Ahem, the CIA backed a confederation of Mujaheddin to fight the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Osama Ben Laden organized and started Al Qaeda after the Soviets were driven out. The Taliban were one group of Mujaheddin that eventually took control of the Afghan government from all the rest and then sponsored Al Qaeda.
