Seems Yahoo! By policy guidelines of moderation is not the only internet
provider Ratcheting up troll-controls:

Huffingtonpost: I predict the same will happen here and anywhere
else where troll-controls are ratcheting up. Instead of killing
business, it will bring back those who've stayed away, unwilling to put
up with online ugliness; in fact, several people I've heard from have
made that exact point.

this action by HuffPost, as well as the moderation policies on
Facebook and other sites, are good efforts towards raising the bar.
Tweaks will surely be needed, but it's a start. Most meaningful online
discourse does not require anonymity to be rich, candid and inspiring,
but it does require a willingness to develop smart, respectful,
effective communication skills. That used to be a societal norm; it
ought to be again. I hope, like the cigarette ban, we get to the point
where we can't even remember what it was like when trollers ran the
show, just as it seems strange to remember when the table next to us
could smoke-out our dinner without consideration.

Yup, the ad hominem is right up the with pornography on Yahoo groups.
Yahoo is being ahead of the curve on this on the internet. Yahoo really

By invoking Yahoo guidelines and HuffPo's decision to
prohibit anonymous commenting, you are overlooking the
fact that unlike HuffPo commenters and many if not most
Yahoo groups, FFL is a *community with a history*, not
a bunch of strangers on the Internet, as one FFL
poster (now absent) disingenuously described it.

If you can't or won't make that distinction, you have
nothing of value to offer with regard to improving the
quality of the interactions here. Ratcheting up the
troll controls is an empty phrase where FFL is
concerned.

Ariana Huffington is a computer illiterate probably still trying to
figure out her Blackberry. A lot of the late comers to computer seem to
hate anonymity but it is as old as the hills. And so are trolls. You
must not have read the letters to the editors in newspapers back in
the day where they printed your real name. Thing is, everyone new these
curmudgeons who were always writing in to the paper and pushing their
agendas to get attention. They were the online era trolls.

Handles became popular because with 300 baud modems you didn't want to
waste bits on your full name. Nor did we want to waste bits on Dear,
so the memo form was adopted for email and online posts.

And if you have to use your real name, have you ever checked to see how
many people just in Iowa have the same name as you not to mention the
US? Last I checked there were 11 people in the Bay Area who had the
same name I have.

The sky isn't falling because the posting limits went away and I would
declare it a success. Sure the first week there were a lot of posts but
look at the trend, this week is more moderate. We don't need any
fucking posting limits! Nor do we need any block chairmen to moderate
our speech. This isn't Cuba, Buck.

Yep, the name-calling and the ad hominem certainly are

No, we missed him. The new attraction I hadn't seen before were women,
naked except for g-strings and pasties, but painted in patriotic colors.
I have to say it wasn't the most family friendly attraction. Otherwise
it was business as usual on Times Square. Tons of people, tons of
lights, and some exceptionally talented street artists.

It is a great place to visit. I used to drive a box truck into NYC when I
worked for the TMO in Livingston Manor. Quite a contrast to our monk-like

Rick, I agree that there have been more substantive discussions on a wider
range of topics that occurred with posting limits. I'm reminded of something
insightful that seraphita said a few weeks ago about maybe people weren't
responding to interesting posts but rather were saving their posts, and here I
don't remember exactly what he said but it was something like that maybe people
were saving their posts for when they felt they had to defend themselves.

Hopefully those who haven't like unlimited posting in the past will at least
lurk and see that there are some very good topics which are getting good air
time.

there have also been many
more substantive discussions on a wider range of topics than
when the posting limit was in effect. It's just been a
pleasure to be able to expand into an interesting
conversation. Nobody has been attempting to drown out
anybody, but then that was always a silly myth.

This past week we had only about 2/3 the number of posts
as the previous week (922 vs. 1372). So my prediction that
things would slow down once we got used to the new freedom
seems to have been borne out.

Perhaps, you missed it, Rick, but I made it clear in an earlier post that if
you restore the posting limits, you will need to appoint another moderator to
enforce it, i.e., keep track of overposters and shut off/restore posting

'These people's abuse of the list and community here with the Ad hominem is too
much', is an ad hominem argument itself. The way to have a spiritual and free
place is experiencing enlightenment.

I myself prefer a leaner post count, but if you muzzle people too much they
have no opportunity to grow. The only weapons here are words, ideas. No guns.
Unenlightened persons that think of themselves as individualised beings in a
larger universe have no experiential recourse but to argue on the level of
individual fault and blame because that is how they see how it works - they see
others as intentional entities with an intentional stance that are the source
of their dismay, whatever that may be.

In the wide world if one group wants to suppress another and deny them the
ability to express themselves without redress, often the only way to prevent
that is to temporarily adopt the same strategy and kill them all, like what is
happening in Egypt. The problem is if temporary becomes permanent, after the
offending group is vanquished or sufficiently suppressed. Every civilisation
has a prison population, either in special housing, or walking around; balance
of freedom versus the effort to contain is delicate if you want to maximise
freedom; there always seems to be a breakdown point where you have either
anarchy or authoritarianism and progress is lost.

The Muslim Brotherhood of Buck is not what I want. I have you in my sights, but
the gun is not loaded... yet.

Considering the way you often post, a bit at a time, re-quoting what you said
before, I would think unlimited posting would be ideal for that. But that kind
of post does not require any creative thought. Every once in a while that spark
shows up Buck, but you deny yourself the practice to express it, and instead
might as well be copying and pasting the telephone book.

Currently Rick is the master of this place, a small, thin column of text that
flows in a thousand streams.

'Why, man, he doth bestride the narrow world
Like a Colossus, and we petty men
Walk under his huge legs and peep about
To find ourselves dishonorable graves.
Men at some time are masters of their fates.
The fault, dear {Bucky}, is not in our stars
But in ourselves, that we are underlings.'

Rick, if you don't have the time to look at a significant
number of the posts to see what's been happening, make sure
you get a wide sampling of opinion. Here's mine:

As far as ad hominem is concerned, my sense is that there
has been much, much more of a friendly, communal feeling here
since the limit was lifted. The worst of the ad hominem-ers
has mostly been keeping his head down, which has reduced the
ad-hom quotient considerably, but it may go up again once
his vacation is over.

There's still a lot of frivolous posts this week, but they
really don't pose a problem; and there have also been many
more substantive discussions on a wider range of topics than
when the posting limit was in effect. It's just been a
pleasure to be able to expand into an interesting
conversation. Nobody has been attempting to drown out
anybody, but then that was always a silly myth.

This past week we had only about 2/3 the number of posts
as the previous week (922 vs. 1372). So my prediction that
things would slow down once we got used to the new freedom
seems to have been borne out.

here I implore you Rick, please save our FFL from the lowest form of
argument on FFL, the Ad hominem . These people's abuse of the list and
community here with the Ad hominem is too much. Something radical,
something different needs to be done to save FFL as a spiritual and free
  place.
  Sincerely,
  -Buck

Let's go back to 50 a week and stop the endless dross.

It's just that the forum has taken on the feel of texting at the moment. So
what? Just people talkin'. It doesn't seem either more or less confrontational,
maybe less actually.

Yes, something radical. Well should FairfieldLife [FFL] at Yahoo-groups be
improved spiritually by outlawing personal attacks between writers. Yes. You
know, like actually enforcing the new Yahoo-groups rules by moderation. If
the strong hand of a FFL moderator won't do for it, then maybe the Yahoo-Groups
management can now be called in to save us all from the abuse of the Ad hominem
hominids here.

Where can we find these new rules, Buck?
