Hey
everyone,

I know it hasn't
been that long ago that I reported that we had lost our Miss Kitty to
FeLV.  Now, not even a month later we've lost Clack.  He was 12 years
old and I'm pretty sure he was negative.  He lived outside with his brother
Click.

He was acting a bit
abnormal yesterday and this morning.  I went out to give him some canned
food that he dearly loves and he ran off into the woods away from me.  When
I got home tonight, he was lying on his side under our van with his mouth open
panting.  I thought he was already gone, but he was still breathing.
I rushed him to the vet and they told us that he was not responding to the
oxygen, that he had a mass in his chest and that his pupils weren't responding
to light.  They recommended PTS since they didn't think he would make it
overnight.

This has happened so
suddenly.  I'm numb with shock.  Clack and his brother, Click,
arrived as small kittens when their mom showed up in our yard.  They
were all feral, but we managed to tame Mama Kitty and Click.  We were never
able to hold Clack or scratch behind his ears until tonight.  I held
him and told him that it was OK if he needed to go.  We're pretty sure that
he waited until we got home and made sure that he was some place we could see
him.  He could have just gone off into the woods to
die.

This is never easy.
We're having him cremated.  Now he's with his mother at Rainbow
Bridge.  She passed away a few years ago very suddenly.  Now Click is
left without his brother and Mama.

Could you please add
Clack to the Candlelight Service as a non positive?  He was a black kitty
with a white spot on his chest.

Thanks so much for
listening.  This group has been there for me a lot in the past 3 years
(since I discovered you all after we rescued Miss Kitty & her
kittens).

Re: Patches again...

2006-07-21 Thread Lernermichelle

Runny eyes can mean herpes or some other upper respiratory virus. 500 to
1,000 mg/day of Lysine (make sure pure Lysine with no additives) helps a lot
with this. If nose is stuffed up as well this can make them not eat. I would
look into powerful immune stimulants like Immuno-regulan (articles on
felineleukemia.org web page).

Patches again...

2006-07-21 Thread Diane Rosenfeldt

Hi,
it's me, Diane R., just signed on from my home account. ;-)

And
already with another question!!

Patches has fairly steadily had runny eyes -- in its liquid form
before it becomes eye boogers, it's clear but a very pale pink.  Is this a
symptom of something?   Today the eye boogers were worse than usual,
and he was very subdued.

He
has had less of an appetite than usual the past few days -- although our
perception of "normal" is somewhat skewed since he came to us half-starved and
full of parasites.  When his appetite started decreasing, we thought it
might be the Missing Link we had started to sprinkle in it, so we tried giving
him half a can with some sprinkles and then, hours later, the other half of the
can the next morning, without.  But then he wasn't finishing either
portion.  He had been freefeeding on crunchies fairly steadily, so we were
wondering if maybe his appetite had evened out after the first few days of
wanting any and all nourishment.  But of course we're also trying to beef
him up, so last night we tried a whole can of A/D and he wolfed it
down.

I
guess at this point we're bogged down in variables -- appetite evening out, not
liking the Missing Link, not liking the particular variety du jour, the recent
heat.  We're in kind of a bind because we don't feel we have time to "wait
and see" since if he truly is FeLV+, the runny eyes, the subduedness, the
lessened appetite might mean he's come down with something that needs
treating.

So,
has anybody here had experience with these kinds of symptoms in
combination?  Any input welcome.

Diane R.

Hi all, I had a call from the Indiana
lady/angel who took 12 positives from the NJ shelter that closed down last
year.
She needs a home for a 12 week
kitten, a Siamese mix, that has tested pos, and is being kept in a cage -- she
doesn't want to mix with her established
positives in case he can throw the FeLV off; and she won't mix him
with her negs in case they became infected. If anyone can help, please let me
know. Also please cross-post if poss.  Thanks. Kerry M.

I wanted to give a Ty update. He is a wild man, he has come out of his
shell and has just blossomed. Even my FIV boy, Peep, seems to put up with him
and lets Ty wrestle/box him without fighting/biting Ty away.

We now are guessing Ty’s age a little younger then first thought, he has so
much kitten still in him, we are thinking him to be under a year, we thought
about 18 months which I guess he still could be. I started to give him more
freedom, he goes out every morning and helps feed the chickens and runs the yard
before I put him away. Letting him outside that little bit has really lifted his
spirits, he is a street kid and wants to kind of stay that way but loves the
attention of the inside life.

His health has been wonderful, we will be having him retested in September.

karen,
the group here gave me suggestions when my kittens turned up felv+. i had
gotten 2 list's. 1 if i had to shop at a pet store such as petco and another
list if i could find a place that sold the brands. of course i cant find those
lsits right now.
i started feeding my group Innova Evo canned kitten food and after a few days
convinsed the last 2 to eat it. i also put out a little dry for them Nutra brand
kitten food. both are more expensive than the purina ive alwase fed cats i owned
in thepast but its worth it. their coats went from dull to glossy they are still
putitng on weight and healthy with no felv health related problems. sorry i cant
find that list for you. hopefully others here will chip in (they usually
do)  ohhh yea i have 8 .. yea 8 4 were finally tested

put all 8 down. i havent botherd to test the rest of them, figure they have it
or they dont. they are all staying with me either way. other than a tendency to
get colds and diarea while they were little, these guys are the healthiest bunch
of "sick" cats ive ever seen. they have wy too much energy and
creativity some days.

I'm just wondering what brand of food would be the best to feed

at the Petsmart website but didn't find anything specific.

Hi Maggie,
I don't have the beginning of this thread, but re throwing off FeLV, one
of my 5 positives has thrown it off. My vet who ran the test in his
office said there was no ambiguity--it's definite. He also said (you
guys will correct me if I or he has this wrong) that 1/3 of cats testing
positive throw it off. Hugs and good wishes to you and both your
furballs, Maggie~~ Kerry M.

Hi Maggie,

I'm sorry to hear about Izzy's positive test. Yes, it
still is possible (at any point in time really) to
throw off the virus. People have experienced their
cats throwing the virus off at just about any age.
Since you know they are both positive, I wouldn't
worry with all the testing. Maybe once a year just to
know. Or not. It really doesn't matter, imo. What
does matter is that they remain as stress-free as
possible and that they get a really good diet. No
grain in their food, which is most "commercial" foods,
including Science Diet. Cats don't process grains.
Also, supplements, like Lysine and/or vitamin C to
boost their immune systems will really help. I don't
know how much vit. C to administer, but a little more
research might get you that info. Or, you could post
a specific question, with the subject being about vit.
c dosage, and I bet you'll get lots of answers. Many
posters don't read all the posts due to lack of time,
but if you post a specific question, you'll probably
get a better response.

I hope this helps, and good luck with your furbabies!
Congratulations on Lucy's recovery!!!
:)

We now are guessing Ty’s age a little younger then first thought, he

started to give him more freedom, he goes out every morning and helps
feed the chickens and runs the yard before I put him away. Letting him

Thank you for the advice. My vet automatically gives fluids and uses laser surgery, which I think would help keep it less stressful for her. I'm going to talk to the vet next week about it.

Hey Wendy,

Sure thing! i'm about 45 minutes to 1 hr from Malvern, and go thru there every
now and then. I go to nearby Hot Springs quite a bit, and use a vet there
sometimes. She does a little bit of everything, nice to have around!

I enjoy Arkansas - tend to stay home with the multitude of kitties, but every
now and then when I go north/south/east/west, I just marvel at the multitude of
vistas there are. I love the lakes and trees, and always I enjoy the farming
communities and land immensely.

I went 4 hours north to my high school class reunion a couple of weeks ago - a
great touristy spot, Eureka Springs, like another world.

Glad you're moving here - let me know more, we'll have to get together.

Hey Maggie,

No suggestions on making going into heat easier. I
would spay. Make sure to tell the vet to use ISO gas,
and give her IV fluids before, during, and after
surgery. There is always a risk with surgery, but she
will probably be fine. Going into heat is stressful
on kitties.

Re: Our Clack is gone

2006-07-21 Thread elizamaggie

I'm so sorry for your loss - such a tough thing to lose two in one month! How wonderful that despite his feral nature he knew he could come to you for comfort.

I do have to say that I love their names, Click and Clack - we're big fans of Car Talk around here and I work around the corner from Dewey, Cheatham & Howe, their "attorney's" office.
-- Original message -- From: "Tim Lyons" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hey everyone,

I know it hasn't been that long ago that I reported that we had lost our Miss Kitty to FeLV.  Now, not even a month later we've lost Clack.  He was 12 years old and I'm pretty sure he was negative.  He lived outside with his brother Click.

He was acting a bit abnormal yesterday and this morning.  I went out to give him some canned food that he dearly loves and he ran off into the woods away from me.  When I got home tonight, he was lying on his side under our van with his mouth open panting.  I thought he was already gone, but he was still breathing.  I rushed him to the vet and they told us that he was not responding to the oxygen, that he had a mass in his chest and that his pupils weren't responding to light.  They recommended PTS since they didn't think he would make it overnight.

This has happened so suddenly.  I'm numb with shock.  Clack and his brother, Click, arrived as small kittens when their mom showed up in our yard.  They were all feral, but we managed to tame Mama Kitty and Click.  We were never able to hold Clack or scratch behind his ears until tonight.  I held him and told him that it was OK if he needed to go.  We're pretty sure that he waited until we got home and made sure that he was some place we could see him.  He could have just gone off into the woods to die.

This is never easy. We're having him cremated.  Now he's with his mother at Rainbow Bridge.  She passed away a few years ago very suddenly.  Now Click is left without his brother and Mama.

Could you please add Clack to the Candlelight Service as a non positive?  He was a black kitty with a white spot on his chest.

Thanks so much for listening.  This group has been there for me a lot in the past 3 years (since I discovered you all after we rescued Miss Kitty & her kittens).
