They're building 5 new SV homes in Utopia Park, all really close to each other, as I found out yesterday when I read the Ledger. It will be really interesting to see whether or not they are all facing East, because if they are they're all going to be facing directly into UP, not exactly the most inspiring view in the world.

The one thing I've noticed is that when I meditate facing East there
is a difference, feels a little easier (yep, I know its an
effortless technique...). And fortunately we have a tiny bedroom
where we must face North when meditating.

Other than that, imo, meditating is better than not meditating,

The trailers were set up for the Taste of Utopia course. They weren't
designed or intended to be there 25 years. Many of them are in pretty sorry
shape.

People who want to live near the domes are fast becoming one of the most extinct species on the planet, Bob.

But you could very well be right about UP--while the park itself looks OK, some of the trailers have become a real eyesore, old and dilapidated. But anyway, I did mosey on over there this morning to see, and, sure enough, all of them are facing east, the front ones right into a row of trailers, the back ones into the front ones. I sure hope whoever buys them likes his neighbors a lot--the houses are *real* close together, with just a few feet between them. Anything resembling a yard is pretty much out.

I thought the facing east thing was so the morning sun can hit your house. How can it do that if another house is a few feet away?

An excellent question, Rick.

Why don't you truck on over and take a look, when you have the chance? Maybe I'm missing something that you might be able to see, but it sure looks pretty cramped to me. Also, the foundations are really small.

There's supposedly some direction-related changes in the hippocampus that COULD have
some beneficial/deletorious effect on meditation, depending on which direction you were
facing. I know of no meditation-related research on this, but there IS documentation that
facing different directions can have measureable effects on how the hippocampus
processes things and since the hippocampus is such an important section of the brain, as
goes the hippocampus, etc...

But I suppose I am reading it in context of something I read that
MMY say recently about vashtu being the most important thing that a

It's a conspiracy. I heard MMY mention it once or twice, but he didn't make
a big deal of it. That was 1970. These days he makes a bigger deal of such
things, SV and all.

Don't get excited...MMY didn't introduce SthapathyaVed for many
years, and in fact, OKed the dome with its inauspicious south
entrance and round shape -- Vedic knowledge cannot be dispensed all
at once in an ignorant age. This advice about direction falls into
the category of do it, if conveniently possible, and those who are
happy with their practice of TM will continue to be happy regardless
of what direction they did or will face during practice.

I suspect that when the domes were build, he hadn't looked into SV and
didn't know much about it. Either that or didn't consider it very important.
Or hadn't realized it's economic potential.

Sthapathya Ved is a well-known feature of Vedic knowledge, and many
people in India have built SV for centuries, so he certainly did know.

The only conclusion I can draw is that MMY deliberately moderated the
growth of enlightenment values by building the dome round and with a
south entrance (in SV, the circle represents the ever-restless nature
of water, which would be OK for a sports stadium, but opposed to the
purpose of a meditation dome, which should be square/rectangular,
which represents the solidity/stability of earth -- since the dome has
been rectified, it now has a vastu fence which is supposed to bring it
into squareville as much as it can without being rebuilt, also the
south entrance has been closed up).

Why would a sage want to slow down the growth of enlightenment values?:

Gosh, Shemp, maybe the post on the Web got
  truncated
somehow, but I didn't see anything about its
  being
 important, let alone so important.

 Did you?

Good point.

But I suppose I am reading it in context of

MMY say recently about vashtu being the most
  important thing
  that a
nation could do and, of course, a large part of
  vastu has to do
with direction of entrances and all that.

I'd guess that if somebody had to *ask* him about
what direction you should face when you're
  meditating,
he considers it a relatively minor point, one of
  those
little refinements that's nice to observe if you
  want
to go to the trouble, but no more than that.

That one's better known. Maharishi said at Humboldt that they buried the
Buddha with his head pointing North because they wanted his body to
decompose quickly. Many a meditator has rearranged the beds in a motel room
so as not to sleep with the head pointing North. East is best, then South,
then West.

I sleep in an easy chair which, when reclined, has my head facing
east. BUT when it is in the upright position, my face faces
west...seems that that is NOT a good position to do TM in, correct?
