Yes, the posts (plural) by other people that led up to Emily's single post to
which I responded (and which she fully understood). You see, I did read other
people's posts, and then 1 by Emily to which I responded. Is that clear now?
Can you see how that might happen?

Wow, this should be the worst problem in my life, and yours too. Seriously.
Judy, I don't care about this now. And since I was distracted on the phone last
night - and apparently missed a post, I don't care about that either, nor do I
feel guilty or as if I made a big mistake. I made a brief post in response to
few words in a post by Emily. Emily was fine with it (as she wrote), and so
am I.

Oh, for chrissakes, Susan, get real! The post you
were responding to *called to your attention exactly
that prior post*. What did you think "Read Emily's
post which came before this one" meant? How is one
to interpret "I did read Emily's post" as referring
to anything other than that prior post you'd just
been told to read?

Look down here at what Robin had written that you
were responding to--that you quoted in your post--
the second sentence (I put it in capital letters
so you won't miss it):

And you responded: "I read Emily's post."

Later, in response to me, you wrote, "I read the posts"
(plural).

Are you on the telephone now as you're reading and
responding? It seems like you must be, because you
sure aren't paying attention.

Yes, I did write that I had read Emily's post, but I was referring to the one
post of hers I had read, not the prior one that I was not aware of. There was
no deceit on my part, simply that I did not know there was an earlier post I
had not read. I was distracted by my phone call, so I must have missed it.

Of course, he didn't post on your account but under his

Interesting, because last night you claimed to have read
Emily's earlier post too:

==
I did read Emily's post.

Nothing selective about my reading on this. I read the posts.
I just don't "side" with you, which is a very different thing
than selective reading.

And of course my comment had zero to do with whether you

No, I was not aware that Robin posted "on my account." But thanks for letting
me know, Steve. I have so little time to read FFL that I am often way behind
on things here. In fact, I won't even be bothering to go back and see what

Robin can speak for himself if he chooses to bother,
but I very much doubt he craves even a footnote in
the history of spirituality in North America.

Au contraire, Pierre, I have almost more going on in
my life (very good stuff) than I can deal with. A lot
more than Barry does, in fact, and he's a whole four
years younger than I am.

It's always a crapshoot trying to determine whether
one of Barry's many self-contradictions is a function
of his failing memory about what he's said previously,
or his conviction that everyone *else's* memory is
deficient.

I suspect, though, that anyone who reads his posts
will remember quite well his urgent warnings--some
very recent--of my power to recruit others to my point
of view concerning those he refers to as my "enemies."

As Stupid Sal would say, it would be funny if it
weren't so sad. (Or, alternatively, it would be sad
if it weren't so funny.)

I snipped the post of mine Barry quoted, the one in
which I told maskedzebra to get lost. MZ, of course,
was one of my most successful and prominent converts.
He would never, *ever* have taken a dim view of Curtis
had it not been for my efforts.

But now that their enmity appears to be engraved in
stone, MZ seems to think he has some kind of "in" with
me. He requires reminding every now and then that he's
served his purpose and has no claim on my attention or
favor.

Dear Curtis. Thank you for asking for a re-post of this. I missed it as well.
Objectively, without parsing the details, this is a brilliant piece of work.
Robin has managed, somehow, to capture almost perfectly his own MO from your
perspective and others' actually, although perhaps not exclusively, as you
note. How many people are able to represent so accurately another's viewpoint
of themselves - he must have tried on the Reality of it all, dontcha
think...maybe just one shoe? You must admit you have made these key points on
many occasions, albeit using different words:

Look, Robin, I think you are a good guy, very sincere and all that; but you
have one fatal flaw: you seek to judge the motivations of other persons, and
not only do you fumble and stumble around (it is actually quite embarrassing,
Robin), but you actually miss hitting the truth of the person altogether.

You can intuit all you like, Robin, but the act of judging what someone says by
what you believe to be their inner faults, this is not only inappropriate and
offensive--it is the most unreliable form of truth there could ever be. But
beyond this, Robin, it is violation of the code of human relationships. You
have just gone one step too far here, Robin, in your rather pathetic and
unconvincing analysis of irony. And I don't appreciate your bringing me into
your little dance of self-congratulations.

I would just ask you one more time, Robin: Deal with me on the basis of what I
write. You see, Robin, you can't act as if you are the knower of what
my motives are, my character.

Robin, can't see how you are acting out a little ritual here which has become
so familiar to most of us that at this point it just seems like a cheap Vegas
act--where the audience dwindles every night.

Now, this last oneyour analogies are more creative, but the spirit is
captured. Curtis, you have the skill set to reply in-kind, should you so
choose. If I were you, I wouldn't waste my time responding to Robin's request
to "show" him what about his post *wasn't* an accurate reflection of your
position. Sounds like you might be finished for the day though; it was a
helluva show and thank you for your participation. It might have been annoying
as hell from your seat, but from mine, it was insanely funny. But, just so you
know, I am *not* laughing at your expense. I thank you for letting Robin get
under your skin a bit. It was good for me Curtis, I hope it was good for you
too.

Emily

A couple things. We hear from Judy that she feels she must always set
the record straight.
I guess I have some of that as well. For the most part I am a lurker.
I am probably a 15 posts a week person. But certain things bug me, and
I am willing to make a stand on them. I guess I am somewhat like Susan
in that regard.
And really, this whole issue concerns mostly Curtis. I mean others were
also subject to the hijacking of their POV, but so far Curtis is the
only one who is pressing it. I wonder if Susan is aware of the post
that was made on her account by Robin. Who knows.
And I admit Barry, that I have been enjoying this exchange, but with the
caveat, that it is not my POV that has been hijacked, or parodied, or
whatever you want you want to call it. And then this morning, I
thought, for a moment, that it might actually be fun for someone to
assume my POV in a post. But then, thinking about further, I don't
think there is anyone I trust enough to do that. I mean if it were
temporary, that would be one thing. But as has been pointed out, these
are permanent postings.
And I enjoyed your "apologies" in whatever spirit you posted them.

If you had you would have realized that *it is incidental* if the irony
is in the service of one's own opinions, biases, predilections-or is
against them: for something to be ironic, it is only *up to reality
itself*. The moment you begin to obrain delight in something someone has
said about someone else, *there is no reality there, Stevie, boy*. For
irony impersonalizes everything; puts a person into a unknown experience
over which they have no control.
I am sure this is correct. Barry's post, I am sure did not meet these
parameters. But I wasn't evaluating it on that basis.
> Barry did not interface with reality; he only interfaced with himself.
Ergo, he voided the irony potential altogether. You can't do irony from
some conviction of feeling--you have to do irony from a strictly
disinterested and impartial standpoint in the universe: you have to let
reality *represent itself*. (Even if your starting motive is some strong
affect.)
Well, we will disqualify it as irony, and put it in the slam category.

Because it just gave you a great experience of satisfaction that Barry
seemed to be getting back at Robin and the editor dame. But that is not
what irony is all about whatsoever; irony has to be so good that the
person who deploys it can laugh as hard at what he or she has said or
written--as if someone else has said or written it. And the victim, he
or she, too, has to fight not to laugh--*at himself or herself*.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Apologies from Robin and Judy

2012-09-11 Thread maskedzebra
Dear Steve,

Wait for your letter; but I couldn't help myself: This one word is the best
(and most ironic) response there could be to Barry's ID impersonations.
Therefore, you realize how far you are from understanding irony when you see it
[irony]. Had I thought of this one word as a response to Barry's post *I would
have eagerly seized upon it*.

That is, me, Robin, would have decided this was *better than anything that I
could come up with* to remain consistent and intelligent in all that I believe
about Barry.

The problem here, Steve, is you did not understand my essay on irony. If you
had you would have realized that *it is incidental* if the irony is in the
service of one's own opinions, biases, predilections-or is against them: for
something to be ironic, it is only *up to reality itself*. The moment you begin
to obrain delight in something someone has said about someone else, *there is
no reality there, Stevie, boy*. For irony impersonalizes everything; puts a
person into a unknown experience over which they have no control.

Barry did not interface with reality; he only interfaced with himself. Ergo, he
voided the irony potential altogether. You can't do irony from some conviction
of feeling--you have to do irony from a strictly disinterested and impartial
standpoint in the universe: you have to let reality *represent itself*. (Even
if your starting motive is some strong affect.)

If you loved Barry's posts (re: me and the editor dame) then it certainly was
"perfection" for YOU. But it had nothing to do with irony, for if Barry's post
had been suitably and objectively ironic, *you would have had an experience
over which you had no control*.

Irony only works on *its* terms; it has no favourites.

The irony that Barry attempted failed. And why did it fail, Steve? Because it
just gave you a great experience of satisfaction that Barry seemed to be
getting back at Robin and the editor dame. But that is not what irony is all
about whatsoever; irony has to be so good that the person who deploys it can
laugh as hard at what he or she has said or written--as if someone else has
said or written it. And the victim, he or she, too, has to fight not to
laugh--*at himself or herself*.

There can be no ambiguity when irony is going on, Steve: Barry's post did not
touch me--*even as I would have been instructed and edified if it had*--and I
would look forward to that experience.

If you're going to write an anti-Book of Mormon you have to find the same
metaphysical formula that Stone and Parker found to write their play. But at
the same time you have to go one level higher. Barry's post was like someone
going hysterical about the possibly implied atheism of Stone and Parker--and
calling them names because of this.

What Barry had to do to make it here, Steve, was show that Mormonism on its own
could make more fun of Stone and Parker's *The Book of Mormon* than the play
had succeeded in ridiculing the LDS Church.

Irony is an entirely objective phenomenon. It is an equal opportunity
phenomenon. Which means that Barack Obama could make fun of Mitt Romney; but if
Mitt was going to have a comeback (if he was as upset as Barry was on behalf of
his friend), he would have to *take in the irony potency and after-effect of
the ironic remark of Obama*, and then go one better--or at least hold his own.

Your rejoicing at Barry's post just proved how irony-challenged you are,
Steve--not from some organic limitation--but from some flaw in your approach to
reality: you haven't figured out how to look for the complex secret in every
moment when there is a conflict like this.

While walking this morning (not knowing about your post here) I had the
thought: I should impersonate myself (as Barry or his friend); in other words
*attempt exactly what Barry attempted* but show him how it was done. Mock
myself, then, Steve! I think I could do a pretty good job of it.

And that is the trait one seeks above all in trying to master the art of irony:
that one ruthlessly sees the contingent possibility of sending oneself up AT
ANY AND EVERY OPPORTUNITY; therefore one is always in a potentially ironic
relationship to oneself when one acts in the world--or posts at FFL.

You should consider this idea, Steve. It would save you from the unconscious
Monty Python grotesquerie of this very post of yours. But that said, I wish I
had said this very thing.

Much love to you Steve,

Robin

Hey, you know. I kinda changing my tune. Robin, will you do me.
Pretty please.

Well, maybe not. As Curtis says, this stuff is forever.

It's just not kosher. But at least we now have the ground rules. The
parodied person can ask not to have it done, but they must, if asked,
describe what part of the parody they find objectionable. And of
course, then that would be open to debate.

Does this sound kind of crazy?

Sort of like was this a "legitimate" rape, or a forceable rape?

[FairfieldLife] Re: Apologies from Robin and Judy

2012-09-10 Thread Robin Carlsen

It was good for me Curtis, I hope it was good for you
too.

 Emily

Dear Barry,

I rescind my judgment here, as I realized you eschewed any irony. My Curtis
posts were charged with irony. You have obviously mortified that
temptation--and I feel certain Susan will sense the virtue of this.

Why not try irony next time, though? I am sure it would be salutary for me.

P.S. At least Steve won't be offended by this.

Do I really have to ask you not to do this very douchey thing, Barry, really?

OK then I'll ask. Please don't sign my full name at the bottom of straw men
versions
of my POV out of respect for the fact that most of us just skim posts within our
otherwise busy days and it is hard enough to keep track without this in the mix.
There were many statements in what you write here, Barry, that I wouldn't want
anyone to
think I had generated. If you want to play fast and lose with accuracy and just
assume other people will keep up, please do it at your expense in the future, not
mine. This shit we put up on the Internet is FOREVER. It carries some
