I assumed it was meant as an ironic comment on TMO homophobia.
Merv wasn't out, but it wasn't exactly a big secret during his
lifetime that he was gay, and it became public knowledge after
he died in 2007.
On the other hand, the U.S. movement certainly gives Merv huge
credit. The burst of initiations in the mid-'70s is typically
referred to as the Merv wave.
