[Felvtalk] URGENT NEED - RED BANK, NJ -- Neutered Male FIV Cat Needs Home by MONDAY, 3/2 !!
someone on the FeLV lists is from the red bank area, if i recall, so while this is OT for those lists, i apologize. if anyone knows anyone in NJ who could possibly short-term foster til we could actually do something for this cat, the contact info is below. thanks, MC CONTACT: jbeninc...@gmail.com From: Joan Benincasa jbeninc...@gmail.com Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2009 9:00:32 AM Subject: URGENT NEED - Neutered Male FIV Cat Needs Home Hi, I had been feeding a stray cat (Chester) all winter, trapped him on 2/15/09, and had him neutered, tested for FELV/FIV, vaccinated, and meds applied to rid him of fleas and worms at the local SPCA. He tested positive at the SPCA for FIV only. They released him to me and I took him to my vet, where he has been since Tuesday, 02/24/09. My vet gave him a complete physical exam and blood analysis and also retested him for FIV using Western Blot I think as well as the IDEXX SNAP Antigen test again. Chester is FIV positive. Vet said that he is a healthy cat and his blood work was otherwise squeaky clean - no infections or problems. FIV cats can only transmit the virus to other cats by a bite wound or scratch that draws blood. FIV cannot be transmitted to humans or to other animals. Nevertheless, he must be in a one cat home or in a home with only FIV cats, and he must be kept indoors to avoid contact with other cats and to minimize exposure to germs that can compromise his immune system. FIV cats can live a full lifespan with proper nutrition and vet care, as with all cats. Chester needs a home ASAP because he can no longer be boarded at the vet inasmuch as they only do medical boarding and Chester will have no place to go as of Monday, 03/02/09. If that happens, he may have to be put to death because (1) he has been use to being fed for two months now and to put him out without food would be very cruel - I cannot continue to feed him because of complaints to my apartment manager and it is against the town's law and the animal control officer is aware of it, plus (2) Chester should not be allowed to come in contact with non-FIV cats, of which there are several pets let out by their owners in this apt complex. Chester is not feral, but needs socialization; he allowed my vet to pet and stroke him. The vet picked him up, however, Chester was tense, but not aggressive - just scared. Chester is probably about 3-4 years old, black and white, green eyes, and adorable. Please help if you can. Time is really getting short inasmuch as I have to pick him up from my vet on Monday, 03/02/09 and still have no home for him and no place to go. Thanks, as always, MC! And of course it's not at all true, that he can't mix with other cats, just the old party line. Darn, be glad when the vets grow out of that. L., S. Tasker, et al. (2009). Use of pradofloxacin to treat experimentally induced Mycoplasma hemofelis infection in cats. Am J Vet Res 70(1): 105-11. Mycoplasma hemofelis, formerly known as Hemobartonella felis, is the causative agent of feline infectious anemia. The bacterium is spread through flea bites and causes hemolytic anemia that may result in the death of infected cats. It is believed that most infected cats do not clear the organisms even with appropriate antimicrobial treatment, which most commonly is doxycycline. Pradofloxacin is a new fluoroquinolone antibiotic for veterinary use that appears to have increased effectiveness against many bacteria. In this study, treatment of cats infected with M. hemofelis with doxycycline was compared to low and high doses of pradofloxacin. All treatment regimens were equally effective in improving the clinical condition and blood parameters of infected cats. When assessed by molecular detection for clearance of the organism, both low and high dose pradofloxacin were effective, while none of the doxycycline-treated animals completely cleared detectable organisms. The authors concluded that pradofloxacin not only had anti-M. hemofelis effects, it may be more effective at long term M. hemofelis organism clearance than doxycycline. Re: [Felvtalk] My Mickey
I am so sorry for your loss. You gave him a wonderful life and I guess that's all any of us can ask for. May God bless you. Jenny Viky Digangi vdiga...@dss.state.la.us wrote: In October I joined the group requesting information on hemangio sarcoma which my felv cat was diagnosed with. Everything I read was bad. He had the first tumor removed on 10-13-08. It came back this time two tumors and they were removed on 1-6-09. This surgery was very, very difficult on him to get over. Then on 2-13-09 the vet discovered it had come back even more rapidly than the first time. x-rays showed nothing in the lungs or spleen but the liver was hard to see though not enlarged. This past Monday he stopped eating and drinking and I knew it was time. The next morning I took my heart disguised as a little 7 pound black and white angel to the vet for the final time. The night before I laid him on the bed next to me and he stared into my face purring for hours. The cancer had spread to his liver and I knew I could not stand for him be in pain. Before I took him to the vet I wrapped him in his cat blanket and walked him all over the yard so he could see his ducks and feel the air on his face. He loved to be outside. So from start to finish he lived 19 weeks from diagnosis. This is a deadly, aggressive cancer and I hope none of you experience it with your babies. I had my little man for 8 years and 7 months and they were worth every minute.
