Hey folks, got an emergency with a possible FELV+ cat in Austin, Texas.
He's had one snap test (and that's with the felv/fiv/heartworm test, which
we know there are a lot of false +s with). There is no one to hold him for
 a confirmatory IFA.

Someone wrote me asking for help, this is her description of him:

He is slated to be euthanized at 5pm today. This boy is very affectionate,
loving to be held, petted, scratched, etc. He was even purring while being
petted at the counter at the vet's office with all the strange scents and
 animal noises going on!

He's pretty sick at the moment. Vet says he's extremely anemic. That's why
he hasn't been eating much. And the heat has exacerbated the problem since
he's been an outdoor cat. Vet also says the condition is treatable, but the
treatment makes him very infectious. So what he needs is an indoor home
either in a one-cat household or in a house where all the cats are feline
 leukemia positive.

It's breaking my heart because he's such a sweetie. I'm hoping to find
someone who can provide a home for this baby so he won't have to be
 euthanized.

 I've asked for pics etc

I also asked for an extra day which is hopefully being negotiated. I know
someone on this list has room for a wonderful survivor of this horrible
 Texas heat and drought.

I've gotten some wonderful kitties placed as a result of this list (just
ask their moms) so am hoping we can pull a rabbit out of a hat one more
 time!

Re: [Felvtalk] FELV+ Emergency in Austin, TX

2011-08-21 Thread Kelley Saveika
I can't even get anyone to hold on to a healthy kitten temporarily - all my
favors are called in long ago, and I've even having problems placing barn
cats. . We could start treatment, but this lady gets more attached to this
cat by the day and it really is not fair to her (or the cat) to put him
through treatment and then have him PTS. We have an FELV sanctuary, but
unfortunately they only take in cats when there is money to be made off
them.

We did ship a cat to Best Friends once, but they do not always have room
either.

Like I said, this list has always been my go-to resource for FELV cats and I
have found placement for every single one in the past.

It is possible he has a false positive, but as he is anemic and sick, I'm
leaning towards true +. Unfortunately as I said there is no one to hold him
for 6 weeks and if we put him back outside he will be dead in 6 weeks.

He's pretty sick at the moment. Vet says he's extremely anemic.
That's why he hasn't been eating much. And the heat has exacerbated
the problem since he's been an outdoor cat. Vet also says the
condition is treatable, but the treatment makes him very infectious.
So what he needs is an indoor home either in a one-cat household or
in a house where all the cats are feline leukemia positive.

It's breaking my heart because he's such a sweetie. I'm hoping to
find someone who can provide a home for this baby so he won't have
to be euthanized.

The prblem with rescue groups right now, is that with people loosing jobs and
homes, there is no more room. We have 3 groups within driving distance here
and they and their fosters are all full up. They have had to turn animals away
because they do not have enough room or people to care for them. That is one
reason why I am hoping to build an outdoor shelter, I could take in more cats
then. Right now, I am full up with 7 indoor/outdoor cats. Can't really afford
to feed and buy litter for more.

I've gotten some wonderful kitties placed as a result of this list (just
ask their moms) so am hoping we can pull a rabbit out of a hat one more
  time!

What she needs most is time to learn that she can trust you. Shorty took 8
months before I could pick him up. He ate from my hand and then on day let me
scratch under his chin. That felt good so next day I got to rub his head. Then
things started comin much faster. You just have to keep tryin whatever comes
to you and if you feel good about doing it, go for it. She will let you know

I can't even get anyone to hold on to a healthy kitten temporarily - all my
favors are called in long ago, and I've even having problems placing barn cats.
. We could start treatment, but this lady gets more attached to this cat by
the day and it really is not fair to her (or the cat) to put him through
treatment and then have him PTS. We have an FELV sanctuary, but unfortunately
they only take in cats when there is money to be made off them.

We did ship a cat to Best Friends once, but they do not always have room either.

Diane is right. Homie likes my small laundry hamper. Of course, i has to
have a piece of my clothes in it. She barely fits in it and nw that
Harley has seen her in it, he has taken over another one. I got sevel
small ones for whites, light colored cothes and dark ones. Now I am down

I have my first crate trained dog...he loves his crate and, even
though rarely confined there now, puts himself in it for numerous
 reasons.

Both Copper and Thomas like there travel carriers, putting themselves
in them when they want peace and quiet...or to tell me that it is time
to go home etc. Indoor cats find places under furniture etc when they
 want to feel safe.

I agree. Bonnie, you should stop thinking like a human (being caged

acclimating, or take the next step in the other direction and bring
 her inside. ;-)

I continue to be amazed by her progress. I can't stand the idea of
her in that cage for two or three more weeks. I'm torn between
buying a bigger cage (hard to afford right now) and releasing her
sooner, say in 3 or 4 more days. I think she might stick around.
My biggest fear is that she might try to return to my aunt's house,
 about 5 blocks away.
 Im torn.

I have always said that animals are more honest with us than we are

I am just happy that Hemi found an honest, loving person. I have
had 3 ferals. It took me an average of 6 - 8 months to gain
complete trust, but oce tey passed that threshold, there was no
turning back. They became the biggest lovers, greatest lap sitters
and demanded to be on the bed at night. Shows what a little love
 can do.

Today when I fed Hemy (she's in a cage on my back covered deck) she
ate while I was there. I spoke to her and reached a finger through

[Felvtalk] NYC ACC rescued cat felv+ and in need of home

2011-08-21 Thread TANYA NOE
Please read and go to this great girls link, if you know anyone who can give
this girl a home please forward it on:

New York NY - Jessica was relinquished to ACC by her colony caretaker because
she wasn't eating well. She was one night away from death when she was pulled
by a rescue group. It turned out she only needed some minor dental work, which
has been done.

After being rescued we learned that Jessica is both friendly and also FeLV+.
She belongs in a home because she is sweet and loving and enjoys human
companionship. As you can see, she is also a beautiful girl, mostly white with
calico markings on her body and tail. She now eats like a champ, uses her
litter box perfectly and wants nothing more than to hang out with you, rub
against your legs, sit on your lap for petting.

Jessica is about 1 - 2 years old and at this time has no symptoms of illness.
However, she should be homed as an only cat, or in a household with another
FeLV+ cat. The lifespan of FeLV+ cats varies greatly. In a stress-free
environment, fed a good quality diet, Jessica is likely to have many healthy
years ahead of her.

[Felvtalk] My 1 year old just diagnosed

2011-08-21 Thread Marcia Baronda
Hi everyone! My one year old sweet litle boy was just diagnosed. I have a
million questions and hope to learn a lot from all of you. This is every hard
to swallow. I have 3 other adult cats in myj house that have not been
vaccinated for felv. I didn't see a reason for it, I didn't trust the vaccine
and I am sorry now. Funny thing is, is that I tried so hard to keep my cats
healthy. I wouldn't even wear my shoes in the house for fear I would carry
something in!
Anyway, my little boy Fletch has a fever, horrible looking coat and I can feel
his hipbones and some of his backbone. He continues to eat and drink ok. They
are on a grain free diet and have a water fountain.
Thanks so much for being here.
