I've seen this happen, too. In New York I worked
for a time in a very tall skyscraper, near the top
floor. Well, one day I got on the elevator going
down, and found it almost full. Those elevators
were weight sensitive, which meant that it
knew that it was full and thus didn't stop at
any of the other floors unless someone on it had
pushed a button to get off on that floor.
Well, everyone was being New Yawkers, which means
that they were standing their sullen and glum, no
one interacting with anyone else, no one saying a
thing or even looking at anyone else. This went on
until the elevator got to one of the middle floors
of the building. Then the car stopped, and one guy
got off.
The doors closed and glum silence returned. After
a few floors, a guy at the back of the elevator
said out loud, I don't know about the rest of you,
but I kind of miss him.
Everyone cracked up. Laughter just like in this
film clip. By the time we reached the ground floor,
some people had tears in their eyes from laughing
so hard. And when we got to the ground floor,
people looked around and said goodbye to these
people they had never said hello to in years of
working in that building together. Interestingly,
over the next few months, every time one of us
ran into someone who shared the same elevator
ride, we would crack up and laugh all over again.
