Usually the mother goes in the trap very quickly because she hears
and smells the kittens.

I thought about that, actually, but I was also afraid of leaving
kittens as they are traumatized..

A good way to catch the mother is to put the kittens in a closed
carrier directly infront of an opened, baited trap.

Hi, everyone, I wanted to share a couple of new things –

I rescued three baby cats yesterday who were living under the crawl
space of the abandoned house, which is now bought and be ready to
be renovated.. the new owner was planning to get rid of the kittens
along with all the kitties who live under the crawl space and I
offered to take them. The babies were actually under the hole
under the crawl space which only the size of my entire hand and
thought I and Kathy (my rescue friend) were never going to be able
to get them out… but finally using a little fish net to get one by
one out – they were only 6 weeks old, one calico, one tabby and one
turtleshell (?) and they are all so cute.

The one sad thing is that their mama came to look for the babies
while we were under the crawl space, she was so worried about us
doing something to the babies.. one time, I thought we should just
leave and have the mama take care of the babies and I worry that
later on, she might take babies some other crawl space near there
(there a few, unfortunately), and people might close the crawl
space without knowing that they were there.. the mama came back
several times (while we were there as we were there for about 5
hours).. I felt very bad for mama but I decided to take the babies
from her..

I tried to trap the mama kitty last night but I couldn’t – there
are several kitties there.. I trapped one who looked like mama..
but she must be from mama’s previous litter – she is less than a
year old..

Anyway, I wanted to ask you to pray that I will be able to catch
mama soon (I probably could, if I don’t mind catching all other
kitties who live there.. but I don’t know where I could put them
now as I am running out of crate) --- and the mama will stay safe
and she will not be worrying too much about their babies. I am
heartbroken for the mama –I feel very badly for taking the babies
from their mama…I know that this is probably the right thing.. but
I still cannot not think about the mama…

Cats with leukemia can still have a good life, and we hope that this will be the case for poor little Bert. He currently appears to be in very good health. He is very playful and affectionate, and is DESPERATELY seeking a home. Bert has been fully vaccinated and neutered. If you would like to give this sweet little boy a chance to live a good life, please send an e-mail and request an application, or call the shelter. Don't pass him by and think that someone ELSE will surely adopt him-LET IT BE YOU Bert was adopted last year along with his FeLV+ friend Jill by a woman who turned out to be bi-polar, and he was returned to the shelter. His best friend Jill was soon adopted out again, leaving Bert behind. Bert is scheduled to be euthanized soon-PLEASE help him!!

Jen,

Don't give up hope! This virus is as unpredictable as
it is heartbreaking, and your kitty could turn around
in no time at all. It's ok to prepare for the worst,
but don't expect it. I will definitely keep Allie in
my prayers. Just love her as much as you can, spoil
her rotten, and also, take pictures so if she does
cross the bridge, you will have visible memories of
her to hold on to in the tough times. Keep your chin
up and stay positive for Allie!

Jen,

Equistim is the same thing as ImmunoRegulin; Equistim
is the generic. If your vet can't get it, you can
order it online and have it shipped fast for about $50
including shipping (it might be less; I can't
remember). I ordered Cricket's through Revival Animal
Health.

weather forecast. They told me they would email and let me know when it
would be used if they use it, so I don't watch the news every morning.

Just now on the weather forecast they showed a photo of the beach, it
was overcast and cloudy but in the clouds there was a VERY clear section
on the right that looked exactly like the outline of a cats face and
even more looks exactly like a photo I have of Bailey (a close up I took
several years ago), same tilt of his head, same white mark on the right
side of his face that made him look like he was always smiling. And the
weather forecaster remarked doesn't that look like a cats face, that's
when I could clearly see it. I'm going to try and find out when the
person that sent it in took it.

It looked like the photo in the link below, mostly just the face part
... it gave me chills!

Now that's a sign. Bailey doesn't do anything half way does he?? Talk
about validation! Even the weather person acknowledged your sign from

you to turn on the news? I wonder who else, and in what other ways, he
effected others watching this morning. Too bad you weren't taping, can
you get a copy somehow? Very cool and very reassuring.

I am so sure that they are adoptable
---and I used to go to adoption clinic every single week a few years ago.. maybe
I did adopted out a couple of them during that time.. (I was very very
selective as to whom ) but considering the number that I have, considering the
amount of time I need to care for the ones I have.. I decided to spend time
taking care of them instead of finding a home for one or two in a year or two
which will not make much difference in my life..

Senior and special needs cats are adoptable. It takes
longer and you work harder at it but I firmly believe that, somewhere, there's
a forever home for every foster cat in my care -- and that forever home is not
necessarily me. You just have to really work on finding adoptive homes.

Several years ago when I trapped Cutie-Pie's babies one by one and
brought them inside, she cried and ran around the house looking for them at
first. But when she saw them in my foyer through the screen door she was fine.
She knew I had them. (They screamed like crazy for her but she was fine
with it.) Cutie-Pie was later trapped and spayed and then returned to my
backyard. She is an untouchable feral girl. Now she is a plump
plush little feral queen who presides over a colony of herself and 4 neutered
feral boys. They live in my backyard and basement, are spoiled rotten
(canned and dry food, catnip), and are very happy and safe there. In all
these years Cutie has never allowed me the pet her, even once, but she will sit
near me when I am outside and blink her eyes at me (throwing kisses).

I've also trapped moms using kittens for bait. It's
heartbreaking until you see the mom weeks after the
spay and she looks so much better and relaxed.

Think of it this way - if you didn't try this - the
kittens will get bigger, she will have a harder time
caring for them. They will start wandering and
something could happen to them. She will get pregnant
again and not want that litter anymore.

When I've brought a feral mom in with kittens and mom
sees I'm willing to take care of the kittens, she is
relieved and it's probably the first break she's had
in a long time. I've had mothers who are sick but you
wouldn't even know it until they understand they no
longer have pretend to be fine just because they have
kittens.

I also will show the kittens to the mom when I can but
I always tell her it's OK, her babies are fine.

Take a deep breath and go for the spay - it will make
a big difference in her quality of life.

I get it girl. You don't have to explain why you do what you do to me,
or probably anyone else on the list. Just in case you were, don't take
offense, they were just trying to help. I don't know how anyone deals
with adoption. I have such a hard time letting go of anyone, which is
why we have so many! You're my hero. I don't know how you take care
of so many. I get so overwhelmed with my family and it's nothing like
yours. What's your secret? Vitamins?

Did you get the pictures I just sent? I sent them to Kerry too, but I
just realized she may have already left town. I called her back
yesterday, (I think it was yesterday, my mind has turned to mush and I
can't remember the simplest things), and she didn't return my call.
Isn't it wonderful news about not only Mickey testing neg, but Momma is
neg too still? She doesn't have anymore felv kitties in the house!!!
Hooray!! And the way she helped convince the money person behind PAWS
to add the felv shelter space! Kerry inspires me too. What a great
person she is. I love the way she looks for and acknowledges the
miracles in her life. It's so great that you got a chance to meet
her. I really would love to figure out a way for us all to get
together. I was talking to Jasmine the other day and she said that she
would be willing to travel for a workshop in AC if we could get enough
people interested. Maybe we could do that and all get together then.
What do you think?

How are all the new guys doing? Have you decided if you are going to
trap the Momma of the new guys yet? If you do, will you release her?
I know how hard it is to do. We have to start trusting that they will
be okay on their own path, without taking personal responsibility for
every one of them. I know, I know, easier said than done.

Much love to you my dear,
Nina

Immunoregulin for Chelsea

2006-05-12 Thread ACALA PET ISSUES
I wanted to thank everyone for the advise given last month regarding 12
month-old felv+ Chelsea who was suffering from severe anemia. She began
responding to treatment fairly quickly and had noticeably improved within
the first 2 weeks. Chelsea has now received 6 injections of immunoregulin
and has regained her normal energy level and has pink gums again. I took
your advise to heart and put her on Droxy and folic acid in addition to the
Pet Tinic, Feline Immune Support and Interferon that she had been receiving.
She's scheduled for 3 more injections of Immunoregulin to complete the
recommended course of treatment. When she gets her last injection, I'll get
blood work done again to determine her current hematocrit level. You may
remember that it was extremely low - 9.6% when she last had blood drawn on

I'm alittle speechless at the moment ... I sometimes turn
the news
on sometimes I don't, this morning something told me to turn it
on. I
had sent a photo of my KC to use on the pet paws section they
use on the
weather forecast. They told me they would email and let me
know when it
would be used if they use it, so I don't watch the news every
morning.

Just now on the weather forecast they showed a photo of the
beach, it
was overcast and cloudy but in the clouds there was a VERY
clear section
on the right that loo

ked exactly like the outline of a cats face and
even more looks exactly like a photo I have of Bailey (a close
up I took
several years ago), same tilt of his head, same white mark on
the right
side of his face that made him look like he was always smiling.
 And the
weather forecaster remarked doesn't that look like a cats face,
that's
when I could clearly see it. I'm going to try and find out
when the
person that sent it in took it.

It looked like the photo in the link below, mostly just the
face part
... it gave me chills!

A new story of Gurfunkle

2006-05-12 Thread Hideyo Yamamoto

Some of you might remember about my beloved Garfunkle who
crossed the bridge in November which seems so hard to believe.. it seems like
just yesterday. I still miss and love him so very much.

My sister who lives in Japan is a sort of psychic (I hate
the term, but it speaks to the point she sees and feels things that no
one might be able to) - since she is my sister, I know that its
true.. she has done and said some amazing things that she wouldnt have
known otherwise in the past..

Anyway, she is planning to go to one of the most spiritual
shrine in Japan
this weekend for spiritual purifications and empowerment, and she had asked me
to send her pictures of all of my animals (the ones still live and ones
crossed) so that their soul/life can be further purified.

Anyway she got the pictures in the mailwhen she
looked at all the pictures, she told me that she saw something very powerful on
the Garfukles picture he said that he was human in his previous
life and something bad happened, and he could no longer trust human in his
previous life and passed away, thats why he was sent back as a cat so
that he would meet someone whom he will be able to trust again.. that was his
life that we had together we bonded so strong and I love him so much and
he loves me so much.. he no longer did not have a doubt in trusting human again
(according to my sister) when he accomplished his mission, he was supposed to
cross the bridge rather with a short life so that now he can have another
journey - now he will be able to trust human again in his next life.. and my
sister told me that thats why he left this so soon as he had a very
specific assignment given to him for this life (I and Garfunkle spent only
three years together) and he is one of the friendliest feral kitties that I
have met from the very beginning I met him.. he was and is and will be so
special to me... and miss him so terribly still

She told me that a soul even after crossing the bridge can
travel so far and so quickly and she told me that he is always right there with
me.. so not to be feeling too lonely..

I just wanted to share my Garfunkle story with everyone.
And am crying again missing my special boy

Hi Cindy,
It doesn't make much sense to me to continue with IR indefinitely. The
way I understand it, it's a bacteria that is introduced to help the
immune response wage an attack. The heightened immune response to the
IR also takes care of whatever problem they were having in the first
place. It doesn't seem reasonable to keep the immune system fighting
when it isn't necessary, it's not like building muscles, (or is it?).
Oh, there's so much I don't know!!

Great work, Kerry!Kerry MacKenzie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Belinda, Rebecca, Marylyn, Wendy, MaryChristine, Janine, Terri, Gloria,Becca, Karen and everyone --I heard some great news last night when I (finally) met up with the PAWSclinic director, Rochelle, to talk about my foster Pookie's mishandledeuthanization by Family Pet.During the course of our conversation she began talking about the new PAWSshelter opening in Chicago next year, and so I asked *her* if an FeLV areawas planned. (I had not said much to her about the phone call I had from herboss, PAWS' owner, Paula Fasseas, apart from the fact that I felt that itwas a good conversation and didn't just seem like a token PR gesture.)I fully expected her to say no, or, we don't know yet, we're still workingon it. But she said an unequivocal
"Yes"! She also said that PAWS will becommitting to paying medical bills for all FeLV cats they adopt out so as toencourage adoptions of FeLV cats.I tell you, it was hard to stop myself from bursting into tears. If this is true--and I won't really believe it till I see it--then this isfantastic news and I can hardly believe it. As you know (and for benefit ofnew listmembers) I had heard from 2 authoritative sources--one a PAWSadoption counsellor and the other the director of the Tree Houseshelter--that PAWS was not going to have an FeLV room. I intended to writethe owner to try and get her to change her mind. So when she called me,about Pookie, and I got a rare chance to speak to her directly, she said (asif it was a whole new idea) well, we do have 2 spare rooms, so one of thesecould be an FeLV room...And now it seems to be actually happening! She will have all your testimonials by now...I hope they are used in
the"education" program. Either way, I believe they helped tip the decision inthe right direction. Will keep you posted on any further developments when I get back to Chicagomid-June.Thanks to you all for your input! hugs, Kerry

If you contact the station they may be willing to provide a copy of the
segment to you (maybe for a fee). Most stations I have dealt with will.
You have to get to an editor or newsperson and keep at it. The first may
say no but the second may not.

Now that's a sign. Bailey doesn't do anything half way does he?? Talk
about validation! Even the weather person acknowledged your sign from
him. Isn't it great that you listened to that little voice that told
you to turn on the news? I wonder who else, and in what other ways, he
effected others watching this morning. Too bad you weren't taping, can
you get a copy somehow? Very cool and very reassuring.

I'm alittle speechless at the moment ... I sometimes turn the news

had sent a photo of my KC to use on the pet paws section they use on the
weather forecast. They told me they would email and let me know when it
would be used if they use it, so I don't watch the news every morning.

Just now on the weather forecast they showed a photo of the beach, it was
overcast and cloudy but in the clouds there was a VERY clear section on
the right that looked exactly like the outline of a cats face and even
more looks exactly like a photo I have of Bailey (a close up I took
several years ago), same tilt of his head, same white mark on the right
side of his face that made him look like he was always smiling. And the
weather forecaster remarked doesn't that look like a cats face, that's
when I could clearly see it. I'm going to try and find out when the
person that sent it in took it.

It looked like the photo in the link below, mostly just the face part ...
it gave me chills!

Try a phone call or two. It is harder to say no in person (visit the

  Nina,
I wrote to the weather station and asked if they could send me a copy,
probably not but it's worth a try. I grabbed my camera because they
showed it a second time which I didn't expect, but they never showed it a
third time so I didn't get it.

Mixing FeLv non FeLv

2006-05-12 Thread Pam Norman

I know that finally mixing FIV non FIV
kitties is FINALLY being accepted but I am wondering as to what you all here
think about mixing FeLv non FeLv kitties. My daughter adopted a
kitten years ago that was not tested for FeLv until she was about 3 months old.
When she was tested, it was positive. They already had another cat the two
had been together since little Juniper arrived, so essentially 3 months. Jonas
was tested he was negative. I believe he was given the vaccine then.
Juniper has since gone to the bridge Jonasis still healthy non
FeLv.

I know that there are many folks who do mix but I
would like to hear the feelings about it here.

Pam, I once got a whole load of FELV+ cats to Tad up here in Vermont from
TENNESSEE! It was hard work though to coordinate... I'm on about 50 different
transport groups. I try NOT to get involved in coordinating, because it's a huge

All that being said, I'm SO glad I got involved in your case with JuneAmy,

Re: Immunoregulin for Chelsea

2006-05-12 Thread ACALA PET ISSUES
Chelsea received 1/2 ml I-V injections of immunoregulin aprox every 4
days for about 3 1/2 weeks for a total of 6 doses. We're now cutting back
to once a week injections for another 3 weeks, at which time we'll do blood
work to determine how her anemia is doing. If she's in the normal range,
we'll probably continue with once a month immunoregulin injections for a few
more months. If Chelsea is still anemia, we'll stay on once a week
immunoregulin for a while longer.
Though she was diagnosed with severe, non to poorly regenerative anemia,
she's clearly been making red blood cells which I don't believe would have
happened without the IR treatments.
Really as anemic as Chelsea was, I was doubtful that she would respond to
the treatment at all but she seems to be doing very well and is certainly
enjoying life. We were lucky, Chelsea is a good patient and is very sweet
by nature. It isn't easy to give I-V injections to a cat due to their small
veins and it certainly isn't particularly easy on the cat either. I have
several other felv+ rescue kitties, a couple of which will not be good
candidates for IR treatment when they become symptomatic due to their
less-than-cooperative personalities. We'll continue to give Chelsea other
immune supportive supplements in addition to Immunoregulin and will hope for
her continual improvement.

Thanks for all your help, Deanne

Thank you for posting about your success with Chelsea. I'm so pleased
she's doing better!!

I'd like to know the specifics of your protocol/dosage too. Is she getting
the IR subq, or IV? A friend from the list that no longer posts (I'm sure
most of you remember Sally from San Jose) is having problems of unknown
origin with a couple of neg cats and I've been telling her about IR. Any
info you could post would be greatly appreciated.

Am getting ready to start one of my girls on that - my vet said .2cc per

I took

Re: A new story of Gurfunkle

2006-05-12 Thread felv

When Moogie first left me, I used to lay in bed and cry myself to sleep
every night. She was my bed buddy. Every night, I would get ready for bed, then
get in bed and call out "Mommy's going to bed, who's coming to bed with Mommy?!"
and Moogie would come right into the room, and jump up on the bed, and I would
let her under the covers, and she would snuggle up beside me and we slept
together. It was really hard at night for several months. Then I went back on
Prozac, and began to take Nyquil every night, so I could sleep, and to dull the
pain.

It gets better with time. You'll still break out in sobs when you hear
certain songs, or when you see a picture, or every time you dust his urn, etc,
but the days get better, and you can eventually go for longer periods of time
between breakdowns, and you'll have days where you'll feel guilty because you
didn't think of him until the end of the day. But you never forget, and it
always hurts.

I have one of Moogie's baby teeth. Actually, I have two of my cats' baby
teeth, I have Tigger's too. His is almost twice the size of hers, and it reminds
me how tiny and sickly she was her entire life. I have videos too, but I can't
watch them...

Re: URGENT-Bert needs HELP!! GOOD NEWS!!!!!

2006-05-12 Thread Nina

I hope you're right. Things do seem to be changing, of course, way to
slow for my taste. Everyone of us who cares makes a difference, it's
the ripple effect. I had to smile at your line about being a little
sad about Bert not coming to live with you, oh how I understand how you
feel! What a cutie he is! Long life and happiness to little Bert in
his new home.

Yes.. This is really good news... Maybe people are starting to
realize these guys still have some good life left and the more
people come on board with this the more pressure it will put
on the medical people to come up with a cure...

I am a little sad that Bert isn't coming here but it sounds like
he found a really good home and I don't really need another...

Re: Immunoregulin for Chelsea

2006-05-12 Thread Nina
Thanks Deanne, I'm archiving the info and sent a forward to Sally. She
lost her sweet baby Chrissy this afternoon, but the other kitty in
trouble seems to be improving. I sent her the IR I had in my fridge and
I'll let you know what happens if she decides to try it. I'm hoping
that the success that Cindy had with administering it subq is not a
fluke and that it will work for other kitties that stress out at the
vet's office. Maybe that would work for your less-than-cooperative
guys when/if the need arises.

Chelsea received 1/2 ml I-V injections of immunoregulin aprox every
4 days for about 3 1/2 weeks for a total of 6 doses. We're now
cutting back to once a week injections for another 3 weeks, at which
time we'll do blood work to determine how her anemia is doing. If
she's in the normal range, we'll probably continue with once a month
immunoregulin injections for a few more months. If Chelsea is still
anemia, we'll stay on once a week immunoregulin for a while longer.
Though she was diagnosed with severe, non to poorly regenerative
anemia, she's clearly been making red blood cells which I don't
believe would have happened without the IR treatments.
Really as anemic as Chelsea was, I was doubtful that she would respond
to the treatment at all but she seems to be doing very well and is
certainly enjoying life. We were lucky, Chelsea is a good patient and
is very sweet by nature. It isn't easy to give I-V injections to a
cat due to their small veins and it certainly isn't particularly easy
on the cat either. I have several other felv+ rescue kitties, a
couple of which will not be good candidates for IR treatment when they
become symptomatic due to their less-than-cooperative personalities.
We'll continue to give Chelsea other immune supportive supplements in
addition to Immunoregulin and will hope for her continual improvement.

Thanks for all your help, Deanne
