Re: Help! Vaccine Reaction?

2005-04-28 Thread Sharon Siders
Thanks so much, Sally. Some vaccination seems necessary, but I agree that it can be overdone. I don't intend to vaccinate again for at least three years, if then. The vet agrees on the three years.

Dear Sharon:My most sincere condolences for the loss of your mom. Even though we are able to talk to our human loved ones and express all that we feel a need to share while they are still here with us in corporeal form (unlike with our furkids), it still leaves emptiness and emotional pain when we have to let them go. We humans have such a need for that which we can see and touch. You will find that she is still with you in many intangible ways, though I know right now that may not seem like much comfort. Having feline furkids can be very comforting at a time like this...they are close to their spiritual nature and sponges for our emotions. With regard to vaccine reactions, the fact that many kittys do react negatively to them should tell us something. Vaccines are a significant stress to the immune system and especially the way
they are usually given (too often and in multiple combinations). Most holistic vets do not recommend the widespread use of vaccines, and certainly not given as yearly boosters. One needs to assess the risks vs. any real benefit...such as sacrificing long-term health for short-term disease prevention. What is the liklihood of exposure? Is it a life-threatening illness you are seeking to prevent? Or, is there a law mandating it?If one finds it absolutely necessary to give vaccines to his/her furkids, things that can help to minimize negative reactions would be:1) Use only single-valent vaccines;2) Administer an immune booster such as Transfer Factor for 2-3 days prior to vaccinating, and 2-3 days after.3) Give a dose of homeopathic Thuja in conjunction with the vaccine to help override any toxic effect. The second recommendation comes from Dr. J. Lauren De Rock, a holistic vet in Aromas, CA, who introduced me to the
benefits and use of Transfer Factor therapy. She said she has not experienced any negative reactions to vaccines since she began using that protocol. The first and third recommendations come from the holistic vet Dr. Martin Goldstein (author of The Nature of Animal Healing) and also Dr. Don Hamilton (author of Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs). There is a thorough discussion of the dubious legacy of vaccines in both their books.I do hope your Carolina will rebound and be back to her usual self with no long-lasting ill effects. For any cats who have a significantly negative reaction to vaccines, I would think twice before re-vaccinating. Humans do not need to have yearly boosters for every thing under the sun after being initially innoculated (only periodic boosters for tetanus, which is a toxin and not a virus) and a wiser approach would be to do titer testing to determine whether or not re-vaccination is really necessary
when faced with a real risk of exposure.Sally in San Jose__Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

Nina and Gypsy/Calcium Carbonate for baby food

2005-04-28 Thread Nina

 Hello everyone,
I got this post from the vet that monitors the IBD list I belong to. I
thought I'd pass it on to you guys for when you have to syringe feed,
or resort to baby food. I don't know how much the calcium and vitamins
change the taste, but it would be really nice to know they are getting
a balanced diet when feeding baby food.
Nina

The other thought is just to get her on one diet and stick with
it but
syringe feed her. I usually use Wellness plain chicken for my syringe
feeding
although I am not sure how Wellness will do with her diarrhea. About
5% of cats
with diarrhea do not do well on Wellness. I add a bit of water to the
food...puree in a blender...run it through a strainer so my syringe
does not
clog...then syringe feed.

Your other option would be to syringe feed her plain meat baby
food...but add
some calcium and B-complex vitamins.

I finally got a chance to do some calculations for adding calcium
carbonate
to baby food. A 2.5 ounce jar needs about 50 mg of calcium added. The
NOW
brand of calcium carbonate has 1,200 mg per tsp...which makes it very
difficult
to calculate properly. However, you could combine 6 jars of food and
then that
would require 300 mg which would be 1/4 tsp of the NOW CC. Other
brands have
different amounts of elemental calcium in each tsp so you need to pay
attention to that. Here are some links to the NOW brand of CC.

http://www.nowcatalog.com/1245.html

http://www.iherb.com/calcarbo.html

You also need to add some B-Complex. Use 10-20 mg per 6 jars of baby
food.
They come in 50mg capsules so use just a portion of the capsule. If
syringe
feeding, go with 10 mg - or less - because you do not want to create a
food
aversion. Taste it yourself to test it. B vitamins are strong
tasting. If
using a feeding tube, I would go with the 20 mg/6 jars of baby food.

I would also add in enough taurine to provide 60 mg/day.

Re: Ordering feline interferon

2005-04-28 Thread Melbeach
I'm trying to get it. I'll be going to my regular vet in a few minutes. Maybe
he already ordered. He was waiting for a response from Abbeyvet. But I did
tell him I would pay down on it first. So he might be waiting for that. But if
everything works out, you are on the top of my list Michelle. I just can't
guarantee anything yet. If something were to happen to Brissle before my vet
orders, I doubt that he would order at that point. That's why I wanted to know
the exact procedure. I'll find out where it stands pretty soon.

As far as combining dexamethasone and depomedrol, neither vet would go for it.
The internist said I need to stick with just one. He was pretty vague about
which one would be better. It was hard to get past him being pissed off about
the advice I got from you guys. Oh well. He's pretty much leaving my options
at 1. Chemo 2. Blood transfusion or 3. Pick a steroid. So I guess I'll be
picking one!

Tad,
yes it does hurt too much to loose the young ones. I know all too well
about seeing positive signs and having hope and getting even more attached than
before. It's too cruel... but then you go on... and I am glad you are able
to take care of, and able to have the comfort of your other
cats.

I
really lost it today, but sending out the link to my niece's cat comic book was
something positive for me to do and being able to do that is a sign I am getting
out of my own funk.

Tad, I am so sorry - the loss of a youngster can hit very hard. My stepdad rescued a kitten he saw thrown from a truck, it's sibling didn't make the landing, and she died less than a week later - tiny little thing, just barely a handful - from starvation induced pneumonia... There was nothing they could have done to save her.My mom, stepdadandnephew were utterly broken-hearted and she'd been with them only days. And when you've spent days and weeks and even months, sometimes, nursing a special needs animal, the bond that develops is very deep and the loss cuts that much more. I hope that knowing there are other people out therewho feel as deeply for their animals as you do for yours helps a little. Time will pass and you will remember the good feelings more than the sad, though you won't ever forget Baby Kitty.

Re: I'm scared for Grace - dilated left pupil

2005-04-28 Thread Barb Moermond
Nina,
go search in the archives from 1998, my Ninja had strange pupil issues and there was nothing at all wrong with her eyes. She had uneven dilation and it would changeoccasionally as to which eye was more dilated, but they were both more dilated than normal. My vet even checked her ocular pressure, to see if uveitis was an issue. Nope, her pressure was actually a little low! We'd had discussions then about odd dilation and reverse-D pupils and how sometimes they just seem to happen in FeLV+ kitties, with no obvious reason why. Keep an eye on her and if there is any drainage that is not a normal healthy eye booger color, then definitely take her in. You may want to have her looked at just in case, but, in my opinion, you do NOT need to panic; it's just a weird thing thathappens with some FeLV+ kitties.Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I just posted about how well Grace has been doing. I'm about to lose my mind, I'm so scared. I'm really trying to hold it together and not get ahead of myself, but the thought of losing Grace, right after Jazz... There must be something really wrong with me. Grace has been doing so well, I thought maybe... just maybe...About 2 hours ago I noticed that Grace's left eye's pupil is dilated. It's contracting some in sunlight and getting bigger as the light lessens, but it's definitely larger than her right eye. It doesn't look irritated, no tearing, no signs of abrasion. I ran my fingers over both sides of her eyes and face, the left side doesn't seem any different than the right. It doesn't seem to bother her when I touch that side. She's acting perfectly normal otherwise. In fact the last week or so, she's been such a kitten. Running,
jumping cavorting, chasing great big Kimba Cat around, just having a grand time with life, it's been such a joy to witness. I called my Internist's office and spoke with Michelle. She said it's possible that she got something on her paw and rubbed it over that eye, a plant, or something in the yard that's toxic. I don't think that's it. I don't think there's anything out there that is toxic, and if there is, it's sure taken them a long time to find it. Her other thought was that it's something neurological. Something, (oh shit), pressing on her optic nerve and causing the pupil to dilate. Her sister Molly had a tumor behind, I think the same eye. Her eye started to protrude and then it ruptured when she was being rushed to the ER. If it's any worse by tomorrow, I'm going to go to my vet's and sit in the lobby until she'll see me. Do you think I should take her in even if it remains stable?Has anyone had any
experience with this sort of thing? Any ideas? I really don't think I can take it if I lose my Grace. Please pray that this passes and she's okay. Hi Nina!

I've actually got three cats with this condition (I don't recall the
technical name for it, but it's common among cats with FeLV)...Marvin
(he's about 4 years old) has a pupil that's completely blown, but is
healthy in every other respect...My Ewok's right pupil will dilate every
once in a while and has had this condition for almost two years now
(he's also healthy in every other respect...the dilated pupil has been
his only outward sign of the virus)...and my Sleepypants just recently
developed the dilated pupil-thing about 3 or 4 months ago...and, again,
he's doing just fine!

I don't think that anyone really knows exactly why this happens to cats
with FeLV...but it doesn't seem to be a condition that hurts them or
affects their quality/quantity of life! Hope this helps!

Jen

Oh Barb, I remember that kitten. It is so sad to lose them so young. I
think the pain is amplified when we take them in praying for miracles,
almost expecting them to happen. It's like what happened to Tad, they
bounce back, you think you've saved them and then wham, heartache.
