I'd always heard it was a name he assumed on his own, that, is it is not an honorary name. That's why some people who are wise to this fact, and do not recognize him as a "Maharishi", call him by his first name. Perhaps Mr. Varma would be better. The convention of calling him "Mahesh" seems to stem from those who do not accept the grandiose name he assumed.
