I'm telling this story to everyone I know - they love it! Now let's hope
that when the TV station does a follow-up, they describe Leslie's car
again. It will be so tough for her to commute to work and school.

Re: Stolen car (non)update - another idea

2006-10-17 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
I'm thinking the local media would be more interested in the requests of
viewers from the local market - so that if Leslie and her friends call
in and request a story - and tell them how fascinating to local viewers
it will be and make them want to help - it would have a greater impact
than calls of people from hundreds of miles away who can't watch their
station anyway.

just a thought, Bonnie in WI

 Leslie:

I think Nina has a good suggestion regarding calling
the phone. You can also have people text message your
phone as well. The person may read the text messages
since this does not require speaking into the phone.
I recent lost my cell phone at Jewel Grocery Store
when grocery shopping. Since I use my cell phone for
rescue and the rescue group business, I get alot of
phone calls. Well after a short period of time, one
of my friends call my direct home number and told me
that my cell phone was at Jewel. I did not even
notice that I had lost the cell phone. I just thought
that it was being a quiet night?? You see my cell
phone ringer for caller I.D. is a recording of six 10
day old baby kittens screaming to be feed. So say the
least, Jewel was delighted to hear from me and that I
was coming to get the phone. The phone was driving
them crazy and Jewel's customer service text message
my friend that I had lost my phone. That night was
busy with phone calls that was screaming baby kittens
 to be feed!

So maybe the person that took the car may get curious
about all the phone calls and text messages. Maybe
the person will try to read the text messages and see
they are about the cats. I know it is a long shot but
 it happen to me!

 Precious Pets

 P. S. Another suggestion would be to offer a reward
for their safe return in the text messages.

Yes Kelly, post the numbers to the local media for
  Leslie and I for one
will call and plead for them to run the story. I
  had another idea,
Leslie. Why don't you place a box ad in the paper?
  You should put one
in the lost/found section as well, but find out how
  much it costs to
place an ad somewhere in the paper itself. When you
  get the salesperson
on the phone, tell them your story and see if they
  will put someone on
the phone who might find it newsworthy. I'd start
  with something like,
Cats with medical condition abducted in stolen
  car!. Offer a reward.
Describe the car. Don't just write emails, keep
  calling the TV stations
and the newspapers. Go down there if you have to.
  This is off the
wall, but have you thought about calling your cell
  phone and see if
someone answers? I'm just sick thinking about those
  sweet angels and
what you and they are going through. Did you get my
  post about the
animal communicators? You may think I'm nuts, but
  what can it hurt to
  try it?

Monday mornings I pack everything up including the cats, go back

This morning I loaded in my groceries, my school books, the cats,
go back in kiss Ed goodbye, grab my breakfast in a tupperware from
the fridge and go back outside to find someone in my car backing it
out of the driveway. The doors were unlocked, but there was no key

up, yelling, hey and get out and banging on the windshield, I
in fact, smashed the tupperware against it, having no other weapons

are cats in there, but they didn't stop. Ed heard me yelling and
by the time I got back inside, he was on the phone with 911.

As indoor cats they don't wear collars, though both are
microchipped. They ride well in the car as long as they're loose,
so they were loose. I don't know which is more likely, them to get
thrown out, or to be kept in. Satch is probably talking the
thief's ear off because he didn't get fed before we left. I am so
scared that they'll have been thrown out. Satch is a big guy, was
found on the streets, he can handle what is likely to present

have no idea why that item of all that he could have (my overnight

that even through this stress I still have to study. ha.
Ironically the 20 lb biology book was probably the most valuable
item in the car, not that its street value would amount to much.

Naturally, I've spent the morning searching that area to see if
the cats might have been tossed there, too, but haven't found
anything. Satch knows his name and comes to it, so I hope that
 they at least stay together.

Pray that the police call ( I have Ed's cell phone, mine was in
the car, but maybe they'll be able to use it's tracking device to
locate it ), and pray that they have good news. Picture Satch and
Beatrix oblivious to my concerns and sleeping on the back seat, or
hanging out on a nice porch waiting for me to find them. Pray that
they not be stressed, but get back to me after a harmless adventure
on their end. please pray that I see them again and that they are
 unharmed.

I felt so positive this morning, but as the hours pass, it's hard
 not to
feel frantic again. I hope that the piece aired on channel 2
 tonight will
help. I'm running out now to distribute some posters, then I've
 got to get
home to study some before the test tomorrow. I'll check in again
 with the
news desks. Do you know if one channel airs something does that
 makes the
 rest less likely to?

My big hope is the Oregonian newspaper. I was told by the Humane
Societythat they couldn't send something out to the volunteer list
 unless it was
OHS (Oregon Humane Society) related. I said but I'm OHS related!
 The
woman is very nice, so I'm hoping that if there is a case for rule
bendingthat this is it. She certainly personally commiserated with
 me. I'll try
again tomorrow, maybe as things get a bit more desparate, she'll be
morewilling to help, though I'd certainly rather things not get any
moredesparate. I just hope that they aren't locked in the car
 somewhere remote.

If work can continue to be flexible, I'm going to take a long lunch
tomorrowand hit the shelters to peer into the cages.

Words can not express my gratitude to you all. As I'd written a
 couple of
you, the shock and raw feelings of the actual theft have more than
beensalved by you - the feelings of distrust and anger at the world
 in general
have been outyelled by all of your open generosity and continued
support.Things will not be all right again until they are back
 home, but at least I
know that evil is not winning in the long run.

 Thank you,
 Lesie

oh guys, my heart is so heavy and I think that my stinging eyes
 might just
make me too tired to actually sleep tonight. I have read all of
 your posts
and printed them to go over tonight and make sure that I follow all
advice. I'll put below what I sent to news stations and
 newspapers, please
send revisions to make it better. Do you think that I can resend
 it to them
tomorrow? I'll also call tomorrow those that I sent to today and
 send to
more that I think of. Of course as soon as it was sent I thought
 of ways to
make it better, but I just wanted to get something off quickly.

I'm so exhausted, and I've had to deal with regular stuff too like a
replacement driver's license (trust me, the DMV is NOT where you
 want to be
in this deflated mood - you actually feel like you belong there)
 and phone
and rental car and prescriptions. Too bad they had to retake my
 photo at
the DMV and now I'll have to remember this day.

If the cats weren't involved I'd just be angry. As I walked out to
catchhim taking the car, as I touched the car, as I know that he
 heard my voice,
that they heard my voice, my feelings of what if, what if, are so
overwhelming. But as he took it. As he took them. As he drove
 away with
the beings that I swore to protect, that I promised them I would
 protect, as
he took them farther, is still taking them farther as minutes go into
minutes, my despair, my hyperventilation is just going and going.
 I don't
blame myself, it is so absurd. How could I have known? I couldn't
 have, so
I don't blame myself. But I don't know how I'll be able to sleep
tonightknowing that they are out there. That it is raining and I
 don't know where
 they are.

Oh, I keep forgetting to mention, I am in Portland, OR. They were
takenfrom Vancouver, WA, I live in Portland.

I don't want to take an Ambien tonight, because what if the police
 call, but
 I know that I won't sleep. As I don't have a computer at home
 there is
nothing that I can do, but wait to get back to work and do more.

I lay my head on all of your shoulders tonight and ask that you
 send your
furbabies spirits to be with Satch and Beatrix. And maybe one or
 two to
 sleep next to me tonight.

Hideyo, I hear you. I will find them. I will get them back. And
 they will
be okay. I feel the thread. I feel it going to them and
 protecting them.
 I feel you all.

I don't know anyone could do this with a child in the car. It
 would be
 even more unbearable.

Anyway, on to class, no more to do tonight.

 Leslie

 ---

 Hello,

My name is Leslie Nies and my car was stolen this morning at 6:30
 am. I was
loading up my car getting ready to drive home from a weekend at my
boyfriends (he lives in Vancouver, I live in Portland) - which
includedovernight bag, book bag, and my two pet cats, Satchmo and
 Beatrix. I went
inside to say goodbye and when I came back out, someone was backing
 my car
out the driveway. The doors were unlocked, but the keys were in my
pocket,so they must have hotwired it. I ran toward them yelling
 hey and get
out and started banging on the windshield as they put it in drive.
 But
 they kept accelerating.

My boyfriend was already on the phone with the police when I got back
inside. Yes, they stole my car, but they also stole my cats! I
 can only
believe that they didn't see them. It's been suggested to me by a
 couple of
people that you might be interested in doing a story on it, and as
 far as
I'm concerned, anything that might help me get them back is worth
 it. I've
attached a picture of each of them, there are more on my phone, but
 that was
 in the car also.

They are just the best cats and I am going out of my mind worrying
aboutfinding them now. They are both leukemia positive, which
 means that they
have compromised immune systems (and why they are indoor only) and
thoughthey are currently healthy and rambunctious are on a
 preventive vitamin. I
don't care about the car or the stuff in it, I just want my cats
 back. Both
are microchipped, but neither have collars as they are indoor only
cats.Let me tell you a little about them.

Satchmo is a 6-yr old brown tabby cat. I rescued him from the Cat
AdoptionTeam in Sherwood two years ago. I started out fostering
 him, but ended up
adotping him. When he came to me, he had a very severe kitty cold
 that he
needed to be nursed through and immediately following that

Perhaps the cats are still in the car - we need the description of the

If Leslie can tell me the make and model of the car I will tell my niece

OT: air travel with pets

2006-09-13 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
This topic came up earlier, if I remember correctly. There is an article
on flying with pets in the September issue of Consumer Reports, p.8
called When the Fur Flies.
The article mentions a web-site of the Department of Transportation
which lists incidents: airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/reports/index.htm

I'm very upset right now. I was walking out to get the mail and
 my
neighbor's mail (he's out of town) when I heard a lot of yelling
 and turned around in
time to see a dog going after Mama Kitty - in MY yard on MY
 sidewalk. She
was wild with fear and well she should have been. I dropped the
 mail - it
went everywhere - and started running after that dog screaming
 N!

Mama climbed up the big oak more than 8 ft but then she fell and
 hit the
ground hard and that horrible dog picked her up in his mouth.
 She's just a tiny
thing. She got away and ran up the arbor in the back that has to
 be 10ft
tall and I chased that sorry black dog away. I got her down from
 the arbor and
she ran to the backyard - terrified.

I just stood with her a moment and talked to her and then she ran
 to the
back window pawing to get in. I picked her up and carried that
 sweet girl
inside and she's in here now with eyes fully dilated. Keeps
 looking out the
window. With FeVL she does NOT need this kind of stress.

Those sorry neighbors haven't even checked to see if Mama is ok.
 I am
furious but trying to be calm for her sake. I don't think she has
 any broken skin
or broken bones but it is probably too soon to tell if she is
 really hurt
because she is going on adrenalin. I've a good mind to say
 something to them
about it. I could hear the mother yelling 'who let the dog out'
  but that
doesn't do much for Mama Kitty.

Thanks for letting me rant - I am so upset.

Re: To Lance Re: Close Encounter between a pos. and a neg.

2006-08-10 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
Dear Lance,
I also don't think you have to worry, but you may want to get your
kitty re-tested after awhile. As far as I know, the virus can be spread
by saliva (mutual grooming, using the same food dishes, bites) or
through using the same litter boxes. But the virus only lives a short
time in the open air.

Three of my six cats become infected with the virus when I brought
home a kitten who initially tested negative on the ELISA (I'm told this
is rare, more often a young kitten will test positive then negative if
the mother was positive).
I had all the cats tested: three tested positive, one threw off the
virus and two did not; they became ill and died within two years. Three
others tested negative and are fine.

None of my cats had been vaccinated against FELV - they are indoor
cats and I had not mixed my new kitten with them until he was tested.
And then we had that rare inaccurate test result.

I know some list members do mix their cats - I assume the negative
kitties are all vaccinated. So - I just thought I would add my
experience to the mix.

 Lance,

I just read this and I'm sure it's too late for my
opinion, but I don't think you had anything to worry
about at all. The virus is just not that easy to
spread from what we can tell. How did your Callie
 fare after surgery?

  Hi everyone

I hope this is just me being paranoid. It's easy to
  be paranoid when
dealing with FeLV+, at least for me. As some of you
  may recall, my
Ember is FeLV+, and my mom picked up a negative
  kitten (Callie) a
number of months ago. Ember still lives in my room,
  so she is
isolated from the negs of the house. Yesterday, I
  opened my door to
bring in food, and Ember started out. I was able to
  stop her for a
bit, but I was holding her in by pressing her with
  my leg against the
door frame, which is something I really didn't want
  to do. She got
out and escaped part of the way down the hall before
  being chased by
Callie the kitten. Callie wants to play with
  everyone, and she tried
to jump on Ember. When Ember ended up cornered at
  the end of the
hall, she let out a nice hiss. Fortunately, she was
  facing away from
Callie when she did this. I rounded up Ember and got
  her back into my
room. Callie, I'm sure, was disappointed.

Most of you probably think this doesn't sound like a
  big deal, and it
might not be. Callie has had all of her FeLV+ vax
  including boosters.
She should be good for one year. My concern is that
  Callie is going
in tomorrow to be spayed, and that if she even got
  the tiniest bit of
virus into her system, the immune suppression that
  will result from
the surgery might give it some advantage that we
  don't want it to have.

Do you think there is any cause for concern, based
  on your own
anecdotal experiences? Should we not have the
  surgery tomorrow? My
mom is in a hurry to get her spayed, as Callie's
  come into a sort of
pseudo heat two times, and she's just turned five
  months old. Your
  thoughts?

Nina,
It's for my tiny hypernatremia kitty who never grew, Sylvie. She's
almost 13 now and the vet says she has CRF. She has recommended
phosphorus binders. I think I may start them fairly soon but she is
eating a little better and has to gain some weight - she's down to 2 lbs
14 oz. She grinds her teeth when she eats and leaves a thin layer of
food on her dish. She just spent a week in the emergency animal hospital
where she was on IV fluids and is much better (it cost a paycheck and a
half :) ) but I love my tiny half-meezer - make that a half snow-show
meezer.

 Hi Everyone,

A week ago when I took Pippin to the vet, I asked my vet about
the upcoming second FeLV test that Pippin is going to have in
September. I asked her if she agrees that cats can throw off the
virus after having tested positive. She said she does not believe
so, that she believes that cats who test negative after having
tested positive are harboring the virus and that it can show up
at any time in the future.

We are going to keep Pippin regardless of her FeLV status. I do
wonder if this vet's belief system could affect the care my girl
receives if she does develop symptoms. What kinds of questions
should I ask on behalf of Pippin? What should I look for in a vet
 treating a cat with FeLV?

 Hello,

My parent's cat tested positive for FeLV as a young kitten- she was
 a
stray and we assume that she was infected by her mother. Six months
later she was tested again and was negative. We were told that it
 was
possible that she either fought it off, or that the antibodies in
 her
system were actually her mother's and that she never really
 contracted
the disease. She is now due to have a vaccination for FeLV, but we
 are
concerned that this will have negative effects, given her history,
 or
that she does not need it as she should have antibodies already in
 her
system. Is there any information about how such a situation should
 be
 handled?

Thanks for any info or leads on the subject!

Bailey left us at 6:20 this evening. He took a bad turn
 for the
worse late last night and when I took him in this morning for his
surgery it was evident he wasn't in good enough shape. We gave him
fluids for a couple hours because he was dehydrated, his blood
 pressure
was 60 and his temperature went from 103 yesterday to 98 today, his
blood work was normal except his platelet count was low so he
 wasn't
clotting and suregery was out of the question unless we could get
 his
platelet count up. After two hours of fluids and a blood
 transfusion
his platelets came up but his temperature was now 94, 96 puts
 kitties at
risk for heart failure and she couldn't even get a blood pressure.

My vet said we have 3 options, we could continue the fluids and
 support
and see if things changed and if they did he could have the surgery
 tomorrow.
Go ahead with the surgery and get in and out as quickly as possible
 or
 she could euthanise him.

I asked her what she honestly thought of his condition, she said
 she
though he was leaving on his own, I agreed. We talked, I asked her
 what
to expect if he was going to die and she told me what the likely
scenarios would be, she gave me a syringe of pain meds incase it
 got
really bad for him, it would basically knock him out so he wouldn't
suffer and pass on his own, she had a dinner engagement but told me
 to
call if she was needed. I had told Bailey it was his decision to
 stay
or go, and told him to do what was best for him. I brought him
 home on
the fluids to keep supporting him and if he did turn for the better
 we
would consider the surgery later. His breathing got worse just
 taking
him to the car so I knew in my heart we didn't have long.

We had about an hour, he was home with us and we were with him when
 he
left. He is whole now and FeLV free for the first time. We were
 so
lucky to have him for 11 years, his birthday was Monday. I will
 miss
his bouncy, happy personality. He was so special and I learned so
 much
thanks to him. He was our only positive and the one that was
responsible for my learning everything I have about FeLV+, he has
 helped
me save many positives and for that I thank him. I miss my little
Baidely boys so much already ... take care all. Give your special

Yep, here comes my opinion- I had a kitten that was a false negative.
When his virus activated after a dental, when he had anesthesia, he
infected three of mine - none of whom had been vaccinated. Two died and
one reverted to negative within a month.
This was my first experience with FELV - I had no idea that my little
one was now positive and shedding the virus - I just know that almost
suddenly he was slowing down and becoming ill.

don't because I have foster kitties that belong to the rescue

Easter Lilies toxic to cats!

2006-04-12 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
Easter Lilies

Holly Nash, DVM, MS
Veterinary Services Department, Drs. Foster Smith, Inc.

Easter lilies, and other lilies can be toxic to cats, causing kidney
failure and death. All parts of the lily can be toxic, and eating just
one leaf can result in severe poisoning. After eating a portion of an
Easter lily, a cat will generally vomit and become depressed within 2
hours. The vomiting may subside, but the cat will not eat and continue
to become more depressed.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if you know or suspect your cat
has eaten any part of an Easter lily. Treatment includes causing the cat
to vomit by giving an emetic, administering activated charcoal and a
cathartic (stimulates bowel movements), and giving subcutaenous or
intravenous fluids. A cat must be treated within 18 hours of ingesting
the plant, or the damage to the kidneys will be irreversible.

Other lilies which belong to this same plant species and are also toxic
include tiger lilies, rubrum or Japanese showy lilies, and various day
lilies. Many other bulb plants are also poisonous such as daffodils and
hyacinths.

As long as you are sure Ember's virus hasn't activated, the kitten

to worry, but I joined years ago when my orange boy (false negative)

 Hello all,

My mother is considering adopting a kitten that needs a home. To
 the
best of my knowledge, the kitten is FeLV negative. It's only six
weeks or so old. Right now, my FeLV+ cat, Ember, is living in my
room, and is kept away from the others. She's had a few jailbreaks,

but I can be much more careful with her than I have been. The other

cats in the house tested negative with ELISA a few weeks ago (see
 the
Ember thread for the whole story).

Anyway, I know generally what vets and others think of having a
negative in a positive's house. I'm isolating Ember. However, the
kitten will not have had her shots, and probably won't be ready for

her first FeLV vax for another month. Even with Ember being
 isolated,
and the kitten having no direct or indirect exposure (i.e. no one
shares food, food bowls, boxes, water), do we run any risk of
 having
the kitten come up positive just by living in the same house as my
 girl?
 Thanks,

 Lance

I would probably have agreed to euthanase in that situation by
 choice to
help my kittie to stop suffering if they were not breathing
 properly due to
tumors and lung fluid at age 16 but I can't imagine that choice
 being taken away
from me. I would be the one helping them in their time of need and
 certainly
there to help comfort them as they pass to the bridge.

It actually sickens me to think a vet considered he had the right
 to
euthanase without discussing this with you and giving you the
 option of being with
Pookie at this crucial time. I would certainly complain about the
 vet as
Pookie was your baby even though he only had you 5 months he
 obviously loved you
and trusted you. I hope you find justice and I'm sure Pookie knew

I guess one of my problems with animal reasearch (aside from the
obvious) has to do with the under-lying assumption that humans are
somehow superior just because we can add 2 and 2 and, therefore,
 a few
petty conveniences or a couple of years on our lives is worth the
inconvenience, torture, or even deaths of a few measly animals.
Need I point out that if we don't learn PDQ how to live in harmony
withour surroundings (as animals have been literally dying to show
 us for
some time now), all the 2 + 2s in the world aren't going to save our
collective butts! Perhaps if we were held responsible for every
singlepiece of trash that left our homes instead of forgetting all
 about it
once it left our curbs, we'd think twice about our indulgent,
 disposablelifestyles...but I digress... :)

Bottom line, we wouldn't even be having this discussion if the
subjectsin question were orphaned *children* being sold to research
facilities. But these are just animals, right? Animals that are
 going to die
anyway, right? When one needs to rationalize the action, that
 should be
a huge red-flag that perhaps the action just isn't right...many German
citizens turned their backs on their own Jewish neighbors because,
hey,What can I do about it? Thank God for the few who stood up
 and said,
This isn't right. But, then again, we're talking about *people*
right? Animals, living, breathing beings, forfeit their right to
 be the
masters of their own destiny because they can't add 2 and 2. A
so-called necessary evil is still, by definition, evil.

The fact of the matter is they will get animals some where any
way... Now, most of them come from back yard breeders that breed
 animals for just that market
Perhaps if more shelters sold to research the animals that they
 are
  going to PTS
that would put some of the back yard breeders out of business

If the business arraignment is to sell animals that have a chance
  for
  adoption
than I too have a problem with that but if these are animals
 among
  the 6
  million
per year that are out of time and going to be PTS and the money
 is
  spent
  at the
shelter so that they can do more good work than what is wrong
 with
  that ???

And again, most research is done so the manufactures can back up
their claim the their product is the best...NOT that their product
 causes
  the most
suffering... They want the results to be a happy ending...
Not all tests are successful but for the most part they aren't
  going to
  waste
their time and money on a test that they aren't pretty sure will
  work...
Even if its testing for a cure for a disease and they infect they

 Hi Everyone,
My sister's (Connie), inside-only tuxedo cat went missing sometime
 last
night. His name is Tux and he's short haired, and about 2yrs, with
 the
sweetest little kitten face. They think he may have snuck out when
 a
visitor left the screen door ajar, (the visitor left around 9pm).
 They
didn't miss him until this morning because my nephew thought he was
sleeping with my sister and my sister thought he was with my
 nephew.
They are sick with worry. Not only has he never been outside
 before,
but he's very skittish and they live in coyote territory. Being
 out at
night is a death sentence for any small pets in their neighborhood.
 To
make matters worse, he has short little legs and he can't even jump
 on a
counter, let alone scale a wall. I've set a trap in her front yard
 and
they've confined their other cat to the bedroom so they can leave
 the
front door open. She's already put up fliers and tomorrow we'll be
canvassing the neighborhood door to door with his picture and info.

Please, please, please take a moment to send out positive thoughts
 to
help him find his way home safely. This is doubly hard on Connie
because her 17 year old dog just crossed about a month ago.

I called several professional ACs today, but no one has called me
 back
yet. If anyone on the AC group can help contact him we'd be so
appreciative. I can only imagine how scared he is and how
 disoriented.
I've posted a couple of pictures under Come home Tux, (I hope I
 did it
 right!).
 Thank you so much,
 Nina

wash room jumped on my hot water heater and stayed there for 3
 days. I loved her
from the first minute I saw her. I knew she was special and meant
 just for
me. No sharing this one with my hubby. My other kitties were
 jealous but soon
learned she was here to stay.
Rudy was what I called my bold protector. She was not afraid of
 any cat or
dog. If she heard me scolding another cat she would run in and slap
 the
kitty. My 3 large dogs were also afraid of her. If one would come
 running at me to
fast she would jump in front of me to protect me and quickly turn
 them around.
She could be in another room and if I stubbed my toe and cried out
 she would
come flying in to see if someone was messing with her Mama.
She was diagnosed with felv when she was spayed. I guess she was
 less than
one year old. She was always healthy except she lost all her teeth
 but one
early on so her tongue was always falling out her mouth. She was
 hard to please
with food would only eat fancy feast and not much of that. Would
 beg for milk
and throw it right up if I gave in and gave it to her.
I still have know good answers as to why kidney failure. The
 Vet says it
happens in older cats. She was not anemic, but she was running a
 low temp. I
saw know signs of sickness till Sunday morning when she started to
 stumble when
 she stood up.
Sorry to go on so long but I needed to say how much I'll miss her
 sleeping
in my arms, loving me completely and unselfishly. Sheila

I think hyperthyroidism is very common in older cats. They go on
tapazolejust like humans and biggest problem is the once or twice a

 were no
restrictions on diet or anything. She had lost some weight and was

 Hi guys,

I took Julie to the vet this past Friday because she
was having pain going to the bathroom the Sunday
before and had a little blood around her genitals. I
couldn't get her to the vet until Friday so I gave her
Baytril I had left over from Cricket starting on
Sunday, which wiped out whatever bacterial infection
she might have had, and all her renal functions seemed
to be back to normal by Friday. But I took her in
anyway just to be sure, and they ran a urinalysis and
total blood/labwork on her. Saturday the vet called
me and said her results showed hypertension (she got a
17 on her T4 results, normal is between .4 and 5.2)
and he prescribed 10 mg of Tapazole/Methimazole daily.
I have to bring her in in two weeks for further blood
work to see how the drugs are helping her thyroid.
Does anyone here have any experience with
hyperthyroidism in their kitty, and what did you do
about it? What does T4 measure? Did your kitty pass
away from the hyperthyroidism? Did the drugs reverse
the heart murmur? What diet would be good for a kitty
with hyperthyroidism? Any advice is greatly
 appreciated!

I have been thinking a lot about Fu, and I read the info on the
 site,
emailed by someone else, saying that Tapazol can cause anemia and
 kidney damage. I
am thinking there is a good chance that this is what has happened
 to Fu. I
am wondering if it would make sense to decrease or stop the
 Tapazol, since the
info said that such side effects stop after the drug is stopped.
 Our cat
Percy was hyperthyroid for several years before she died at a month
 short of 20,
and did not get any treatment for it because she also had slight
 kidney
problems and the vet said the two would keep each other in check.
 She was
horribly thin and ate a tremendous amount for her size, but lived
 quite happily like
that for most of her elderly years. We finally started her on
 Tapazol when
she was so think we could not believe she could live that way, and
 she died
two days after starting it, and we always wondered if the meds did
 it.
Anyway, what I am trying to say, is that the effects of
 hyperthyroidism may be less
fatal, or fatal in a slower way, than the anemia if that is coming
 from the
Tapazol, so it might be worth trying him off it.

spent some time showing me how to go about it.
My question is...is it possible for there to be an immediate bad
reaction? If so, I'll wait until morning when I can rush him to the vet.
The pharmacist said I could call her tonight for another half hour
(until 10pm CST) or she'll be available all weekend. I'm a little
fearful and am thinking I might wait for tomorrow morning, but my little
old fellow is so weak.
So now I'll go walk Jasmine, our Katrina orphan and check for replies

Michelle,
Thanks for the info. I was basically wondering if a transfusion would
help Fu. The vet is leaning toward thinking that his cancer, although in
remission could be causing the anemia. Fu did start to come out of
remission earlier last year, but we doubled the dose of pred and that
put him into remission. The vet referred to this as anemia caused by
chronic disease.

If you are wondering about cost for a blood transfusion (I answered

In my experience vets would not transfuse until the hematocrit was
 down to
 13. But a transfusion could help. Epogen normally takes a few
 weeks to kick
in, I think, so you might need to do a transfusion to keep him

The anemia may be a result of the methimazole. (Check out

How long has Fu been on the methimazole?

I do not understand why pred would make anemia worse-- they often
 give
steroids to make anemia better. The only thing I can think of with
 anemia that
steroids would make worse is if it is caused by a bacteria like
 hemobartanella.
I would guess, with Fu's kidney failure, that the anemia is more
 likely
related to him not producing enough of the kidney hormone that
 tells the bone
marrow to produce red blood cells, and that is exactly what Epogen
 is for.
Reactions to Epogen tend to happen after months, I think. I would
 get a second
opinion on trying Epogen, from someone like an internist.

The other possibility is that the intestinal cancer has moved into
 the bone
marrow. But that would probably call for more, rather than less,
 steroids.
I would take Fu to an internist, I think.

What is his rbc or hematocrit?

Tonya,I feel exactly the same way. Ever since seeing Larry King my
 depression
has been overwhelming. Maybe I have been wearing blinders but I
 knew
absolutely nothing about this situation and I wish I still knew
 nothing about it. I
know that makes me a coward but I can't help it. I can't even watch
 the animal
shows where the lions run the poor helpless prey down and kill them
 for food. I
can't get the look of fear on the poor babies faces out of my mind.
 The
cruelty in this world is unbelievable. I still can't sleep for the
 depression. If I
could wake up and it would be spring, maybe that would help. All I
 can do now
is write letters, sign petitions and try to get my friends to do
 the same.

Honorable Officials of China:

I urge you to make enforceable animal protection laws a priority before the
2008 Olympics in Beijing. Please do not let China's notoriously inhumane
bear bile farms and live animal markets tarnish your image during the Games.
In particular, I implore you to immediately enact laws to ban China's
dog/cat fur trade.

Like many potential tourists, I cannot support a country that condones
animal abuse. Neither revenue nor tradition justifies the profoundly cruel
Chinese dog and cat fur trade.

UNACCEPTABLE: Up to 8,000 caged dogs and cats are stacked into a single
truck for cross-country transport without food or water. At an animal market
in Southern China, investigators documented 20 cats smashed inside one wire
cage and dead cats draped over cages. I've seen the video footage with my
own eyes: Live dogs and cats flattened inside cages the size of filing
drawers are tossed from truck beds on to hard pavement. Animals scream as
their paws are crushed. Workers pull them out with long metal tongs and
fling them over a 7 ft. fence. Some of these cats and dogs still wear
collars and ID tags, indicating they are stolen companion animals.

UNCONSCIONABLE: Chinese fur markets violently bludgeon, hang, electrocute
and strangle fur-bearing animals, including millions of cats and dogs. Cats
are choked in their cages alongside live cats. Dogs are hung from wire
nooses and slashed across the groin. At fur farms in Hebei Province,
investigators videotaped workers carving off skin and fur from alert dogs,
foxes and other animals. Some fully skinned animals continued to blink and
breathe spasmodically as their hearts beat for another five to 10 minutes.

DECEITFUL: Dog/cat items are deceptively labeled Gae-wolf, Sobaki, Asian
Jackal, Wildcat, Goyangi, Katzenfelle, or other names before exported
abroad. Unsuspecting shoppers purchase unmarked, dyed or vaguely labeled
boots, coats, linings, toys and homeopathic remedies.

I will not visit a country that brutalizes animals to decorate a sweater,
line a coat or become a trinket. This is the ultimate betrayal of creatures
who are instinctively trustworthy and devoted companions to people.

I stand firm in my boycott of Chinese tourism, commerce and the 2008 Olympic
Games--unless China makes visible strides to end the vicious treatment of
dogs, cats, bears and other non-human beings. Thank you for accepting my
comments on this matter of international concern.

Sincerely,

Dam this disease... We rushed my beautiful little dilute calico
from AW to the vet early this morning...I found her lying on the
floor this morning, cold and almost lifeless and did a terrible
sick sounding cry when I picked her up...I wrapped her in a jacket
and got her warmed up and she came back to life a bit
She apparently had diarrhea in the night and was very dehydrated...
The vet gave her sub Q and will draw blood for testing if she
gets any stronger...She seemed herself yesterday morning...
She was the alfa cat in the room and was always with me when
I was there and always the 1st to come for food ...
Last night she slept in the cat tube instead of right beside or on me
and didn't come for the last snack of the day as usual but I free feed
dry food and didn't think that much of it until this morning when she
wasn't climbing on me to wake up
She recovered from being such a mess at AW to such a good
kitty and I never thought this was going to happen so soon but
now all I can do is hope she will bounce back...

She was so strong and well just yesterday morning that part of me
wanted to believe that she would bounce back but when I found her
this morning on the floor and she did a terrible cry when I picked her
up I knew that something was terrible wrong with her...

The blood test showed kidney function had stopped and the vet
said that she had so little blood in her vains that he suspected
internal bleeding probably in the liver...

When I brought her to the vet this morning she could barely hold
her head up for a short time and after being at the vets all day and
having sub Q liquid all day which is probably what kept her alive
she was even weeker...The vet felt she was probably in pain and
didn't think anything would bring her back so we sent her on ahead
 to the Rainbow Bridge

Callie was a feisty little calico...She was reported at AW to be hard
to medicate and when she arrived here we learned that she would
only let you touch her for a few seconds and then you better let
 her go...
We learned where the limits were and soon she began to trust us and
Marie did better with some of the other AW cats than I but Callie
definitely chose meNow that I think of it she was never close to
any of the other cats but she was always with me whenever I was
around...She new when I was putting on clothes to go outside and
 meow and meow
and she would be waiting at the door for me when I came back in...
A few time that she did sneak out with me she let me catch her and if
I would tell her NO as I when out she would sit there and wait

Right now she would be sleeping on top of the monitor while I am
on the computerShe was such a good friend to me and she had
so much personality...She had some hard times during her life but
she was happy and loved here at the end...I only wish she could
have stayed longerI can't believe she is gone so soon
I will miss her for a long time...

That leaves 4 of the original 6 from AWOJ has never been a
totally healthy kitty...He has had to stay on antibiotics for several
bacterial types of infections and he has never played and raced around
the way some of the others do but he has always been a big purr and
snuggle bunAnd antibiotics is easy to keep them going...Both
 OJ and
Fred who is my first FeLV+ kitty who gums seem to get infected when
I take him off antibiotics...He only has a few teeth left now...I
 have had
Fred well over 2 years...I have had several worries over Fred and OJ
and they are both special buddies so I can't complain ... They are
still hereI guess this is just the way it was meant to be

 Hi People,

I've been astonished and thoroughy warmed by observing your
interactions since I joined the site today. You people are
wonderful. I have several questions, and only one suggestion.

But first, Tad, I'm so terribly sorry. Words can't help much at a
time like this. We all wish we could help. Grief is largely an
individual form of suffering that no one can alleviate adequately.
We've been through it, too often, and we feel your pain. A dear
friend of mine, the staff manager at the large veterinary clinic we
use, is undergoing the final 24 hours of her leukemic six-month-old
kitten's life. She is completely crushed, and I'm worried about
her. We have her kitten's brother. He's been seriously ill since
we took him in two months ago. He's holding his own, but barely.
Three of our positives have died this year, euthanasia, despite all
 efforts to save them.

My one suggestion to everyone forcefeeding cats is that you give
the cats Hi-Vite drops. They're made by Evsco Pharmaceuticals, and
are only available through vets. I have a twenty-four-plus-year-
old cat (relinquished to me last year) who eats only babyfood and
steak, and these vitamin drops have helped to keep him alive and
 healthy.
This cat is on a half-tab of Prednisone per day to stimulate his
appetite. I am keenly interested in your many suggestions for
appetite stimulants, particularly non-steroidal forms for our
positives. (Shadow is negative.) You've mentioned Megase,
Periactin, and Amitryptilline (which has been explained).

 What is FelK?

I'll buy us some Diarsanyl for diarrhea, slippery elm, Tropi Clean
 shampooes, and Benebac.

 Thanks,
 Presto

looked about half chewed but the pup seems fine so far. Are these things
toxic?

I know what you mean. We have a kitty that isn't
doing so great at the box, and will probably have to
replace the carpet eventually, but like you, NO WAY IN
HELL, excuse my French, that I would pts. No way.
There are always other options. That's just cruelty,
laziness, self-centeredness, or whatever you want to
call it. If you aren't going to stick it out with the
animal until it's natural end, then don't get it in
the first place! An animal is not some ornament to
decorate your home or to entertain children. Animals
come with responsibilities. Sorry about the rant...

nervous about using the more dominant kitties' boxes
(I do have multiple boxes.). Now, I will eventually
get ceramic tile flooring. In the mean time, I will

  sleep
this past spring because it was urinating in their
  new
home in the dining room. I was SICK when I found
  out.
If I had known beforehand, I would have taken her
myself. My husband just told me that they had to put
their cat to sleep, which meant to me that she was
very ill. But the next time I went over there, I
asked what was wrong with Angel, and adorable kitty
(she looked like a Ragamuffin), so sweet and
  loveable,
and they told me she was urinating in the dining
  room.
So I said, So you just killed her?! I was so
angry. Then they have the nerve to get another
  kitten
for their little girl, I guess a more well-behaved
cat, and then decide they didn't want it either, and
when they were talking about it, I just asked them
  to
not talk about it anymore because I didn't want to
know what they did with that kitten. We had
Thanksgiving dinner there this past week, and I
  really
just have to pretend none of that ever happened or I
would not be very pleasant to be around. I catch
myself wishing bad things on them when I think about
Angel, like 1000 cats converging on their home at
night while they are sleeping and peeing and pooing
EVERYWHERE, so that they house is NEVER the same, or
even worse things. And then I chastise myself for
wishing ill on others. Life is so not fair. I think
that should be SO illegal. But we allow abortion in
the U.S., and since animals are lower on the totem
pole than humans in society, I guess there's not
  much
  chance of it becoming illegal.

My son taught me a trick - after inserting the pill, put your finger
gently into the side of the kitty's mouth. That seems to stimulate a
swallowing response. If the kitty's pink tongue then comes out, you can
be pretty sure he or she has swallowed the pill.

I also unknowingly adopted a positive kitten, but he had tested a false
negative. My five other kitties were unvaccinated; three caught the
virus and died within two years as did the kitten. A third kitty tested
positive after that debacle, but threw off the virus.

I certainly wouldn't mix positives and negatives as the vaccine is only
said to be 85 per cent effective.

 Subject: Postive and Negative Cats?

 Hey everyone-

I was wondering...my other cat hasn't been tested yet, but will be
tomorrow. However, whether he is positive or negative, we have a
 problem. He either
has to live with a positive cat or, when my FeLV+ kitty crosses teh
bridge,or if he's positive and can't go into remission (he shows no
 symptoms of
anything, he's a very healthy cat overall, except for the usual
occassionalkitty eye goobers and hairballs), he'll need a
 companion, since he does NOT
do well alone. I've been looking for someone with FeLV+ cats for
 adoption in
my area (Chicago), with no avail. That, and the cats I take in tend
 to be
needy, homeless strays that choose me (who are then taken
 immediately to the
vet to be tested, have inital rabies and FVRCP vacs and an exam
 before they
ever meet the other resident cat, since I can only have 2 at a
 time). And
anyway, if he's a neg, I have no plans to cast off my kitten just
 becauseshe has this diagnosis.

So how do you guys do it? Everything I've ever read says remove all
positive cats from the household or elect euthanasia if you have a
multi-cat household as if it were that easy.

I'm aware that some of you keep both positives and negatives
 together...so I
have some questions and I would really love it if you guys would
 share some
 of your experiences with me:
-How do you do it? Are they separated in any way within your home?
-How do you control the virus in terms of cleaning and separation
 of LB's
 and dishes?
-CAN the virus be contained? What other precautions do you take?
-Does this mean I have to stop bringing treated/vaccinated rescued
 negs into
my house as long as I have a positive cat, should Leo test positive?
-In your experience, how quickly and readily does the virus spread?
Everything I've read basically says that if you have one positive,
 you can
count on having more if you're in a multi-cat household.
-In a household with both negs and positive cats, do you vaccinate
 the negs?
 Why or why not?

I've already gotten some input from Belinda (thank you!) but I just
 kind of
want to take a survey to see the various outcomes and know all of my
options. If anyone can spare some good vibes that Leo is negative
 and Lola's
symtoms remain under control at least until we can seek further
 treatmentoptions, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks guy! You are a terrific group!

OT: Katrina animals need help

2005-11-15 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH

PLEASE POST AND CROSS POST. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.

We at Awareness Day, would ask that each group who has any room please
say yes to at least one dog or cat from Katrina. We and Companion
Animal Placement will do the rest.

One of our volunteers, Leslie Picone just got back from her second trip
to New Orleans. She was instrumental in helping develop a successful
trapping schedule and now dogs and cats are being trapped at a dramatic
rate.

Problem. There is no one coming forward to rescue these animals and
because of lack of space these animals are going to have to be euthanized.

We understand that everyone is overwhelmed but if you can find a place
for just one Katrina cat or dog, it would make all the difference in the
world to that animal

Please contact us if you are a reputable rescue group who will be able
to handle this animal and do right by it. We do not want to have any
group over extend themselves.

Free transportation will be arranged by Companion Animal Placement. We
are told there are about 30 super friendly cats who are just sitting in
holding areas and waiting. The traps are being set in areas where there
have been no rescue previously, and the animals are very adoptable.

 Wendy,
Is it possible to have the vet come to your house? That alone
 would
 make it much less stressful.

Also just curious, how long has Cricket been on baby food, this is
 not a
substitute for cat food, it doesn't have the vitimin requirements
 a cat
needs? Also how much food are you actually getting into Cricket,
 a
teaspoon here and there is not enough and Cricket will die from
 lack of
food if that is the case. When syringe feeding a cat that isn't
 eating
you have to get atleast 180 to 200 ccs of food into them daily if
 you
don't they are at risk of developing Fatty Liver Disease and this
 will
 kill them.

If Cricket isn't getting very much food it will make weaker and
 sicker,
the weaker and sicker he gets, the less he will want to eat, it is
 a
vicous cycle and food is the ONLY way to stop it.

I've been going throught the archives and it looks like Cricket
 has been
getting small amounts of baby food for quite a while, this will
 not
sustain him, he needs real food in real amounts, it is a bit of
 work to
syringe that much food but it could save his life if it isn't too
 late.
There is a Assisted Feeding group that can help and support you in
 this,
 you can find them here:

No cat can recover from anything if they are not getting enough food.

2005-11-01 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
Kerry,

There are different kinds of fluid bags, I know because I go to two
different vets and get fluids from both (one is the vet school because
I see a specialist there).
I suggest calling your vet's office and talk to a tech. On Fu's bag,
which I can see from here, there is a sort of rubber stopper at the
bottom through which I inject air; other bags have a little spout like
projections covered with rubber through which you can put a needle.
Your vet techs can also tell you how to deal with fluids bags where
the sides stick together and make it difficult to see how much you've
given. I've been doing fluids for several cats for years - sometime if
I can't see the fluid line, I'll just judge by how fast the fluid is
going in and then I'll decide whether to do two or three minutes. I
try this before I inject air into the bag.
As for the old Ringer bags you mentioned in your other post,
remember to check the expiration date. And after a bag has been
opened, you only want to use it for no more than 10-14 days.

Best wishes to you and Pookie,
Bonnie

This is what the vet techs who work for my vet do. They get a

As a nurse on the CRF list objected to this, thinking of

Re: Chinese cat and dog fur

2005-10-30 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
ABC News, I think it was 20/20, also had a segment on the Chinese dog
and cat fur trade and a video! There was a German Shepherd, tail
happily wagging, being led off to his terrible fate and then it was
filmed.

Let's face it, all fur is cruel! Whether an wild animal is caught in a
trap, has it's neck broken or suffers anal electrocution on a
fur farm - where it's life has been spent in a tiny cage - the fur
trade is cruelty incarnate. Nobody has to wear fur anymore except
perhaps some Inuit who live in Arctic regions.

Check out a great video called The Witness made by a group called
Tribe of Heart. It's about an average blue collar worker from, I
think, the Bronx, who discovers the inner workings of the fur trade.
In the final scene, he had rigged up a video camera on his van and
drives around Manhattan showing scenes of animals struggling in traps,
being killed for fur, to holiday shoppers. Many onlookers look
stunned, avert their eyes, and some cry.

Yes unfortunately very true. It is much cheaper to import cat and
 dog fur
from china than fake fur. Last year I voiced my disgust at a
 couple of shops
here in the uk for passing furry ball scarfs off as fake - they
 were not
labelled and smelled like animal and you could see the animal skin
 it was so poorly
made. I ended up repoting the shops to peta and getting fur trade
 info sent
out to them. The chinese fur trade is cruel beyond belief. Peta
 recently got
some undercover video footage which I daren't watch because I'll
 be too
traumatised. They do skin alive as they believe the adrenylin
 pumping provides for
a better quality pelt. They steal people's pets too for the fur -
 the whole
thing is sick. I know peta are often seen as extreme but on this
 one they
appear to be spot on sadly.

The Phillippines is also a source of cat fur. The ABC video showed a
fur operation there. In a cage that had been full of cats, the last
two terrified-looking cats were clinging to one another as workers
took them out one by one and strangled them in front of the other
cats. These cats knew what their fate was. The film was shown over a
year ago but it's all coming back now. I wrote a letter to the
Phillippine embassy; someone there wrote back denying it was happening
and indignantly demanded to know the address of the factory. The video
had only said this was happening in the Phillippines but I hope they
got plenty of other letters.

I think the Burlington Coat factory was one chain mentioned that was
selling dog and cat fur trimmed coats. A lot of the coat labels had
names of made-up animals like Russian ard-wolf.

Many people don't want to hear about the horrible things animals go
through; they think nothing can be done but we have to keep bringing
it up - it only takes a few dedicated people to start changes in the
way we think and do things...it always has, as someone once said.

Isn't it odd how people talk about someone behaving like an
 animal when
they behave in a particulary nasty way.
No animal is capable of the horrors perpetrated by humans.
I would like to see a huge campaign mounted to encourage a boycott of
Chinese goods until they shape up. Since half the stuff we buy
 these days
seems to come from China it would have to give them pause.
On the other hand there probably isn't a single country in the

I like to think that one day people will look back at the way we

 how we could
possibly have thought it was ok to use, abuse, eat and wear them.

Lohna,
I would never use a chemical - even on healthy kitties. I use a flea
comb - it takes a few days but it works. Just comb out the kitty and
everytime you get a flea in the comb, dip it in hot soapy water. I did
this in the bathroom with the door shut but gave the kitty lots of
affection at the same time.

This worked well when I added a new kitty, with fleas. I checked my

So please, if you have a source for a location, please respond ASAP.

As for help, they are still in need of people to come to New Orleans to

feed, but
they also need those who can do shelter work, administration work,
check in
animals, drive them to shelters, etc, etc. Lamar Dixon is still
housing the

They meet again at 5:30 am to get going and to be briefed on the days

My dear little Claudette

2005-09-16 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
Dear Belinda,

Please add my dear little Claudette to the Candlelight service. She
passed today at the age of twelve. She had cancer of the liver and
died from a reaction to the chemo which was just started yesterday.

Claudette had thrown off the leukemia virus eight years ago when my
kitties were exposed to the virus from a kitten who had originally
tested negative. Her brother Phillipe became positive and died within
two years. Claudette and Phillipe were two beautiful grey and black
tabbies with white feet and copper markings. She and Phillipe had
prominent black rings on their grey tails, just like a raccoon. Her
cute little nose was half white, half copper, and she had the loud
insistant meow of her Siamese mother, Mitou.

Claudette, Phillipe, Andre, and Sylvie were all born in my son's
closet. When they were tiny, Phillipe, the leader of the pack would
climb up my leg into my lap with Claudette right behind. Then would
come black Andre. I would have to pick up the very small Sylvie who
was born with hypernatremia and wasn't well coordinated. Then all of
the kittens would snuggle in my lap and fall asleep - it was a thrill,
even though their clawing their way up was a tad painful. Claudie was
also the best of all my kitties with the head butts. She was like a
caring older sister to the sick kitties and would always hover close
by them as if to offer comfort. The sudden onset of the cancer and her
loss this morning was a big shock. But now I hope she has found her

I would definitely try a little syringe feeding. A/D food for ill
animals easily mixes with water. It may perk up his appetite. Cats who
go too long without eating will get Hepatic Lipidosis.

 Any ideas please

Bramble has Calici again after catching it from Buddy as I
mentioned last week - his nose is ulcerated and I'm sure his
throat is too as he is really hungry and wants his food but can't
seem to eat much of it. I've tried mashing it for him but I think
his throat is too sore. This has been for 2 days now. His vet had
said wait for 5 days on antibiotics last week but the day after I
got him on Interferon Omega when he sneezed blood. He has just
finished his first 5 injections. He has been more affect the last
2 days so I'm pleased I got him on Interferon again fast.

Any ideas for feeding (I've left him some baby food out this
morning without much success and tried fish for the smell)
I really think it is his throat that is sore - he goes back to the
 vet tonight.

Re: ot-Take Action Now to Support the Pet Animal Welfare Statute-take off list?

2005-07-28 Thread BONNIE J KALMBACH
I would go with the animal welfare groups over the breeders, although I
know some of the latter, e.g. PETA, have done questionable things etc.
But many breeders' organizations like the American Kennel club do give
(for a fee?) papers to puppies raised in puppy mill like places, so the
breeders have a much clearer financial stake in this issue. My guess is
that with commercial cat breeders the situation may be similar.

that's my two cents,

Statute-take off list?

This is not directly related to felv, but a lot of us work in
rescue and rescue a lot of leukemia positive cats. My positive is
a rescue. I don't know whether it should be taken offlist or not.

I have read about the bill and done a little research, though I'm
no authority. All I know is that the Cat Fancier's Association
and the AKC (and now a 'purebred' cat rescue) are all posting
that we should push for a NO to this bill.

Every animal welfare group I know of is saying we push for YES.
This has been discussed on my local animal welfare and animal
rights' lists. All animal groups I belong to here in Georgia say
that the purebred groups are trying to 'scare' rescues into
thinking this will hurt them, and that in fact, it will NOT hurt
rescue groups, but help them by preventing the influx of animals
from breeders. Rescue groups do not 'sell' animals for a profit.
I have more info. for those interested, but from what I've read I
am reassured that this will NOT negatively impact those in rescue.

We've had a long going discussion on the Georgia Animal Welfare
list with a breeder/rescuer trying to get people to oppose, All
rescuers have assured people that she is wrong. Breeders just do
not want to be regulated. All of my local rescue groups, humane
societies, etc... are supporting this legislation (except for
those that deal only with purebreds or are breeders themselves
 involved in rescue).

How many felv + siamese, himalayans, etc... are in the homes of
people on this list who were not 'bought' from a breeder, but
RESCUED BECAUSE of a breeder's irresponsibility?

I have google searched this legislation, and groups against it are
breeder or pet dealer type groups and every group in favor of this
legislation is an animal welfare group working to help animals
such as HSUS, Doris Day Animal League, Friends of Animals, etc...

The senators working on this bill are doing it to STOP the deaths
of animals in shelters due to overpopulation and STOP horrible
puppymill practices. I believe they are working directly with
DDAL. DDAL has a strong focus on spay/neuter and stopping
 puppy/kitten mills.

I'm not an attorney, but I 'believe' the animal welfare groups
over the breeders' groups, and I know the purpose of this bill is
to help companion animal overpopulation, not to stop rescue work.
If nothing else, think how many LESS animals there will be to
rescue if we can stop backyard breeders and puppy and kitten
mills... I think it's unprecedented and a step in a positive
direction to have people in Congress willing to even work on this.

Breeders are a well organized group as well. They jumped on this
legislation and started urging people to vote NO on their
petitions in full force before most of us (on Georgia rescue lists
anyway) even knew what was going on They are also
appealing to individual citizens saying they are going to lose
their 'constitutional right' to do whatever they want with their
 'property'.
 That's my 3 cents.

Jennifer,

My kitty Fu gets a 10 mg.'s of pred a day and 200 ml of fluids. His

I have not written anything for a while. I have been very overwhelmed with Sebastian's problems and I keep trying things that do not seem to work. I recently took Sebastian to Virginia Tech's Veterinary hospital (because of everyone's recommedations). I am so upset that he is getting sicker. I feel that I am overlooking his problems because I do not want to face them. I love him so much and I can not stand to see him this way. I took him to the veterinary hospital because he has almost lost all control of his hind legs. They are becoming so weak and he has used the bathroom on himself a few times because it is hard for him to get in and out of the litter box. The vets are worried that his problems are nuerological, so I set up another appointment with the nuerology department. He also twitches and has like muscle spasms or something
when he is sleeping. It is like his body can not rest. The vets told me that they would like to do a spinal tap and a special X-ray where they shoot dye into his spine. All of this has to be done under Anaestheia. There are alot of risks with these tests. Putting a FELV+ kitty under involvees alot of risks and they said that if something goes wrong with the spinal tap he could be paralyzed. I do not know what to do. What what you do? I need help making this decision.

Currently, Sebastian is taking methylcobalamin and AHCC-vitamins. I also started him on Interferon. It is just the Interferon that the vet gave me. Should I get some other type of Interferon? WHat is everyone else using? Should I give him more supplements and vitamins everyday? I will do anything for him. I just do not know what all I should/can do right now. I need alot of help.

Also ask if they have a fund to help pay when people can not
 afford to pay
the bills. Most animal hospitals say they have these funds and get
 people to
donate to them, but then do not advertise that money is available.
 Ask them if

I've also done fluids today; he had 100ml last night and vet said to

thinking that it might be too soon to give more as the last dose was

Oh, Bonnie, it doesn't sound good for Fu, does it. When Effie's
lymphoma went out of remission, she was frequently in the box
trying to poop, nothing came out as she wasn't eating to produce
any waste. Doc found more tumors against her spine and insides

If his lymphoma is out of remission, I would suggest talking to
 the vet about
putting him on dexamethasone and depomedrol shots instead of
 prednisone
pills. They are stronger and also reduce the need for pilling.
 They shrink
lymphoma. I don't know if you were on the list and following when
 my Simon was sick. A
month before he actually died from anemia, it seemed like he was
 dying from
his lymphoma and the vet would not give him more chemo and sent
 him home to
die, which we thought he would. We loaded him up on steroids (a
 depo and a dex
shot one day, then dex for two more days) and he got better enough
 to get chemo
and do well for another month.

I would highly suggest keeping him on slippery elm. You can
 syringe it to him
by mixing it with water, preferably hot water, until it is a goopy
 texture,
cooling it, and syringing it a few times a day. It really does
 wonders with
intestinal lymphoma. My Josephine had intestinal lymphoma, and the
 vets were
amazed that she never had diarrhea or other bowel problems the
 whole time. I
syringed her 3 cc's of slippery elm syrup (which I made by boiling
 the powder for a
second or two with water, stirring and cooling) twice a day.

I understand. I agree that he may need another enema. But if he
 gets one
and it works, I am saying that I think you should put him on
 Slippery Elm
afterwards to prevent this happening again, or pumpkin. I have not
 tried Pumpkin for
this, but hear it works well. I think the Slippery Elm is a
 miracle herb. It
has nutrition value as well and helps the immune system. George
 Washington
apparently fed his troops slippery elm gruel in the winter to try
 to prevent
 them from getting sick.

When I mentioned the stronger steroids, it is in case the lymphoma
 is acting
up and causing symptoms not controlled by what he is on, and/or if
 part of his
problem with passing stool is from an intestinal tumor causing a
 blockage.
Dexamethasone is amazing at quickly, though temporarily, shrinking
 lymphoma
tumors. The effects can last a while.
