Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi - feline Luk positive

2008-07-15 Thread catatonya
You will get lots of advice here. How old is your other cat? Odds are that if
your other cat didn't contract felv from kiwi from the time they were together
he won't ever contract it. There is always a small risk. But I have mixed at
least 13 negative cats with up to two positive cats over a period of over 10
years and have never had the disease pass from the positive cats to one of the
negative cats.

no. At that point she was and kind of still is a very healthy happy one year
old who loves to wrestle with our cocker and would love to play with my
daughter's Japanese Bob Tail Cat, but unfortunately we have to keep them
separate. The Japanese Bob Tail Cat has been immunized against Feline Luk, but
we have also heard that the shot does not offer 100%
protection. It's sad because they use to love to play together. We were hoping
that in a few months kiwi would come back negative, but he came back positive

with loose bowels. He is also a bit on the thin side. I don't have the money to
take him to the vets and we have tried to find him a rescue and or foster home,
but right now it doesn't seem like any are available. One thing positive is
that we were able to find an organization to neuter him. Now he doesn't spray.
Thank God! He is funny sometimes. Some times he gets one of his claws caught in
things like curtains, and cat toys. He was trying to catch a fly one day by our

worry about him swallowing it and it getting stuck in his intestines causing a
blockage. He also loves laser pointers. She loves chasing the dot on the floor

I've been off this list since the server problem. I am so shocked and

I am so sorry.

That time may be long or short, as it may be with any of us. Dixie
Louise Doodle Katt, JP enjoyed and I treasure three years with me.
She had everything a little cat could want with the possible exception
of mice to hunt. She had the best regular and holistic care from the
day we found out she was FeLV+. She left this world suddenly after an
infection that left her anemic. She was fine one day then two days
later we were making a Code Three run to her vets 21/2 hours away.
She left this world the next night, riding in the Jeep that took her
on many adventures and with me by her side. I am sure she felt safe
and loved. I would not trade one second with this wonderful little
grey cat for all the pain I have felt since she left. Treasure your
time. Give your friend the best you can and create a wonderful life
for him and wonderful memories for yourself.

Others on this list can make recommendations for care. Dixie had both
regular and holistic care. Luckily I could/would afford this for her
even if other things had to go. And, just as luckily, she loved to
travel so getting her this care was very possible. There are a lot of
supplements available. Listen to those on this list. Feed him the
best possible diet.I really liked Primal Raw and no grain foods.
Try to reduce the stress in your friend's life. Dixie had to tolerate
living in a home that was being constructed and reconstructed but
 seemed to adapt wonderfully.

Love your little friend with all your heart and let him love you with
 his.

Good luck and blessings to you.

I am so sorry to have to write this. We lost our sweet little Smokey cat. When
I took him to my vet before we left on vacation she told us that the sores in
his mouth were caused from the virus and that he was suffering. She said? there
wasn't anything that could be done. I just couldn't believe it because I
really?thought he was doing so much better and that the sores were from herpes,
which I explained to her. She said no, sometimes these sores are caused from
the decease and that he was in great pain. Every time I think about the times
that I?cleaned his little mouth it breaks my heart because I now know how much
I was hurting him. I was as gentle as I could be but I thought I needed to keep
the sores doctored and?I really didn't realize how much pain he was in. Stupid
me, I thought I was helping him and that he was getting better.

After some time goes by, I plan on going to a rescue facility and adopting a
cat. I will try to get a little cat that has been passed by, maybe a little
older one, I don't really know, I figure I will know when I see him/her. Thank
you for all the information and support. You all were a great source of
information and support.

Sincerely,

Kathryn, you can buy it as a pill from a drug store and maybe in a capsule.? I
started with 500 mg caplets and they were tough to crush.? I ended up buying
the powder from iHerbs.

Much easier to work with.? I dissolve it in a little water, mix with food and
feed it to mine.

It occurred to me last night that I did not take the time to properly say my

animal leaves us and my thoughts are sincerely with their owners. I've been
kind of?preoccupied with Smokey. I really understand how these guys can effect
you, I think it's because they are so innocent and, like Smokey, are so

he's not feeling great.

I will be gone for six days on a previously planned vacation, (bad timing, I
know). However, he will be staying with my vet, I'm really hoping that she can
get his ulcers cleared up. I absolutely will get him on lysine. Just one more
question?if you all don't mind:?Do I get it in liquid form or is it a powder?

I'll email when I return to give an update. Can you send pictures on this site?
If so and if it's appropriate, I can send a picture of Smokey.

Thanks, again,

Kathryn, I am so sorry about Smokey. I know how much you wanted him to
make it. Don't reproach yourself too much (I know you have to a little,
20-20 hindsight is what we humans do best) for causing him pain trying
to take care of the mouth sores. You were doing what you could to be a
good mom, and we often have to do things they don't like for their own
good. Gentlest of Bridge vibes to Smokey. I know he knows how much you
loved him, and maybe he will guide you to another kitty who needs you.
Brava for wanting to find one who's been passed by, I always worry about

Other numbers that were noted as high were:

we have put him on the new science diet kd canned (it has a better

eat.) 100 mL of fluid per week.

and yes, he has high blood pressure and we have him on norvasc 2.5 mg daily

plus the vet has recommended cosequin for joints and said it actually helps
the kidneys (i can't read the dosage it's written so small on the capsules and
i can't find the box. i have a hard time getting them down him though so he
doesn't take them with much regularity.)

how does all of this sound to you.

I need to put lysine in the wet food for sneaker's herpes. the vet said this
would not hurt bob's kidneys. what do you think about that?

Kathryn, you can buy it as a pill from a drug store and maybe in a

up buying the powder from iHerbs.

It occurred to me last night that I did not take the time to properly say my
condolences for the lost kittys such as Melina. It saddens me whenever a little
animal leaves us and my thoughts are sincerely with their owners. I've been
kind of preoccupied with Smokey. I really understand how these guys can effect
you, I think it's because they are so innocent and, like Smokey, are so
trusting. Every time I go to pet him, which is a lot, he purrs, even though
he's not feeling great.

I will be gone for six days on a previously planned vacation, (bad timing, I
know). However, he will be staying with my vet, I'm really hoping that she can
get his ulcers cleared up. I absolutely will get him on lysine. Just one more
question if you all don't mind: Do I get it in liquid form or is it a powder?

I'll email when I return to give an update. Can you send pictures on this site?
If so and if it's appropriate, I can send a picture of Smokey.

Thanks, again,
Kathryn

Thanks. She had the best of everything and was very happy and loved.
I miss her so much. Right now I am looking at a little 4 week old (?)
copper kitten that came from the same pine thicket Dixie came from.
After a day of talking, assuring and reassuring her, she allowed me to
snatch her up and bring her to the farm. Before you think me awful
for taking one so young you need to know there are 5 hawks in the
thicket and she would not have survived very long. I think her mother
knew that and sent her meowing toward my mother's home. She will be
loved and cared for all of her days. This little one was born about
the time Dixie was leaving and is a favorite color of Dixie's. This
makes things easier.

Kathryn, I am so sorry about Smokey.  I know how much you wanted him to make

hindsight is  what we humans do best) for causing him pain trying to take care
of the mouth sores.  You were doing what you could to be a good mom, and we
often have to do things they don't like for their own good.  Gentlest of Bridge

Hey Belinda,

This has been lost in cyberspace several times.  I'm hoping it comes through

Bob's numbers:

creatnine 2.5

phosphorus 4.5
potassium 4.1
HCT 37.9

Other numbers that were noted as high were:

urea nitrogen 40
cholesterol 269
amylase 1440

we have put him on the new science diet kd canned (it has a better consistency
and it is the only one out of about 4 we've tried that he will eat.) 100 mL of
fluid per week.

and yes, he has high blood pressure and we have him on norvasc 2.5 mg daily

plus the vet has recommended cosequin for joints and said it actually helps the
kidneys (i can't read the dosage it's written so small on the capsules and i
can't find the box.  i have a hard time getting them down him though so he
doesn't take them with much regularity.)

how does all of this sound to you.

I need to put lysine in the wet food for sneaker's herpes. the vet said this
would not hurt bob's kidneys. what do you think about that?

Hi all,
Sorry I haven't posted much these days.
I've been busy as hell in rescue.
Cats/kittens are coming out of the woodwork!

The fact my mother is dying as well. Doctors are only giving her 1-3 months
to live.
She is still young (66 will be 67 on August 2nd)
If she hangs on we will be throwing a B-B-Q Birthday for her.
She had us kids when she was young and still got her education as she
promised my grandparents. My parents were in the military and retired Lab/Dog

We traveled the world as youngsters as well.
I'm 50 years old.

I wanted to let those of you know I'm so sorry to hear of your precious
kitties that have went to the bridge. The day will come when you will be
together
again.

For you new members this is the best group of people to get support and

They have helped me with my FELV kitties and Non-FELV kitties.
Thank you to those that have decided to let their kitties live regardless of
what their Vets have said.
I have to tell you I have mix both Felv/Non-Felv kitties in my home.
Nobody that was negative has died from FELV.
They died of old age or other illnesses.
I do get their vaccinations when needed.
There are some that do separate the Felvs from the Non-Felvs on this group.

Anyway enjoy your kitties.

Re: [Felvtalk] crf-Belinda

2008-07-15 Thread Beth Noren
Hi Tonya,
Sounds like Bob is having problems very similar to what we are now going
through with Will Feral. He began spraying a few weeks ago, blood has been
in the urine off and on. X-ray was clear, urinalysis had no crystals, good
ph, no blockage. Dx was interstitial cystitis. He did 2 weeks of
Clavamox with no improvement. He is now on a glucosamine/chondroitin drug
made for cats. It's called Dasuquin, it also has avacado/soybean
unsaponifables added to it, probably just something to make it unique and
patentable and doubly expensive. I mix 2 capsules with a tablespoon of
Fancy Feast every morning and he scarfs it down. Didn't seem to be helping
so the vet has added 1 more drug, Elavil (Amitriptyline) 5mg per day by pill
popper. It is an anti-depressant but is also supposed to have
anti-inflammatory properties. 4 days into it he still had bloody urine,
we're at 1 week now, haven't seen any puddles in a couple of days, but he
may just be hiding his squatting better. He's still playing fetch with his
mouse and eating well. We haven't done the prescription food yet as it is
difficult to feed it to just one of 5. I have decreased the amount of dry
food they all get and have increased the wet. I also read some good tips
somewhere (maybe I got the link here?) on getting them to drink more water.
I now leave a bowl on the end table by the couch where he always tries to
steal sips from my glass. They all love drinking at that spot now. I put
the L-lysine into this water. Here are Will's blood values for comparison:
Creatnine - 2.1(0.8-2.4) *HIGH NORMAL
Bun - 35 (16-36) *HIGH NORMAL
Na - 162 mmol/L (150-165)
K - 4 mmol/L (3.5-5.8)
Cl - 120 mmol/L (112-129)
HCT - 37.4 (30-45)

I'll holler if the Elavil, (or anything else) seems to work.

Kind regards,
Beth, Blue, Moxie. Dash, Scooter, and Will Feral

2008-07-15 Thread Beth Noren
Hi Terrie,
I am so sorry to hear what you are going through with your mom. Just as a
little bit of hope, my dad is the same age as your mom and his doctor gave
him 1 month to 1 year to live over 2 and a half years ago. We thought it
was really the end just before last Christmas, he couldn't walk to the
bathroom without passing out, was shivering all the time and sleeping all
day. His doctors acted like this was just the inevitable progression of his
disease. Turns out it was his meds. They finally let him lower his
blood-pressure medication and he woke up, started eating healthy, exercising
a tiny bit, and is enjoying his life again. His condition is still
ultimately fatal, but this reprieve has been wonderful.

Hoping she has many barbeques to come...
Hugs,
Beth

Re: [Felvtalk] crf-Belinda

2008-07-15 Thread Belinda Sauro

   Hi Tonya,
Lysine as far as I know isn't going to hurt his kidney's, never heard
that Cosquin helps them, Fred gets this for his arthritis too. He gets
the pink and white capsules, my vet said I could go with 1 or 2 a day
depending on how Fred's arthritis seemed to be. He currently get 1
because he gets so much stuff now already, that seems to be enough for
him. They really need to be given everyday though, they take up to 6
weeks to make a difference. I've never seen a BUN that low if it is
correct, *what are his liver values like*?

* Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) - Urea, which is normally excreted by
the kidney, is a by-product of protein metabolism.

   1. High levels of BUN may be the result of a high protein diet,
dehydration, ulcers in the digestive tract, kidney disease,
or blockage of the normal flow of urine (from a crystal or
  mucus plug, for example).
   2. Low BUN levels can result from a low protein diet or liver
  disease.

I wouldn't worry so much about the low protein diet, my vet said she
didn't get them on that until the end stages when they were a lot worse
than Bob is, Fred doesn't eat that stuff and he does fine. He eats
Fancy Feast, home cooked or baby food with supplements. He has been CRF
for over 2 years now and his last blood work like I said was really
good, almost normal. Mainly you want to keep the phosphorus under 6,
mid 4's if good and the potassium solidly in the mid to high 4's. Low
potassium can cause back leg muscle weakness and isn't good for the
heart. I agree that 100cc of fluid a week is not going to do much
good. If Bob is dehydrated I would give him between 50 and 100cc a day,
if he isn't he doesn't need any fluids. Fred even when his numbers are
low is dehydrated and needs 100cc a day.

Fred has lost pretty much all the muscle in both back legs now, he still
gets around OK just can't use them to scratch or anything else. He is
starting to lose a bit of weight so I have to really keep on him to eat,
he is getting lazy and if the food is not right there in front of him he
will go without, so I have to remember to make sure he has food wherever
he is laying.

It's almost time for more blood work, kind of afraid of what it is going
to say though, it was really good last time, so I hope it is still good.

the kidneys (i can't read the dosage it's written so small on the capsules and
i can't find the box. i have a hard time getting them down him though so he
doesn't take them with much regularity.)

Thanks Beth,

Bob has always had problems with his kidneys/bladder. He had surgery for
bladder stones at a young age. He tested positive for felv when he was young
and then later tested negative. He has constantly had blood in his urine, has
had bladder, kidney infections, etc.. his entire life. He's around 15 now.
He's my old buddy. We have ALL (up to 15 at times) had to eat prescription
diets since Bob had bladderstones. lol. We were all on Royal Canin S/O, but
we've recently switched to science diet kd canned and dry (mostly canned).

Beth Noren [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
  Hi Tonya,
Sounds like Bob is having problems very similar to what we are now going
through with Will Feral. He began spraying a few weeks ago, blood has been in
the urine off and on. X-ray was clear, urinalysis had no crystals, good ph, no
blockage. Dx was interstitial cystitis. He did 2 weeks of Clavamox with no
improvement. He is now on a glucosamine/chondroitin drug made for cats. It's
called Dasuquin, it also has avacado/soybean unsaponifables added to it,
probably just something to make it unique and patentable and doubly expensive.
I mix 2 capsules with a tablespoon of Fancy Feast every morning and he scarfs
it down. Didn't seem to be helping so the vet has added 1 more drug, Elavil
(Amitriptyline) 5mg per day by pill popper. It is an anti-depressant but is
also supposed to have anti-inflammatory properties. 4 days into it he still
had bloody urine, we're at 1 week now, haven't seen any puddles in a couple of
days, but he may just be hiding his squatting better.
He's still playing fetch with his mouse and eating well. We haven't done the
prescription food yet as it is difficult to feed it to just one of 5. I have
decreased the amount of dry food they all get and have increased the wet. I
also read some good tips somewhere (maybe I got the link here?) on getting them
to drink more water. I now leave a bowl on the end table by the couch where he
always tries to steal sips from my glass. They all love drinking at that spot
now. I put the L-lysine into this water. Here are Will's blood values for
comparison:
  Creatnine - 2.1(0.8-2.4) *HIGH NORMAL
  Bun - 35 (16-36) *HIGH NORMAL
  Na - 162 mmol/L (150-165)
  K - 4 mmol/L (3.5-5.8)
  Cl - 120 mmol/L (112-129)
  HCT - 37.4 (30-45)

I'll holler if the Elavil, (or anything else) seems to work.

  Kind regards,
Beth, Blue, Moxie. Dash, Scooter, and Will Feral

I think the cosequin is supposed to help with phosphorous or potassium or
something like that. Mine are pink and white too. I dont know what the liver
values are, but I listed everything that was out of range. Bob is eating well
and his weight is fine, but he HATES getting fluids. He will take his norvasc
in a pill pocket but he hates taking the cosequin because it's too big for one
of those and I have to pill him.

I checked out the crf site Beth sent and I'm going to look at methods of
giving fluids and see if I can't figure out a better way to give them that will
work. I normally can barely get 50 in him at a time, and quite frankly have
given up on them until I felt like he really needed them to get by. :(

Belinda Sauro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
  Hi Tonya,
Lysine as far as I know isn't going to hurt his kidney's, never heard that
Cosquin helps them, Fred gets this for his arthritis too. He gets the pink and
white capsules, my vet said I could go with 1 or 2 a day depending on how
Fred's arthritis seemed to be. He currently get 1 because he gets so much
stuff now already, that seems to be enough for him. They really need to be
given everyday though, they take up to 6 weeks to make a difference. I've
never seen a BUN that low if it is correct, what are his liver values like?

Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) - Urea, which is normally excreted by the kidney,
is a by-product of protein metabolism.

High levels of BUN may be the result of a high protein diet, dehydration,
ulcers in the digestive tract, kidney disease, or blockage of the normal flow
of urine (from a crystal or mucus plug, for example).
Low BUN levels can result from a low protein diet or liver disease.
I wouldn't worry so much about the low protein diet, my vet said she didn't get
them on that until the end stages when they were a lot worse than Bob is, Fred
doesn't eat that stuff and he does fine. He eats Fancy Feast, home cooked or
baby food with supplements. He has been CRF for over 2 years now and his last
blood work like I said was really good, almost normal. Mainly you want to keep
the phosphorus under 6, mid 4's if good and the potassium solidly in the mid to
high 4's. Low potassium can cause back leg muscle weakness and isn't good for
the heart. I agree that 100cc of fluid a week is not going to do much good.
If Bob is dehydrated I would give him between 50 and 100cc a day, if he isn't
he doesn't need any fluids. Fred even when his numbers are low is dehydrated
and needs 100cc a day.

Fred has lost pretty much all the muscle in both back legs now, he still gets
around OK just can't use them to scratch or anything else. He is starting to
lose a bit of weight so I have to really keep on him to eat, he is getting lazy
and if the food is not right there in front of him he will go without, so I
have to remember to make sure he has food wherever he is laying.

It's almost time for more blood work, kind of afraid of what it is going to say
though, it was really good last time, so I hope it is still good.

I am so sorry to have to write this. We lost our sweet little Smokey cat.
When I took him to my vet before we left on vacation she told us that the sores
in his mouth were caused from the virus and that he was suffering. She said
there wasn't anything that could be done. I just couldn't believe it because I
really thought he was doing so much better and that the sores were from herpes,
which I explained to her. She said no, sometimes these sores are caused from
the decease and that he was in great pain. Every time I think about the times
that I cleaned his little mouth it breaks my heart because I now know how much
I was hurting him. I was as gentle as I could be but I thought I needed to keep
the sores doctored and I really didn't realize how much pain he was in. Stupid
me, I thought I was helping him and that he was getting better.

After some time goes by, I plan on going to a rescue facility and adopting a
cat. I will try to get a little cat that has been passed by, maybe a little
older one, I don't really know, I figure I will know when I see him/her. Thank
you for all the information and support. You all were a great source of
information and support.

  Sincerely,
  Kathryn

Kathryn, you can buy it as a pill from a drug store and maybe in a

It occurred to me last night that I did not take the time to properly
say my condolences for the lost kittys such as Melina. It saddens me whenever a
little animal leaves us and my thoughts are sincerely with their owners. I've
been kind of preoccupied with Smokey. I really understand how these guys can
effect you, I think it's because they are so innocent and, like Smokey, are so
trusting. Every time I go to pet him, which is a lot, he purrs, even though
he's not feeling great.

I will be gone for six days on a previously planned vacation, (bad
timing, I know). However, he will be staying with my vet, I'm really hoping
that she can get his ulcers cleared up. I absolutely will get him on lysine.
Just one more question if you all don't mind: Do I get it in liquid form or is
it a powder?

I'll email when I return to give an update. Can you send pictures on
this site? If so and if it's appropriate, I can send a picture of Smokey.

  Thanks, again,
  Kathryn
