Re: [Felvtalk] Dexter
Our cat was put on LTCI, Interferon, and Prednisolone. The Pred keeps his hematocrit normal. Christy Stetler On Jun 21, 2011, at 7:42 AM, Ben Williams drsiebl...@gmail.com wrote: Hello, everyone... This is my first post to the list -- I just joined a few minutes ago. I'm writing in regards to my cat, Dexter. Dexter was diagnosed with FeLV and FIV this past October when he suffered a severe bout of life-threatening anemia. By the time we found a vet who had any idea what was going on with Dex (We had a slew of ridiculous diagnoses; including heartworm and herpes), he was in need of a blood transfusion. The transfusion (at a whopping $2200) and Acemannan treatment saved Dex's life and he bounced back within a matter of weeks. All has been great with Dex - he's been on Interferon Alpha 2B since and has been in seemingly great health. Until, that is, last week. After seeing Dex start to show minute signs of anemia again, a quick trip to the doctor confirmed that the infection was active and that Dex was heading back down the same path as last October. Since then, we've been racking our brains trying to figure out what to do for Dex. Our Doctor, Dr. Benjamin Wright at Lakewood Vet Center in Dallas, has been exceptional. He's been open to just about anything we can try to help Dex. As such, we started Dex on Immunoregulin this past Friday and Dex just had his second injection this morning. Unfortunately, Dex has seemed to go down hill in the last 24 hours. He was at a relative high point on Sunday, seemed very happy and lively, but as of yesterday and today, he is lethargic again and obviously not happy at all, while his breathing has also become more labored. Dr. Wright and I have been trying to contact the folks who make the T-Cell Immunomodulator drug, but can't seem to get a call back from them. Obviously, as I'm sure you all know, Carrington Labs, the makers of Acemannan, are officially out of business as well, so that doesn't seem to be an option. We also contacted the vet hospital that makes the Interferon Omega packet available and haven't had a response from them. Where do we go from here... Dex is only a year and a half old and is such a special cat. We just want to do everything we can to help him. We'd do another blood transfusion, but that's just too expensive at the moment. Both eventually succumbed to lymphomas of different types. Brother and sister. We will always miss them. I don't think it's necessary to have a specialized vet...just a vet who is special and willing to listen. I talked to a wonderful consulting vet I know re Miss Eleanor (formerly Sabrina) his first recommendation was Internal Medicine at U of WI, but then said that this would probably not be necessary as long as she is asymptomatic. That regular blood work, every 6 months, would be the main requirement. Certainly hope that is the case as just a couple of visits to UW would be well over $1000! I would like to combine the services of a good regular vet, which I think I have, altho he freely admits that is practice does not see a lot of FeLeuk kitties - which is probably pretty much the case with all non-specializing vets, I would think, with those of a holistic vet as well. Do any of you do that? Are any of you in Wisconsin? She was also on Lasix, Lysine, iron, b vitamins, Interferon. She always came into the kitchen and waited for me to give her the meds, but the last few days she began to clamp her jaw, like enough. She was being syringe fed, she couldn't eat-the mass in her neck got so large and hard. Her eyes became empty and she just wanted to hide, she was miserable. When I came home from work last night, I knew it was time. Thank you to the wonderful vets and staff at Sacramento Cat Hospital for staying late so we could help Rosie join her man, Murphy at the bridge-he passed in October from Lymphoma and anemia. Rosie is our 6th and last FeLV kitty-her 4 brothers passed in their first year from anemia, despite all our efforts. I have never felt so defeated and empty in my life. I did not have a clue about FeLV when we rescued the feral babies. It has been a long and sad 2 years, Rosie and Murphy each just made it to 2 1/2 yrs old. Bless all of you fighting this battle-it is a long, and difficult journey, but these babies deserve all the love in the world. Nothing has worked to save mine, maybe prolonged their lives by what...minutes, days, months-I don't know. Two and a half years ago, I had never heard of this damn disease-maybe because I hadn't had a cat in over a decade, just Aussies and horses. God bless the really special people who take in positive kitties knowing there is heartache up the road, but have saved them from being euthanized because of a positive test-they're not all accurate.
