I was not aware of your Georgia going astray. [These eyes, BLAH!!! NOT

Cat on immunoregulin

2007-05-10 Thread Nazleen Rahmat

Hi All,

I brought my cat in for an ultrasound yesterday to check on his kidneys and
his stomach. Lately, he's not been eating very much and he has been having
bad constipation. He's had constipation his whole life - he'll normallly
have to run around the house for a while before he'll make a trip to his
liter tray to poop.

Anyways, the vet found a suspicious looking lump in his small intestine. He
thinks it could be lymphoma. He said to not do a biopsy as yet as he would
rather treat him to build up his immune system to see if he'll respond to
this. The prognosis given on his kidneys is fair, my vet says Abu (that's my
sweetheart's name) can live for many years with his kidneys being the way
they are. He gave Abu a steroid and immunoregulin injection yesterday and
I'm to follow up giving him this twice a week on top of some herbal
remedies. He'll also start Abu on Silver Collagen soon.

Can anyone help me explain what could be happening? I'm so worried I don't
know what to do now. He was eating well yesterday and he's eating today.
He's generally still a very happy cat.

Thanks
Leen and Abu

I almost lost one of my cats using Advantage,,
She was 3 years old went into a semi-coma Was hospitalized for over
3 weeks.
Still never found out why. Thought I would lose her. I was frantic,
didn't know just what the problem was
Thank heavens she finally came around -after a really long time.
I will NEVER use it again!
Now use Frontline - NO problems at all...
Still can't figure what the problem was. Either could vet.

Sickly kitties give more love.

I hope everyone opens their heart to a sickly kitty and gives it the best life
possible.

Sickly kitties need more love, more time, more attention, and more devotion,
but they give it all back to you. Sickly kitties snuggle up under your covers
at night because they have a hard time staying warm on their own. Sickly
kitties trust you 100%, because sickly kitties know that you crawl on your
hands and knees on the way to the toilet in the middle of the night just so you
don't step on the sickly kitty stretched across the hall way floor that doesn't
have enough energy (or desire) to move out of your way. Sickly kitties know
that if suddenly their food begins to taste bad and they don't want to eat it
any more, you will go to the grocery store and buy them a carton of light cream
and some ham lunch meat. Sickly kitties know that sudden trips to the vet to
get rehydrated because mom had to be at work for 8 hours and couldn't be home
to force feed water 3 cc's at a time are the norm, and no work schedule is more
important than rehydrating the sickly kitty. Sickly
kitties know that even though they feel really bad, in a few days mom will
make it all better again, and they can enjoy a few more weeks under the covers
with mom at night, a few more weeks walking across mom's keyboard on the
weekends. Sickly kitties know that mom never lies, mom never ignores them, and
mom never puts them in second place. In the end, sickly kitties know that mom
will be there and hold them and tell them everything is OK, and that it's OK to
go to sleep, and as they close their eyes and let go, sickly kitties know that
mom loves them, and always will, and mom knows the love is a mutual feeling.

Sure, it hurts, but I get a lot in return for my efforts, it makes me feel
good inside, and that's the best feeling in the world. I have no regrets. Life
is a roller coaster of emotion, you might as well be in the front seat where
the view is good, and the wind is in your face.

I'm so sorry to hear about the problems your baby Abu is having. Immunoregulin
is supposed to be a good immune system booster. I'm impressed with your vet.

If I had a can that was constipated, I'd probably start sub-q fluids, and/or
give 1 cc or so of daily lactulose. Have had older cats with that problem, not

Same here...we have a large group here that sends kitties to a hospice but do
not euthanize. Felv+ and Fiv+ (no confirmatory tests) are mixed

offers free TNR surgeries so they do a lot for controlling the populationif
not for them, the cats won't be fixed otherwise and will indeed be suffering.

Re: Vet of the Year (uplifting story)/Marissa

2007-05-10 Thread PEC2851
Dear Marissa,
I just wanted to tell you/let you know from my own (horrific)
experience[s], NEVER give up or lose hope...
My dear, old, ancient Puma had fallen out a window [ground level, rotten
window locks ] and was gone for what seemed like forever. I did all the
same things [w/out a compassionate vet that is ] and was heartbroken. About

to give up sadly BUT - one VERY rainy night, I heard this pitiful
cry... And guess what? It was my Puma Now mind you, it was a rainy
spring,
many other rainy days/nights.. I can't remember just what drew me out
to porch that night, but, was I ever glad, whatever the reason.. Poor
old man [and he was old , I rescued him as senior - he's ancient now], was
soaked, hungry, you name it. I (we) were in heaven And, where I
lived at time, well, he was faced w/ many difficulties - predators
included
Thank heavens [after a thorough vet check], he was fine!!! And, I got rid of
that window!
And, after my MVA, NO ONE was tending to my ferals... (Bart Charity among
others). When I [finally] got home, after a very LONG hospitalization,
there was NO sight of them I was devastated
But cats are so smart. Smarter than most people I must add.
They came back! I was ecstatic, to say the least.. Charity had been
fully vetted prior, not so Bart. But I refused to give up on him,
probably the meanest, trap savvy feral I've ever encountered (Had me in
ER!!!
But that was ok)
Sadly, poor 'ole Bart had to be PTS, after Charity led me to him.. He
was so very sick.. But, he actually turned into a love-muffin. I think
he knew I was there to help him..
And Charity, well, she's now here (in house) with me. Another love-muffin
[w/ me only}. And she had me in ER many times prior..
It's no wonder I really believe cats are so smart...
So, please, don't give up. MIRACLES DO HAPPEN
And, I also love my vet.. With Puma's diagnosis [(dry) FIP toxo],
he's just doing so well. Other than having Kitty-Alzheimers Guess it
comes
with age
Probably most other vets would have suggested PTS - not mine!!! ( He also
tends my ferals).
So, please, don't give up And know you Georgia will be remain in my
prayers..
Hugs,
Patti her gang (Includes Puma Charity)

Re: Cat on immunoregulin

2007-05-10 Thread Belinda
Not to scare you but if your cat does have lymphoma and it is the
fast growing agressive lymphoma he won't live long enough to build up
his immune system. My Skeeter was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1992, back
then vets (at least mine) didn't tell you slow or fast or what the
difference was but his was apparently fast, from the day of diagnosis to
the day I had to let him go was 5 days, thats how fast it took him.

Re: Cat on immunoregulin

2007-05-10 Thread Belinda
I see your also on the feline lymphoma list, me too, my Buddie had
cancer in 2003, lost her in 2004 about a year later, hers was a slow
growing cancer. We tried chemo and prednisolone, she wasn't eating well
on the chemo and I freaked out and stopped it (if I had it to do over
again I wouldn't stop it), between the 3 chemo treatments she got and
the continued prednisolone she lived just over a year after diagnosis.
Prednisolone alone is an option for slow growing but it will only give
you a few months. With the more aggressive faster growing cancer, you
have to do chemo and quickly, prednisolone alone is not going do any
good, that's why it's important to find out what kind of cancer.

If you do decide to see an oncologist or have your vet consult with one,
you will be surprised how well most kitties tolerate chemo, many do get
nauseated for the first 2 or 3 treatments and their appetite may not be
as good, BUT as soon as the chemo is killing off the cancer cells most
cats are pretty much back to their normal selves if they achieve
remission. I have only seen a very few cats not go into remission and I
honestly believe most of those are because the vets gave up to quickly.
Sometimes you have to try more than on or the standard protocol. Take a
look at Theresa's Jean Luc's case study, he went through 2 different
protocols and got 2 good quality years of life because of it. He also
had continuous anemia and kidney problems and they were all kept stable
for the 2 years. Here is his story if you'd like to look at it:

http://felinelymphomacaregivers.org/jeanluc.html

Some of the kitties in the group are in remission of 2, 3 years and even
longer.

Zithromax-dosage

2007-05-10 Thread Gloria Lane
With all the discussion of Zithromax - What's the dosage of Zithromax
for kittens?

I got some Zithromax for a 5 week old kitten (from the pound with
URI) the other day and the directions are to give 1ml (2.5 mg) once
daily for 14 days. The kitten kind of got sluggish for a couple of
hours after the first two days and doses. I decided I wasn't gonna
do that, that the dosage isn't right. HOwever, the eye is getting
better, btw!!!

I read at network.bestfriends.org/Library/Download.aspx?d=41 that
the dosage is 5 mg of drug for every 2.2 pounds of cat or 2.3 mg per
pound of cat . I'm thinking a better dosage might be to cut back to .
5ml daily...

I also noticed at various sites on the web that there are different
protocols for administering. This protocol I'm using is daily for
14 days. Some say just one dose, one day. Some are dosing for 3
days, then repeat in a week or so.

Any thoughts on that?

Thanks!

3 lb - ..4 cc
4 lb - .5 cc
5 lb - .6 cc
10 lb 1.0 cc

I have had cats in the past he has prescribed once every other day for
3 doses..then repeat in a week.

These kittens are every 48 hours.

Hey Marissa,

Love this story about your vet! She sounds like a
wonderful person. I so hope your Georgia is able to
come home soon! Please keep us posted Marissa.

Hi all! I just thought you might like to hear an
uplifting story about a PHENOMINAL vet (seems we get
 to hear a lot about not-so-good vets...thought I'd
share a good story). It's kinda long, but trust
 me...it's worth the read!

You all may remember that I found a new vet after
Slinky had his transfusion and the vet who did it
wouldn't try anything else. I had mentioned then
that Dr. Garrison read all the research I sent her
on IR and did her own research, etc. When I brought
Mouse in a couple weeks ago, I noticed that she
talks to him before doing anything, she knew all
about CH and herpes (he has herpes) and was
supportive of Lysine therapy for the herpes. I left
the appointment wishing I could go see her every
day! lol She even supported my feeding raw (if it's
done right)...and she's an ALLOPATHIC vet!!! So I
was already thinking she was amazing!!

As you read this, keep in mind that I've seen Dr.
G THREE TIMES - twice with Slinky (including pts)
and once with Mouse. It's not like I've been her
 customer for years or something.

Here's the sad part of the story: I think many if
not all of you heard that on Monday night my new
baby Georgia got out of her harness in a park near
my house and took off. She's been hiding out in a
dense forest in the park and, while I've spotted her
a couple times, I have not been able to get her back
yet. It has been heartbreaking and making me CRAZY
(esp. after losing my baby Slinky so recently).

   Here's the good part:
When Georgia took off, one of the first things I
did was call Dr. Garrison to see if she had any
suggestions or resources or anything. She took a
description, said they'd keep an eye out, and gave
 me some good ideas.

Yesterday afternoon SHE CALLED ME to ask if I had
seen her yet!!! I thought that in and of itself was
pretty awesome. Then she OFFERED TO COME OUT AND
HELP ME LOOK FOR HER AFTER SHE GOT OFF WORK AT
7! I could NOT believe it She
said to call her if she hadn't turned up by shortly
before 7. When I called her she asked if I needed
any supplies and I suggested she bring some a/d
since it's smelly and Georgia has eaten it for me.

She had already mapquested the park, knew how to
get there, etc. (she didn't know where it was the
first night I called her). She came out and met me
at the park with 2 cans of A/D...and wouldn't let me
pay her for them! I had said that it would be
helpful just to have someone there to help me
strategize about where to put things, etc. Not only
did she do that, but she spent the next hour or more
tromping through the DENSE forest full of thorny
vines and brambles trying to flush Georgia out and
 scare her toward me.

She kept tromping through and looking while I went
to meet a rescuer who was bringing me a trap at the
entrance to the park. She watched while the rescuer
showed me how to set it - with absolutely no
pretense of I'm a vet and I know everything or
anything like that. In fact, she ended up being
like the good friend you take to an important
 doctor's appointment...she asked really great
questions that, in sleep-deprived and stressed out
 state, I wasn't thinking of!

At this point it was dusk and she was going to
head out, but I planned to sit out there for a while
and see if I could spot Georgia. Dr. G asked if I'd
had dinner...and then went to McDonalds and brought
dinner back to me She even walked the
long way around the park so she could check out the
nearby houses and see if she could see Georgia

When she came back with my food, she said she was
going to the natural pet food store (where the owner
is my friend and had recommended Dr. G to me) today
and she could drop off flyers there AND since the
humane society was just down the street, she'd go
there and see if they had Georgia and leave flyers
 there as well!

While I was typing this just now, she called again
for an update! She said she left flyers at the food
store and went by the shelter but that, oddly,
they're closed on Wednesdays! So she said she'd GO
BACK TOMORROW on her lunch break just on the off
chance that she's there! She'll leave flyers
with them as well. Her help and support has done SO
MUCH to lift my spirits in this horrible time!

I was already wanting to nominate her for vet of
the year BEFORE all this And now I'm just
totally stunned!! I've never heard of a vet going
this far above and beyond the call of duty! When I
told her she's the best vet in the universe, she
said, well I don't know about that but I have lost
enough animals to know how stressful it is. She's
 really

Deana,

I'm so glad that you've found this wonderful group!
You are wise to find another vet; one more educated on
FeLV. After all, these kittens may not even be pos,
and even if they test pos later on, they still have a
40% chance to sero-convert and be negative. So keep
fighting the good fight. Bless you for caring for
these furbabies like you are.

I will never know if the mama cat was beyond

The most important item on the list was this test.

Hi guys,

Thanks so much for the replies. Please send us your prayers. Abu finished up
all his food yesterday. I was sooo happy!

I've to give him his jab tomorrow and I'm super frightened!

I have had a little experience with immunoregulin.
The vet gave it to my Smokey because he kept on
running a very high fever. It seemed to help him. I
don't know anything about the other meds. Sorry. I
hope he starts feeling better and that he doesn't have
lymphoma.

 had any experience with
 the above meds?

 Thanks.

I don't have anything on the kidneys for you, I do
have a warning about the steroid shots...watch for
diabetic symptoms because they have been known to
cause it...more drinking, more peeing, weight
 loss...I
have 2 cats with Diabetes and am a member of a
 message
board and I can't tell you how many cats contracted
 it
from steroid shots...so just be careful...

I brought my cat in for an ultrasound yesterday
 to
   check on his kidneys and

 much

bad constipation. He's had constipation his
 whole
   life - he'll normallly
have to run around the house for a while before
he'll make a trip to his
   liter tray to poop.

Anyways, the vet found a suspicious looking lump
 in
   his small intestine. He
thinks it could be lymphoma. He said to not do a
biopsy as yet as he would
rather treat him to build up his immune system
 to
   see if he'll respond to
this. The prognosis given on his kidneys is
 fair, my
   vet says Abu (that's my
sweetheart's name) can live for many years with
 his

they are. He gave Abu a steroid and
 immunoregulin
   injection yesterday and
I'm to follow up giving him this twice a week on
 top
   of some herbal
remedies. He'll also start Abu on Silver
 Collagen
   soon.

Can anyone help me explain what could be
 happening?
   I'm so worried I don't
know what to do now. He was eating well
 yesterday
   and he's eating today.
He's generally still a very happy cat.

   Thanks

Re: Double Positive in NY (altered F, approx. 1 y/o)

2007-05-10 Thread Tad Burnett

Hi Jeni and Pat
If you think this cat won't take more than average acclimation time I
can take

her at any time when ever its good time at your end...
I have a smaller cage that is set up and empty right now and so long as
she doesn't have to

stay in it for a long time she should be fine...
If she is healthy and not too aggressive..

The siamese that I am working with probably was a breeder and had lived
in a cage all his
life until he was dumped... He is very happy in his cage but when I let
him out he hides and
won't come out to eat, etc. so I am guessing he will have the big cage
for a long while...

My cats here all seem to except new comers with no problem and if your
cat has been with

other cats before there should be no problem with doing this any time
And Jeni... where we met before with Luvy and Thurston would be great if
we could do that

again

Let me know what you think

limited me to
three cats to keep. As long as she has a definate place to go I
could take
her in and she could hang out in a play cage (or bathroom
depending on how
she is, as long as she isnt a fighter she could hang out in the
play cage)
at first and see how she is with my cats (but what if she doesnt like
cats?...what then?) Let me know if that would be helpful, I drive
past
queens and work in long island and could pick up the kitty, just
as long as
she has a forever home and unfortunately it can not be mine. Let
me know if
that helps.

I don't think getting to Albany would be a problem. I'm also
waiting for
some confirmation results. I guess we could board her for a few
days/week
if needed. Not sure of her social status (sounds funny). I'll have
to find

Maybe she could help... Hi Jeni.. if you are there...

I live near Rutland Vermont.. About 60 miles north of Albany...

Also this cat would have to easily adjust to my other pos. cats..

Re: Cat on immunoregulin - fear of injections

2007-05-10 Thread Nina

Nazleen,
I understand how you feel about not wanting to give your little
sweetheart injections. It won't help him one little bit to give in to
your fear about it. Just put on your nurses hat and detach yourself
from the discomfort of it as best you can. Approach it and Abu with a
positive, loving and purposeful manner, you are doing this to help him,
and the calmer and more matter-of-fact you are about it the sooner it
will be over. Have something yummy like some tuna or baby food ready to
go. You may even want to give him something to eat while you are giving
him the shot. Sometimes when they are distracted, they don't even feel
it. My dentist pinches my opposite cheek when he gives me novocaine to
distract me, even though I know what he's doing, it still helps. Tell
Abu what you are doing is going to help him get better and to trust
you. Have everything prepared before you pick him up. If you can get
someone to hold him from squirming out of your grip, esp the first time,
all the better. 1,2,3, you're done! Medicate him in the same place
each time, (I use the kitchen counters because they're not suppose to be
up there anyway, if they develop an unpleasant association with the
counter, it's better than someplace we usually cuddle together.

I have learned through experience that the fear of the medication is far
worse than the medicating itself. You'll see if you have to give him
shots on a regular basis that he will begin to be much calmer in time
because he knows what to expect. Take the fear out of it for yourself
and you'll take the fear out of it for him.

Prayers and blessings,
Nina

Re: question on test result

2007-05-10 Thread Gina WN
My Pippin was a slight positive on the ELISA at six weeks of age and came up
negative on the IFA five months later. The vet thinks it was a false positive.
But, it's possible Pippin could have thrown the virus.

positive with the snap test we then always do the test that is sent out of the
office.

I am glad to hear that you are looking for another vet. Who is she to get

Here is the next bit of info on my situation - My husband went by the vet
office to pay the bill for the service provided on the stray mama that died

The vet was not at all happy that we were not bringing the kittens to her to be
put to sleep - since she is confident they are all positve and will die. (she
has never seen them)

The vet now says the first test on the dying mother was slightly postive so
she ran it again and it was More positive. Is there such thing as slightly
positive or is it just yes or no?

I will never know if the mama cat was beyond treatment for sure, but I do know
that the test was done about 4 hours after I left her there and no treatment or
exam was done before that.
The most important item on the list was this test.

We are looking for another vet.

Deana
