I've tried a lot of things, from wodim, to braser, to k3b and havent got
more that 15% of dvds burnt properly. Outa 5, only 1 burns properly.

I don't know about wodim, but here are some tips to narrow down the problem:

 a. Check that the ISO file you are trying to burn isn't corrupt. Quick way
 would
 be to mount it:
  $ mount -o loop -t iso9006 Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso /mnt
  $ ls /mnt

...if that works, do a shasum check:
  http://fedoraproject.org/en/verify

Checked.. twice, thrice.. :(

 b. If the ISO file is ok, try another tool like k3b or brasero (in fact, if I
 am
not mistaken, with an ISO file even a dd should work fine -- i remember doing
 that a couple of times)

tried both brasero and k3b.. no difference.. just more additions to my
waste dvd pile..

 c. If writing still fails, I'd suspect the media. Try blank media from a
different set /brand -- sometimes one just gets unlucky with bad quality
 media.

I've tried both sony and moserbaer (the only ones you get here) .. its
too much of a coincidence if all the dvds i purchase end up bad :(

 d. If all else fails report back here or on fedora-list.

I've even tried a USB writer (which i purchased in case my laptop writer
was broken). However, same results. The USB writer gets offlined as
dmesg says. This is followed by rejecting IO to dead device ( i
checked and /dev/sr1 no longer exists). Another wasted dvd.

These are the logs from the latest failed burns:

http://ankursinha.fedorapeople.org/temp.txt

http://ankursinha.fedorapeople.org/brasero-session.log

I used brasero this time. I can try more dvds with k3b and wodim and
post results if you want, if that'll help set it right. FYI, dvds burn
perfect on my vista (i use a dual boot), which saddens me further :(.

Hmm, just curious did you try booting with this DVD ? Fixating a disk only means
closing it off (I think it implies zeroing all remaining space on the disk). So,
it *might* be possible that all relevant data has been written and the DVD is
usable. I am just guessing here though.

Another thought that occurred to me is that it is also possible that you need a
firmware update for your drive. No kidding ! :).

I've seen at least 3 instances of laptops that needed firmware updates for DVDs
to work correctly. 2 dell model (D610 and D620) and my own lenovo Y410 (although
when i purchased it the update was already applied).

http://tinyurl.com/ybsouoe [Dell D610 update]
http://tinyurl.com/ya8jjjo [Dell D620 update]
http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_892.html

I don't have any thoughts about your external sony writer tho'.

I'd recommend that you check if firmware updates are available for your system,
and apply them and if that does work or there aren't any, i'd recommend that you
submit a bugzilla report describing your problem.

hi,

Checked up on the product page[1]
No firmware updates for the drive.

What component should I file a bug against (kernel?)? Separate bugs for
the inbuilt and the USB drives?

Guess I'll have to boot into windows to burn *fedora* media till then.

@Steve thank you for all your help.

I'd say start at application level first. File against one application and
mention in your BZ that the problem is not app. specific. Let the developer make
the call to escalate to the kernel. The kernel guys hate it when people just
assume it is the kernel's fault without solid proof. By pointing out that is
works on windows will make them even more angry :). In your case it looks like a
kernel fault, but in many cases, it just happens that all userspace application
eventually go through some userspace library which is at fault rather than the
kernel. (For example bluetooth, usb devices which go through libusb etc)

Well, not necessarily. You do know that you can do installs from media on HDD
too right ?[1]

http://docs.fedoraproject.org/fedora-install-guide-en/fc4/sn-installing-from-harddrive.html

Just copy the iso's to your windows partition (assuming it is FAT /not/ ntfs --
dunno the current status, but last i checked install from HDD supported only
ext[23] and fat)

@Steve thank you for all your help.

No probs.

This one worked. Only for the laptop writer though.

For the USB, it said :

I think installing growisofs set-root-uid as the man page says should
work.. I'll try that.

Interesting to know growisofs worked but wodim didn't. I'd suggest you trace
down the problem and/or file a bug against wodim and other apps that failed. So
that they are able to handle whatever the problem was in the manner growisofs
does or failing that, error out in a meaningful manner which would point to the
source of the problem.

As for the second error also file a bug against growisofs or debug it further
and file a bug against the right component (most likely would turn out to be a
problem with HAL or udev).

I'd suggest getting a re-writeable CD/DVD media tho' :)

cheers,

PS: Please *do* file a bug even if you aren't that much into debugging. Lack of
bugs is what causes others to comment -- it works on windows but doesn't on linux.

its because the ACL of my USB drive does not contain Ankur as user

laptop drive:

[an...@ankur ~]$ getfacl /dev/sr0
getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names
# file: dev/sr0
# owner: root

# file: dev/sr1
# owner: root
# group: cdrom

Dont really think its a bug. Ill confirm with what the man page has to

The minimum legwork is to read on the two mentioned points.
The reading will not hit your allowances I hope. :)
Reading, obviously you have to do for yourself for sure ;)

Do a simple test - login as a regular user (non - root user)
and insert a USB stick / drive, does it mount automatically ?

If it does, great, or if you need to fix that, the same two points
have to be dealt with, while dealing with the same, I am sure
your eyes will see / spot the path / reason.

The reason to know why to take a specific path, is to reach a
desired destination. The doubt is (if any implied), if it is
the right or wrong path.
Well, you need to walk at least a few steps to find it yourself.

Others can only indicate the various paths to nirvana the
reason for nirvana is same, but path to nirvana differs for
person to person.
