Re: Felvtalk Digest, Vol 8, Issue 156-Stinky is home!
So glad to hear Stinky is feeling alittle better. I hope the IFA is right and it she is negative, and if there is a chance there could be cancer somewhere you may want to start looking around for a good oncologist or internal specialist. Here is an excellent website with lots of information about various feline cancers including over 30 case studies of cats with different types of cancers. There is a very good vet list including specialists and information about nutrition and lots more. update on results of testing
I was a member of this group previously but unsubscribed when our FELV + died in June of this year. We have three other cats who had lived with him his whole life and I just wanted everyone to know that they have all tested negative on both Elisa and IFA. We are of course very happy about this but I wanted that information to be available to others who worry about the contagiousness of the disease.
RE: update on results of testing
Title: Message Thanks for that Robin. A couple of Qs, if you don't mind me asking: Did the 3 negative cats have FeLV vaccinationsevery year? Also, were the Elisa and IFA tests recent ones -- ones that you just had done? I'm in permanent conflict about mixing (I never have mixed). answers for Kerry - results of testing
We only started testing the cats initially two years ago so I don't know how long our postive was positive but once we found out he was we vaccinated the others. The negative Elisa/IFA tests were all done a month ago, after our postive died. We didn't deliberately mix but there was no way I was going to separate our positive from his buddies. I have to say now that I would probably test any incoming cats first. I imagine some strains are more virulent than others and I wouldn't feel good exposing our existing cats again. I kind of wish for the old days when we didn't know about FELV and just adopted needy cats.
RE: answers for Kerry - results of testing
Title: Message Thanks Robin. Yes, my quarantined cats are down to 2 now, one of which has tested negative twice. She came with the colony (all the others were positive) so there was no way I was going to take her from them--they were/are feral and she was the most scared of them all. It would have been too cruel. I would love to mix them all but I'm just too fearful that the worst may happen. Belinda and Robin: Thank you both for the information. Belinda you have been a wealth of suggestions- and support- thanks ever so much. Robin, it is good to hear that your other cats are fine- I sure hope the same of our cats if the second round of testing does show FeLV. Thanks so much to you both and to everyone on this site! Re: Jen
Hi Guys! We're back! Physically, anyway, mentally, I'm still having a hard time recovering from the nightmare of the evacuation! :( It took us over 55 hours to get from Houston to Little Rock!! Our evacuation route was bumper to bumper for about 50 of those hours...we spent a couple of nights on the side of the road and, I'm not sure if it made the local news in areas other than Texas, but we were one of those thousands of people stranded on the side of the road because we ran out of gas! Thanks to a good samaritan, we were able to make our way to Little Rock on Saturday staying just ahead of the hurricane the entire way! We literally could only sleep for an hour or so Friday night (we were still in Texas at this point with no room at any hotel or shelter until we got into Arkansas) because as the hurricane approached, it brought tornados. But we finally made it to Arkansas early Saturday with animals in tow...Everyone did great despite having to be confined to a car for two days! Little Rock was wonderful, everyone was very kind and helpful...we even managed to make it to the river front area the day before we returned to Texas for a much needed beer (or two) at an English pub called The Underground. :) Anyhoo, unfortunately, I had to take Ewok to his oncologist appointment this morning...more car trauma!! The poor guy, just got out of the damn car and here I am sticking him back in it for a half-hour car ride to his doctor's appointment! We're all very much looking forward to this weekend! We dodged a bullet and only lost a few tree limbs in the storm (only 1/4 of rain!!)...it's sad to think that we would have been safer staying in our own home during the storm!! Hope this all makes sense! My brain is still all over the place (I'm absolutely exhausted)...thank you all for your positive thoughts...I have yet to read though the list email, but I know there have been a couple of losses (Julie and Nina??)...I believe I saw something about Grace... :( Take care, all... Gang, I'm trying not to panic, but Guinevere (2 years old, FeLV-) has been vomiting since yesterday afternoon. She continued to try to eat and drink, but a little while ago, I tried to tempt her with her favorite treats, and she refused them and them vomited up whatever water she drank. It has a pinkish tint to it. Suggestions? My vet is closed, and I spent all available cash on Salome' 2 weeks ago. Re: Need advice quick please
Terri, My experience with this was when my orange girl Rosalie ate a semi- toxic plant. She got over it, thank heavens, but my vet x-rayed her to make sure she hadn't swallowed something. When she hadn't stopped vomiting for over 24 hours, he asked if he could do exploratory surgery in case she had ingested something that didn't show up on the X-ray. You might want to keep this in mind. I would call an emergency vet for advice if she doesn't stop. Re: Felvtalk Digest, Vol 8, Issue 156-Stinky is home!
Well the IFA result is good. Maybe you can get a handle on what's going on with her. It's also good that there were some red blood cells! Go Stinky! tonya --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Friends: Our Stinky cat is home, for now anyway! She seems to be a little better. She promptly gave the dog a swat as soon as he got within reach so, she seems her old self again in that respect. The IFA test ( 2nd test ) came back negative! Yes! Now as all of you probably know, we have to retest in 30-60 days and even if she does not have the FeLV she still has a very serious illness ( probably cancer ). The anemia is not good although, we did find out there has been a few red blood cells produced- not nearly enough but, a few! We have to take her back on Monday or Tuesday for another CBC and we will have to have another transfusion if she drops again like before but, they gave us antibiotics and Interferon ( I think I spelled that wrong ) but, they are also interested in taking a look at some of the other drugs I have been given information about through all of your kind emails! So, the news is not great but, hey, at this point we are grateful for what ever we can get! Thanks to you all for your prayers and good thoughts and for all the information and support you have given us! Stinky is still fighting the good fight at least for now! And, again, thanks for all your information and prayers and support! You guys are a great bunch of folks! Stinky's Mom and Dad
Re: Need advice quick please
I ti s generally best to take food and water away (food for 24 hours and water for 12, I think) when they are vomiting uncontrollably like that, to let their system settle. Pink could mean blood, I guess, like an ulcer or something. I think I would take food and water away and if she is still vomiting in a few hours take her to an emergency vet. Most veterinary hospitals should have some sort of fund to help out, or at least be willing to do a payment plan if you explain the situation. Michelle
Re: Need advice quick please
Thanks, Bonnie. We did discuss that. I don't have any plants that she can get to though. They're all up high, and she isn't a climber, so it's highly unlikely that she ate a plant. As for any other pica behavior, she's never been prone to that. She's negative, and has always been perfectly healthy up until now. Keeping my fingers crossed that the bloodwork is as unremarkable as her physical exam and x-ray. =^..^= Terri, Siggie the Tomato Vampire, Guinevere, Sammi, Travis, and 6 furangels: RuthieGirl, Samantha, Arielle, Gareth, Alec Salome' =^..^= Furkid Photos! http://mysite.verizon.net/vze7sgqa/My FeLV Site: http://pages.ivillage.com/ruthiegirl1/MyFeLVinformationSite/My Personal Page: http://www.geocities.com/ruthiegirl1/terrispage.html?1083970447350 - Original Message - From: BONNIE J KALMBACH To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Friday, September 30, 2005 5:02 PM Subject: Re: Need advice quick please Terri,My experience with this was when my orange girl Rosalie ate a semi-toxic plant.
