Sheri.....

It might help to ease your mind ( in the future as well) to familiarize yourself with the Pill identifier apps available on the net..... there are quite a few of them.... I have used the one at Drugs.com successfully in the past but I have no idea if it is the best of the bunch or not....  If you google " Pill identification" you will get at least 20 hits.....   As prednisone and prednisolone are generic it is entirely possible that you got the correct drug but perhaps this batch came from a different manufacturer....   for eg.   My generic BP meds look different every one or two scripts.... likewise for other drugs I have taken more than once....

Robert, May I ask what his HCT is?

Yes, Robert, I would think that it makes sense to try to get ahead of the problem. Just purely on a logical basis, while the bone marrow is still able to produce red cells, get him started on the Epogen and see if that helps. I also would again recommend Doxycycline in the hopes that it would act to keep the viral load down.

Amani...

I understand your reasoning and have no rebuttal as I had not really considered this... As it makes sense to address anemia BEFORE it becomes life threatening perhaps it would make sense to start Epogen( or similar) well before all the progenitors are wiped out.... My young boy Yogi ( who is riddled with FeLV related problems... ) is mildly anemic and I was , in fact, considering starting the drug before his numbers drop too substantially...... Very aggravating that my current Vet appeared willing, initially, to write me a script for Winstrol but took back the offer after she spoke to the clinics director... Can't afford to keep changing Vets want someone with at least a " little " investment in my guy and who has a sense of his history...

It's not the same, Robert, and I am not sure it would work. The Epogen acts on the kidneys to secrete erythropoietin, which is a hormone that tells the bone marrow to produce more red cells.

The problem, in my opinion, is that the FeLV infiltrates the red cell progenitor cells in the bone marrow and either kills them or takes them over so that they make viruses, not red cells. My hypothesis is that when the red cell production stops, it is because all the progenitor cells have been destroyed or taken over the by virus. Thus, giving Epogen probably won't be helpful, because the cells which normally respond to erythropoietin by creating more red cells, can no longer do so because the progenitor cells are damaged or dead and can no longer produce red cells.

Winstrol is known to be good for osteoporosis. My hypothesis is that it strengthens the bone marrow by encouraging the growth of new cells in the bone marrow. That would explain how red cell production gets started back up again with the use of Winstrol.

With the Epogen, it is causing more erythropoietin to be produced to "tell" the progenitor cells to produce red cells, but the progenitor cells are either dead or damaged by the virus and can no longer respond appropriately to the detection of higher levels of erythropoietin. Epogen might work if you start it before the bone marrow is really devastated - ie - before you get the big drop in red cells and haematocrit.

Fair warning though: this is all my hypothesis, based on my own observations, research and experience.

Amani

Wondering if anyone in the group has any experience with Epogen or Procrit ( and other such RBC enhancing drugs typically used with Kidney Failure patients)....?? It's appears to be quite a bit cheaper when used for veterinary purposes than human....?? As the go to drug for anemia in Kidney patients it would stand to reason that it " should" work for Feline anemia......??? There will not be the same resistance to using this as we encounter attempting to procure Winstrol......

Good evening all. I just opened the refill the vet gave me for my FELV + cat named Bogey. The pill they gave me is a different shape than the one she ran out of last night. The other was a small oblong shaped pill and this one is a round scored pill with a V on one side a the numbers 50 94 on the reverse.
I fear they have given me the wrong prescription here although it says
Prednisone 5mg on the front. If I could ask?what does the Pred pill look like that you are giving your cat? I don?t want to miss a dose but also
don?t want to give her the wrong med. Thanks in advance.

Sherri and Bogey

Hi Margo,
Both the viles are marked Prednisolone so I believe they mismarked this and put the wrong pill in there(Prednisone). I didn?t realize that I HAD been giving her Prednisolone until right this moment. I am not sure what to do. She is due now for the pill but I feel like I should skip this dose and get to the vet first thing in the morning to get the other. Do you agree? Will
it hurt her to miss a dose?

Sorry, it's 5 mg predniSONE.

What you had before was likely predniSOLONE.

Prednisolone s considered by many to be better for cats, because predniSONE must be proceesed in the liver before it is the useable form predniSOLONE

Sorry....
