even give US workers a chance to negotiate.

You have to know something about economics to evaluate this properly and I
even read and listen to conservatives who know the economy is failing.  And
they are more in a panic about it than "pseudo liberals" (liberals in name
only) who believe the good times are here.  Ah!  You must be a closet liberal,
Mike!

Last week one of the local talk hosts had a local county assessor on who
declared the recession over so they would be taking off the adjustments made
over the last few years so people wouldn't lose their homes.  I don't know what
he was smoking but the recession is far from over and a bigger one on the
horizon.

character issues. We, baby boomers and beyond, are spoiled generations that
have an entitlement personality. We are *owed* something we haven't deserved or

FWIW, we have an SF Bay Area radio talk host who is a gun owner and a
liberal.  She stands by carrying a gun and how it may have saved her life once.
So she support the second amendment as do I though I don't own a gun but am
also very liberal.

There are some issue neither right nor left.  It just appears that some people
believe that banning guns is a solution but it isn't.  The problem is probably
the economy spiraling out of country and the economic disparity it creates.  It
is making many people on the planet crazy.  Solve that instead.

Believing is the initial cognition of a Divine Being after experiencing all of
the information from the world through the five senses. Knowing a Divine Being

through the information from the senses.

Most humans don't even know what enlightenment is. Just look at FFL.
Now for bots artificial enlightenment would be no electronic excitation
just silence. If they like it then they'll just sit there doing
nothing. Problem with robots taking over solved.

Well you must be living in the "good times" then. But you probably have
neighbors who would disagree with your assessment and it has nothing to
do with entitlements. You complain about foreigners coming in and they
want to replace people companies think that are too expensive with
cheaper foreign workers. They don't even give US workers a chance to
negotiate.

You have to know something about economics to evaluate this properly and
I even read and listen to conservatives who know the economy is
failing. And they are more in a panic about it than "pseudo liberals"
(liberals in name only) who believe the good times are here. Ah! You
must be a closet liberal, Mike!

Last week one of the local talk hosts had a local county assessor on who
declared the recession over so they would be taking off the adjustments
made over the last few years so people wouldn't lose their homes. I
don't know what he was smoking but the recession is far from over and a
bigger one on the horizon.

the brain. (-:

But labeling something a god is surely belief?

Salyvin, if the first human labeled something "tree," was there a belief
involved?!

No, because a tree is actually there. If you called it "god" that would mean
you thought it was more than a tree or you didn't have much of an opinion of
god.

I think what you're getting at, esp in your response to JR, is that we label
something as god or divine and these words have meanings that are problematic.
But why are they?

Because we are making unwarranted assumptions about inner experiences with
vast conceptual and historical baggage. Whatever we experience is some cool
stuff going on inside. You can call it what you like but the term god has
implications whatever god it is you believe in or want it to be.

Mind you, at least it's an experience of something nice and profound which is
more than most religious people get!

 Share,

Please, read my reply to Salyavin regarding believing and knowing the Divine
Being. When It is known, the human being can experience enlightenment which is
the coexistence of the self and It in the human body while living in the world.
This is what MMY was saying about living heaven here on earth. As a matter of
fact, this is the message that Moses wanted to convey when he wrote about the
Garden of Eden in Genesis of the Old Testament.

2015-07-20 Thread jr_...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]

There are some issue neither right nor left. It just appears that some
people believe that banning guns is a solution but it isn't. The problem
is probably the economy spiraling out of country and the economic
disparity it creates. It is making many people on the planet crazy.
Solve that instead.

*...*

The story of my gun
Today I swung my front door wide open and placed my Remington
.30-06
right in the doorway. I left 6 cartridges beside it, then
left it alone
and went about my business.

While I was gone, the mailman delivered my mail, the neighbor
boy across
the street mowed the yard, a girl walked her dog down the
street and quite
a few cars stopped at the stop sign near the front of my house.

After about an hour, I checked on the gun. It was still
sitting there,
right where I had left it. It hadn't moved itself outside.
It certainly

hadn't killed anyone, even with the numerous opportunities it
had presented
to do so.

In fact, it hadn't even loaded itself. Well you can imagine
my surprise,
with all the hype by the Left and the Media about how
dangerous guns are
and how they kill people. Either the media is wrong or I have
in my
possession, the laziest gun in the world.

The United States is 3rd in Murders throughout the World. But
if you take
out just 4 cities: Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC and New
Orleans, the
United States is 4th from the bottom, in the entire world, for
Murders.

These 4 Cities also have the toughest Gun Control Laws in the
U.S. ALL 4
of these cities are controlled by Democrats. It would be
absurd to draw
any conclusions from this data - right?
Well, I'm off to check on my spoons. I hear they're making
people fat. *

How about this question instead?

Can an artificial intelligence know God?

This is an equivalent counter-question, which means it is a panapoly of foolish
assumptions posing as intelligent inquiry.

"Know" god? Don't we mean "believe"? I'm sure a computer could acquire beliefs
about where it came from, probably worship it's creator, at least they won't be
in error about who that is!

Yes, and aren't we all God, or so some have postulated?

What! Richard Dawkins learnt (was initiated into) Transcendental Meditation ©

Astonishing claims require astonishing evidence, so let's have a
google..no. Hmmm, there is a mention of him having tried TMS (Transcranial
Magnetic Stimulation) or Michael Persinger's "God Helmet" which is supposed to
induce spiritual experiences. He didn't have one.

TM, TMS, perhaps he missed off the "S" when he was explaining it to someone?
Still, he's a busy man so I won't hold it against him ;-)

Thinking about it though, can you imagine Richard Dawkins at the Puja table?

The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution is the book I am

OK, I haven't got that one actually. If I remember he wrote it because people
were fed up with him going on about religion all the time and wanted to him to
try and convince them off the alternative. Glad it was a success.

 S:

The conversation about what memes society should have predominating is a good
one but I think he's better off sharing his enthusiasm and wisdom about his
favourite subject.

Me: I believe that people who have had a religious experience and belief system
come into Atheism a bit humbled. In my case I can't read any version of clap
trap nonsense that I was not the believer in and often in a much stupider form!
I relate more to people who lost their religion rather than people who never
had any beliefs like that. I can admire them, but that was not my path, and I
don't always feel understood by them.

Did you know Dawkins learned TM? He said he was unimpressed and didn't have any
mystical experiences but that if he had he would have assumed they were
neurological burps or something.

I often wonder what would have happened to him if he'd had the sort of
trip-out I had when I learned. I instantly thought I'd found a disproof of
evolution, how could a subjective experience as powerful and complete as that
be triggered by an Indian word? And from that they reeled me in to believe all
sorts of things about consciousness and DNA, even that I was going to fly!

But the dogmatic approach of the vedic science course made me want to argue
against it as they weren't offering any chance of criticism and no evidence as
justification. All of a sudden the bubble I had constructed burst and I had an
enjoyable time searching out and dismantling the beliefs that had wormed their
way in. It took years and I only finished it here.

Rather odd to look back on myself in those days, the TM revelation caused
quite a change from the convinced Darwinist and astronomy nut that I was before
I learned to meditate but you know how it is, the thrill of discovering an
apparently hidden world of forgotten knowledge from the distant past, complete
with all it's secrets revealed anew to the lost humans of this soulless age.
They really knew how to appeal to us!

I recommend Richard Dawkins' book on evolution if anyone wants to get a better
handle on what it actually is than we can remember from biology class. When I
read it I found that I had some odd perspectives that needed adjusting. We are
by nature drawn to teleological perspectives (ones that presuppose a goal)
because we are order loving and pattern seeking creatures. The statistics of
evolution are extra sensory in scale and counter-intuitive.

It turns out that the genes can do different things to men and women and some
genes prospered in certain environments that we don't live in now. Think of how
many humans got whacked by the most recent ice age. So we are left with a gene
set that survived that condition that may hurt us today.

Non reproducing individuals are no surprise if the gene does something else
over the population that leads to more people with that gene. Again we suck at
statistics so we see one person and draw bogus conclusions before we can blink.
Perversely we think we are good at this inductive reasoning. We equate our
feelings of certainty with the probability it is true.

Dawkins' book was humbling because there was so much about the theory that I
didn't understand. This is the grand theory that is the basis for understanding
