Me too. I saw Porgy and Bess on Broadway in the late 70's and loved it.

I liked what I posted below, because the spontaneity and the flash of his
talent and the fun he was having in the moment. I figured Mike might enjoy a
little riff off the Beatles classic.

In truth, I really wasn't that attuned to Prince and never really paid
attention to his music beyond what would turn up on the car radio. My loss, it
turns out.

Ditto that for me. It just wasn't something that attracted me at that time in
my life.

I spent some of last night watching him on different talk shows and listening
to more of his music; what an interesting guy. The river ran deep in him

Yes, deep river and only now, as a result of his death, delving a bit deeper
into who he was and what he could do. There is a lot there. Death does seem to
give us a bigness, a status, we didn't have before. The act of dying provides a
sort of legitimatizing effect to who we were. If Prince was special in life
than he is even more special in death.

I agree with you. I have known someone who, two weeks before dying, went to his
doctor complaining of not feeling great and he was diagnosed with bone cancer.
It was that fast.

We're all "dated", let's face it. I am a dyed-in-the-wool rock and roller and
Blues fan but here is a clip worth taking a look at. I can appreciate Prince
here because he is playing my kind of music. It is my failing, not his -

I'm not actually making a judgment call on his character or whatever he might
have been dealing with personally, whether it was opiate addiction, pain issues
or simply a bad calculation of how much of whatever MAY have killed him he
needed - if he was using. It is just that drugs are such a drudge on society,
on people, and for someone to be taken out by another case of drug overdose
pisses me off. I was never a Prince fan, his persona, his music did not appeal
to me but that doesn't mean he wasn't phenomenally gifted, creative and
boundary breaking.

In my younger days many of the local musicians on average didn't make it
past 60. There are exception like my voice teacher who lived into his
90s after teaching singers like Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell. Here's
a video of him teaching:

I agree with you. I have known someone who, two weeks before dying,
went to his doctor complaining of not feeling great and he was
diagnosed with bone cancer. It was that fast.

Never related much to Prince's output. But I did appreciate some of the cover
versions, like Sinéad O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U". This one by The
Bangles ("Manic Monday") is a good 'un . . .

BTW, below is a photo of Hoskins in his late 30s.

With all of this talk recently of faces that show their age, it is sad to bid
farewell to one that never did.

Bob Hoskins was a journeyman actor, as comfortable playing Sancho Panza in Don

Iago in Othello
as he was playing the fool in Who Killed Roger Rabbit. Even playing the most

Barry's becoming increasingly vulnerable to having his buttons pushed... And
when he gets his buttons pushed hard enough, he becomes incoherent, as he is
here.

Do you never tire of reacting mindlessly to someone suggesting that your
current appearance in photos is *not* representative of who you really are?

Are you suggesting that I'm really an ugly old woman but that the photo
makes me look pretty nice? Or that I'm really pretty nice looking but that the
photo makes me look like an ugly old woman? One way or the other, all you've
got is the photo.

When you're suffering from seriously pushed buttons, Barry, for your own good
you need to learn to read over what you've written before you post it to see
whether it makes sense. Or at least wait to write it until you're not so
rattled.

In any case, not sure what either would have to do with the fact that Bob
Hoskins, contrary to your claim, most certainly DOES show his age in the photo
you posted. No biggie; it happens to all of us. And he looks fine for his age.

To a non-biased observer,

Which non-biased observer would that be, now?

it would seem that the only thing that could resolve the issue is for you to
post a photo that shows you as being as much of a a fairly attractive a dame
as you seem to think you are. We'll wait.

Fairly nice-looking dame was my phrase. Whether you or anyone else considers
me attractive is a different question.

As to resolving the issue, you can't even state what the issue IS, your
misogynistic pea-brain has been so thoroughly fried from having your buttons
pushed umpty times in a row since you started this.

But no need to wait; the photo you want is the very one you've been stupidly
ragging on.

Meru is referring to a book that Dorothy considered
her finest, King Hereafter, which told the story of
the historical Macbeth, not the Shakespearean one.

As for scouring places for traces of characters in
Dunnett novels, I can attest to the truth of that
because I used to lead such informal tours for fellow
Dunnettophiles in Paris. Dorothy herself never wrote
about a place unless she had been there herself. In
one of her Lymond novels, there is a race across the
rooftops of Blois, France, from the summer palace of
the King down to the river. Dorothy not only researched
the history of buildings to make sure it was possible,
rumor has it that she made much of the rooftop journey
herself. Before writing about the Sultan's palace in
Istanbul, she went there, but being female was not
allowed in. The palace guards noticed her hanging
around outside and reported her to the authorities,
one of whom happened to be a big fan of her novels.
As a result she was invited inside to see the former

Great find. Dorothy was a famously nice person.
I have a good friend who, having read all of her

hoping to leave a message with someone there saying
how much one fan had appreciated her work and what
it meant to her. To my friend's surprise, Dorothy
herself answered the phone, and wound up talking
with her for over four hours.

She was famously in love with Alistair, and we fans
were concerned that when he died she'd want to go
too, just to be with him. This would have left the
second series of novels, The House Of Niccolo,
unfinished. But Dorothy hung in there, finished
the last book of the series, and then passed away
quietly.

One story I don't think she told in this interview
was about writing the first novel of the Lymond
Chronicles. Her husband Alistair supported her efforts
as a writer, but wisely didn't ask to read anything,
leaving it up to her. This *is* the editor of the
most famous news journal in Scotland, The Scotsman,
after all, so he was in rather a good position to
offer editorial advice. Finally, after a couple of
years of writing, she finished The Game Of Kings
and, with some trepidation, asked her husband to
read it. She left him that night sitting in his
favorite reading chair, just starting it.

She came down the next morning to find him still
sitting there, just having finished it, and in tears.
He looked up and said, You have written the best

I'd rather not say, because there are some here who
will leap upon them as a way of leaping upon me. But
there are a few I've mentioned in the past. For funny,
it's hard to beat Christopher Moore. For mastery,
Dorothy Dunnett.

The bottom line for me when it comes to Favorite
Writers is the same as for Favorite Movies or TV.
Repeatability. That is, do I want to read it twice,
or even more than twice? As much as I liked Nora
Ephron, she never met that criterion. The corollary
to this criterion is whether the writing in question
gets *better* with every reading. For Chris Moore,
and for Lady Dunnett, this is always true.

Probably not to the extent MMY carried on about, but
 they definitely had

I think the CIA saw pretty quickly that the TMO was

was including in the phrase our tradition, or
what kind of exercise he was referring to. It
might also be important to know what *else* he
said in this connection, to have more context for
  the quoted statement.

So it seems to me we don't really have enough
information to draw the conclusion you've just

 That could be the case.

You began by saying, Let's look at his assertion
at face value. In general, I think the critics of
MMY here rely far too much on face value. They
seem to lack the imagination to realize how
important context can be. Sometimes it can confirm
the face value, but other times it shows it in
  an entirely different light.

While I used the term face value, remember that I
 lived in programs
where every hour was programmed by MMY. Vigorous
 exercise has always
been frowned on. Statements like Asanas provide
 enough exercise were
used to guide our activity. MMY is anti weight
 training and aerobic
training, this is a known fact of his fulltime
 programs.

But now all the chickens are coming to roost. If
 MMY is right his
groups of people living under his direction should
 be the picture of
good health. We are entering the area beyond
 opinions as we see how
people age. You can't tell anything by one person,

As far as MMy goes,I think his mission is a big key
 to his longevity.
having a purpose seems to be a really important for
 a long life On
the other hand my dad is his age and is much more
 physically vigorous.
But there are so many factors in health we can only
 pick out what
makes sense and run with it. For me it includes
 weight training and
aerobics as well as stretching and balance training.
  I am hoping that
pursuing my music will give my life a focus till the
 guitar drops from
my hands. I have read that many musicians live a

cardiovascular disease he had would have
been prevented or remedied by exercise
during the time he was in Purusha.

Pray tell, Doctor Stein, are you saying that there are instances in
which exercise is NOT a good thing?

I was going to make a similar comment. I’m no medical expert, but I can’t
imagine a cardiologist telling anyone that exercise wouldn’t benefit them,
unless they were so ill that the slightest exertion might kill them. I’ve
seen people in their 90’s who had gotten proper exercise all their lives and
could still run, ski, etc. Maharishi, who has been sedentary, has been bound
to a wheelchair for several years. If non-exercise is part of his tradition,
 then the tradition is deficient.
When I was on TTC and the Sidhis program we had walks every day either
after or before lunch and it was recommended. Maybe running or heavy
exercise might not be good for someone rounding because of the shock to
the system. But walking should be okay. Plus using an Indian diet for
westerners is not a good idea either. MMY started out saying eat what
your mother puts before you. That was a subtle way of saying what your
ancestors ate is probably the best diet for you or modified if you moved
to a new location. Of course if your ancestors ate a bad diet and
keeled over in their 40's it might not be such a good idea too and needs
some advice or modification.

Your body changes and adapts (acclimatizes) to your environment. My
guru returned early from his last India trip and when I asked why he
said too hot! So in about 10 years time he had become so acclimatized
to the California climate that India was now too hot. I also have
another Indian restaurateur friend who told me he gets sick now when he
visits India.

I've also wondered if so many who have had health problems and died
early in the movement were even following advice from even MAPI
practitioners? I've known people when recommended to at least eat eggs
for breakfast didn't want to and stuck to an yogic diet of Indian food
stuff not necessarily that good for westerners. We're all individuals
and need to find what works for you and keep in mind the body will
change too.

Now he’s probably a junkie or a gigolo. Strainers eventually snap.

Michael Yankaus didn’t snap. He mellowed. He’s still in the movement, but is
very easy-going and open-minded. A genuinely nice guy.

The appropriate dharma for these bodies is to exercise

loves heavy levels of exercise and sweat.

He was a jolly guy who I hadn't thought of in years. RIP indeed Scotty.

The irony is that he died of cardiovascular disease, yet recently Maharishi
told Purusha they shouldn’t exercise because “Exercise isn’t part of our
tradition.”

That would be ironic only if the type of
cardiovascular disease he had would have
been prevented or remedied by exercise
during the time he was in Purusha.

No, that's a piece of cake! But I think the paradox is
one that is found with MMY and other gurus too. We see
and experience one side of them, but there can be
another side too that is rather disturbing to our
understanding of Realization. I don't think one
negates the other. I'm sure SC was the catalyst for
many people having deep authentic spiritual
experiences. And I'm also sure his sexual behavior is
true also. Go figure.
