Re: [Felvtalk] Vit. B-comp/B12/Iron injections

2009-07-13 Thread Amy

Hi Belinda,

Posting to the list because your info is always so helpful. My vet responded
to my e-mail and said that the B vit injections are recommended once a month
and the iron injection only one time and that's when initially starting Epogen.
She was thinking of the B-vit injections along with the Epo if his HCT drops a
lot. If it gets better, we'd like to do the digestive panel and look for
pancreatitis or malabsorption problems but are waiting to see how things go.

So basically she recommended I go with the Pet-Tinic and/or the Nutrived. She
said I can switch to Nutrived but the levels do vary on the ingredients other
than folic acid so it's up to me. She wasn't recommending it because it's what
she has but rather because it's what she found recommended most in her research
I guess. I have to compare the two to make sure before I order the Nutrived
but your experience is that you'd use solely the Nutrived? Then she said she'd
do the doxy/pred combo and watch him closely. If things get worse, we'll take
him in sooner and re-evaluate. She's leaving it up to me about the Epo/B vit
injections if he gets worse. What you are saying, though, is that there would
be no harm to give Wolfie the B-vit injections now, right?

Thanks and that should be the last of the questions for now. This is all new
to me so I apologize for asking so much. I'm still researching and learning
all about the Epogen.

PS.  You can give the injections
yourself.  They usually give them once a week, any
extra vit b is peed out it is a water soluble vit and extra
 is peed out.

Re: [Felvtalk] Vit. B-comp/B12/Iron injections

2009-07-13 Thread Belinda Sauro

   Hi Amy,
Wolfie's HCT at 29% isn't horrible, Fred who I get the vit B for, his
HCT hangs around 24% to 26%, he is CRF and some cats with CRF if they
live long enough with it will slowly develop anemia and at some point if
they live long enough some will eventually need Epogen. Epogen isn't
given until the HCT drops to 20% or lower.

Fred's HCT has been between 24% and 26% for a few years because of his
kidney issues. The vit b is suppose to help with keeping his appetite
steady and with the anemia ... don't know if it really has but it hasn't
hurt and he is 18 and has slowed way down so I figure it can't hurt. He
is just recently starting to not eat as well now so I am keeping a close
eye on him and will pick up the vit b today. I give it to the other
cats because I figure the bottle I get will expire before I use it all
so I may as well not waste anymore than I already will anyway and since
it won't hurt them I figure why not. All of my guys are getting older,
my youngest is 8, Fred is the old man. I don't have anymore FeLV
positives, Bailey was my only positive guy and I lost him in 2006.

If you can afford the vit b I would go ahead with that, the Epo I would
wait because once you start it it shouldn't be stopped and it really
isn't needed until the HCT is below 20%, it is kind of a last resort
treatment, you want to try and get the HCT up any and every other way
first and use the Epogen if they aren't working. Since you already have
the pet tinic you may as well use it up and if you need to continue try
the nutrived ... I have had many people tell me their cats liked it, one
girl said her cat would lick it right out of the syringe she used to
give it to him, none of my cats liked it ... in fact my cats won't eat
the food if I put it in there. How does Wolfie do with the pet tinic?

Well off to the vets to pick the vit b up.

2009-07-13 Thread Belinda Sauro
PS. The Nutrived does contain more iron and a little more of some of
the other ingredients, you could always buy a bottle of folic acid, I
did that too and the capsules are tiny and you would only need a tiny
bit of that, so you could open the capsule and sprinkle a tiny bit on
his food, it would be such a small amount he most likely wouldn't notice
it. I bought mine here:

http://www.iherb.com/Folic-Acid-800-mcg-100-Capsules/208?at=0

It is pretty cheap, and you can probably get 10 to 12 doses out of one
capsule.

Holly, go to the link at the bottom of any of the FELVtalk emails,
click on it, and you can unsubscribe yourself. This generally a way
to remove yourself or alter your subscription for most of the email
lists I subscribe to.

Best wishes,

Holly, to unsubscribe you need to go to the email that arrives on the 1st of
every month where you'll find the relevant link. I don't have my email any more
otherwise I'd send you a copy. The info may be on the website too--I'm not
sure. Someone else may also have it.

just to chime in, have been using vitamin-b-complex for years now. if you
are also hydrating, you can inject 3ccs into the port in the bag and just
add it to them that way.
