Emergency aid for vet bills...
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember a site where one can apply for assistance with vet bills Have someone who has been feeding a group of Katrina strays in MS and has one who turns out to be diabetic and needed emergency care. Does anyone remember the site Im referring to??? Christiane, Best Friends did a lot of Katrina rescue work; a friend who is librarian specializing in grants, says the Best Friends web-site has the best source of information on grants for animals (www.bestfriends.org). United Animal Nations (www.uan.org) sometimes helps with vet bills and another site I have saved is www.imom.org/fa/others.htm Here is my friend Liz's site: http://grants.library.wisc.edu/organizations/animals.html Bonnie in WI - Original Message - From: Chris [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sunday, July 23, 2006 1:15 am Subject: Emergency aid for vet bills... Apologies
Dear Group. (Especially Take Note Nina Kerry), I am so sorry that I have not participated much lately. Things seem to be getting more difficult, if you can imagine that! In fact, I "thought", well "tried to send not one, but two e-mails last night, only to discover that apparently they never went anywhere(Probably happened when I fell off chair last night, or I should say morning cause I was at PC for hours! Insomnia..what can I say about that, other than...I HATE IT!!!) You have all been so very kind with your thoughts and prayers. This is DEFINITE:LY the best group out there! (As Michelle wrote in an earlier e-mail...See? Parts of my memoryis drifting back. S-L-O-W-L-Y. Too slowly for me anyhow, but they say, "Patience is a virtue". and apparently I am NOT blessed with that virtue.) Anyway, I found out while going thru the TONS of mail waiting for me, that what was not covered by "exhausted" auto insurance WAS picked up by state.(Which makes NO sense, since I have been on SSDI and was told my monthly income was too large (ha!ha!) for state coverage). But, hey, I am not complaining - YET!! I also found out that Medic-Aid has 3 programs available in this state, and, since I was in hospital at time, did not get to choose the one I wanted, so they put me in one.(The one that MOST of my specialists do not participate in!!) I had a couple of Dr. appts. this week, and news is NOT great. (Suppose it could be worse though). My spleen was ruptured at time of accident. Then, repaired supposedly. Probably was, but I have been "trying" to do too much. Anyway, I have lost MORE weight. Not a good thing when I was a size 5, and, now size 3's slide right off. (Hell, I lost TWO pounds overnight!) I also have been having intense, sharp, pains on left side, could be that area. I am NOT hungry, in fact, I usually feel "full". It's a chore to eat. They had me on some "stomach medicine" (what nurses told me in hosp)., and when I asked, they said it was for acid reflux, heartburn, the like. Never had that problem, then or now, so I did not get Rx. filled when released. (Especially, since I had to pay, and it was over $130.00). I found out that it is "more" of a medicine to prevent problems with digestive tract and that is probably WHY it was Rx'ed. Also found out that I should have been referred to internal medicine for post surgery follow up. Dr. thinks that eiiher my spleen did not heal correctly, or I have additional internal injuries, that they did not diagnose at time! LOVELY!!! And, get this - because that specialist does not participate in plan I was assigned to, pharmacy will NOT fill that Rx.!! (OR, the one for my new anti-depressant either, but that's a whole other story!) I was "fortunate enough" to be able to get in to see a Dr. Monday morning, who WILL write scripts AND the referal for Bone Dr. I see Monday afternoon. (Shoulder clavicle did NOT heal right either. The clavicle was protruding thru my skin, so they just "stuck" it back in!. I imagine they must do all sorts of "quick, easy fixes" when patient is not expected to live! But, damn, I lived, and now I am miserable! Who's to blame, really?) As far as my vision, it is getting worse. Supposedly due to nerve damage. When I called to see if I could get in any earlier, they told me that I had to call THEM for cancellations! Now I always thought the Dr. was to keep a list for cancellations. At least that's how it was when I was working for a Dr. Beats me...(In fact, reason I was on PC so very long yesterday was to "try" to correct all my errors...now, I am not going to evn try...Hey, I AM brain damaged, should be expected, right? My attempt at humor). Truthfully, I have been SO depressed, I am not up to talking on phone. (Who knows, it just might be the potion I need, but, I am just NOT up to it with all the news I just got). But Kerry, you asked about sending me a "REAL" card, and that would be something I'd like very much. (Just don't get too mushy). So, here's the info" Patricia E. Shiflett 23 Baltimore Street Box 244 Codorus, Pa. 17311 Mind you, the MOST important part of that address is the BOX number!!! (Don't ask me why though!) This is a very small town, (POST OFFICE ONLY!!!), and even though they make it their business to know ALL the residents,, heaven forbid if the wrong box number is on the envelope. (Can't figure that out either cause they know who lives where and WHAT bo number! They even RETURNED a b-day card to my (elderly) mother cause she "forgot" to include Box # - Go fighure...Just finally UNDERSTANDING that "Go postal" comment...Uh, Yeppers, I am a wee bit slow at times, So all, please forgive my lapse of communication, you ALL have been on my mind, I do try to keep updated with posts, but with my "brain" things tend to get diffficult, but I want you ALL to know you have been on my mind,, VERYY IMPT.!!! Pleases forgive all the errers. It is 7:00 AM * I
Re: Apologies
Dear Patti, Certainly no apologies are needed. I can hear just how utterly tired of fighting you are right now and it breaks my heart. Prayers going out to you. When it rains, it pours, right? The only thing I can tell you is that even if it gets worse from here, it will eventually get better at some point. That's the cyclical way of life. You can come here anytime and get prayers and support from us. And don't lose hope! Having depression on top of all the medical issues you are dealing with is like a double whammy, so your anti-depressants are so important (if they are the right ones and right dosage). Insomnia can also drive a person crazy and elevate the depression severly. Are you able to take anything for it? Your rest is of highest priority. It's certainly a blessing that the rest of your medical bills were covered! That's a great thing. Just think if you were having to look at thousands in medical bills ON TOP of what you are already going through?! It's enough to send someone over the top. My husband and I still have a couple of thousand in medical bills to pay for my foot surgery, which isn't much, but after our A/C went out Wednesday and we were without heat for 3 days, it now seems a lot more! lol. It was 92 degrees in our house and it was awful! My poor CRF kitty needed extra fluids; she got really dehydrated b/c she wouldn't drink. Luckily, we got it fixed and didn't lose any furbabies or fishies in the process. What are they going to do about your spleen now? Are they going to do surgery or wait and see if it heals on it's own? Please keep us posted. And there will come a day when you will look back on all this and be glad you kept fighting to feel better. :) Wendy __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: Introducing Patches, and me :-)
Welcome to the group. I'm a bit behind on email, so I know this is a late reply. Mats, if left to fester on a cat (or dog, for that matter), even once removed, cause excessive skin irritation, because all the hair that formed the mat was pulling the skin under it into it's center. Sometimes even sores develop under severe mats, and I've even heard of those mat sores developing into maggot infested infected sores. So, yes, mats are severe health issues. It's likely that even though the mats are removed now, he still has residual irritation to his skin, which all the pulling of grooming could have made even worse. I ALWAYS do full body shaves on cats with mats, it's inhumane do just trying to comb them out, plus, if you do a full close shave (really short, but not bald), you can better see the skin, to treat any sores or irritated patches. At this point, I'd highly recommend a good BATH, using a mild shampoo designed for skin irritations. Any oatmeal cat shampoo would be good. It's likely he's never been bathed before, so I advise a long sleeved thick flannel shirt, good fitting suede gloves, and thick sturdy jeans. The ideal thing is an enclosed shower with a sliding door, then you can just take yourself AND the cat into the shower is you can rig up a hose somehow from the faucet. If he freaks out, just let him go, and wait for him to calm down (or give up), he can't go anywhere because the shower door is shut. Otherwise, I'd use the kitchen sick. Use a sturdy dog collar (not a safety cat collar), and tie a section of string from the sink strainer (the one built into the drain hole), and make it about 1 foot long. Tie the other end to his collar. This way he cannot escape the sink. It needs to be short enough that he can't get his body out over the edge and hang himself. Clear all items from the counter or anywhere within 3 feet of the sink (that includes hanging spoons, pots, pans, etc that he might pull down from above). If your sink has a hand sprayer, that's better, just use the sprayer, starting from his front feet, and working your way up, and then back, but if not, just fill the sink up about 4 inches and use a plastic cup to pour the water over the cat. If you do it that way, you'll need to drain and refill the sink at least twice with clean rinse water to be sure he's well rinsed. Cats repell water, so you'll need to wet him down, then put a bit of shampoo on him, rub it in, and then wet down more, the shampoo allows the water to get past the cat's natural water repellant coat. Scratches are expected, just DON'T get bitten, cat bites are dangerous, so wear the gloves and long shirt, and be aware of where his teeth are at all times. yes, the gloves will be wet, and soggy and hard to deal with, but better than being bitten. If he's being good, and you are sure he's calm enough, you can remove them once you get going good. A helper helps a lot, if the cat tries to throw himself out of the sink, your helper can help get him back in, or hold him down. Trust me, any way you do it at home will be much gentler than if he had it done at the vet's or a groomer's shop. Groomers are very rough with the pets, never trust one. If you decide to go that route, INSIST that you be in the back and watching the entire time, if they wont allow it, then don't use that shop. Now, on to the supplements. Missing Link is a good general supplement. If you mix it in with some very tasty canned cat food, he should eat it. Mine never seem to notice it when mixed in with a can of fancy feast. You might also want to consider extra vitamin C, and possibly Interferon-A, which you would have to get through your vet, or online, with your vet's prescription. There's more info about the many experimental supplements and treatments for FELV on the list webpage too, be sure to check them out. Here's that webpage: http://www.felineleukemia.org/treatmnt.html If he's skinny, Nutri-Cal (or Vita-Cal, the generic equalivant) is a good high calorie supplement, most cats will lick it from the tube: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=3177N=2002+113617 There are also several liquid diets for supplementing for skinny cats: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=14075N=2002+113617 http://www.allivet.com/Rebound-Feline-Liquid-Diet-p/12070.htm https://secure.petag.com/products_details.asp?ItemID=1666CategoryID=2SubCategoryID=13(you can buy this one at JeffersPet at: http://www.jefferspet.com/ssc/products.asp?CID=0area=catdept_id=166) http://www.southernagriculture.com/southag/product.asp?dept_id=3028pf_id=PABBFKMPKIBH A good cat food is the best place to start though. Re: groundhog
Yeah, he did have a mound of dirt. See, what happened was: He had dug his den out under our old propane tank, so the entrance was covered because it was under the tank. We had a new tank put in at a different location, and then we had the old tank removed. This left a bare patch of ground with a big gaping groundhog mound and den. SO... I took a garden rake, and I leveled out the mound as best I could, carefully avoiding his hole, then I made the bottomless (well it's actually 3-sided with a saltbox roof) house, and I sat that down over the hole, then I kinda pressed it down into the loose soil, and then I re-leveled around the house. I then dug out a rectangle in the front of his house, and set in a masonry brick as a concrete "patio". He likes to stretch out on his new patio, but no, I've never seen him up on the roof of the house. I don't think he's quite that athletic, to be honest, he's fat and has pretty short legs, and the roof is over a foot off the ground. I do have video of him on his patio, I'm not sure how good the quality will be once I upload it as a still image though. I need to put some grass seed out on the bare ground around his house, when it rains, the dirt splatters up on the walls of the house, it looks pretty filthy now. And she has not used their litter pans or shared their food or water. Is there still a chance she passed the disease? I was wondering." No. No chance. FELV is spread through the saliva (and possibly other bodily fluids), and once it dries, it dies, instantly. If she hasn't been mutually grooming, and hasn't shared any bowls or litterboxes, then it's physically impossible for her to have spread the virus to the other cats. Relax, you've done everything right! The fact is, all your other cats are adults anyways, so their chances of getting the FELV from her are slim to none to begin with, even if they french kiss each other. Re: Apologies
Try drinking some Ensure, or any other drink type supplement, like Boost. That way you can get some calories into yourself without having to actually burn any with chewing (and if you're not hungry, I can imagine that eating is very bothersome indeed!) Smoothies are good too, you can put all kinds of fruit and veggies into a blender with either milk or juice (fruit, V-8, or even chicken, veggie, or beef broth), and drink it! You don't have to "eat" so much, you just have to keep getting good nutrition into yourself however you can manage it. Try to get that depression prescription filled, sometimes it takes over a month to feel any effects from those types of meds, so the sooner you start, the better. We will be here for you, don't worry about us! Don't push yourself too hard just to check in with the group, we will still be here when you feel better! I'm sending you a "real" card too! I think that's a GREAT idea! Take care of yourself and get better soon Patti! Phaewryn PS, I used a big bold font so hopefully you don't have to strain to read this! Thank you: Emergency aid for vet bills...
Thank you all I sent all the links on. There are a handful of volunteers in the New Orleans area and on the MS coast who try very hard to feed/water strays that they know were previously owned. As people come back, they are amazed to find their cats alive! Every day, the feeders try to look trap cats that escaped and whose owners are looking for. Just yesterday they got one cat that everyone had thought had died! The stray population is really getting pretty overwhelmingkitten season, and all Anyway, vetting is a big problem and most of the feeders, particularly in MS, take that on their own so any possible help is always helpful As for the cat in questionwell, poor Rusty was not doing well late last night. He wasnt eating and though he seemed fairly comfortable and purring away, we know that for a diabetic cat, not eating is not good Chris [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, July 23, 2006 10:51 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: Emergency aid for vet bills...
