Don't we all have African roots? If you go back far enough. There was some excitement a few years back when it was claimed that we humans are all descendants of one "Eve". (No! Not the one in Genesis!) Geneticists concluded that every person on Earth right now can trace his or her lineage back to a single common female ancestor who lived around 200,000 years ago. Because one entire branch of human lineage is of African origin and the other contains African lineage as well, the study's authors concluded Africa is the place where this woman lived. The scientists named this common female ancestor "Mitochondrial Eve". I can't see (via a quick Google search) if this theory has since been discounted but I'm hoping it's actually true. Partly because it's an effective response to crude forms of racism. But even more because the theory is both mind-blowingly astonishing and unexpected and yet also deeply touching and sublime. Someone raised the question on FFL a while back about where and when we would like to visit if we had a time machine.
