Not sure about cosequin for cats, but it's been around for years helping
horses. It's one of the most popular supplements for horses out there.? I use
Recover EQ for my horses because they have other issues, but many of my horse
friends have used?cosequin for years and swear by it. Kathryn

I think the cosequin is supposed to help with phosphorous or potassium or
something like that. Mine are pink and white too.? I dont know what the liver
values are, but I listed everything that was out of range.? Bob is eating well
and?his weight?is fine, ?but he HATES getting fluids.? He will take his norvasc
in a pill pocket but he hates taking the cosequin because it's too big for one
of those and I have to pill him.

?

I checked out the crf site Beth sent and I'm going to look at methods of giving
fluids and see if I can't figure out a better way to give them that will work.?
I normally can barely get 50 in him at a time, and quite frankly have given up
on them until I felt like he really needed them to get by. :(

Belinda Sauro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

??? Hi Tonya,
? Lysine as far as I know isn't going to hurt his kidney's, never heard that
Cosquin helps them, Fred gets this for his arthritis too.? He gets the pink and
white capsules, my vet said I could go with 1 or 2 a day depending on how
Fred's arthritis seemed to be.? He currently get 1 because he gets so much
stuff now already, that seems to be enough for him.? They really need to be
given everyday though, they take up to 6 weeks to make a difference.? I've
never seen a BUN that low if it is correct, what are his liver values like?

Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) - Urea, which is normally excreted by the kidney, is
a by-product of protein metabolism.

High levels of BUN may be the result of a high protein diet, dehydration,
ulcers in the digestive tract, kidney disease, or blockage of the normal flow
of urine (from a crystal or mucus plug, for example).

Low BUN levels can result from a low protein diet or liver disease.

I wouldn't worry so much about the low protein diet, my vet said she didn't get
them on that until the end stages when they were a lot worse than Bob is, Fred
doesn't eat that stuff and he does fine.? He eats Fancy Feast, home cooked or
baby food with supplements.? He has been CRF for over 2 years now and his last
blood work like I said was really good, almost normal.? Mainly you want to keep
the phosphorus under 6, mid 4's if good and the potassium solidly in the mid to
high 4's.? Low potassium can cause back leg muscle weakness and isn't good for
the heart.? I agree that 100cc of fluid a week is not going to do much good.?
If Bob is dehydrated I would give him between 50 and 100cc a day, if he isn't
he doesn't need any fluids.? Fred even when his numbers are low is dehydrated
and needs 100cc a day.

Fred has lost pretty much all the muscle in both back legs now, he still gets
around OK just can't use them to scratch or anything else.? He is starting to
lose a bit of weight so I have to really keep on him to eat, he is getting lazy
and if the food is not right there in front of him he will go without, so I
have to remember to make sure he has food wherever he is laying.

It's almost time for more blood work, kind of afraid of what it is going to say
though, it was really good last time, so I hope it is still good.

Thank you everyone for your kind words regarding Smokey. At least I know the
sweet little guy is not suffering. Just about everytime I?think about me
cleaning his mouth it? makes me cry a little, even right now. I'm way to soft
were animals are concerned. I even worry about my pet squirrel, Charlie. Well,
he's not really a pet, I just feed him and he's becoming really friendly. I
take care of a stray cat named fi fi. (Long story how she got that name).
Yesterday when I first saw her she came trotting up to me, happy to see me.
She's very cute and I must say she really made me feel better. She currently
lives at my mother's house, (she's?now an?indoor cat and loves it) but there
will come a time when she will come with either me or my sister. Right now she
is a true blessing and belongs were she is. Thanks again, Kathryn

I am so sorry to have to write this. We lost our sweet little Smokey cat. When
I took him to my vet before we left on vacation she told us that the sores in
his mouth were caused from the virus and that he was suffering. She said? there
wasn't anything that could be done. I just couldn't believe it because I
really?thought he was doing so much better and that the sores were from herpes,
which I explained to her. She said no, sometimes these sores are caused from
the decease and that he was in great pain. Every time I think about the times
that I?cleaned his little mouth it breaks my heart because I now know how much
I was hurting him. I was as gentle as I could be but I thought I needed to keep
the sores doctored and?I really didn't realize how much pain he was in. Stupid
me, I thought I was helping him and that he was getting better.

After some time goes by, I plan on going to a rescue facility and adopting a
cat. I will try to get a little cat that has been passed by, maybe a little
older one, I don't really know, I figure I will know when I see him/her. Thank
you for all the information and support. You all were a great source of
information and support.

Sincerely,
Kathryn

Kathryn, you can buy it as a pill from a drug store and maybe in a capsule.? I
started with 500 mg caplets and they were tough to crush.? I ended up buying
the powder from iHerbs.

http://www.iherb.com/Search.aspx?c=1st=lkw=L-Lysine

Much easier to work with.? I dissolve it in a little water, mix with food and
feed it to mine.

Sharyl?

It occurred to me last night that I did not take the time to properly say my
condolences for the lost kittys such as Melina. It saddens me whenever a little
animal leaves us and my thoughts are sincerely with their owners. I've been
kind of?preoccupied with Smokey. I really understand how these guys can effect
you, I think it's because they are so innocent and, like Smokey, are so
trusting. Every time I go to pet him, which is a lot, he purrs, even though
he's not feeling great.

I will be gone for six days on a previously planned vacation, (bad timing, I
know). However, he will be staying with my vet, I'm really hoping that she can
get his ulcers cleared up. I absolutely will get him on lysine. Just one more
question?if you all don't mind:?Do I get it in liquid form or is it a powder?

I'll email when I return to give an update. Can you send pictures on this site?
If so and if it's appropriate, I can send a picture of Smokey.

Thanks, again,
Kathryn

Wendy I am doing ok.Thanks for your concern.I really had the urge NOT to go to
Sids tonight. But my heart dragged me there as usual. Not the same without Melina
there. She was the first one I would look for and then I would carry her around
and do the cat check head count.I fell for that baby girl the second I laid
eyes on her.

Also keep Jaws in your prayers,he is not doing so well.Another one that wins
