[Felvtalk] Mae Please add to the CLS
Please add Mae to the CLS. Mae was a 2 y/o FeLV+ dumpster kitty I TNR'd last year. I had trapped her again to relocate her to my back yard since the area the colony was living is being developed. She was living in my garage/cat enclosure while acclimating to my yard and seemed to be doing fine. She was a brave little thing and would almost let me pet her. She was fine Friday morning but I found her passed away Friday night. At least I know she had a safe home and was well fed. Re: [Felvtalk] Urgent! FeLV cat -New Jersey- I need to find him a Sanctuary
you could try angel's gate, they have a place in long island, but also one in upstate near delhi (they were willing to take a feluk cat I was trying to find a home for, but in the end I kept him due to medical issues and anxiety) that was about two years ago so I dont know if they are still up and running. I emailed them through their website. Also another sanctuary is called love and hope in upstate new york they have a website (google love and hope sanctuary new york) i think you will find it through there. good luck!Jeni From: dhotz...@gmail.com To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2009 08:52:41 -0400 Subject: [Felvtalk] Urgent! FeLV cat -New Jersey- I need to find him a Sanctuary I live in Central New Jersey and I have a cat that showed up on my doorstep about 10 months ago. He is so super friendly that my husband and I decided that we wanted to take him in as one of our own. We took him to the vet about 3 weeks ago and he tested positive for Leukemia. We were heartbroken. We cannot take him inside due to the fact that we have 2 healthy cats inside already. The vet said that he is about 2-3 years old and in good health with the exception of testing positive for Leukemia. (by the way - he did test negative for HIV and he has been neutered) He is the sweetest cat and just wants to be petted and loved and talked to. I was out back the other back in my lounge chair and he jumped up onto my chest and wanted me to pet him, which of course I did. He is also very friendly with the neighbor children. I would love to find a safe place for him where he can get some interaction with humans as well as other cats. We have a few other cats that we feed outside and he seems to get along well with them. I need to find a safe place for him where he will be loved and cared for. We really need your help!!! Any information in the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania area will be helpful. Thanks! Never heard of them. According to their website they've only been around since 2005. Lots-of-cats in a rural setting always makes me nervous. And, whoa! They want a $5000 surrender fee for a healthy cat and $7500 to take in an FIV or FeLV cat. Hmmm. Only 10 cats listed for adoption on their petfinder site. And only one of those, an FIV+ boy, is listed as special needs. This also makes me suspicious about the long term viability of the place. You have to be committed to finding homes for the cats. They need human families, attention, and they won't get that in a giant sanctuary setting. And if you're not focused on adoptions, you have to strictly limit your intake to avoid becoming overwhelmed. - Original Message From: Susan Hoffman susan_hoff...@yahoo.com To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Sent: Monday, August 24, 2009 11:12:14 AM Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Urgent! [Felvtalk] Imulan - a t cell lymphocytic immunomodulator
Hello everyone, I really hope this email works. I have been a part of this community for awhile but don't often respond. I did, however, want to share this with you. I have had two cats die from severe anemia and bone marrow suppression associated from felv+. It is a common cause of death for these guys and I have heard over and again in this forum. I currently have another sweet little girl who is about 1 1/2 years old. She was doing well until recently when she started to become lethargic, stopped eating and was found to have a hematocrit of 11%. This is really, really, really low. It is a non-regenerative anemia, with signs of lymphoma. This is pretty much a death sentence for these guys. A blood transfusion would only prolong the sufferng So here's the deal. I found a vet that had the immunomodulator (from Imulan), got the shot and gave it to her on Friday. Her energy is gradually improving, her mucous membrane are pinking up and there are signs of improvement. I don't know if she'll pull through or not, but I have to tell you that this is currently the best option out there for treating this disease. I found some of the information on it. There is rapid and profound improvement of anemia, an increase in bone marrow activity and in some cases, return to normal with negative testing for the virus. I know there isn't a full proof cure out there but I have to say this may prove to be very helpful. The long terms studies are still pending. So here's the deal, if you have a felv+ with bone marrow suppression (including anemia - low red blood cells, thrombocytopenia - low platelets, neutropenia - low levels of neutrophils, or lymphopenia - low lymphocyte count) and may or may not have the associated infections; I highly recommend giving this a try. It is a simple subcutaneous shot given weekly at first and than monthly with improvement of bone marrow suppression and clinical symptoms. It requires a vet order to get it. It is a far better alternative than the repeat cycle of blood transfusions, antibiotic regimens and prednisone. I will let you know how she does. Good luck everyone and God bless you for your generous and selfless hearts. I wouldn't say having only 10 cats listed for adoption is necessarily suspicious. It is - at least partly - a sanctuary and not an adoption center. If I paid from five to ten thousand to get a cat in there, I would probably expect he is going to stay for life, why else would I pay that kind of money? It doesn't appear to be so huge that the cats wouldn't get any individual attention. Overcrowding is much less like when the entry fee is that high. Re: [Felvtalk] Urgent! FeLV cat -New Jersey- I need to find him a Sanctuary
most sanctuaries are just that: they are sanctuaries, for unwanted cats, and do NOT have active adoption programs. if the cats were easily adoptable, well.. it's too easy to forget that sanctuaries are NOT shelter where the public is welcome to wander around whenever they'd like: sanctuary is HOME, to the cats who may never have known one, and to the humans who keep them company. that seems like a VERY VERY high donation, especially considering how upset some folks got with the $500 requested for snowball just recently!!! the other thing is that most FeLVs and FIVs are NOT coming from families, they are coming from shelters and rescues--maybe the high fee is to balance out those who have no families? [Felvtalk] URGENT! 2 Adults and 3 kittens in danger of euthanasia
Hello Everyone! Fellow FELV+ owner and advocate hoping to get some help for some positive adults and kittens in danger of being put to sleep. I heard about this group of kitties from The Cat Shack, a non-profit rescue group out of Trexlertown, Pennsylvania, see a bit on their organization here: http://www.adoptapet.com/adoption_rescue/74581.html I have enclosed photos of the crew, and here is the description provided to me: We have 2 young adult females, very friendly. They were both nursing 3 little kittens, who are also friendly and FeLV+. The babies are 8 weeks old. Please keep them in mind- we have been trying to postpone euthanizing them until we can secure some space for them but its a difficult situation! Here are some pics taken at the vet office- they look nervous because they had just arrived. They are actually quite friendly and lived in a home with a pitbull so are dog friendly. This group is amazing. We adopted an FELV+ kitten from them a while back and they were great with communication and helped coordinate transport for her to come all the way to Mass. I too am willing to help coordinate transport for them if anyone is interested. They seem super sweet and I would take them all had we not just adopted two negatives after years of rescuing felv+ kitties. Can anyone possibly do a foster situation? Of course a permanent home would be great, but I just want to get them safe. Thank you for your time. *_ Heidi Frank Doggone Fit™ *www.doggonefit.com http://www.doggonefit.com MaryChristine wrote: actually, almost NO ONE ever saw angel wings: people bringing cats there were met off-property. i know many folks who brought cats there, and only know of one person who was actually allowed to see the main property (of two or three) where the cats were. and there's still questions about whether tiger ranch was anything other than she claimed it to be: a last resort. lots of politics involved in THAT one. i think that most people who would pay that sum of money are doing so to ensure the cat's comfort--and i doubt that normal folk would even consider that a FeLV might ever find a home. Re: [Felvtalk] Urgent! FeLV cat -New Jersey- I need to find him a Sanctuary
Perhaps, it is just a different way of looking at a situation. If I paid that kind of money to place my cat there I would expect them to move heaven and earth to care for that cat for the rest of its life. That is, in fact, just what people are doing and I think it would be a breach of contract for someone who was paid 5 to 10 thousand to care for a cat for life, to adopt it out to someone else that has no contractual obligation to me. As MC said, it is a sanctuary, not a shelter. If I had 5 to 10 thousand to place a cat there, I would definitely be flying there to see the place, getting references from others, vet references, etc., etc. Gary -Original Message- From: felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org [mailto:felvtalk-boun...@felineleukemia.org] On Behalf Of Susan Hoffman Sent: Monday, August 24, 2009 8:05 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Urgent! Re: [Felvtalk] Imulan - a t cell lymphocytic immunomodulator
Jenny, Do you mind me asking the price of a shot? I'm thinking of trying this for my cats but I think I heard $90 a shot somewhere and I'm thinking that means $360 the first month, $200 the second month, and $90 a month after that. I have several cats and am trying to figure out if it's practical for me to start it. Thanks Amy --- On Mon, 8/24/09, jbero tds.net jb...@tds.net wrote: From: jbero tds.net jb...@tds.net Subject: [Felvtalk] Imulan - a t cell lymphocytic immunomodulator To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Date: Monday, August 24, 2009, 5:19 PM Hello everyone, I really hope this email works. Re: [Felvtalk] Urgent! FeLV cat -New Jersey- I need to find him a Sanctuary
The way I read it is they take in cats that are in dire straights and have made provisions for FeLV's and FIV's. It looks to me like they ask for the large donations if you have a pet for which you want them to take over responsibility. I agree with Gary, that if people pay that amount for lifetime care, they're not apt to want their cat adopted out. I think this fee takes care of a couple of issues for the sanctuary, it keeps the numbers of owner forfeitures down and the money they do get covers costs so the expense doesn't cut into the rescue end. They also have a vet on staff and a low cost spay neuter clinic that is open to the public. It looks pretty impressive. That said, I would still have to check it out myself before any of mine went there (or anywhere for that matter). Of course, I'd have to win the lotto also. --- On Mon, 8/24/09, JENI RECA jrock...@hotmail.com wrote: From: JENI RECA jrock...@hotmail.com Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Urgent! Thanks!
