UHF TV is in the gigahertz range:

Sure, but several things:

TV/Radio aren't in the gigahertz range, which has peculariar physical
properties compared to microwave and longer waves, or so I
understand, and gigahertz happens to be in the range for the resonate
frequency for DNA, so the biological issue for TV/Radio isn't nearly
as big an issue anyway (unless you fall asleep INSIDE a transmitter
and roast as has happened with hikers and microwave transmitters).

And, as you say, the antennas aren't right next to your head for
TV/Radio except when you fall asleep inside.

If that is true (and I am not seeing any evidence that it is), it
would be at minimal power level, certainly not anywhere near
approaching the power output of the antenna itself. People walk
through a maze of minimal electromagnetic output all day long,
TV/Radio signals, etc, so these minimal outputs are surely not a
problem like an antenna close to one's head might pose.

Any metal part that is electrically connected to the rest of the
phone is a "transmitter" in the gigahertz range -- even the internals
of your iPod earbud would be.

Lest anyone think this is more paranoid thinking, keep in mind that
the Motorola engineer who was testing the first prototype DID die of
a brain tumor on the same side of his head that he held the phone on.
Motorola then dropped the power output drastically to the point that
its difficult if impossible to establish a correlation between cell
phone use and brain cancer.

HOWEVER, brain imaging of people while they are using cell phones
show that there is a clear effect on brain functioning, at least
close to the ear that the phone is next to. In young kids (4 or so
years or younger), the effect goes at least halfway through their
brain.

No-one knows exactly what this kind of electronnic radiation does to
the brain, if anything, but I avoid cell phones use though I *will*
talk to someone for a minute if they ask to talk to me on one.

Experiments have shown that the antenna radiation travels up the wire ear-
piece cord to the ear-piece at the head. An ear-piece with an air-tube to
the ear-piece at the head prevents the radiation from traveling up the
wire cord and being radiated at the head.

I don't have a problem with the possibility that cellphones may pose
a microwave radiation hazard, but I think Bevan is a little shaky on
the concept: it's the transmitter/antenna that broadcasts the
radiation, not the speakers, and it does not make any difference
whether metal parts that are not transmitters are close to the head,
as they would not be "conducting" the radiation:

"CellAntenna Corporation, a
leading provider of solutions that solve cellular communication
problems,
today announced the potential health benefits of its external
cellular antenna
products. According to Howard Melamed, CEO of CellAntenna
Corporation,
external cellular antennas drastically decrease the cellular phones
level of
microwave radiation absorbed by the human body when used properly.
Studies examining the health effects of prolonged exposure to
cellular
phone electromagnetic radiation (EMR) have been inconclusive or have
produced
mixed results. But the reality is that cellular phones emit
microwave signals
that are partially absorbed by the body as users make and receive
calls on
cellular phones. The radiation level produced by cellular phones is
exacerbated by environmental interference and sparse cellular
signals, as
phones are engineered to operate at full power while in areas with a
limited
cellular signal.
Cell phone users can route the cellular radiation away by
installing an
external antenna that connects to their cell phone via an adapter.
The
antenna is then placed at a distance away from them. Additionally,
external
antennas reduce the radiation power output level of cell phones by
helping
them relay their signals more efficiently to the nearest cellular
towers.
Having lower power output has the added effect of lowering battery
power
consumption and increasing talk time.
