Re: [Felvtalk] while we await a retest

2008-07-24 Thread Beth Noren
Sharyl,
Don't give up hope that some are negative. Ours initially tested 4
negative, 1 pos. One of the negs was incubating the virus and tested
positive some weeks later, but the other three
were still negative 6 months later. Their feral momma tested Elisa
negative (didn't do IFA on her) and she is still running around. We
vaccinate, and will only retest if a neg. gets sick...

Good luck,
Beth

Hi, I posted the other day about my 4 13 week old foster kittens who tested
positive for FeLV. While we wait out re-testing them, is there anything
that can be done in hopes of boosting their immune system and fighting off
the virus? I am using Pet Tinic liquid vitamins twice a day and
lactoferrin/colostrum supplement in their wet food twice a day..anything
 else we should be doing?

Hello everyone,

I apologize in advance for making this message longer
than I'd first thought...

Now that our list appears to be back up and running
properly, I think it's time to send out a gentle reminder
about netiquette and what this list's mission is.

First, remember that this list is for discussions of feline
leukemia, related treatments and support for those who
are dealing with this dreaded disease. We do, however,
allow a bit of off-topic discussion because of the close-knit
nature of this group of wonderful people. If you do plan to
post something that is off-topic (but, hopefully, somehow
related to FeLV and/or list members), remember to put 'OT'
(without the quotes) at the beginning of the subject line.

Next, remember to properly edit your emails to this list.
Lately, folks have been posting messages that contain the
complete text of the entire thread to which they are
responding. This is causing problems with both the digest
mode and email size limits for this list. So, please edit your
messages to contain only the relevant text of previous
emails. If you need assistance with this, please contact
me privately, and I'll try to explain it further.

Also, attachments are NOT allowed. That means, do not
attach pictures, pdf files, Word document files, Excel files,
etc. I will not forward such messages to the list.

Lastly, due to the nature of this disease and its effects on
our furry friends, there is a potential for passionate
debates every now and then. While this may be healthy in
a general sense, please try to observe the following rules:

No flaming- ie; no personal attacks, hostile language,
personal threats, etc.,

No posting messages that proclaim a, my way or the
highway type of rhetoric. We are a diverse group of
people with varying opinions on which treatment options
work best for our loved ones. Some here believe that
certain treatment options are not viable (or are simply
hokum) while others swear by a particular treatment. Some
here believe in mixing positives and negatives while others
say that it shouldn't happen at all. Even if you adamantly
disagree with another list member's point of view, please
be respectful and sensitive to their right to their opinions.
Members are free to share their opinions, but they are not
permitted to badger others into submission.

It is my hope that this message will serve as a general
guideline to posting to FeLVTalk. If I've forgotten
something, or if you disagree with the content of this note,
please contact me PRIVATELY to discuss it further.
Please do not try to create a controversy on the list about
all of this. Thank you. Best wishes to all.

Re: [Felvtalk] while we await a retest

2008-07-24 Thread MaryChristine
yeah, probably the most important thing we've learned about FeLV is how much
we still don't know--and with colony cats there's mounting evidence that
mixed litters might be explained more by mutual grooming by positive aunties
than by moms themselves--no longer is transplacental transmission the prime
suspect, nor passage through the birtch canal. and if mom was positive
from an exposure late enough in her pregnancy, after the placental barrier
was well established, well, that could/should/might (remember, we just don't
KNOW enough) have protected them, too!

that old cliche, where there's life, there's hope--FeLV might well be the
best place to apply it..

FeLV isn't a death sentence it's just a 4-letter word.

and it is SO good to see you back, beth! i keep trying to grab you on IM but
miss..

2008-07-24 Thread Marylyn
Check with Alley Cat Advocates or any TNR group in your area.
Consider them a feral colony. They will help you. Live trapping is
easy. Just remember to be very careful. A feral bit my finger and
broke it.and, two surgeries later, it is doing fine. Luckily I
had good insurance. And still had possession of the cat so she could
be spayed and quarantined for the appropriate amount of time. If your
cats really want to be outside, put up a dog kennel so they can go
thru the pet door into the kennel. It is great. With farmland, you
probably have fox and coyote. They will kill a cat in a heart beat.
My Mom has ferals (people dump them in the strip mall behind her
property) and she has to be concerned about the hawks. I just got a
very small kitten from the pine thicket. She is in the bedroom now,
napping. All of this is to say, be careful with your own cats. I did
not realize all the dangers when I moved to the farm. I had hoped to
have lots of cared for outside cats. That probably won't happen. Help
the ferals you can. Mom has had a couple of dozen spayed/neutered and
released. Some stay, some go. It is very hard when they go and all
you can do is hope they found a good place to live. ACA has a good
website with lots of information re caring for ferals.

I am very sorry Trixter left this world. I just lost Dixie Louise.
She made my life so much better though. I would not have missed one
second of the time we had together. Not a nano second.

Good luck.

younger cats can catch a cold so easily, and lysine helps with that.

[Felvtalk] like seeing a ghost

2008-07-24 Thread Lynne
Most of you know about my experience with BooBoo, the Felv positive who died
after owning him for only a month. It was without a doubt the most tragic
thing I have ever been through in my life.. Not long after that we got a
rescued persian Snowball who was neglected and in foster care for 4 months
because she was so ill. She has feline herpes virus, not active and is
absolutely thriving now.

Tonight my husband calls me out to the front yard, and who is sitting there?
BooBoo's son. I don't know if he is Felv positive or not. Just as BooBoo was,
he has sores on his head, matted fur, dirty ears and most likely fleas. I feel
like I'm experiencing our tragedy all over again. If I knew he was not
positive, I would take him inside right now and those despicable people would
never see him again. Odd how he has chosen our house to hang around. The
owners were warned about taking care of their cats and I know all I have to do
is call this field worker at the humane society and he will come and pick him
up. I just don't know what to do. I could never subject Snowball to any harm,
not after what she went through prior to living with us but I don't want to see
this little guy suffer either. If this kitty is Felv positive, perhaps a
rescue would take him. I simply could not afford the emotional and financial
devestation we experienced watching BooBoo die. I'm totally confused right now.

I simply could not afford the emotional and financial
devestation we
experienced watching BooBoo die.  I'm totally confused right now.

Re: [Felvtalk] like seeing a ghost

2008-07-24 Thread Lynne
My husband and I have agreed that if he continues to hang around here for a bit
longer my husband is going to put him in the back porch and call this guy we
know who investigated the owner after we lost Boo. He has no sympathy for them
whatsoever and would take the cat away. If he tests negative for Felv I will
adopt him if that is an option. He has been neutered, something they had
refused to do with Boo and with their female so maybe the field worker did
impress them somewhat. Whether he has been vaccinated is another story. I
could not subject Snowy to him if he were positive as much as I would love to
have him. He isn't the sweetest of cats, the little buggar was rubbing his
face all over mine then bit me on the hand, quite nastily I might add. He
isn't as pretty as BooBoo but still is pretty darn cute.

Hi Julie,
Good luck with the retest.  I am not sure if anyone mentioned this or not, but
the kittens should be retested I think after a certain age, because they can
carry their mother's FeLV antibodies for a certain time and test positive even
though they may actually test negative at a later date.  I am thinking four
months, but not sure on that.  Someone here will know that specifically.
I swear by lysine for humans and animals (is there a difference?  lol); it's an

Hi Lynne,
There is a reason you're seeing this little fellow, and I'm sure it's to help.
But give yourself a little time to breath and make the decision on how to
handle the situation, especially considering what you went through with

Hi Sharon,
When my grandmother was feeding a feral colony in NC (I live in TX), I called
Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, a group I donate to, and they called one
of their sister groups in NC.  The rescue came out, trapped all of them,
spayed/neutered, and then released them back to my grandmother.  It was
wonderful to see.  That was about five years ago.  My grandma died a year ago
in July '07, and I trapped the only remaining feral, named her Ensie (for NC),
and brought her back to TX.  She let me pet her the night we arrived home
(after 5 years of not letting me touch her) and she's been wonderful ever
since.  I hope you are able to find a good rescue group that will help you
out.  You might also consider seeing if you're local vet will help you out in
case the rescues don't come through.
I'm sorry to hear about your sweet Trixster.  That must have been very hard.

Hi All,
I am new to Felv and just lost my Trixter to this awful Disease. I want to
thank all of you for the information I have been reading from you all.
I have many ferals around my house because of the 3 fields that surround me. I
have talked to the farmer but he is not interested in trying to help me help
his cats. I have had to close up my cat door to protect my other 3.

I dont know anything about rounding them up and would hate to catch them just
to be put to death. Any suggestions.

Subject: [Felvtalk] ADMIN: Gentle reminder about netiquette

Thank you. Best wishes to all.

no, wendy, they do NOT carry the mother's antibodies. that is FIV--and the
FeLV test doesn't test for antibodies anyway, it tests for antigens. PLEASE
check before you send things out to the list.

as for lysine, it is specific for the various forms of HERPES viruses, not
all those that cause respiratory symptoms. it causes the herpes virus not to
replicate, it does not boost the immune system per se, and it has no known
effect to date on any other virii. this is not news. as an essential amino
acid, it's not going to HURT anything, and some veterinary associations
suggest that all cats, symptomatic or not, should be given daily doses of
it. but there is no value in claiming that it, or any other treatment, does
what it does not.

Subject: [Felvtalk] while we await a retest

Hi, I posted the other day about my 4 13 week old foster kittens who tested
positive for FeLV. While we wait out re-testing them, is there anything
that can be done in hopes of boosting their immune system and fighting off
the virus? I am using Pet Tinic liquid vitamins twice a day and
lactoferrin/colostrum supplement in their wet food twice a day..anything
 else we should be doing?

no, wendy, they do NOT carry the mother's antibodies. that is FIV--and the FeLV
test doesn't test for antibodies anyway, it tests for antigens. PLEASE check
before you send things out to the list.

as for lysine, it is specific for the various forms of HERPES viruses, not all
those that cause respiratory symptoms. it causes the herpes virus not to
replicate, it does not boost the immune system per se, and it has no known
effect to date on any other virii. this is not news. as an essential amino
acid, it's not going to HURT anything, and some veterinary associations suggest
that all cats, symptomatic or not, should be given daily doses of it. but there
is no value in claiming that it, or any other treatment, does what it does
not.

I swear by lysine for humans and animals (is there a difference?  lol); it's an
anti-viral.  Make sure you buy pure lysine.  I have also heard great things
about Vitamin C, but have never used it with my cats.  Let us know how it goes.

I also want to point out, antibodies or not, that retesting should still be
done after a certain age, when a positive result at an earlier age might revert
to negative after a certain age.  That was my point.  13 weeks could be too
early, however I'm not sure specifically.  If someone knows the earliest
testing/retesting dates, could you post them?  We might be able to save Julie
some money.

Hi Lynne,

It sounds like the poor guy really needs some medical attention. Is he tame?
Where do you live? Is there any way you can keep him in a pen or something and
just get him tested for Felv? If he is positive he could spread it to all the
other cats in the neighborhood. If you consider getting him tested I can help
you find a rescue that will take him. If he is not positive than you can keep
him if you want.

If those people have any other animals I think you should call the Humane
Society and have their animals removed.

Hi Lynne,

There is a reason you're seeing this little fellow, and I'm sure it's to help.
But give yourself a little time to breath and make the decision on how to
handle the situation, especially considering what you went through with BooBoo.
It doesn't sound like you need to make the decision right away. Give it a
little time and it will come to you.

I'm totally con

[Felvtalk] Felv Testing Interval for kittens

2008-07-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Could someone remind me of the age when testing kittens for Felv is. I
have some 8 week old kittens, Miss'Tache, Gilbert, Perry, and Eeyore,
born to a feral queen, queen is untested. My rescue group wants to test
them real soon.

I also have former tom cat who has tested positive for Felv via a snap
test, he is in a different room from the kittens and from my cats. As of
right now he is not showing any symptoms. He is a sweetheart, I think he
is a dumped cat left to fend for himself.

i've never gotten a straight answer to this question, tho a recent article i
read--remember, i'm in the process of compiling an up-to-date list, so i
read things, save the links, and will go back and actually organize them
later, so i DON'T have the links right now--said that, because of what the
test tests, the antigens instead of antibodies, kittens can be tested at any
age.

if there's anyone who can explain this to those of us who are doing our best
to be scientists when we really aren't, i know that i would appreciate it!

I also have former tom cat who has tested positive for Felv via a snap
test, he is in a different room from the kittens and from my cats. As of
right now he is not showing any symptoms. He is a sweetheart, I think he
is a dumped cat left to fend for himself.

 Thanks

 Sam
