Fascinating history of the drink once described as
"an 'intellectual beverage' among well-off whites"
and coveted for its aphrodisiac qualities. It was
originally made from cocaine, after all, which when
combined with alcohol, produces a potent drug called
cocaethylene. So you drank your Coca-Cola, maybe with
a little liquor mixed in, and you got all hot and
bothered.

And that's where racism reared its ugly head. First
marketed in the South, Coca-Cola soon found its way
out of the hands of the rich white folks and into
the hands of Negros. Who were going to drink it and
get all hot and bothered, too, and start looking at
white women. Can't have that. Voila. No more coke
in Coke.
