[Felvtalk] Bernie - Uveitis
Hi everyone - Just asking if you guys could say a little prayer for Bernie (1 yr. 8mos FelV +) He isn't doing well and I'm afraid things could get worse soon. He was diagnosed with uveitis about 2 weeks ago. The iris is still inflamed even though we are using the predisone eye drops 3 times a day. We could do a biopsy and get a sample of the substance to see if it is lymphoma, but as of right now, I don't think I'm going to do it. I don't want to put him through that and there is a chance that the sample would be unusable. The eye specialist also said that if it is lymphoma, it is most likely somewhere else in his body as well. He is eating normally and if you start to play with him he will play a little. But his activity level is low, sleeping alot, and he won't play with his brother. He started having diarreha last night. Also, if he doesnt get his eye drops (One day i could only give it to him once), I noticed he wouldnt eat for about 12 hours and just laid around the whole day. I'm so sorry to hear that. Wonder if something else could be causing the diarrhea, like giardia or something? Just thought I'd mention it. Maria My Junior had uveitis which turned into glaucoma. He had and injury to his eye before developing FELV. Anyway he was in pain and it sounds like that may be the problem with your kitty. He was put on pain medicine and it made all the world in his activity level. These kitties are very special and you cannot predict how long they will be with us. Make sure he has quality of life. That is what I did for Junior. Missing my baby and will be praying for your guy to feel better. More sad news to add to the rest of the sad news out there. Frosty Paws and I have an appointment for 4:30 tomorrow at our vet's. I think it is time to let him go, and I refuse to let him suffer needlessly. We all know how our FeLV kids can suffer at the end. So I believe I'm doing the right thing. We'll see what the vet says. I've only had him for about a month and a half. He was a stray who somebody took in. She had him neutered and combo tested, and the test came back positive. Since she'd never had a FeLV + cat before, she felt a little overwhelmed, and since I already had 3 of them, I agreed to take him on. Frosty has always been quiet - the woman who rescued him said he was the most quiet and non-confrontational cat she'd ever met - but I wonder if what we thought of as simply quiet (since she didn't have him for long, she didn't truly know his personality, either) was actually a sign of illness. He's looked a little down for the past week, and this morning his breathing was really labored, and was still labored when I returned home from work. Charlotte's breathing was the same way before she got a blood transfusion, and she died a month later in spite of everything. He also appears to have lost some weight, even though I've seen him eating. What do you all think? Is there anything else that can be done? Something we can try? I don't want to lose him if there's a possibility of saving him, but I don't want him to suffer, either. Thank you for all your concern and advice. It is kind of hard to say if anything can be done for him as we don't have a clue what is wrong with him. If he is severely anemic, it could be cause by the FeLV or it might be Hemobartonella, which is very curable. I have had luck on two anemic FeLV positive kittens using Acemannan. If he is having trouble breathing because of anemia, I would say he would need a transfusion just to allow time for any meds to work no matter what the cause. Well, I just got off the phone with the woman who rescued him, and she told me some things I hadn't known about. First of all, she said he'd frequently been sick: lethargic, lifeless, with labored breathing. She didn't know he was positive at the time. And I thought she'd had him for just a little while, but in fact he'd lived with her since last April. I'm not sure when he was tested. So this guy has been symptomatic for some time, now. I wish I'd known this. I would have still taken him in - but I'd have begun some sort of treatment a month ago. She's a reiki practicioner, and when he had these episodes of illness she'd work on him and he'd recover. GLOW for both all of you. have you asked frosty paws what he wants? let him know that you'd to have him stay with you, but that it's okay if what he needs is to go on--sometimes i think they stay longer than they might have, just to keep us happy. he'll tell you if he's ready to go on, and if so, know that he takes with him the sure knowledge that he was loved and cared for. Could he have a heart problem? Asthma? Does he still want to eat? When Keisha was in cardiac trouble (congestive heart failure) she did not want to eat. Asthmatics will choose breathing over eating (my Teddy).
