Re: [Felvtalk] [OT] two sick cats

2015-02-23 Thread Margo

It's arguably possible that Sidney brought it in, or is a carrier. Or, even that Callie has had a latent infection that has surfaced. The vaccine has limited efficacy, and duration, so a weakened immune system could contribute.
Whatever the cause, I hope hat she rallies quickly!
All the best,

Marsha,

I don't think ANY vaccine can possibly hope to cover all the various
strains of anything. I just find it so odd that a mature cat would all of
a sudden come down with calici, as their immune systems, absent FELV, are
quite well developed after a year of age. I'm not a vet and am not trying
to doubt their diagnosis. Just trying to figure it out.

Re: [Felvtalk] [OT] two sick cats

2015-02-23 Thread Marsha
I found out last year that the vaccine doesn't cover all possible
strains of calicivirus. One area vet told of a severe case of it he'd
seen in a cat that had been vaccinated.

I too, wonder if upper respiratory viruses can lie dormant. I will
never know for sure what Harley had in December, but several months
earlier he had an inflammation in his mouth that went away, possibly
herpes or calici trying to assert itself. Or maybe it was something
else. But whatever it was manifested when we had a temperature
inversion that impacted air quality and lasted for something like 10
days. No other cat got sick with a URI, not even Harley's FeLV+
roommate Brock. First part of the illness was a very sore throat &
inflamed larynx. Harley didn't eat because it was impossible or too
painful. The 2nd phase was the nasal part. That's when he developed a
fever, and had copious amounts of nasal discharge (couldn't breathe
through his nose at all for a day or so), and some eye discharge also.

In the one case of Calici I did run across the kitten turned out
fine. We had to syringe feed him due to the abcesses in his mouth,
but he had a 100% recovery.

Vets around here tend to avoid Metacam and favor Buprenex. I worry
about the kidneys with Metacam. Hopefully they went with a minimal dose
for Sidney. A dose of longer acting Buprenex seems to be recently
popular in my area, for post-dental pain relief. Then the owners don't
have to give any pain killer at home. But I have had 2 cats apparently
hallucinate on that. One was very mild. She was sitting on my lap, and
trying to catch a string or something that was floating in the air just
above. It was a very brief occurence. The other had a more pronounced
reaction. He thought he saw a mouse and was intent on catching it.
Every time I moved what it seemed to be under, there was nothing there,
but he made a dash after it to its new hiding place. At first the other
cats believed there must be a mouse, and they joined the chase. After
about a half hour, they realized there was nothing there and wandered

spent around 12 hours checking the places he thought it went. He didn't
sleep for more than 24 hours. My vet put a note in his file.
