It seems to me that the election will be very close indeed.
If Nader can concentrate all he's got into just a couple of
Republican marginal States, and in the eight weeks left, get a
good showing in the polls, then, by promising to urge his
supporters to vote Obama, he could end up as a King maker,
and secure an office in the new administration.

The NLP has ballot access in only a few states:

"The Natural Law Party was organized in the United States in the spring
of 1992, but its founders disbanded it in 2004. Nevertheless, it
remains on the ballot in a few states. In California, it will be
removed from the ballot in November 2006, since the law requires a
party to poll 2% for at least one statewide nominee, and no one filed
in its primary.

In Hawaii, the law is ambiguous. Since it was on the ballot for 3
elections in a row (1996-2000), it is entitled to be on automatically
for another 5 elections, or through the 2010 election. However, it is
possible Hawaii's Elections Departments will still consider it
disqualified since no one filed in its primary in 2004. The filing
period for 2006 ends in July.

In Idaho and Michigan, it is possible that individuals who have not
been associated with the party in the past will obtain the party's
nomination. In Idaho, a party remains on the ballot as long as it has
at least 3 nominees for state or federal office. In Idaho, where the
party nominates by primary, filing ends March 17. The Michigan deadline
for a party to submit nominees (chosen by convention) is not until
July.

The party is also qualified in Florida and Mississippi, states in which
any party that submits a list of state party officers is considered
qualified.

Nobody had to pay NLP founders anything, since they abandoned the
party. Anybody willing to step up to the plate could have the NLP, and
that's what Nader did in Michigan to avoid the expense of starting a
new party on the ballot (getting signatures, etc) -- people who want to
vote Nader will just to write him in other states where the NLP no
longer has ballot access:

"The Natural Law Party was organized in the United States in 1992, and
it ceased to exist as a national organization in 2004. All of its state
units will be dropping off the ballot in November 2006, except for the
Michigan unit. The Michigan branch of the party is the only one in the
nation running any candidates. Because the Michigan procedures for
parties to remain on the ballot are quite lenient, it is overwhelmingly
likely that the Michigan Natural Law Party will still be ballot-
qualified in 2008.

The NLP is no longer a national party. SOme NLP state parties may still
exist, but they're not part of any nationaly organized group that I am
aware of.

This is a very good question. I heard Ron Paul interviewed about the
possibility of going third party, and he said, with a third party, the
process of getting on the ballot in the states you want is a very time
consuming process, with lots of paperwork and money to be spent.

So going with the NLP was easier because some of the expense / time
consuming paperwork had already been done?

Someone explain this please. Does the NLP still have ballot access in
many states from the past? Did they sell this ballot access to Nader?
