Knowing Rick's moderation style, the likelihood of him booting any of
you guys is nil. However, during your last little vacation, things
were pretty mellow around here. One solution: you deliver one of your
usual grandiose, self-important forum farewells and kick yourself off
FFL for a few months.

I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. It seems there

Barry Wright, Master of Inadvertent Irony.

And SO FAR, Judy has not even acknowledged that
there is even an ISSUE surrounding her. Unlike
Sparaig, who was at least honest enough to say
that he considers the legitimate complaints that
people have been making about his posting behavior
a joke and that he has no plans to change anything,
Judy has as far as I know not even acknowledged
that there has even *been* such a discussion.

She CERTAINLY has not made any post suggesting
that she's heard the complaints, has considered
them, and is willing to try to *change* the behavior
that people have been complaining about.

Therefore, what does she suggest that people on
FFL *DO*? She's ignoring the whole issue, hoping
that it will go away so she can keep posting as
often and as inappropriately as she wants.

The only thing that's gotten her attention so
far is my suggestion that she be banned from
the group for several months. I would suggest
to the FFL moderators that this should tell you
something. She won't self-correct. Some action
is going to be necessary from your side if you
want to change things, and this is the ONLY
thing she has responded to so far.

Give the bitch a time out of several months
and then let her come back and at that point
see if she's learned anything and proceed
accordingly. That's not censorship, that's
taking an agressive but compassionate approach
with someone who is out of control and who has
demonstrated that she's not sane enough to try
to re-establish control herself.

To make it fair, revoke my posting rights for
exactly as long as you revoke hers. Or, as
Alex has suggested, ask me to leave if you
think that'll cut down on her and Sparaig's
hysteria. Whatever you think will help, I am
willing to do it without coercion.

I think Judy has established that she is not.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Vote here for the Aliens solution

2006-09-22 Thread wayback71

For those who have joined FFL within the past year, FFL has always had ups and
downs,
wild posters, characters flaring up, overposters etc -They stay for a few
months, seem to
recover, continue on at FFL or leave and drop in again from time to time. But
this current
situation has settled into what appears to be a compulsion. Maybe this is the
sitatuion
most chat groups are going to find as time passes. Since this is a community,
then setting
some limits is one option. Setting limits should help make things here more
reasonable for
everyone and give overposters some structure within which to function.

Who is going to do this, however? Rick is busy and has a very full life, and I
do not know if
he agrees with the principle behind this idea. He might want to let FFL
remains as a looser
spot without these types of limits. That is another option, just continue as
is and do your
own filtering out of overposters. The downside of that is that FFL won't be
getting as many
new people to sign on in the future, however because looking at a typical page
of 30 posts
isnot too inviting anymore. If it comes to a vote, I vote to set limits. 300
to 400 posts per
month is enough for anyone to contribute in one forum-

What Barry insisted was censorship with regard
to the 9/11 film on ABC was the appeals to ABC to
choose to do something about the situation on its
own.

In no case did I or anyone else suggest that if ABC
refused to take appropriate measures, it should be
*forced* to withdraw the film or reschedule it or
even give opposing viewpoints a chance to be heard.

Barry. They just don't care. Your endless convoluted
posts proving what a liar he is are insane. You are
only proving it to yourself. Do you really think
people follow your proofs of Barry's hypocrisy or
lies? Start your own group or personally mail each

Just one last statistic, because it's relevant
to Alex's solution --

last little vacation, things were pretty mellow around here.

I might suggest that this is a subjective perception. :-)

In terms of actual numbers, August (when I was away
from FFL) was one of sparaig's and authfriend's
*highest ever* posting months.

July:
-- authfriend - 647 posts, 15.4% of total
-- sparaig -- 506 posts, 12.0% of total

August:
-- authfriend - 664 posts, 15.5% of total
-- sparaig -- 679 posts, 15.8% of total

One solution: you deliver one of your usual grandiose,
self-important forum farewells and kick yourself off
 FFL for a few months.

If I thought it would work, I'd do it. But statistics
show that it not only doesn't help, their posting rate
actually GOES UP when I'm not around.

If there were a very easy way to monitor volume and quality of posts and impose some sort of restriction, I might consider it. But it would have to be something I didnt have to invest much time in. I favor the solution of having people delete or killfile all posts from the abusers, but this would deprive them of the insightful things these people occasionally say. And it takes a while for new members to learn about this. Unfortunately, people often subscribe then unsubscribe a few days later because they are overwhelmed with volume of useless posts.

I like this suggestion. Youre one of my favorite posters, Barry. But you get into pissing contests with Judy, I hit the delete button. When you do this often enough, I start deleting whole blocks of your posts. Why dont you take ignoring Judys posts as some sort of Buddhist exercise in self-control? If you dont engage her in any way, maybe this will diminish the volume of her posts too.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Vote here for the Aliens solution

2006-09-22 Thread new . morning
I applaud Turq for his creatively thinking about how can we make this
thing work. And I like the direction of his suggestions. They offer
some good refinements, and practicalities, over what i suggested
yesterday.

In that spirit of creative problem solving, diologue and refinement, I
offer the following encouragement and refinements:

1) I agree that some fixed number of posts per time period is easier
to implment and more practical than my suggested % of posts.

I think 7-10 posts a day is a good upper limit.

I do suggest a refinment in the time period. I think a month may be a
bit too long a monitoring period. If someone is on a compulsive,
venting or minutia jag, it may be better for them to send them more
immediate feedback. And keeps FFL from being choked during the 2-3
week lead up to their reaching their limits.

Thus I suggest:

* a limit of 70 posts for any 7 day period. Thats 10 posts per day.

* voluntary monitors. Thus it would not take any of the moderators
time -- other than to pull the plug on someone, and reinstate them (30
seconds).

Thus if someones posts seem excessive, anyone can pull the stats, post
them, and if non-disputed, moderators will pull the plug.

* time-outs would be one week for the first two time-outs. Two weeks
thereafter.

This is not as harsh as a full months suspension. And may be enough
feed-back for those seeking to become responsive and cordial FFL citizens.

-

As far as immediate suspension of Judy, Sparaig and Shemp, while i
feel that may hve some merit, it is sort of an ex post facto
imposition of new rules. And without self-governing guidelines for FFL
-- an separate initiative i am working on -- its not practical IMO.

I do feel some action is appropriate given today, Sparaig's, (and
shemp's to a degree) childish response to a serious issue. Total
snubbing of noses, and no acknowledgement of their abuse of FFL, nor
any constructive diologue. And Judy's only response appears to be to
bash Barry. Again and Again. No acknowledgment, no constructive diologue.

Thus I suggest the following -- echoing and perhaps extending the
suggestions of others. It can be done immediately. No need for Ricks
approval.

For one month:

* Do not under any circumstances respond to any post of these three
(Sparaig, Judy and Shemp) -- directly or indirectly (referencing it in
a post to others).

* Do not under any circumstances respond to any poster who does
continue responding to these three.

My sense is that without fuel of posts to bounced off of, these
three will pretty much dry up. Or at least reduce posts of
self-declarations and self-importance.

And if they hyper-react with 100's of silly see me posts -- it
simply builds a case for the need for explicit time-out rules.

As an alternative, I suggest the following -- something that we as
posters can implement immediately.

button. When you do this often enough, I start deleting whole
blocks of your posts. Why don¹t you take ignoring Judy¹s posts
as some sort of Buddhist exercise in self-control? If you don¹t
engage her in any way, maybe this will diminish the volume of
 her posts too.

Exactly as I said a couple of posts ago. If Barry
could be persuaded to stop *attacking* people, it
would cut way down on both the volume and the ill
feeling.

 * time-outs would be one week for the first two time-outs. Two
weeks

This is not as harsh as a full months suspension. And may be enough
feed-back for those seeking to become responsive and cordial FFL
citizens.

 -

As far as immediate suspension of Judy, Sparaig and Shemp, while i
feel that may hve some merit, it is sort of an ex post facto
imposition of new rules. And without self-governing guidelines for
FFL
-- an separate initiative i am working on -- its not practical IMO.

I do feel some action is appropriate given today, Sparaig's, (and
shemp's to a degree) childish response to a serious issue. Total
snubbing of noses, and no acknowledgement of their abuse of FFL,
nor
any constructive diologue. And Judy's only response appears to be
to
bash Barry. Again and Again. No acknowledgment, no constructive
diologue.

Thus I suggest the following -- echoing and perhaps extending the
suggestions of others. It can be done immediately. No need for
Ricks
 approval.

 For one month:

 * Do not under any circumstances respond to any post of these three
(Sparaig, Judy and Shemp) -- directly or indirectly (referencing
it in
 a post to others).
