[FairfieldLife] Re: One for those few who can admit to having been Deadheads...

I was a Deadhead back in the 1980s, and the only thing I come away with from
that video is an understanding of why Robert Hunter was not one of the
musicians on stage. Ripple's a great song, and that performance had none of the
magic that the Dead put into it.

True, which is why unwanted male dairy calves often end up slaughtered young,
as veal. It's a huge glaring omission that the website below is totally focused
on the cows, with no mention of the males, which make up 50% of the calves born
every year. Radiance Dairy in Fairfield operates under basically the same

It would make sense to keep a bull or two around for breeding purposes. But,
it is highly unlikely that they keep all males. Unlike Jersey cows, which tend
to be sweet and docile, Jersey bulls are considered the least docile of all
cattle breeds. As steers, they are apparently suitable as draft animals, albeit
not the largest and strongest breed for that task. But, can cutting off a

MUM campus sits right next to a grain elevator, and this new facility will be
about 5 miles away. There's lots of shrieking about GMO dust, but the main
voices in the fight against it are the people from neighboring properties who
will be impacted by the increase in truck traffic. In any event, the location
is outside city limits, so it's beyond the jurisdiction of Fairfield city
government. Years ago, there was huge opposition when the county supervisors
tried to impose zoning in unincorporated Jefferson County, so there's nothing
that prevents Heartland from building the facility. However, such a large
facility will require road improvements, and that involves county government.

2014-04-05 Thread j_alexander_stanley
Wish you'd done this a few weeks earlier, 'cuz we just had to buy a new washing
machine. Our three remaining appliances from 1994 all failed, sequentially,
over the course of a month. First we replaced the dryer, which was taking hours
to dry a load. A couple weeks later, the dishwasher pump started making a loud,
bearing going out kind of noise. And, a couple weeks after that, the washing
machine started drawing huge amounts of current and filling the laundry room
with electrical stink (thankfully, it managed to finish the load of towels and
not leave us with a failed machine full of wet mess.)

20 years ago, my appliance buying philosophy was to buy the highest end that
still had mechanical controls instead of the newfangled electronic controls.
And, I attribute that strategy for getting almost 20 years out of our old
appliances. These days, everything has electronic controls, and we just went
with the best rated, high end stuff. The washer and dryer are Kenmore Elite

The DirecTV iPad app is great as a channel guide and remote control for the
DirecTV receiver. OTOH, the DirecTV app's channel streaming totally sucks, but
pumping the DirecTV receiver's audio and component video into a Belkin
place-shifting device does a fantastic job of streaming all channels and DVR
recordings to the iPad. The iPad in my bedroom is held in a SpiderArm, clamped
to my bedside table, that holds it up in front of my face when I'm in bed. In
the bedroom, I use it primarily as a TV and for doing the occasional web search
or checking the weather. Flat on my back in bed, a tablet is actually the
superior computer platform. Like I said, it's a niche product that does certain
things very well.

The only reason I can think of to own one is that there has actually been a lot

I went the other way and my new low end gadget is a Firefox OS phone which
arrived yesterday. It's a ZTE Open and recommended by Mozilla as a test device
for developing apps for the OS. Firefox OS apps are HTML5 and mainly written
in Javascript. Thing is you can also run these apps on Android and iPhone too
and probably a Windows 8 phone. The target market for Firefox phones are
emerging countries where they can't even afford Android phones. They are even
planning on a $25 smartphone for that market.

There are some quirks with the OS so far. Firefox doesn't display Neo
properly and the right side of messages are cut off. On Android I look at FFL
in Neo with Chrome which handles it fine. In some cases like looking at the
Firefox Marketplace the one button to go back just takes you out of the app
itself. Good points are the battery life seems good. The phone is also GSM so
if I want to try it as a phone I can just use the SIM card from the Android
phone. Otherwise it works fine with wifi. Also it comes with built in FM
receiver.

Yup, most of these devices come with VERY LITTLE documentation. I didn't know
for over a year that the control on the earbuds was really a microphone as
hands free headset.

I also have two Android tablets and an Android Tegra Shield game device.

[FairfieldLife] RE: Wanna feel better? Stop eating sugar!

2014-03-03 Thread j_alexander_stanley
It's true that not all calories are the same, but without a caloric deficit,
weight loss will not occur. And, regardless of macronutrient ratio, if few
enough calories are consumed, weight will be lost. There were a couple guys who
experimented with very high carb intake, one eating nothing but potatoes, and
the other eating a diet that included a lot of Twinkies, and both lost weight.

Personally, I'm not a fundamentalist CICOite (calories in, calories out), but I
place more importance on caloric intake than some macronutrient fanatics who
seem to think all manner of magic will happen if you just avoid one
macronutrient. But, that's just laughably divorced from reality, as Jimmy
Moore, from Livin La Vida Low Carb blog, proved all too well. He managed to
regain 100 pounds, gorging himself on low carb food; he did eventually lose the
weight again, but it took a drastic reduction in caloric intake to do so. In my
own life, if I eat more, I put on weight; if I eat less, I lose weight. The
reason I so easily lose weight on low carb is that satiety is much greater, and
with less hunger, eating less food is effortless. If I wanted to lose weight on
a carby, new-age, hippie diet full of grains, beans, and starches, I'd have to
count calories and endure gnawing hunger.

[FairfieldLife] RE: John M. Knapp: Licensing Board Ruling

2014-02-15 Thread j_alexander_stanley
Interesting... when you posted earlier this morning, I Googled around to
refresh my memory, and the one thing that really stood out for me was the
defrocked therapist self-description he uses to promote himself. I thought it
very odd that a person would accentuate the consequences of his malevolence as
some kind of badge of honor. Strange guy, that one.

---In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, jchwe...@gmail.com wrote:

Thanks for the kind words Anne. Of course, there is a lot that happened
between the lines of the brief outline. IMO (and others who were involved),
Knapp's revocation is a good thing; he has harmed more than one person,
including at least three ex-clients.
From Knapp's online public displays, he has claimed he lost his license over
at least a year ago (and that due to a lawsuit), though that isn't the case
because the ruling wasn't made until January, 2014, and there was never a
lawsuit. Regardless, Knapp seems to wear a lost license (or as he publicly
describes himself as a defrocked therapist) as a badge of being a rebel, or
something. At least now, there is a public official ruling which will make it
difficult for him to get licensed again if he ever would have an interest in
doing so.
Thanks again. Hope you and the horses are well. :-)

[FairfieldLife] RE: TV Musings

2014-02-03 Thread j_alexander_stanley
Of your shows, I'm watching Person of Interest and Justified. Another show that
I've been enjoying is The Blacklist. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm is starting
to wane in that the James Spader character is the only one who holds any
interest for me; better writing and casting could have made it a much better
show.

---In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, turquoi...@yahoo.com wrote:

Just for the heck of it, because I've got the day off today and I'm sitting in
a cafe right now taking advantage of the relatively clement weather and the
sun, but I've gotta write about *something* for it to qualify as a cafe
writing break, so I guess TV is it.

I don't know about anyone else, but TABB (Time After Breaking Bad) has been a
real bitch. That series was so consistently excellent that it really gave you
something to look forward to every week. About the only mainstream shows that
have managed to fill that I'll watch them every week no matter what void are
Justified, True Detective, Person Of Interest, and Lost Girl. I still
give Agents Of Shield a try from time to time, hoping it will get better, but
so far it hasn't. Sigh.

Among new shows that I've stumbled upon, I'm giving a UK series called The
Musketeers a shot, but I doubt I'll continue. I'm also watching a series about
pirates called Black Sails. This one I may continue watching. It's a prequel
to Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, showing the origins of Captain
Flint and John Silver. Think the period authenticity, violence, sex, nudity,
good actors, and production values that Spartacus brought to gladiators, only
done with pirates. Sexy, fun, and so far replete with good performances from
the actors. Go figure.

What I'll be delving into soon, however, is a new set of great TV from
Scandinavia and other places around the world uploaded by a guy who has become
one of my trusted resources in the pirate 'verse. I'll download anything he
puts up, because so far *everything* he's ever posted has been great. He turned
me on to the original The Killing and Borgen and Bron-Broen. So when he
uploads a batch of new stuff, at this point I just download it and look forward
to watching it.

The first of these new potential gems I'll watch later today is from Wales, and
all dialog was actually filmed twice, because they had to do it first in Welsh,
then in English. It's called Hinterlands and I've only seen the first few
minutes of it, but so far it'll be watchable just for the cinematography alone.

There's the full set of Bron-Broen 2 with BBC subtitles, of course, which
I'll watch again to compare it with the fan-subbed version I had earlier.
There's a well-reviewed series from Israel called Prisoners Of War (Hatufim)
that I look forward to, and a series of mini-series specials called Arne
Dahl. Not to mention a few movies I'd never heard of, but will watch simply
because he uploaded them. When you find someone with excellent taste, you've
really gotta appreciate that.

Anyone out there watching anything interesting?

However, I don't think there's any chance of the limit being reimposed. Alex

the posts here except once in a blue moon. Plus which, apparently Neo has made
managing a group nearly impossible. As long as the group pretty much runs

My most recent experience with Cuisinart is my new coffee maker. It got a great
review on Consumer Reports, and the Amazon reviews remarked on how well it
brews coffee. But, also mentioned many times on Amazon is the crappy latch
mechanism on the lid. I figured the problem was a mixture of poor design and
ham-fisted users, and being a more graceful and careful person, I assumed the
latch mechanism would hold up under my gentle touch. WRONG! That latch was
busted within two weeks. Fortunately, the fix is simple: I use a red brick to
keep the lid closed during brewing (the hinge is spring loaded, and with the
latch broken, the lid won't stay down.)

When this machine inevitably dies some day, will I consider getting another
Cuisinart? You betcha! 'Cuz despite the stupid latch, the machine makes really
good coffee!

weirds me out that in 52 years, today is the first time I can recall ever
seeing a picture of that tower.

[FairfieldLife] Astrology and Daylight Savings

2013-11-03 Thread j_alexander_stanley
This morning, a weird dream woke me up at a little before 2am, and my first
thought was that it would be cool to watch my digital radio-controlled clock
shift back to standard time. But, at the top of the hour, the clock stayed on
2am, and I realized that I had woken up during the second 1am hour. And, it got
me wondering how astrology deals with the one day of the year in DST areas
where there are two periods of 1:00am to 1:59am. I guess if an astrologer has
to deal with a 1am hour fall back morning birth time that doesn't specify DST
or standard time, he'll have to run both charts and see which one is the better
fit. I'd like to assume that hospitals would make a point of taking note of
which 1am hour, but I know from my own birth certificate that hospitals aren't
always focused on recording accurate birth time.

I have some sort of carbohydrate sensitivity/reactive hypoglycemia, but it's
really only a problem if I eat meals with a lot of starch. If I need to go as
much as 7 hours without eating, I eat a steak slathered with butter. That keeps
me going for hours and hours, and when hunger does return, it is very gentle.
As it happens, in addition to having 2.9% Neanderthal DNA, I am also APO E4/E4,
which puts me at the highest risk of Alzheimer's. As I understand it, the E4
variant is the most ancient form of that allele, which amuses me greatly
because in the rarefied woo community that is Fairfield, I am literally a less
evolved creature. From what I've read, sensitivity to carbohydrate is not
uncommon with E4s, which makes us less able to handle a diet of cheap,
fungible, neolithic grains/beans than our more evolved E2 and E3 brethren. With
Alzheimer's sometimes described as diabetes of the brain, I figure I'm on the
right track keeping carb intake low enough to maintain even blood sugar levels.

bad vegetarian diets. Many went back to eating meat and felt better. Maybe
some truth in MMY's eat what your mother puts before you? We are essentially

If one is paranoid about hypoglycemia the tendency is to overeat rather than
do the anal and inconvenient small meals throughout the day.

2013-10-16 Thread j_alexander_stanley
“Our research supports the theory that high-fat/ high-sugar foods stimulate
the brain in the same way that drugs do,” Neuroscience Professor Joseph
Schroeder said in a school press release.

For me, the problem isn't the sugar or the fat, but rather the starch, which
is ultimately just pure glucose. Back in 2003, when I was gorging myself to
190+ pounds, my favorite snack binge was an entire box of Newman-Os, Paul
Newman's organic version of Oreos, which I would inhale in a matter of minutes.
I'd then sleep off the blood sugar crash and have a few dried dates when I woke
up. It was an endless blood sugar roller coaster. But, I can eat a pint of ice
cream and be completely satisfied and suffer no blood sugar issues. To crash my
blood sugar on ice cream, I have to eat a quart or more, and ice cream just
doesn't have that binge driving effect on me that starchy snack foods do.

Yes, I am very much enjoying her character development. I now find myself
actually rooting for root.

Another show I'm really enjoying is The Blacklist, with James Spader. What was
interesting to me is that James Spader seemed so very familiar to me, but I
couldn't place him. So, I looked him up on IMDB, and there were only two things
I'd seen, only one of which I remember: the episode of Seinfeld where he plays
the guy who won't apologize to George. He seems to have a permanent, built-in
snarkiness that is very distinctive.

Isn't the character of Root a gas? I am *so* happy that
Johnathon Nolan and the writers of this series realized
what a resource they had on their hands, and gave Amy
Acker a role she could sink her teeth into.

She was my favorite actress on Dollhouse, and for
similar reasons -- she could play seemingly normal one
minute, and beyond demented the next, seamlessly. Root
is crazier than a bedbug, but the voices really *are*
talking to her. How do you explain that to your shrink
in the mental hospital they've committed you to *except*
to do what she did in episode three of this season?

I'm hoping that they keep her front and center throughout
 the rest of the series...
