The name that was given to the region was "Philistia" and the people
were known as the Phillistines, hence the name "Palestine"

"After being repulsed by the Egyptians, they occupied the coastal
plain of Palestine from Joppa (modern Tel Aviv–Yafo) southward to
the Gaza Strip. The area contained the five cities (the Pentapolis)
of the Philistine confederacy (Gaza, Ashkelon [Ascalon], Ashdod,
Gath, and Ekron) and was known as Philistia, or the Land of the
Philistines. It was from this designation that the whole of the
country was later called Palestine by the Greeks. "
---Encyclopedia Brittanica

The British called the country they mandated in 1917 "Palestine".
The League of Nations called it "Palestine". The Arabs living there
were referred to as Palestinian Arabs, the Jews living there were
referred to as Jewish Palestinians, even by themselves. Even the
jews living there called the region Palestine for centuries or
longer.

In 1922, the British declared that the boundary of Palestine would
be limited to the area west of the river. The area east of the
river, called Transjordan (now Jordan), was made a separate British
mandate and eventually given independence (See map at right) . A
part of the Zionist movement felt betrayed at losing a large area of
what they termed "historic Palestine" to Transjordan, and split off
to form the "Revisionist" movement, headed by Benjamin Vladimir
(Ze'ev) Jabotinsky.
