FW:
The IA assembly is an expression of group coherence based on Maharishi's
programs to develop consciousness. Development of consciousness is such a
delicate area, and this knowledge has been so corrupted and misinterpreted over
the centuries, that it behooves us to follow Maharishi's instructions very
carefully, else risk the knowledge being lost again. Not to mention, hurting
ourselves in not receiving the full benefit of the program. The world today is
pretty messed up. As far as I can see, we haven't yet exited from kaliyuga.
Global society, and government in particular, still have a lot of room for
improvement. The key to everything rests in restoring the experience of our
true nature as human beings: pure, unbounded awareness. I certainly don't feel
qualified to undertake such a massive responsibility. But Maharishi did, and
what he accomplished over 50 years was phenomenal. We can't mess with what he
set up. It's too delicate.

This "unaffiliated" group meditation...is not really wise.

FW: This "unaffiliated" group meditation at the church downtown on the
Fairfield Square advertised in the Weekly Reader is not really wise. It sends
the wrong message. Sure, the Quakers had something cool going on, but was it
pure consciousness? Was it truly Vedic science? Did it reflect true indigenous
culture? Maybe, maybe not.

But we *do* have someone who *did* reflect the deepest principles, and who did
maintain an authentic, indigenous tradition, and, moreover, provided a way for
the average human to experience these profound principles: Maharishi. Again, we
don't want to mess with it. The deepest thinkers and philosophers of history
struggled with this, and here Maharishi gave it to us in a neat, ready-to-use
package: Transcendental Meditation. This knowledge is far too important, and
too delicate. History has taught us, particularly in India, how far off-base
people can get in their misinterpretation of this experience, an experience
that is critical to the health of humanity. -

Thx, Social Activism is great.need more Quakers to eventually help the
hordes of homeless people populating our large and medium sized cities.
But not great when it degenerates into political ideologues like many living
in SF; or "Community Activists" who think they know what's best for people;
when in fact they don't have a clue.

go on mostly happens afterwards and it can be quite informing, spiritual and
inspired in the words of it. During the meeting itself the old adage regarding
speaking out during meeting is that it is okay to an extent that it may add to
the silence of the meeting.

Some number of years ago someone attended here who had come from meetings in
San Francisco. In larger times of conflict Quaker Meetings can experience an
influx of people new to the Society of Friends coming because of the social
activism that Friends have been known for. Like, for the Friends peace and
anti-war testimony. This occurred during the Gulf wars and before during the
Vietnam war. This meditator who attended SF meetings before would come to our
silent Fairfield meeting and proceed to use it as a forum to soapbox, coming in
attendance with prepared notes to speak from. This earnest attender was dealt
with kindly by an old Hicksite Quaker who came to meditating in Fairfield from
an old East coast Quaker meeting.

More to come on cultivating compassion, spirituality, and social-justice
activism..

In any event, thx Doug for the nice intro into various facets of Compassion -
a difficult topic to get a handle on due its vastness and starkly different
approaches. But the way things are shaping up especially including the
scientific evidence, ..

 Old model of reality:
   1. Meditate and "take it as it comes"
   2. No deliberate attempt to incorporate mood making, but if moods
spontaneously arise, follow (1) and the usual TM instructions.
   3. No particular attention need given to Compassion, since the practice
itself will result in many benefits that include that, along with overall
happiness and better health.

 New Model of reality.
   1. Complementary benefits of meditation along with Compassion. This can
involve TM or other forms of meditation, and
  2. Deliberate attempt to cultivate Compassion, with mood making playing a
role initially at least. After a degree of Compassion sets in, it tends to have
a self-expanding quality radiating as a subtle form of Shakti into the
environment and to all people.
  3. There need not be a particular appearance of Compassion (such as giving $
and food to the poor, helping to rebuild the devastated homes of those in need,
doing volunteer work and disaster relief.
  4. The reason for the "there need not"...in (3) may be explained by the
powerful amount of Shakti radiated by some Gurus such as Ammachi. This Shakti
may manifest in countless ways for the benefit of humanity. The mechanisms
behind such radiation may be too subtle for ordinary perception. Thus, Gurus
like Guru Dev, Aurobindo, Ramakrishna, and Ramana Maharshi on a superficial
level may not seem Compassionate, but on a more subtle level their influence
could have global implications of vast importance.

Hi Friends

We are going to continue with weekday meetings for silent meditation through
the month of November… and beyond if there continues to be interest.

At 51 North Court in Fairfield. For the rest of this month, with exception of
Thanksgiving Day, November 24th, we will gather from 5 to 6pm weekdays.

Please feel free to invite others to join us. Just let folks know that our
request is that their time there be in silence… that all practices, faiths and
teacher/lineages are welcome otherwise.

No one is going to ask to see a Dome badge or check!

meditation method as your practice is not disruptive of our own silent practice.
