Hi Nina, I am new to the group and recently lost two beautiful babies less than a week apart. I know how you feel when you say numb. I tried to work Tuesday but could not even think. I am left with 2 FeLV positive cats and 7 negative cats. Of course they will need re testing in 6 months. I feel guilty in that for my love of cats I probably brought this in the house when I adopted Lionel. He was a big old Tomcat. Not sure of his age. I immediately had him fixed and made him an indoor cat. He had some injuries from a fight with a raccoon. He had a broken leg which was healed. Also a bite wound that took a month to heal. I have a limited income and I do the best I can by getting the cats fixed at a spay neuter clinic. Long story short..5 of the cats had an upper respiratory infection. Two were taken to the vet and treated with antibiotics. All sick cats stayed inside along with junior and Lionel. All that were most exposed to Lionel got sicker. After Pumpkin died I took Junior back to the vet who tested him for FeLV and he was positive. It was a whirlwind to get the rest tested. Lionel tested positive for FeLV and FIV. With a heavy and guilty heart he had him euthanized. It is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Tiny tested positive today for FELV . He is now in the house with me and Junior. I still have the two cats separate, because Junior is being treated for some unknown infection that had his temperature at 105.3. This is why they decided to test him. This is the plan of action. Keep cats separated. I think Tiny and Junior can be kept together. I am just waiting until Junior had finished his anibiotics. Get the 7 negative cats vaccinated for FeLV and other vaccines as well. Get Tiny and Junior vaccinated against the other major disease. Pray that 6 months from now the other cats are negative. Anything else major missing from this picture? Oh yes Junior is about 4 and Tiny is 5. They are half brothers. They do not like each other..lol Junior is Blind in one eye because he was hit by a car last March. He has been an inside cat since. Tiny is a major hunter. What can I do to keep him happy and entertained? Again my sympathies go out to you.. Sally -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. How are the rest of your group doing after the URI? Not sure what the URI stands for. Right now I came home to find one of my cats, Grey and White, up a tree. I guess someone's dog got loose. You were saying they were all exposed to Lionel and now Junior and Tiny have tested positive for FeLV. It sounds like the others were tested, but are negative at this point? YES Was Pumpkin positive as well? NO, he is the reason I took Junior back in as both had anemia. Pumpkin was also jaundiced. Pumpkins last two nights were spent at the vets office. HE was fine the night before perky looking like he would come home. Less than 12 hours later he crashed and had seizures. From what I read all could be symptons of FeLV. He did not even know me and was cold to the touch. I immediately got the vet to euthanize him. He was already gone, just a shell left behind. Lionel ( age unknown) and Pumpkin 1yr old were only with me 7 months. I still loved them very much. Tiny and Junior are half brothers caught from their feral mom. They are 5 and 4 respectively. Two very different kitties.. Tiny is very much the hunter. I will have to find things for him to do. Junior is well adapted to being an inside cat. Unfortunately for him it is what put him at risk. I am sure Lionel or Pumpkin may have been the source. Tiny did have a bite wound when I caught him to take him for testing. I hope he did not bite the other cat back. He is neutered but cats are territorial. I do not want to spread this around. I pray for all the cats here. Sally I'm new to FeLV. My Pippin tested positive at six weeks of age back in June. We're waiting at least 120 days until she is retested to see if she throws the virus. We were keeping her water, food and litter pan separate from other other three cats from day one (and vice versa). We knew right away that we could not give her up; she was part of our family, but it took awhile before we decided to mix our cats. We got our adult cats vaccinated and waited a few weeks to let the vaccine take hold before mixing them. Since the vaccine is not 100% effective, we know there is a chance that one or more of our kitties could turn up positive in the future. While we hope and pray this doesn't happen, we've gone into it knowing it could happen. But, we take it day to day and enjoy our time with them to the fullest. Our Pippin is healthy at this point and each day with her is a blessing, as well as with our other cats, Tigger, Taylor and Bob. Since Pippin is asymptomatic, we aren't treating her with any drugs at this point. We have her on 500 mg of L-Lysine daily (to boost her immune system) mixed with Innova brand wet food, plus she gets Innova Evo dry. Our other cats are on Authority brand wet food (Petsmart brand) which is the best we can do on our budget at this time. They were eating Friskies wet food, so the Authority is a step up. There is much wisdom, knowledge and experience on this list. You are in the right place :) Blessings to you and your kitties. Re: To Sally
Gina, Thanks for the information about URI. If my brain was working right now I probably would have figured that out. As it turns out all the cats that had the Upper respiratory infection have tested positive. I guess their immune systems were fighting too much. Lily had a sneeze or two but never a full blown cold. I just read the abstract regarding using low dose interferon for treatment of FIV and possibly FeLV. I know this was a small study group. Does anyone here have experience with this sort of treatment? More importantly Should all the cats get this drug? The other cats may be already fighting off the virus. I am very limited in funds. And have not yet figured out how I am going to handle the expense of treating and vaccinating the cats. I am still surprised the kitten is testing negative she is probably the most exposed cat to Lionel . They were best buddies. Although he is the only cat testing positive for FIV he may not have been the source of the FeLV. Tiny was the first with the URI. I know I will never know where it originated. OK next question. I could not get appointments for the cats until late November. I will probably be able to get them into the vet as a walk-in sooner. With 9 cats I can't take them all . Should I take the FeLV cats first or get the negative cats to get vaccinated? The cats are separated. For the most part the others are staying outside. Tiny and junior are in my bed room. Mainly to keep Tiny from darting outside which he already did yesterday. I managed to catch him right away, but he will get smart about that and I may not be so lucky the next time. The only medicine I have now is amoxycillin which is being used to treat whatever infection caused Junior's temperature to go so high. I also have Pumpkin's Baytril, so I am giving that to Tiny for his bite wound. I know it is overkill, but many years ago I lost a cat from a bite wound. The vet advised my dad when he was euthanized he had FeLV. He was 12 yrs old and I remember even after antibiotics his wound never healed. He stayed with me until the end. I am sure he had renal failure. I may have more questions. I need to check out the archives as well. Thanks for the help. Re: My Little Luna
Hi Kristina, I am so sorry and understand your dilemma. I still question the decision I made about one of my cats. I think you will know in your heart when the time is right. Bless you, Sally At 07:42 AM 10/15/2006 -0700, you wrote: Hi Everyone, It's been awhile since I have posted, but I've been keeping up. I have two FeLV cats and 2 that aren't. From information I have gathered here, I learned that I should isolate the non-FeLV cats ffom the positives. They've been mixed for almost two years now. I've also learned about different medications and which would be the best to give them. Unfortunately, one of my FeLV cats, Luna who's always been a tiny little thing, has recently become extremely lethargic. We took him into the vet on Friday and were told that the leukemia is now getting to him. He's so very anemic and he's become quite bony. We were told that he won't have long. Yet, he's very alert; his eyes aren't glossed over as you would expect a sick cat's to be. He's still interested in things going on around him, but just doesn't have the enregy to participate. It's so sad to watch. And it's breaking my heart. My daughter's too. My husband has been so helpful and supportive, but I still don't know what to do. He has so little energy, that he is having trouble making it to the litter box. I've picked him up to take him to it and two days in a row, out of the many times I have picked him up to do this, he has peed on me. He's most often going to the bathroom properly if I am able to place him there. It was just these two times. He also has so little energy, that he is not eating and drinking on his own. I have diluted canned food that is chopped fine and put it in a large syringe and have force fed him. He didn't like this, so I just put the food on my finger and he licks it off. So, at least he's still interested in food and going to the bathroom properly. I even took him back to the vet yesterday and they showed me how to insert an IV into him to keep him from being dehydrated and to keep fluids in him. I have asked them about a transfusion, but, then I feel this will just prolong the inevitable and we will all have to go through this again later.I can't see putting Luna through all this again later. I can't stand watching my daughter suffer. I also can't stand the pain this is putting me through. I am willing to do all sorts of things for my little Luna, but how much should I do? I wish he could talk so that he could tell me what he would like for me to do. Is he suffering, and if so, how much? Should I keep putting him through the IV's, feeding him the way I've been doing, and helping him go to the bathroom? It's hard on my family, specifically me who's tending to him, and I can only imagine what Luna is feeling. Can anybody advise me? I was so hoping I had longer than two years with this little fella. It just seems so unfair. Thank you all. Kristina No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. I lost one cat less than two weeks ago. He crashed at the vet's office. He was never tested but I am sure this virus had something to do with it. My Nerves are shot. Please pray for junior. I do not know how the vet is with treating these FeLV cats. I was planning on seeing my usual vet but they weren't sure how soon they could see junior. I did not sleep well last night. as I knew he wasn't feeling well. I will let you know tonight. Sally -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Hi Diane and all Junior is home. He has a upper respiratory and was given a stronger antibiotic, subcutaneuos fluids and a b12 shot. I was also told to give him some yogurt as he has diarrhea. His fever had gone down a little it was 104. He ate when he got home and started purring. Now he is separated from tiny. I have to go to work to make sure I can take care of these kitties. I am still looking for help (financially) to get the though this . I live near Richmond VA. If anyone knows of any good cat groups to contact please let me know. Hi, Everyday that goes by I am more confused. Junior went to the vet today. She treated him for the upper respiratory infection. I though all was good with the world. I called her this evening to let her know how junior was doing. I do think he is still running a temp, but I did not want to upset him anymore. She was preparing me to put him down maybe as soon as tomorrow. I know at least for this moment he is not ready to cross that bridge. I have separated him and Tiny. The other cats are still locked outside the bedrooms. And mostly stay outside for their own safety. I know this group is for the cats, but I am mentally, emotionally, and physically drained.I had reactive hypoglycemia this morning. I have ordered immuno-regulan on Kelly's advice. I now will have to talk the vet into giving it. I printed out the protocol for administering it. Does anyone out there know of vets in the Richmond VA area who may be willing to work with me. My usual vets office is extremely busy. I am too tired to think. Sally PS My server would not send this message last night. Junior seems better this morning. I don't believe he has a fever. I will not put him through that ordeal unless I think there is a problem. Junior and Tiny don;t like each other. They don't fight, but they do growl a lot at each other. For now I will keep them separate. The stress may have benn what precipitated this most recent cold. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Little Black showed up this morning. I usually let her in long enough for her to get her fill without the other cats harassing her. The FeLV cats were closed up in the bedrooms. She ate in peace. Re: Junior
Hi Michelle It, immuno-regulin, came in the mail today. Problem is the vet who saw Junior, thinks it is time to put him down. He is much better today. He still has the sniffles. I need to find someone to do the injections. I just searched the archives about doing subcutaneous injections. I could probably do these, but I did not order any needles. I will try to stop by the other vets office tomorrow to see what they can do. They are just so busy that their appointment schedule is booked 6 weeks ahead. However they did do the emergency testing of the 9 cats after Junior tested positive. Funny thing is I think this post was made today. How timely for me. Junior is so sweet. Today he is playful. The other cats
Hello, Junior and Tiny are still doing OK. Tiny desperately wants to go outside, but he can't. Hopefully he will adjust as well as Junior did, when Junior became an inside cat. Funny thing is the fact that Junior became an inside cat probably increased his exposure to FeLV. Tiny was also kept inside during his bout of upper respiratory the summer. Although I don't know the source of the infection . All the cats come in to eat from time to time. I miss Lionel and Pumpkin. I planted some pansies by their graves. Now for the other cats I feel that I am neglectful, because I am paying close attention to Junior and Tiny and hardly seeing the other cats. The other cats have been staying outside. Maybe they don't really care. Close call for outside cats... Last night around 4AM I heard a strange noise. I thought it was in the house, but as I got closer to the Kitchen, I realized it was on the back deck. A strange distressful call. So I peek out the door and I see what I think is a big dog attacking what I assumed was Spike. She hangs out in the back deck because the other cats pick on her. I do not have my glasses on and I fumble to get the key in the lock to open the door. By the time I started to open the door I see the raccoon. I still assume it was attacking Spike. I have to feed the other cats outside and occasionally I see a opossum or raccoon. The raccoon left the porch, and I see Spike on the steps. She would not come in so I could not tell if she was hurt, but it did not look like it. Then I saw the second raccoon on the rail. It too meandered off as if nothing had happened. I go out on the deck and see not fur or blood. It was starting to rain. I worried all night that to raccoon maybe got one of the cats. I did not get much sleep. This put my schedule off and I was not able to go by the vets office to see bout getting the immuno-regulin injections for Junior and Tiny. I have to work tomorrow and Sunday I have to drive to DC to pick up Eric at the airport. This will be a 6 hour round trip drive. I hope Juniors antibiotics continue to help his URI . I don't know how y'all deal with this. I cannot depend on Eric to call the vet and set things up. It all falls on me. Even though Junior is really his cat! Anyway, how do those of you who have other cats make sure the other kitties are not feeling neglected. It will be cold soon. They will be (crossing Fingers) vaccinated next Friday, I know i will need to wait two weeks, but I hope to be able to mix them after that. There are 9 cats altogether. I will still do my best to keep Tiny and Junior apart from them. Thanks for the support of this great group. Sally -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Tiny
Hi Maybe I spoke too soon. When I brought Tiny in after he tested + for FelV I knew he had a bite wound, from what I assumed was a scuffle with a cat. I have cleaned it and kept an eye on it. It was healing pretty nicely. After I sent the last post I noticed what looked like blood on his other cheek. Well it appears he must have been bitten more than once. There are three tiny holes and a bloody fluid is coming out of it. I cleaned it with peroxide. Does this sound like a cat bite? it looks a little odd to me. Also I read somewhere, can't remember where that I could give the cats pediatric vitamins, I bought Poly Vi Sol with iron, but I am not sure the dosage. I can't seem to find where I read this. Does anyone know? Thanks Sally -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Version: 7.1.408 / Virus Database: 268.13.5/482 - Release Date: 10/18/2006
update
Today I got 6 of my FeLV neg cats vacinated. I have one more to go she is semi-wild and I do not see her everyday. It looks like my regular vet is willing to work with me on Junior and Tiny. I am trying to work out times to get the Immuno-regulin injections done. Especially for Junior as he is still fighting the upper respiratory infection. I feel a lot better about the situation than I did two weeks ago. I am a realist and I know there will be ups and downs. For now the Crisis is over. I have kept Junior and Tiny together. Even though they do not get along. I have no choice. Junior's cold is better but he still sneezes occasionally. I out a bird feeder up for tiny. He was so much an outdoor loving cat. I hope this will entertain him. Eventually I hope to get the room more cat friendly. It is a money thing. Thanks Nina, Kelly, Wendy and evreyone else who has supported me through this. Re: I'm sad again.... :( Belinda can you add Jake to CLS
Terrie My heart goes out to you. I lost three cats this year. Two a week apart. It is never easy. I cried as I read this. I decided no more cats until the FeLV group is gone, but someone had different ideas. A week ago when I was taking 6 of the negative cats to be vaccinated I find a very skinny kitty eating on my front porch. He did not leave. He is neutered, so he must have belonged to someone at sometime. As he is still here. I took him to the vet yesterday with the remaining cat and got him checked out. He too was negative and now vaccinated. Junior and Tiny also got their immuno-regulin shots yesterday. The vet told me he had a client whose cat tested positive for FeLV and was re tested every two years always positive. The cat lived 12 more years. I can only hope TIny may be as lucky. He has no symptoms and was a weak positive. Junior has given me some scares with anemia and a high temp, but he has been good for 3 weeks. sally At 08:51 PM 11/3/2006 -0500, you wrote: Terrie, I am so sorry! You have been through so much. Re: SOS - you are not going to believe this - now my little Olive has FIP (?)
Dear Hideyo You are a kind hearted sensitive caring person. I have not been on this group long to know the full story about how the ferals came to be in your care. I do know you have loved and cared for them which is something they would not have in the wild. I don't know the exact stats but a feral cats lifespan is very short indeed. Not usually a good outcome. Hindsight is always better than foresight, please do not blame yourself.. You are in no way to responsible for this outcome. YOU ARE A WONDERFUL PERSON!!! Many years ago I had a cat who I was told died of something called peritonitis. We lived on a farm at that time he was a big tabby and white tom cat. I was away at college when all this transpired. MY parents took him to the vet who said there really wasn't much he could do this was some 30 years ago. He put the cat on antibiotics and the cat ate but I understand continued to lose weight. My parents were waiting for me to come home before doing anything with him. Unfortunately as cats will do he went off and I never saw him again. The more we are exposed to the felines we love the more likely we may encounter these problems. Am i going to quit having cats because of my two FELV positive babies, NO WAY. Olive is my feral kitty who is now about a year old and who came from the same colony as Dharma and Naomi. Since she is a feral kitty, I really did not know how sick she was and it's my fault not paying attention to her more..she had a seizure tonght -- and I held her and noticed that she had lost lots of weight and very dehydrated.. and she must be very weak as she let me hold her.. I gave her 250 ml of subQ fluid as she was extremely dehydrated and hot -- and I ran to the emergency clinic after that..and asked them to run a blood work---I was so praying that it's not FIP -- then, I waited and finally talk to the doctor regarding blood work and it was very similar to Peter's blood work --the doctor did not know exactly what it was-- she said either cancer or FIP...her gloublin is elevated and alubmin is decreased, her total bilrbrin is elevated.. and mos of the liver (ALT and AST) were very elevated. .she was not anemic (PCV=31) -- she thought I really coudln't treat her since she was feral and suggest euthanaisa.. but I said no.. I want to bring her home and try everything I can.. she just was walking around and eating until earlier today...so I brought her home as I knew she would be better off coming home as there wasnt' anything they could do for her specifically. I held her for a long time.. she is just very sweet.. I did not know ir I coule syringe feed her,, but she let me and she ate very well.. she is just very sweet little gir.. she is black/white taxido girl... sthe bad new is since then, she had three more seizures.. I am now convinced that I am the one who is producing this disease fo rmy kitties -- I know that FIP is stress induced disease.. and all of the kitties who have had FIP were not corona virus posivite kitties and the become exposed due to all my others who have been.. and all of the kitties who have had FIP have been here less than year.. and my envrinment has caused them to die -- Dr. Ishidaalso mentioned something similar when I first explained how many kitties I have had FIP -- as much as he admired what I do. .he thought that I was causing FIP among my cats.. and I have to agree -- it's too much of price to pay and they did not deserve to die.. I had a good intension but it was not good enough and I am very responsible of all the deaths so I really am not any kind of hero.. if I did not bring them home,, they would not have gotten FIP ...I don't regret that the fact thatI had an opportunity to have met them.. but had no right to bring my house which is considered to be a very high risk for FIP .. they did not ask for that... Everyone, please pray and send a good positive healinng energy to my little Olive.. I started on FOI tonight and am hoping that it will make her feel better - again I have not given up regardlesss of whatever the disease might be.. Re: Pippin tested negative on her IFA test --- plus questions aboutSpaying ... Hideyo
Hi Gina I am going out on a limb with this answer, but generally a cat will not go into heat at this time of year bc the kittens would be born in the winter. I have safely waited until January no later than early February to spay kittens that were born the previous spring. They did not go into heat before the spaying. If you are concerned though I would schedule her appointment at your earliest convenience. Hope this helps...sally At 11:10 AM 11/9/2006 -0800, you wrote: I just read the article! Pippin tested negative on her IFA test for FeLV and FIV. We waited 22 weeks between the first test (ELISA) test and the IFA. The vet says she feels confident in the results for several reasons: because Pippin was 7 weeks old when she had her first test and she was a faint positive on the ELISA at that time, and because we waited for 5 months to retest her. I asked if there was a chance it had gone to the bone marrow and she felt that it was very unlikely. Should we be celebrating?! :) At any rate, the next step is for Pippin to be spayed. She will be getting the pre-lab work done, fluids during the spay and pain medication. Is there anything else I should ask for? I recall something about a certain anesthetic that is preferable. What is the name of it? After the spay what can I do to make her more comfortable? She tends to be hyper-active (as kittens are! lol) so I was thinking of having her stay in our room for the first day or so, so she won't run around the house in her usual 120 mph fashion. Or would it be better for her to stay in her crate? Any suggestions would be appreciated :) Thank you! Gina Everyone is raving about the all-new Yahoo! Mail beta. Re: OT Help, I am so embarrassed
Thirty some years ago a skunk let loose under our house. The whole house reeked and I was home from college but had to get away until it aired out. Anyway, my mom was a teacher then and went to school apparently the smell had permeated her purse. Talk about embarrassing...yep she stunk! There are worse things than cat pee. Doesn't mean we don't love you tho! ;-) It's the same with people who use too much perfume, or drink excessive amounts of coffee (dragon breath). Tips: 1) pick up a small battery operated black light, approx. $30 at Pet Smart and on many animal product websites. Before you leave in the morning, run it over your clothes, purse and shoes...it'll show you if there are bodily fluids on you. (run it on the car seats as well, incase you transfered any moist fluids to the car by accident one day. 2) Keep a bottle of Fabreeze or the generic brand of the same thing in your car and spray yourself down when you get into the car or before you walk into the building. It'll help. Also, to some people, certain fragrances can registar as having a cat pee smell. I worked with a wonderful lady who bathed in and sprayed on a peach-scent...it was VERY overpowering...and with her body chemistry ...it DID smell exactly like cat urine. And she didn't HAVE a cat. Sorry if I've offended anyone...wasn't my intention..AND, I'm certain I've carried an awful aroma to work a time or two myselfcan't tell you how many times I've toed cat-hack while putting on dress shoes in the morning...Coebeio likes to hide it in the toes of my shoes...then didn't have time to change stockings (or stockings to change into) and just wiped everything without throughly CLEANING everything because I was running late. Junior
Hi all I am back from my trip. Our old email is still not working. I am playing catchup on emails, so i have not yet read any of the archives. Eric was able to get junior to the vet for his eye meds both wednesday and today. He only missed one dose od the Trusopt, glaucoma medicine yesterday. Other than the eye problem which is serious enough Junior seems in pretty good condition. Since he is not seeing well. His litter box is back in my room. I got him back in lysine today. I cannot get Eric to give him medicine. Also I have to pound it into a powder and I add it to his food. Next time I buy it I wil get the capsules. I took sone to for a small cold sore I sometimes get, It did clear up faster than normal. Thanks Nina Kerry and Phaewyrn for all your suggestions and help. Sally Davis
Fwd: test/junior/ferals
Sorry about the test email. I sent one last night from my new address and I don't see that it posted. I am getting emails. Just in case my previous email does not show up. Junior got his meds while I was away at the vet's office. I hated to subject him to the ride 2 days in a row, and Eric almost fell with the cat in his carrier. Eric would not have been able to get up if he had fallen. I never thought about thsi until I saw the posting in the archives about the cats being left at the horse boarding place. Maybe someone can help my sister who is disabled and lives in Manteca, CA. Apparently in these rural bedroom type communities the is no help for feral kitties. At least not that she or I have been able to come up with. SHe is aslo not in a position to trap them, There are no clincis or shelter that we can find who do not euthanize cats. SHe had a colony, not sure how big living under a shed in her back yard. SHe does feed them, bit that is all she can do for them due to her health. Anyone out there in CA who might have ideas. Too many cats too few people who can help. Thanks Sally

I tend to notice weird stuff. Junior's ears become real thick feeling, and are even shaped funny. I think this happens when he runs a fever, which I am sure is every night. He eats and except for the eye problem seems to do ok at this time. I will call my sister requarding the Alley cats web site. I am sure she does not have internet at this time. Michelle To be honest I don't like to take his temp because it does not need the added stress. I know that cat's normal temps are much higher than ours his has been as high as 106.5. That was the day I got the bad news of his FeLV status. It has been that high since then as well. His ears are not always swollen up like this but when they are swollen they are also very warm. Yes maybe it is from being curled up. I just talked with my sister. She just got internet turned on yesterday. I emailed her the link for the cats. She thinks some of the cats are actually neighbors cats. I will try to take junior's temp again to see if it is a fever. First it is time for his glaucoma medicine. Re: question
I have considered doing just that. I don;t have any syringes what ones do you use and where do you get them. I think I read somewhere that you are more likely to get a site reaction on subcutaneus injections. I would think since they have already gooten the injections IV this would be less likely to happen. I am thinking the thisk ears may be hematomas. He does not have any symptoms that his ears bother him. He doesn;t scratch and there are no apparents mites. It might be an ear infection. I do have trasaderm from an earlier infection B4 the Felv diagnosis. I may start using it to see if it helps. Only thing is it adds one more torture to his routine. How can you not stress a cat and treat him too? I did get a pill crusher for his lysine tablets. Eric did not like me using a hammer. I was fine with that. The other thing with the ears are they always seem bright red. Is that a symptom I need to be worried about? Thanks for all the information. I called last week for an appt, but missed the call as I was away when They returned my call. I called again this week. Well they are extremely busy so her appt is not until Feb 27. She is coming in heat. And will probably come in heat again b4 2/27/07. Is there anything out there that will calm her down? The eye with glaucoma is the bad eye. I can't see that the medicine helps except for temporarily. If he has to stay on it then it would make sense to remove the eye. I will find out about the ears he does ha a swelling behin his ears. I am hoping is just infection. Re: Emailing: LoanRulesForm
Hi Junior went to the vet this morning. Hie was given a shot of depomedrol. The vet said it would either make things better or worse. The next option is removing the eye. The thing with his ears is inflammation. No infection there thank goodness. I asked about the interferon, but no luck there.I will wait and see what the steriods do for him. As for the Transfer factor, yes it is supposed to be a immune booster and it is expensive, which is why I would like feedback as to effectiveness. I realize every case is different. Such as the thing with juniors ears It seems that noone here has seen this problem. I will get the the bill information too. thanks Sally On 1/18/07, Belinda [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Sally, Haven't ever used transfer factor and haven't heard of plus formula. Junior's ear
I am hoping Junior's eye starts to improve after his shot today. His ear is now curling back where it is deflating from the swelling. He looks very funny. Hopefully by tomorrow the ears will be back to normal. He seems to feel a bit better. He ate well and slept a good part of the day. We shall see if this helps him. Re: Junior's ear
Junior feels a little better today. The swelling in his ear has gone down. Now his ears curl back. Very funny looking. I am hoping to see improvement in the eyes. The redness is better, but you can still see they are not right. By reducing the inflammation, hopfully it will alllow the antibiotic to clear the infection. My though on the subject. Re: internist thinks Lucy has FIP
Hi Michelle My prayers are with you for your sweet Lucy. I had a cat many years ago die supposedly of FIP in the early seventies. He was a wonderful tabby and white cat named Bud. He died while I was away at school. My parents were waiting for me to come home that weekend so I could see him. He went off that same week. Although the diagnosis was a guess based on symptomolgy. I do know antibiotics did not help him. It is a shame after all these years there is still not much they can do. Prayer can work miracles and I am an example of that. I am fully recovered from an autoimmune disease I had in the mid 70's called dermatomyositis. I find out 22 years after I was first diagnosed that most people with this disease stay on medication all their lives. I was able to wean myself off the prednisone in 4 years. I honestly though my result was normal. I find out that maybe 5% recover to the extent that I did. This disease almost killed me. The treatment for the disease today is basically the same as 30 years ago. I am in remission according to the doctors at NIH. I will pray for you to have strength as well. Love Sally On 1/20/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, the internist thinks Lucy has FIP. Despite the abdominal effusion, she thinks it is dry FIP because the fluid does not look like FIP fluid, and that the fluid is resulting from the effects of FIP on other organs. She thinks it's FIP because of something that was found in the biopsy of the lymph node, I can't remember what it is called but something like granular something, or granulitis, or granuloma, which goes with FIP and not with most other kinds of inflammation. Other possibilities are infection somewhere, the effects of her IBD inflammation, or pancreatitis, but she said that the lymph node being the way it is normally goes only with FIP so she really thinks it is that. I am of course very distressed by this. She said she could do exploratory surgery to diagnose better, but I do not see the point since FIP is not treatable. I want instead to try to treat for the other things it could be. So a broad spectrum antibiotic with anearobic properties (she said clavamox or clindamycin-- any ideas which i should do, I have both?). And up her steroids for IBD/pancreatitis. And perhaps switch her diet to a novel protein diet if there is one that would also be ok for pancreatitis. And she is on feline interferon and I would like to get acemannan, and then monitor her HCT and if it goes too low try epogen. any thoughts? Has anyone actually had an internist, rather than a primary care vet, say FIP when it was not? distressed, michelle -- Junior needs your help with his care fighting Feline Leukemia. I am very tuned into weather. I work in a retail nursery and my job is mostly outside. Of course when the weather is real bad we try to find something to do inside. Spring is right around the corner and I can't wait. I got poison ivy the other day because I was planting some helleborus beneath and old tree. Well you can't see the poison ivy at this time of year, but you sure can get it. My stupidity of course. Hi everyone, Just a brief update on Junior. His Right eye still looks like it is budging with a definite cataract. He does not appear to have discomfort from it though. He is still getting the Trusopt for Glaucoma and the chloramphenicol antibiotic ointment in both eyes. I also have been giving him lysine 500mg and have added Transfer Factor Plus to his supplements. He gets Pet Tabs plus iron as well . He is eating better and has put on a little bit of weight. He is exploring the house. I am guessing because his vision is not as good as it used to be. The left eye remains dilated and the pupil is misshaped. It does look better to me although. I may be getting used to it that way. He ears are thick and red again. It doesn'r seem to bother him I will keep and eye on them. This has been a very reactive disease. It does not allow you to be proactive. I am hoping while he is better the Transfer Factor will help his immune system. I am still considering removing the right eye, but I want him at his best before surgery. Any idea how long after I use the Transfer Factor I should wait. Daisy is in heat and driving me crazy. I could not get her an appointment until 2/27/07. I just want to thank everyone for their help. I still have not gotten anywhere with my vet for interferon. He decided to do the steriods. I think the shot gave Junior a boost but I still want to give the interferon a shot. I am hoping the Transfer Factor will keep him stable. Thanks, Sally Davis -- Junior needs your help with his care fighting Feline Leukemia. Re: Rompi
Hi Paulo, You can use other email addresses for Yahoo groups to send and receive posts. I use several different email addresses. I am new to Gmail, but this is where I receive all my yahoo group posts including the anemia group and others. The only problem is with yahoo and sometimes for weird reasons email has bounced and you quit recieving it. You can got to yahoo to reactivate. Someone elase may know where to find your security question for the groups. I would just sign up again with a new user ID. There are some really good Groups there. Sally Davis On 1/27/07, Paolo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry for not having written before, yesterday I was just too shocked and needed a rest to gather my ideas. In addition, very high stress always induces me sleep, just could not stay awake. We haven't assessed more specifically the type of lymphoma yet, but are going to do it between today and monday. Michelle, I have a problem with Yahoo groups. I am a subscriber of the feline anemia group since 2000 or maybe even before, so I guess I have an User ID and password (but my Email address is not with Yahoo, as you can see). But now, at 7+ years, I cannot remember my ID or password any longer. The strange thing is that I remember there was a security question to be answered, that I filled in at the moment of subscription, that should serve to retrieve ID and/or Password. But I am unable to find where to access to that question. In addition, even trying to create a new profile as a new user, Yahoo only accepts @yahoo.com addresses where to send group posts. This is definitely odd. Is it possible that, being a member of the Feline Anemia group already, and so receiving the posts, there isn't a way to have me recognized as a legitimate user? Is there a way to write to a human being at Yahoo, and not to a stupid automated answer system? Soon Paolo -- Junior needs your help with his care fighting Feline Leukemia. Junior
I now have Junior on Transfer factor Plus. Time will tell if it is helpful. I like to think it will help him. He is somewhat stable except for the eye problem. He sees very little right now. He is figuring his was around the house and venture out of my bedroom often. I take that for a sign he at leasts feels better. Althiugh I know glaucoma is painful he shows no sign of discomfort in that eye. Maybe because of the prior nerve damage. My Fluffy had glaucoma from an eye injury and he let me know it did not feel good. That is when I decided to have the eye removed. I pretty much have decided it is the right thing for junior. I just want himat his best if he is to have surgery. I am hoping the Transfer Factor will build up his immune systen and help clear the infection in the other eye. Junior fights me now when he sees me coming. He does not want the eye ointments! He hates it. I take that as a sign he feels better. He is not grooming much, but he is eating a bit better. I upgraded his Catfood. HIs Lysine and Transfer Factor get mixed in the morning dose. I am sorry to hear about Lucy. She looks much like my Spike who thank goodness is neagtive for FELV. I am praying
I am praying for you and your precious Lucy. We all understand how hard these decisions are to make. I think eating is the most important thing and it is so hard when the cat is fighting you. I am sure I will be in your shoes down the road with Junior. I spoke with the vet yesterday about refilling his eye antibiotic. SHe said it wasn't neccessary. He has lost most of the sight in his good eye and is adjusting to his partial blindness. He never got steriod drops for his eye and I am not sure if this will help with the dilation or not. His pupil is dialated and irregular shaped. It has been this way for weeks. The conjunctivitis did clear up so I am dsure the infection is gone. He is on Transfer Factor Plus, CoQ10, lysine and Pet Tinic( now Pet Tabs plus Iron). He is definitely feeling better and put back on some weight. I hate when he gets skinny. I will leave him alone for a few days and see how the eye does. I just went into the living room where he is sleeping on the vent(warm there). I picked him up and instead of protesting or growling like he usally does he was purring. He is feeling better. Maybe the Transfer Factor Plus that was added to his routine a week ago. The vet says he should have visits every 4-6 weeks. If he can go that long without a crisis that would be great. I think he is past the initial infection stage. I am hoping to maintain his health. Thanks everyone for all your help. Lance thanks for answering my question about the Transfer Factor Plus. I told my vet I was using this. It should be interesting to see how he is a month from now. My vet doesn't normally run lots of blood work. The anemia can be checked fairly cheaply in house. I have paid some of the bill at the vet's office. The rest is on credit cards and will take a while. The sad news is, I did have Bart PTS. I was with him when he crossed the bridge, able to snuggle kiss him. How strange is that??? He was certainly, well probably, the most feral cat I ever came across in all my years And, very, very savvy. Never could trap him over the past two years. (I even got info. from Nina on an alternative method.) I honestly believe that because I had earned their trust, Charity led me to him in the blizzard She *knew *he needed help, so she turned to me. Scared, of course, but he kept looking at me and I just knew He had an abdomen so very full of fluid. Unbelievable. The vet did pull out alot, but I finally asked him to stop. Besides the fluid in his belly, Bart's gums were almost white.NOT a good sign. And, he had quite a few abscessed teeth, and was already missing quite a few.. His vision was also questionable.. My poor boy was also in so much pain. He wanted to lay down, but just couldn't on that cold, stainless steel table. Broke my heart.. Had a conversation w/ vet about the possibilities of Bart recovering... He explained that although it was almost a textbook case of wet FIP (which would mean regular draining), he also was most assuredly *very anemic*. Epogen, transfusions. Also, he explained it could be, lymphosarcoma, cardio-vascular, liver, kidneys - I'm sure you all get the picture. His prognosis was very poor, with NO guarantees. I just remembered the promise I have made to ALL my babies, so I made *the dreaded decision..* My dear vet gave him a tranquilizer prior to the euthanasia solution, and Bart just seemed to pass peacefully, as I stroked him kissed his (big ole) head.. Not a good day.. I *HATE* having to play God.. And, you know, it hurts me just as much when it's a feral/stray.. Just absolutely heartbreaking. No other words can explain it... Hi Beth He was checked out by a vet and there was no infection or mites just the inflammation. A that time he gave Junior a steroid shot and the swelling went down, but it only lasted a couple of days. I do have some Tresaderm that I am going to use on him. It was given to him last spring after he came home from being hit by a car. He did have mites at that time. His ears have been clear ever since then. One thing today he feels great!. He ran after me thinking he was getting another goody, (he did get one). I have not seen him move that fast in ages. Maybe all the supplements he gets is making him feel better. I love my Junior so much. I am hoping he can make it until March 9th when he has a real appointment scheduled. So far all his visits have been sick visits or getting the immuno-regulin shots. Maybe not he is supposed to get the feline distemper shots. He did not get vaccinated when Tiny did because he was sick at that time. One day at a time. Re: Lucy and Michelle/Ear problems
I have 8 other cats 5 are in/out cats, 2 are inside only and one is outside only(her choice). I know it is controversial the Merck Manual says to vaccinate except for FeLV. I do not try to keep them separated because it is less stressful. They are vaccinated against distemper, rabies and FeLV. Tiny did fine with the vaccines he died of something unrelated. I may just do the immuno-regulin. Any other opinions here. Thanks for your opinion. Re: Help needed
Hi Debbie I went through this scenario this past fall started with 11 cats. Two cats became ill. One Died at the vets office was never tested for FeLV but I guarantee based on symptoms he was also FeLV. This prompted testing of Junior who tested positive and was sick with a 106.5 fever. Ok now I have 9 more cats with the high costs of testing and Junior had already cost me $1000 bc he was hit by a car. I worked out something with the vet. They only charged a short visit and tested 4-5 cats at a time plus the Idexx snap test. They further gave me a multicat discount, and then finally Idexx had a rebate at the time so I got refunded $15 from Idexx. The vets office even submitted that paperwork. Here was the bad news 2 more cats tested positive and one also tested for FIV. He was sick when I got him from a shelter and was showing symptoms of being sick again. I did have him PTS. Tiny tested positive, Junior's half brother. Tiny was asymptomatic. Junior was sick with a URI for quite a while following the positive test. Then an eye infection he is mostly blind now due to the fact he already lost sight in the eye where he was hot by a car. However the good news id he is stable now and has outlived the short term life expectancy for FelV cats. I have him on several supplements and he received a course of immuno regulin. Tiny died Xmas day, but I was there and I do not think his FeLv status had anything to do with it. He had some other undiagnosed condition that I could guess at but it would only be a guess. After I had all the cats tested I had them Vaccinated for everything, That was expensive as well. I now have mixed the cats and no other cats have been sick. Daisy my newest baby is BIG TIME in heat. She has been screaming for two days. She peed on my pillow last night and gain this morning marked my headboard.Thank god her appt is tomorrow. The clinic was booked 7 weeksin advance. She had never been in heat when I made the appointment. Junior has a checkup next week. I need to call his vet this week to see if she will refill his Tresaderm. It was fron another vet clinic where he was treated for his car injuries. He ears have gotten better since I started using it but I am out now. It seems he did have some kind of ear infection. Thats about it. Good luck with your loved ones. Sally Davis On 2/26/07, Debbie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I actually spoke to the local humane societies. I have been fortunate enough to find a rescue organization in my area that helps me with costs sometimes. I've developed a relationship with them and they trust me enough to know that I have the cats best interest at heart. If they have enough money in the till, they will pay for spay/neuters and some vet care for new arrivals. If they don't, or if it's a procedure that their group wouldn't normally allocate funds to, they'll let me use their group discount, (at the vet that gives discounts to them), put the cost on their bill and then I pay them back in the form of a donation. This helps me because I get the discount and also can deduct the donation on my taxes. It helps them because they can show my donation on their books, and of course they appreciate my efforts to help the animals. Call around to all the groups in your area and tell them what you do for the cats in your care. Let them know that you don't expect them to do anything for you, but would be grateful for suggestions and any help they might provide. They might have extra food/supplies to share, or they might be willing to let you use their vets for things like testing, vaccinations, or spay/neuters. Some groups do their own vaccinations and testing, they may be willing to test your guys at their cost. It never hurts to ask and usually it's so refreshing to them to get calls from people that are doing their part to help animals. So many people call rescues to dump what should be their own responsibility in the rescue's lap and expect them to rush over and take care of whatever problem they need help with never taking into account how overwhelmed and under resourced they are. Approach them in the right way, and I'm sure you'll find a valuable resource. I'm glad if the group has helped you to feel less alone in the good work you are doing. It's been a Godsend to me

Hi all Daisy was spayed yesterday. She did just fine. She got outside a total of 3 times in the past month waiting for her appointment. The last time was this past saturday. I chased her for 25 minutes. The tomcat was chasing as well. Finally Ittle Bitty, my big ol loverboy chased tom off and it confused her. I was able to catch her. I was most concerned that she would go off for a few days and miss her appointment. I would have had her fixed even if ton had caught her. The clinic was celebrating spay neuter day so I got 5$ off the cost was $30. I also got a t-shirt as well. They are having a vaccination clinic in april and the FeLV test is only $22. I won't test the other cats again unless there seems to be a problem. So far all the cats are healthy. I think Junior is my only pos and the others lucked out. Of course losing 3 was not lucking out. I have not been sleeping well the past few days, so I am not up to date. I will have to wait to read the posts. Thanks everyone, Sally Davis --

Re: Debbie's multible testing need
I don't know where you live, but the clinic that just spayed my Daisy is having a vaccination clinic in April. The cost of the testing is $22.00. I am in Richmond, Va. I wish they did this back in the fall. I am not sure it would have helped me. I too felt I was in an emergency situation having just lost a cat and the second tested positive with similiar symptoms as the cat I lost. I have a total of nine cats now. I started last year with 11 lost 4 gained two more. I also mix them now, but Speedy has been sneezing and I am trying to keep him out of Junior's (my pos) room. I am hoping it is allergies for Speedy I know mine are acting up. Tree pollen season. Speedy has all his vacinations. If I remember corectly he does go through sneezing periods. We just aren't the type to turn a blind eye if we see them suffering. I think we should know if we would be exposing them. It was the vets idea to test them all. Seems to me they could be a bit cheaper but the ones in our area aren't. We definitely enjoy the ones we have. They are our babies: Their names are as follows: Frodo, Arwen, Daffodil, Tigger, Algernon, Koko, Lady, Sneezy, Petey, Patches, Cassie, Fuzzy, Solomon, and Sheba. Seven were found in Dayton Ohio in a trash bin. The first 3 were long hair, the next 4 still had the unbilical cords attached. Solomon and Sheba we brought back to Ohio from Missouri. They were kittens living in a field with horses. They were eating horse feed and insects (starving). Sneezy was a neighbors cat we think. They went away for the winter and left her outside. She came to our house and was pregnant. She gave birth on our new loveseat! We also have a black lab called Charlie and at Christmas my husband found a chocolate lab puppy (around 4 weeks old) in a box alongside the road. He called her Tegan. She is now up to 26 lbs! There are days when we feel like we live in a zoo, but we would not trade them for anything. Funny thing is my husband came to the U.S. from England. He never really liked cats (much more of a dog person). Now wherever he goes they all follow him. He can not even use the restroom without Daffodil going with him! She paws at the door until he leaves her in. I call him the Pied Piper of Yorkshire. Fat chance on that she has already managed to get outside a few times. The incision is so small I don't see how they do the surgery. It is quite amazing. She is amazing that she was neg for FeLV as she was so young when being exposed. She never caught theURI from the other cats either. Lionel was her best buddy. He had the URI and later tested pos for FeLV and FIV. I think he had FIV when adopted bc he has a wound that took months to heal. I think he caught the FeLV here. Re: 14 cats going to be tested
Hi debbie Here is wishing you luck with the testing. I was not as lucky as others inthe group I wound up with 3 of 11 cats positive. I am down to one positive at this time. He is symptomatic, but doing ok right now. He sees the Vet Friday and will probably get vaccinated unless the thing with his ears is an infection. I am hoping it is an infection bc it could be something much worse. His ears do feel hot from time to time and he looks like a Scottish Fold cat bc the ears are bent forward. This is not normal for him. All my positive were yellow cats. I wonder too about genetics. Only two of the cats were ralated. Half brothers. Re: Sally and Junior
Hi Nina, I wish Dr Staunton had been there today. I had many questions, she knows Junior better than Dr Larrick. Junior has had the swellings for almost two months now and everything is the same. Actually overall he is better than two months ago especially with the weight gain. I decided against vaccinations. Dr Larrick was ok with that. I have another cat right now who has mild symptoms of a URI. ALthough I do my best to keep them apart. Their is bound to be some small exposure. Junior has not caught whatever Silver has. I think this is a good sign that he has some defenses left. I will have to see if I can get a hold of Dr Staunton next week to get her opinion. She is the Junior vet at this practice. My guess is right out of vet school. I will say that Dr Larrick felt that were it Lymphoma Junior would be displaying other symptoms. Junior at least feels well enough to be lovey dovey these days. I am glad for that. Thanks, Sally On 3/9/07, Nina [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Sally, I don't understand why your vet would suggest a wait and see approach with a felv pos cat. Expecting that Junior's immune response will be enough to combat swollen lymph nodes of unknown origin seems foolhardy and down right dangerous to me. As far as further vaccinations... I wouldn't even consider inoculating Junior for ANYTHING. If it were me, I wouldn't consider inoculating Junior EVER. Re: Opinions appreciated
Hi Debbie, Where I live outdoor cats are all considered ferals. They don't count them as part of the household. I found this interesting. A vet told me that. I have always know we don't own cats they own us. My cats for the most part have picked me out. The last one literally showed up under my porch. He knew I would help him and he is now an inside cat. I have found with my limited exposure to rescue groups and I would assume the same with humane societies, the tend to be a bit strongly opinionated if not even being accusing. I am sure it comes from what they see. They do not know us at all, but it tends to put one off. I had a bad experience with a rescue group when I was trying to place a dog that I had not adopted but my mom did and she gave the dog to me after my dad died. I was not at home most of the time, I did not have a fenced yard and what this dog required was attention that I could not give her. Well you would have though I had committed a crime the way I was treated and no good solutions were offered other than I should crate her. I know now that it would have helped but was not the solution. Casey came up with her won solutions. She found a family with kids who lived nearby. She would go there and play. I later found where she was going. They offered to keep her for the weekend while I was away. When I came back I asked if they wanted her and they said yes. It was the best thing that happend to her. gotta go my boyfriend just fell, blames me for it. Another story Sally On 3/9/07, Debbie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks Sally. Our 14 cats are all spayed/ neutered, clean, well groomed, have all their shots, don't fight, etc. You would tell someone they were over on the limit of kids they have, so why pets? I realize I'm probably being too sensitive, but if you don't know how someone lives I don't belive you should assume they have too many pets. I hope Junior improves. I did not mean to offend anyone here. I am just saying they were only accusatory and not helpful. Casey was a much happier dog after she found a home where she had kids and much attention. Are you saying I should have kept her locked up all day? This is just a rhetorical question. As I said before Casey came to me after dad died my mother could not handle her. I know many folks have their parents pets euthanized as an option. I would never consider that as an option. If finding Casey a good home where she had children to play with her she lived a long healthy life is a bad thing then I am guilty. She was not my dog and did not want to be my dog, Sometimes animals choose who they want to be with and this is what she did. If i did not care about her I would have not gone and gotten her back from the animal control. They picked her up after she broke lose, She went through a closed window one day while I was at work. It is a wonder she was't cut. Wow, how do you get such a good internet connection from that other planet you must be living on? WHO considers all outdoor cats ferals? Re: correct dose of clindamycin?
Hi Lynette My Cat Junior was given 25 mg (1dropperful) daily for a URI. It took a while but it did clear it up. Junior weighs 11lbs. The information on the package is rather confusing it talks in mg and ml. As best I i read it 1 ml contains 25mg of Clindamycin. It looks like the dose my cat got was on the low end for his weight. The package indicate 1-3 ml per 5lbs of body weight. I am thinking someone else here may better interpret this. Junior tests
I just wanted you to know Junior is having a needle aspiration done this Friday of his lymph nodes which were enlarged at his last appointment. I called his regular vet today because I was not happy that nothing was done last Friday. I want to be proactive not reactive. His lymph nodes are swollen for one of two reasons. I think infection would be better than lymphoma. Either way he needs help. Please pray for my Junior. I upped his Transfer Factor Plus since it has anti-tumor properties. Thanks Sally --
Re: Junior tests
Thanks kelly and everyone for your encouragement. I think the other vet was going on the assumption that Junior's lymph system was doing it's job. I pray that is the case. HI glands have been swollen for about 8 weeks. He seems to have some pain near his left ear. He still eats well although his coat has not looked good since he was dx. This actually goes back to when he was hit by a car. I think maybe it is not so easy for him to groom himself. My bf was feeling bad yesterday and lashed out on me for caring more about the cats than him. It is hard to keep a balance. Junior is actually his cat. Men are not good at showing emotions. He is very hurt by Junior's illness. I said b4 he lost two Himalayan cats to this horrible disease. It must have come from the cattery where he got the kitten. Re: BIG TEST QUESTION
I must be a very unlucky person because I had 3 and probably 4 cats FeLV. Only two were related from litters a year apart. The other two cats were not related to my cats and had recently been adopted. What are the odds of adopting two cats one from a shelter one from an individual and my own two cats who were half brother being Felv positive. My cats were indoor outdoor friendly cats who ate from the same bowls . I also have another cat who is related from yet another litter, she is negative. The older cats faired the best. I am talking 7 years or older. I also think at least 2 maybe three cats had at least one vaccination against Felv that would have been 6 yrs ago. I say probably 4 because the 1st cat to die had symptoms and died at the vet's office after two days of IV antibiotics. He was anemic and jaundiced. He crashed during the night. He did not know who I was it was heart breaking. Pumpkin was not tested, but I feel he was FeLV positive. He was adopted last March. Junior who was being treated for anemia went back to his vet two days later bc of my concern about Pumpkin's death being related. Junior who tested negative about 6 months prior was now positive and had a temp of 106.5. The other two cats who tested positive were adopted that same year after my precious Fluffy was PTS for bone cancer. I still have another cat from the same mother. She was negative. I do not plan to retest unless the other cats show symptoms. The negs were all vaccinated. This all occurred last year. I think at least two cats caught the virus from the others. If not I was unlucky to have adopted two sick cats and have two sick cats. Just the facts at my household. I don't know if this still fits your theory. Junior has his needle aspiration of the lymph nodes tomorrow. Here's hoping it's just and infection. He is experiencing discomfort. Junior has been to the vet and is on Baytril. She will call me back later with results. A cursory exam showed inflammatory tissue and fatty tissue. She may go ahead and send the needle aspiration off to the lab. I am having problems with my computer and was not able to send the email last night. Keep good thought for Junior. Junior's tests
For some reason I did not see an earlier post I made. Maybe it is just how gmail organizes. Sorry if this duplicates the prevoius post. Anyway, Junior had his needle aspiration of his lymph nodes. A quick look indicated inflammatory tissue and fatty tissue. Dr Staunton was going to look at it again later today. I did not hear back from her so I am pretty sure she sent the sample to the lab. She put Junior on Baytril in case it is from infection. If he has lymphoma she may do Metacam on him. I understand there are risks with cats and this drug. The Feline Lymphoma group did not understand the choice of drug. I do know she does not want to use traditional drugs that would suppress his immune system. Junior was actually better after his visit today even though he was stuck a couple times. I think he likes Dr Staunton. He must be a ladies man. The choice of Metacam is bc it has anti inflammatory properties as well as anti tumor properties. Anyone here have any ideas about this drug. I am still hoping it is just infectio, which is bad enough. Thanks for all your prayers. Sally

I know the vet is aware of the danger of this drug. That is why she wanted me to read up on it. At this point I do not know what is causing Juniors lymph nodes to be swollen. I guess I will find out in a few days. I know she will call an oncologist if it proves to be Lymphoma. So we will have a better understanding of what drug choices there are. Metacam is associated with a high risk of kidney failure in cats: The narrow safety margin in cats is reflected in the FDA's Adverse Drug Experience (ADE) reports for Metacam Oral, which summarize drug side effects reported by veterinarians. Of 842 reports for dogs, 19 cases of kidney failure and no deaths were reported. However in 320 cats, 105 cases of kidney failure, 48 deaths and 35 cases resulting in euthanasia have been reported. This clearly indicates that Metacam poses a much greater risk in cats than in dogs. The pdf file, Metacam Risks in Cats, is available at: http://www.persiancats.org/nss-folder/filefolder/MetacamRisksInCats.pdf Some additional anecdotal information is also available at: http://www.persiancats.org/gridlayout/ Unfortunately, some veterinarians have been prescribing Metacam to be used multiple times after dental procedures and for arthritis even though the manufacturer has discouraged multiple use of the medicine. Only the injectable kind is approved for use with cats, and only once. The oral suspension was not approved for use with cats. Junior update-not Lymphoma
Hi Everyone I called the vet today regarding the needle aspiration of the lymph nodes. She is confident that it is not Lymphoma. He has fatty tissue and nutrophils indicating inflammation from infection. The Baytril will help with the infection. She gave him a months supply. I reordered his Transfer Factor Plus. I think that has helped keep him stable. I must say Junior is quite the fighter. His lymph node behind his ear has been swollen for a while. The swelling would usually go down at night. He seems to has less sight than before. Most of the swelling is on the side of the good eye. I am hoping his lack of sight is temporary. The Matacam, she would only give twice a week and would be given to further reduce inflammation and pain. She wants to give the Baytril time to work before possibly using the Metacam. I feel better that Junior has seen Dr Staunton. Thanks for all your prayers and help. The Fight goes on…. Sally Davis

He's been twitching off and on for a while. He's been on Norvasc for high blood pressure for a while but apparently his dose is no longer high enough, his BP was 230 at the vets yesterday. I called the vet in while he was twitching and she is very concerned about his BP, she told me to give him double his dose when I got home, he had already had his usual dose that morning. Then she said to give his regular dose in this AM and another dose in the afternoon today. He will get double what he's been getting from now on. I didn't feed or mess with him the rest of the night yesterday, and he twitched off and on all night. He was very unsteady on his feet and slept for the most part. This morning he is not himself still. He is not as unsteady and not twitching that I've noticed yet but seems very slow and just looks like he doesn't feel good. I gave him his metachloprimide and am going to feed him shortly, I'm going to wait and give him his BP med close to the time the vet opens so if I have to run him down they will be open, they open at 6:30AM, it's 6AM now. Please pray that whatever is going on, hopefully it is just his BP and the increased BP meds will control it, if not, that whatever it is we'll figure it out and can help him feel better. Re: Need Advice - Concerning Fred [kind of long]
Hi Belinda I am not sure how to tell you to deal with your vet and your anger. I have a hard time with these issues as well. I like Junior's vet Dr Staunton. It is just I am not always able to get into see her. Dr Larrick is a country vet doing what country vets do. He admistered first aid. He is not vaccination crazy so he does not push them. I get the feeling for the most part he does not thinkl annual vaccinations are neccessary. He is a better vet for well visits. After a week on Baytril Junior's appetite is returning. I had a pet communicator speak to him the other day and she said he was weak and hollow. He said his food tasted bland. She did not know I had bought different food bc I was not where I could get his regular food. Needless to say I went by Petsmart when I got off work and got his Natural Choice, not in the recall. He does not like chunks, thank God. This morning his appetite was back. He got his wet food with supplements and then went on to eat dry food. Which he has not done for a while. Keep the prayers and good vibes for Junior as I will do for Fred and all the rest of our precious cats in need. Good Luck with the visit. I have an appointment at 11:30 just to check his blood pressure, I made it before I found the lump, but am calling the second they open and telling them I want to see Dr. Munson the minute she walks in the door, her first appointment will have to wait, as far as I'm concerned this is an emergency and this time they are going to get it right The lump is three bigger than it has ever been and I know Fred is fed up and feeling pretty crappy, I hope he can find the fight to get over this hump, please, please send him prayers for strength and the will to keep fighting. HI Thanks for the update. Here I am feeding a sick cat and have to worry about poisoning him. I know the cat food I feed Junior has some varieties produced at Menu foods. Now I am reading labels to make sure there is no wheat. Now just a thought about the toxicity of this compound. The was in wheat, and a small amount of wheat goes into the production of cat food, the wheat must have had a large amout of poison in it to cause acute renal failure in some animals. So far we are not removing the eye as he does not seem to be in pain from it. My cat Fluffy also has glaucoma from a traumatic injury. The eye was removed he let me know that it hurt. I think it would depend on why your cat had glaucoma to begin with. I cannot see it spreading to the good eye. Like the group said a blind cat does just fine. Hi Marylyn, My thought as well. The fire started in the laundry room maybe it smoldered first. I am sorry so many kitties lost their lives and glad the firemen risked their lives for the dogs. sally On 4/7/07, Marylyn [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This may or may not help..if they died of CO2 they died gently. The dog area was away from the start of the fire. Apparently, the fire started near the cat area, and the fire was so bad when they got there, that the roof collapsed. If ANY good can come from this, it will be that they can rebuild with the inserance $ and with the support of the community, build a state of the art center. The building was so old, but they had fixed it up really cute. What a crappy time to have this happen...kitten season. The newspaper made it sound better than it was. My friend Bill went up there to check on some cats, and got this straight from the staff there. I am hugging mine extra today. Re: A couple of pictures I took of Tomi today
Hi Cassandra, Tomi looks like my Tiny who passed this past Christmas day. Tiny liked to cuddle with Ittle Bitty just like your Tomi and Kisa. They are both beautiful. Re: Fires in the home/Update on Jax cats and dogs
I had a close call with our dryer years ago. It caught fire at the outlet. Loose connection. We were at home so not damage to the house. Only I went w/o a dryer for year bc I could not afford to have the outlet replaced. I have since moved into a house but I will not leave the house with the dryer running. I never thought of the dishwasher. I am usually home when I run it . I Will think twice before leaving it running. I am glad more kitties made it out as well. Sally and Junior On 4/15/07, wendy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey guys, An addition to the warning to never leave a dryer running while away: never leave your dishwasher running while you're gone either! It can also catch fire. My apartment complex ten years ago experienced this exact thing, and I didn't believe it until I actually spoke with a fireman who verified it. So happy they found more kitties alive!!! That fireman probably saved their lives! I am going to send him snail mail tomorrow. :) Wendy --- dede hicken [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am heading for bed, but I just called a friend who is a HS volunteer. He was working with them to find homes for 4 feleuk+ cats. He said Scooter was an orange tabby? Right now he has no info, but the cats were housed in a room near the cattery. This morning they found a cat sitting on top of the rubble. Later today they discovered a black kitten peeping through the rubble. Later a large gray one came running out of the woods and sat where his cage had been. He was VERY hungry! These 3 are fine. That brings the total to at least 11 who have survived. 4 of the survivors are in critical care, and the local vets have all chipped in with supplies. The other cats that did survive have all been adopted by volunteers saying they will never be in a cage again The young fireman who was hurt did not leave when the command was given. They ran through the cat area opening cages, then smashing windows and breaking open doors trying to shoo them out. He went back in the last time to grab 2 puppies, and the roof caved in on him. I will tell you how to contact him tomorrow. Fire started in the dryer. Word is that either lint caught fire, or the timer failed and it overheated. Never leave a dryer on when you're away!
