  Hi Guys,Well I am sorry to report that today is
  Cricket's lastday. He has deteriorated quite a bit and is no
  longereating, drinking, taking food via force feeding, andhe is barely
  able to walk. So I realized today thatit is time. I am trying
  not to get emotional rightnow because I have to get through the day at
  work. But I do need to ask if anyone has any adviceregarding taking a
  kitty to be pts. Cricket hatesneedles and will not be happy about
  it. I knowsomeone mentioned Rescue Remedy, but I couldn't findit
  at Walmart or Petsmart. I can look at the CVSacross the street from
  my job. Other than RescueRemedy, is there anything else I can do to
  make him ascomfortable as possible before going or during
  hisvisit? Thanks.

Oh, yes, I am on two FIV lists (6 years)but
my FIV+ are on Itraconazole. Emily is negative for FIV/FeLV. Her
eyes are okay, don't care about fur loss, she does havetwo mountain range
scabs and other scabs; this am an oozy area and she whacks at it with her back
foot ... told her that was a no-no. If no improvement in another day she
will begin an abx. I am oh-so ambivalent about continuing the fulvicin ...
it seems to do no good and yet would it be worse if they were not on it ... no
one can answer that.

  How bad is her face now? Does she have open wounds, or is it
  justirritated and hairless? I speak from personal experience... losing
  hair is not that bad of a thing, my Mythic cat's allergies are so bad he is
  often half bald... on his entire body. It will grow back eventually (RW is
  temporary, unlike my poor Mythic's allergies, which are chronic). I would only
  worry a lot if it is causing her to get irritated in her eyes (like eruptions
  on the inside of the eye lids), or if it is open wounds. From what I have
  heard, some of the treatments for RW are 10 times more dangerous than the
  condition itself. On the FIV+ list a few months back there was a RW
  discussion, and it was noted that the medication you said your cats are on (I
  don't recall the name now, but I recognized it in your email) has been proven
  to kill FIV cats. FELV is not that much different from FIV in regards to
  immune system responses. You could join that group and ask them there for more

If you have a place to foster any of your kitties
temporarily, you might want to do that ASAP. When do you go to
court? Depends on how crappy the law feels that day ... I do know of a man
in the northeast a year or two ago, the law came in without warning and took
everyone of his personal and rescue kitties. By the time he had a lawyer
to try to get his kitties back, most had been euthed. Yes, horror story,
which is why it has stayed with me a long time. I was not there nor know
him personally. From what he said and having read his posts (different
list) he seemed like a genuine animal caring person. I realize this will
intensify your worry andsleeplessness, I am so sorry, but you do have to
do whatever you can to save your babies. The real wrath of it is people
like us who have over the city limit of animals but are devoted caretakers get
in trouble but people who have even only one pet, neglected and abused, do not
get caught and the animal suffers. It really makes me angry.
Prayers and hugs for you and your babies to be safe. Wish I could do
something more for you.

Yup, tried the diluted bleach ...
unsuccessful. I don't mind rw on myself, but sure wish I could get the
kitties healed. Probably not enough cleaning. Ugh!

Poor little Emily, she was clear for 21 days while
I continued to give her the oral Griseofulvin and topical lotrimin liquid where
the rw had been. Day 22 - her whole forehead broke out worse than before
and still a mess overa week later. Someslight healing and yet
this morning a new oozing patch. It took two months+ to catch this little
feral and she has lived with us13 monthsnow, very sweet and

furkidstake their meds well. RW teaches us

  Have you tried diluted bleach? It may dry out your skin in that spot, but
  it should kill the fungus. I may have it here too, Bones has lost several

  Hi Sue,Thanks for sharing the story about the good
  vet. We're bombarded with negative human stories way too often, it's
  nice to know there are plenty of good ones out there too. When we
  run across the vets or organizations that recommend immediate pts upon
  diagnosis, we should all report back to them with our successes.
  These people need to be educated, (as frustrating as that is), in order to
  save lives and heartache in the future. Years ago, before felv
  touched my life in such a personal way, I was told by a trusted rescuer
  that all Felv kitties should be pts, (so they don't suffer agonizing
  deaths). Now I know how terribly wrong that is. I wish this
  person and I hadn't lost touch so I could share our stories of love and
  hope with her.Do tell Mary that the oral interferon has been known to

  different vet yesterday because she had a terrible mouth ulcer and
  was running a temperature. The FeLV test came back positive and the
  vet was all set to kill poor Daisy. Anyway, Mary decided she couldn't
  do it as Daisy was still eating and was happy in herself, and
  so took her home. She took Daisy to our usual vet,
  Sonia, today. Mary told her what had been said, so Sonia checked her
  mouth, said she'd seen worse and that if Daisy was still eating and
  enjoyed having her tummy tickled so much she thought it was worth a

  antibiotics, more needles and more interferon, but a living cat! It
  may not work but it has to be worth trying and I so admire Sonia for
  wanting to give it a go. Makes me realize why I choose her to treat
  all my own cats when they're ill (including my FIV boy Eric who has
  an interferon injection every 3 weeks and is as fit as can

  am a cat-mom who ishappily loved by thirteen (13) adorable kitties,
  ten(10) in which are strictly indoors cats only.Currently all of my
  kids are FeLV negative.The kitties are not the only fur-kids that we
  haveadopted. Our house is a multi-animal home. Me and myhusband have
  two (2) dogs, a small ten (10) gallonfreshwater tank, a horse and
  twenty-five (25) sugargliders. (We do sugar glider rescue work as well
  asfeline rescue work.)ALL of my kids have been rescues via
  straight off ofthe street, animal control or human societies. I DONOT
  BREED. All of my fur-kids have been spayed and/orneutered (including the
  exotics) at four (4) months ofage. We live on six (6) acres of country
  land.Okay, with all of the "red-tape" out of the way. Thereason
  for this post is because this particular"topic" has come up often in the
  past and I need somehonest and straightforward advice.Me and my
  husband are expecting with our first child.I am currently six (6) months
  pregnant and sacrificingany of the fur-kids for our human child is
  completelyOUT OF THE QUESTION. We are NOT going to lose ANYmember of
  our family due to this pregnancy.However, me and my husband are
  completely aware thatthe baby will inevitably change the balance of
  ourhome's environment and/or atmosphere.Therefore, we are in need
  of ideas to help the kidsthrough a smooth and safe transition i.e. playing
  atape/CD that has baby cries on it so that the fur-kidscan become
  accustomed to the sound, allowing the kidsaccess to the baby's room so
  that they become familiarwith the baby's "smell", etc.Spraying,
  inappropriate elimination, territorialaggression, jealousy, rejection and
  avoidance arenormal responses to ANY new arrival and/or
  addition;therefore, me and my husband expect and accept thesetypes of
  behavioral outbursts.I just did not know if anyone here on the list
  hasever continued their rescue work while pregnant. Ifso, how did the
  transition workout for you? Did yourfur-kids eventually come around to
  "accepting" the newbaby or do they just call a truce?Again, this

Iodine has cured my ringworm several times (don't
know where I got it, but none of my cats had it then nor got it from me) but
this time it must be a different strain as it helped but did not cure the
RW. Lamisil can work ... again this strain it didn't budge
itmuch. I've used a variety of things on myself and it improves
without staying gone.

I sure hope you don't have the RW :( This is
not fun but I knew we'd have it eventually since I do a little rescue and have a
herd of cats. Little Ms Purrsy brought it with her and was diagnosed
early-mid August ... I was so very careful handling her, isolated her
immediately in her condo and it still moved into the big house and what a
hassle. The cats are on Griseofulvin (except the two FIV+ who take
Itraconazole) and topical Lotrimin liquid. I can't say that either
works. Some cats healed, some still broke out but very slow improvement,
some with new outbreaks after being on the oral for over three weeks.
Frustrating. Reading all the cleaning required, sorry, I don't
have time enough in my day to do all of what should be done, not even
close,and I am retired.Maybe we will have it forever.
.Maybe $500 already. And the UV light ... not all RW will
flouresce even with the doc's expensive Wood light. Some RWshows up
as fur loss, some with crud, some sores, some itch others do not. How many
times can I use the word frustrating? May I add that I do not
regret having my cats nor taking this little rescue who brought the RW even if
we never get rid of it. If no one has already given it, there is a RW
yahoo group and I'll fwd it. There is a gel suggested that is supposed to
work wonderful and I am about to order some of it.

  It's pretty long and not organized in any fashion. I
  can't vouch for any of it, but when I see a post that seems interesting I'll
  paste it into a document file. (You'll notice Karen's contribution from
  today about Blue Star ointment). I can't attach docs to send to the

  Looking up
  ringworm I found this, from what this say's it doesn't appear that it is an
  airborne contagent, although it is highly contagious (I have had it on a cat
  before and I was told to use regular athletes foot creme and for us it did
  work, I got a little spot on me and the creme cleared it up on the cat and
  myself, this was many years ago, so don't know if that is still the treatment
  for it. This cat only had one small spot so we never had a major
  problem.):

People can get Ringworm from: 1) direct skin-to-skin
contact with an infected person or pet, 2) indirect contact with an object
or surface that an infected person or pet has touched, or 3) rarely, by
contact with soil.
Ringworm can be treated with fungus-killing medicine.
To prevent Ringworm, 1) make sure all infected persons
and pets get appropriate treatment, 2) avoid contact with infected persons
and pets, 3) do not share personal items, and 4) keep common-use areas
clean.
  How do
  people get Ringworm?
  Ringworm is spread by either direct or
  indirect contact. People can get Ringworm by direct
  skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or pet.
  People can also get Ringworm indirectly by contact with objects or
  surfaces that an infected person or pet has touched, such as hats, combs,
  brushes, bed linens, stuffed animals, telephones, gym mats, and shower
  stalls. In rare cases
  Ringworm can be spread by contact with soil.

  Tree Oil:If you want a natural treatment, tea tree oil, which you can get in any health food store, is an anti-fungal and kills ringworm (I myself had a spot of ringworm last summer and used that to get rid of it and it worked). I am not sure you can put it on cats straight and so would not do so without further guidance from a vet, but I have a natural flea powder that contains it so I know they use it to some degree on cats and dogs. But you can mix it with water in a spray container and spray surfaces with it. 4. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is what I posted earlier, you may have
seen it by now. Someone also suggested Blue Star ointment and it is cheap
... maybe I'll buy that, too, andtry it on some of my furkids.
Revival animal supply catalog has two pages on RW and their suggestions, which
include selling alltheir products of course, will further depress
you. It sounds like we need the National Guard and several $1000 to ever
get rid of RW. Some of my guys have cleared even though more are breaking
out. You have a large number of kitties, too, don't you? I
understand your depression :( with this.

  I sure hope you
  don't have the RW :( This is not fun but I knew we'd have it eventually
  since I do a little rescue and have a herd of cats. Little Ms Purrsy
  brought it with her and was diagnosed early-mid August ... I was so very
  careful handling her, isolated her immediately in her condo and it still moved
  into the big house and what a hassle. The cats are on Griseofulvin
  (except the two FIV+ who take Itraconazole) and topical Lotrimin liquid.
  I can't say that either works. Some cats healed, some still broke out
  but very slow improvement, some with new outbreaks after being on the oral for
  over three weeks. Frustrating. Reading
  all the cleaning required, sorry, I don't have time enough in my day to do all
  of what should be done, not even
  close,and I am retired.Maybe we will have it forever.
  .Maybe $500 already. And the UV light ... not all RW
  will flouresce even with the doc's expensive Wood light. Some
  RWshows up as fur loss, some with crud, some sores, some itch others do
  not. How many times can I use the word frustrating? May I add
  that I do not regret having my cats nor taking this little rescue who brought
  the RW even if we never get rid of it. If no one has already given it,
  there is a RW yahoo group and I'll fwd it. There is a gel suggested that
  is supposed to work wonderful and I am about to order some of
  it.

No, the RW does not always flouresce. And it
can (did) get kind of nasty before it did show up. Doc's wood's light is
much stronger than my $15 UV light ... his didn't floresce either! Which
makes diagnosis more frustrating. Once you have a dx on one cat you can
fairly assume the other lesions, fur loss, etc., is RW.

My kitties have RW on the backs of their ears, fur
loss on the tips without lesionson the tips(yet), lesions and fur
loss on the foreheads, one lesionon the flank, fur loss spotson paws
and tail, fur loss spots on the nose ... Often the other cats
have been exposed before any dx is made and onward it goes through the
herd. Ugh! Once it had spread (and yes, I was very careful) there
was no point in isolating those to condos any longer, so let them out.
Also, hyperpigmentation of the skin where the fur loss occurs is another sign of
RW.

Sandy,

Sorry for the FeLV+ status of your kitties, it is
scary at first, and heartbreaking. They can live good lives even though
they may not be as long as we'd like. Go ahead and vaccinate your
negatives for FeLV+. If you can separate the + fm the - it is recommended
although many on the list do not keep theirs separate. My Effie lived
three years, she was diagnosed + at 3 months when I found her. She was
healthy and full of energy until she developed lymphoma at 2-1/2, did well with
chemo and then the cancer came back and she really only had one bad month.
InitiallyEffie did have a coupleshort bouts of fever
andswollen lymph nodes and most kittens have a case or two of
diarrhea.

Daily Lysine (OTC)helps keep down the viral
load, as doesinterferon (prescription).

You will learn a lot from the experiences of others
on this list - it is a lifesaver, emotionally for you and physically for your
kitties. God bless you for keeping Cotton.Whatever
his/her lifespan, it will be better with your love and care.

Also, find a different vet who is at least
willing to work with you.

  Subject: Introduction
  Hello everyone,I am new to the list and wanted to introduce
  myself and tell about why I amhere. I appreciate you taking a minute
  to read about us.My name is Sandy and until recently I've had 3 adult
  cats who I love likefuzzy children. I have a stepdaughter who moved
  home this summer for a fewweeks, and brought with her an orange kitten she
  had adopted from someoneshe didn't know. She got him to keep
  her older cat Kuma (Japanese for"Bear") compnay. After they got
  here, her cat Kuma became very ill, andwithin just a day or so of showing
  symptoms, had to be euthanized. Heexperienced multi-organ failure.
  The vet diagnosed FeLV.So we took the orange kitten Cotton to the vet
  as soon as we could, since weknew so little about him. Cotton also
  tested positive for FeLV. Mystepdaughter has neither the desire nor
  the means to care for him, so sheleft him. The vet recommended
  immediate euthanasia, and wouldn't even checkhis little orange ears for
  ear mites or intestinal parasites or suggest anymore blood work. Just FeLV
  positive = death. That was hard to swallow, butin the meantime, I
  gathered up my three established cats to be tested, andunfortunately my
  younger female has also tested positive. The other twoolder cats
  were negative.I am heartbroken and distraught. I've tried to
  read and learn as much as Ican about FeLV. I have been angry at
  myself for letting this all happen,and feel now that hindsight is always
  20-20. But please don't make me feelany worse than I do. It
  had been about 2 years since my cats had the FeLVvaccine, becuase they are
  100% indoors, and I was worried aboutovervaccinating them.Now I
  feel that I need to look ahead and address this head-on, and I amhoping
  for some sound, rational advice. My vet seemed totally negative andI
  do intend to get a second opinion and confirmatory blood tests. The
  twocats that are negative got a vaccine, even though I know it may not do
  muchgood. They also have boosters scheduled in 3 weeks.I
  fear that even though Kuma (stepduaghter's cat who died) was
  sequesteredduring his illness, everyone was exposed before we realized
  what we weredealing with. I now have a household of 4 cats, two of
  whom are FeLVnegative, and two who are positive, one of whom is
  symptomatic, as Cottonthe orange kitten now has swollen glands and
  diarrhea.Any words of wisdom would be totally appreciated.Thank
  you,Sandy C.Houston, Texas area

  Dear Friends,

  Mandy is gone. She was not doing well Tuesday night (bleeding from
  the mouth and unable to eat) and I made the decision to end her
  suffering. I called my husband and he left work right away to come
  home. We held her and stroked her and ultimately she began to
  purr. She never cared to be held; she liked to pick the spot and sit ON
  you, but she did curl up in her blanket and let us hold her. We were
  with her and holding her and talking softly to her and she had one paw curled
  over my finger when she left us.

  It's been so empty the last two nights without my little reading partner;
  she always liked to sit on the bed with her upper body across my arm and her
  paws on my shoulder while I read at night. Since she became sick, she
  wanted to be with me all the time and she'd been reading with me every night
  for weeks.

  I keep thinking back to our trip to the oncologist; only last week and it
  seems forever ago. Even though the news for Mandy was not good, we had a
  lovely day and I am so grateful for it. She and Winksnoozed the
  whole way home. They were all curled up together on their faux mink and
  listening to their special pet music. I kept turning back to look at
  them and it was so peaceful and loving. We stopped where I work to feed
  my feral colony and I took the carrier out of the car and set it on the ground
  while I fed; Mandy trotted right to the front and began to "meow" to Depot
  Charlie! She was such a little talker and he looked so puzzled!
  I'm happy they were able to "meet".

  Thank you all for being here and for your good thoughts and wishes; I'd
  be completely lost without you during this year of terrible losses. I
  have to try and concentrate on how fortunate we were to have shared her short
  life. I miss her; we had our morning routine of putting the ingredients
  in the food processor and she'd "talk" to me once the whirr of the blade
  sounded. These last two mornings have been empty, as well. You are
  the only ones who understand the huge hole in our home despite the joy of our
  other cats.

Wendy,

Prayers for you and your Cricket. I have not
used either of those drugs but many others will share their info and
experiences. You probably know that when kitties are stressed their temp
will rise so you might want to take it at home. Can you ask for a
tranquilizer for Cricket to take before he goes to the vet to reduce his stress,
or use Rescue Remedy? My kitties have not responded to Rescue Remedy but
other folks have had good luck with it. It sounds like he might need
something more potent than RR though. Just a thought. My Noah must
be given some Iso for a blood draw and mouth exam and that works good for him
because it's quick, they come right out of it. Good luck.

  some encouragement
  Hi my name is Wendy. I live in Texas. I have a
  blackcat named Cricket; he's 4 yrs., 5 mo's. old and agreat cat.
  He absolutely hates the vet, so the lasttime I took him was about two
  years ago when he gotreally sick. They told me they couldn't tell
  hisactual temperature because it was all the way to theend of the
  thermometer. It took virtually the wholestaff to give him an
  injection of antibiotics and takehis blood, after they broke two needles
  off in hisback. The vet said that he tested positive for FeLV.
  When I figured out that the vet hadn't given him anyfluids
  intraveneously for 18 hours after I had askedhim to (Cricket wasn't eating
  or drinking on his own),I took him home and with the help of antibiotics
  andsyringe-feeding and a lot of love, he made it back tolife.
  The vet told me he'd never seen a cat that sickcome back. He's been
  fine for two years. At the endof September, we had a houseful of
  family duringHurricane Rita and shortly after that, I noticed
  thatCricket wasn't quite making it when he jumped onto thecabinets to
  drink water out of the sink. He startedeating kitty litter and
  wasn't eating as much. Hebegan to walk slowly and when he came up to
  me andmeowed (he never meows), I knew something was wrong. The (new)
  vet prescribed Clavamox without seeingCricket because of his stressful
  history when visitingthe vet. After two days on the medicine, he
  seemed tobe doing better, but a couple of days later, I noticedhow
  white his mouth was and started doing someresearch. Well, as many of
  you already know becauseyou've done this drill, things are looking grim
  forCricket. We have an appointment at the vet in acouple of
  hours and it's all I can do to stay at work.I know whatever ends up
  happening is going to happen,but I can't help but keep thinking and
  worrying abouthim. I am normally pretty logical and
  level-headed,but I cried all day yesterday after reading all
  thenegative information about anemia and FeLV. I do havesome
  hope however. I am hoping the vet will knowabout Immuno-Regulin or
  even better, Virbagen Omega,which is a Feline Omega Interferon. Both

  Dear Friends,

  I had some time off from work over the last couple of weeks and it's been
  terribly bittersweet. Eduardo finally came home; thinner and 'talking' a
  mile a minute. He was VERY happy to see me (he was gone over 2 weeks)
  but spooked about going into the house. I finally did get him into the
  garage after about the 4th day of our 9 day rainfest in the northeast, and I'm
  obviously thrilled to have him home.

  Mandy is starting to go downhill; she is going in tonight for another
  depo shot. I'd been giving her Cat's Claw and Pau D'arco with some aloe
  juice in her purees. She has lost a good bit of weight and is having
  more and more trouble swallowing. She follows me everywhere and cries to
  be petted and is still working out on the scratching post.

  Wink's biopsy came back and she has cancer in the glands of her
  ear. Her balance is becoming affected and she needs a very specialized
  kind of surgery, if the cancer has not spread. She's going in tonight as
  well for evaluation.

  I am trying to get them a referral to New England Veterinary Oncologists
  this week, but I'm afraid it could be too late for Mandy.I was
  told her prognosis was very poor and the surgical options I was given just
  didn't seem that they would give her a quality life. I want Wink
  see an oncologist and let an expert determine the extent of the cancer before
  we make a decision about whether we should subject her to this surgery,
  so I want to take Mandy, too, just in case

  Last night, Mandy sat on the bed with her paws on my shoulder while I
  read, and Wink sat on my chest. My precious little girls; I can't
  believe that I will be without them. I feel broken.

  I'm trying to catch up on mail and I send hugs to everyone.

  Think a good thought for my girls.

  Love, Julie

  Subject: Update on Sophie
  Hi everyone, I tried to send
  this update yesterday but it failed, I guess because I embedded a picture in
  it so this time I will send it without the picture. There is a link to
  see her pictures on her website, if anyone is interested. Here is the
  update I sent out:Hi everyone,I wanted to post an update on
  Sophie. For those of you who are already familiar with Sophie, I would like to
  let you know right off that she is doing just great. She has not needed an
  enema in over 4 months. When she seems to be having trouble, it is not long
  before she figures out how to take care of it herself. I think she has
  regained enervation in her rear quarters. She is a happy, healthy, active,
  loving little girl. She pads around the house chirping and singing and talking
  and is interested in everything around her, it seems. She seems to love me so
  much and I do her, too. She is mixing with the other cats pretty well, too.
  For those of you who are not familiar with Sophie's story, here is a
  recap, if you are interested. Sophie was a sweet, peach and grey tortie kitten
  when the caring person who was feeding her noticed her tail looking broken.
  The vet determined that Sophie needed to have her tail amputated as it
  appeared to be "dead". While amputating her tail, the vet also destroyed
  Sophie's anus and surrounding tissue, in error. Sophie did well at
  first but soon developed scar tissue over her anal area which prevented her
  from passing stool well, or at all. The stool would become impacted against
  her scar tissue and would make her rear end bulge out with stool grotesquely.
  It was awful. Sophie quickly became obstructed to the point that I had
  to take her to the vet to have an enema under anesthesia. The vet recommended
  that I put her down because she would require frequent cleansing enemas under
  anesthesia and would be miserable between enemas when the stool would begin to
  build up all over again. I knew she would have to have so much anesthesia and
  worrying about the effect of all that on her and the cost was more than I
  could afford as they charged about $90 for each cleansing enema with
  anesthesia. I thought her quality of life would be very poor because the vet
  hammered home that idea.I asked if possibly Michigan State University
  Small Animal Clinic could do any kind of reconstructive surgery. The vet
  replied that he did not know but doubted it. He did give me a referral,
  grudgingly, and there a wonderful surgeon by the name of Bryden Stanley said
  she could create an anus for Sophie by using a tendon from her leg. She was
  also going to strengthen the rectum and do a spay, per my request.Dr.
  Stanley estimated the surgery to cost $2000. I had only $700 in credit from
  Care Credit but the rest was raised from donations from incredibly caring and
  generous people from the feline leukemia group and by Timothy Meeker of the
  Feline Veterinary Emergency Assistance Program and his group and also private
  donors. There were so many wonderful people who rooted for Sophie at every
  stage and who sent prayers and positive thoughts, too. Sophie did very
  well following surgery and for two months was doing wonderfully. She had did
  have some trouble again after two months with more bulging of stool protruding
  from her rear, just like before surgery, but that was mostly taken care of at
  home with home enemas. Gradually, these enemas were needed further and further
  apart and Dr. Stanley believes that Sophie regained enervation to her hind end
  over time, which is allowing her to manage her own stool passing now.
  I am going to try to embed a recent photo of Sophie into this email
  but if that doesn't work, I did post some new pictures on her webpage. Here is
  the address, if anyone would like to see them. I hope to get better pictures
  soon. http://annlmla.tripod.com/id1.htmlBye for now,With much
  gratitude and purrs and hugs,Anne and Sophie

  Thank you Mary Christine, and thank you to everyone that has
  been there with us throughout our journey together. Your support has
  meant the world to us. Grace is free now. She was more than
  ready to go, she was anxious to go. She knew two days ago, I knew
  yesterday. Thankfully she didn't seem to suffer too much in her last
  days, just very tired, very ready. I'm glad it was our beloved Dr.
  Ortega that helped her across. She never left my touch and I spoke
  to her the whole time. It was gentle and peaceful, Dr. Ortega was
  kind and considerate, just like we knew she would be. There was no
  trouble finding a vein in her back leg. Blessings to those who know
  what they are doing. She even purred when we entered the exam
  room. She had been pulling away from me these last couple of
  days. That may have been the hardest aspect of her passing, that
  while she was still here she was already breaking the ties that held her
  to this world. I began mourning her two days ago when I knew she
  would never again jump gaily in my lap. Never again be my "heart
  warmer". I was asking her to let me warm her heart now, let me get
  her heart chakra spinning, as she'd done for me so many times. I
  thought that was never to be again. When we sat peacefully waiting
  for the doctor and the gurney, she gave me the most wonderful gift.
  She stretched herself out on her back in my arms and luxuriated in my
  scratching her neck and her chest. I am so grateful that she chose
  to be my heart warmer one more time, that she came back to me before she
  had to finally leave her wonderful little body behind. Bruce and I
  have just buried her in one of her favorite spots, a spot that she would
  sit and watch and listen and nap for hours. It was so hard to let go
  of her perfect little body for the last time. Because, you see, it
  was perfect. I told her that all the time. That she was
  perfect, just the way she was. I wouldn't change a thing about
  knowing her and loving her. She has been an incredible joy in my
  life and she always will be.The first time we almost lost her she was
  only 5 mos old. Gracie has trusted me to decide what was best for
  her, she has been my willing partner in trying to find a way to help her
  stay. It was time to trust her, she knew what was best. We
  were partners, we were friends, she was my girl and she welcomed me as her
  mommy without fur. I thank her for her gifts to me and for the
  lessons we learned together.Much love,NinaTenHouseCats

  holding theirpaw as they consciously let go, holding them in my arms,
  against myheart, even after their spirits are long gone but they
  haven't quitebeen able to leave their bodies behind; i've begged them
  to let go andgo home, i've begged the universe to let them stay with

  it's notreally time?," i've gone to get the valium to help them relax
  only toreturn to find they'd gone on without me; i've held them in my
  armswhen that's what they seemed to want, and let them be alone
  whenthat's what they wanted--tho that is the HARDEST for me, to
  respecttheir need to transition in their own space; i've done

  me, and i tell them they are free to go whenit is time. i ask them to
  tell me if they need my help; i talk to themabout their kittenhoods,

  Subject: Sad News

  Hi Everyone,

  I have somesad news to share. First, Mandy's biopsies are
  back and she has oral squamous cell carcinoma. The entire back of her
  tongue is involved. We are consulting a surgeon, but her prognosis is
  very poor, indeed. The surgery would be horrendous (possibly removing
  part of her jaw, too), followed by radiation therapy. Even with this
  extreme treatment, the recurrance rate for this kind of cancer is very high; I
  understand sometimes within just a couple of months. Mandy is a sweet
  little girl (Tater Tot's sister) who loves to come visit on her terms, but
  does not like being handled. Medicating her and syringe-feeding are
  nearly impossible.I'm not sure at this point what we will do or
  not do.

  Paulie, (the father of Mandy and Tater) is 7 years old and is in renal
  failure.
  He is feral and although I can capture him when I have to, I would need
  to keep him in his own room to get treatment. When he had the corneal
  ulcer, it was a much different story and we had a treatment plan and a
  projected outcome. For CRF, I can't see imposing that on him just to
  keep him a bit longer. He is eating again and seems a bit more like
  himself (won't let me pet him!) so we'll just see how he does.

  Cosmo has a dislocated ankle and according to the consulting radiologist,
  it cannot be splinted. He would need surgery to have the bones fused and
  he would then have a stiff leg that he couldn't bend at the wrist. I
  have to investigate this more, because we all agree that he is starting to put
  more weight on the leg and the bones may actually be fusing in this position
  which is not much different than it would be after surgery. Again, not
  sure how we will proceed for him. Hedoes not seem to be in any
  pain; you can move his leg every which-way and he does not make a peep or try
  to pull his paw away. He just obviously favors the leg.

  I'm just overwhelmed by all this. It's breaking my heart. Having so
  many cats, I knew that a day would likely come when I had several who were ill
  all at the same time, and that has certainly happened before. I've not
  faced or dealt with so many probably being terminal, though. I suppose
  one can never fully prepare for that emotionally.

  Thanks for listening, everyone, and please keep my "kids" in your
  thoughts.

  was thought to be near 16 years old but she was picked up as a stray and we
  don't know for sure..I rescued her with a group of 4 cats all starving and
  eaten by fleas..Marie was very down and they didn't think she would survived
  the 300 mile trip home but i wanted to give her a chance...I didn't know
  they were FeLV+ until I took them to my vet and that is when I decided to
  start my FeLV+ room..I lost one of the kittens is a short time but her brother
  is still here...Marie has always acted like an old cat but got around and
  had her favorite spots in sunny windows and on the soft rug on the breeze
  way...She enjoyed both those spots yesterday...About a week ago she
  started drinking a lot of water and then throwing up...I put her on an A/D
  diet and she seemed fine for a couple days then started not eating...She
  excepted some from a suringe but not enough...Last evening she only wanted
  about 10 cc and then wanted to get in the window over my bed...I had to help
  her climb up there...She stayed there for a couple hours then came down beside
  me where she always slept and before long she had passed onI might
  have been able to do more to extend her life but she was old and she was

Hi Terri,

Since they already are FeLV+, do not give the FeLV
vaccine. The other vaccines are up to you. Some vets/people feel
they need all of their immune system to fight the FeLV and adding vaccines would
further complicate it ... other vets/people feel the opposite, that they need
the extra protection from the vaccines.
I chose to give the kitties their first vaccine and

  Tater Tot came home on Saturday. The fluid was drained and was more
  thick and yellow than earlier in the week. One more brick in the wall
  for an FIP diagnosis. I talked at length with Wendy when I picked him up
  on Saturday and while she was willing to do the exploratory, she wasn't
  awfully positive about what we'd find and felt he was rather high-risk.
  I did talk to her about a CAT scan and she agreed it could be useful to rule
  out other diseases and wouldn't carry the risks of exploratory surgery.
  She's contacting an internist today to try and set up a referral.

  He's eating and seems interested in everything around him, but his belly
  is already starting to fill again. I've been reading everything possible
  about FIP and just joined the Yahoo group.

  Please keep him in your thoughts.

  Dear Friends,

  I tried to get thru my overflowing (months!) of email and it just wasn't
  going to happen. I can see that we have suffered some terrible losses
  and my heart goes out to everyone who has lost a beloved companion; I hope
  your memories will comfort you. It also seems that we have new members;
  the reason for finding this group is always sad, but you will never find a
  group of more loving, caring friends.

  Some of you might remember that last winter my husband was diagnosed with
  multiple aneurysms; the most serious was in his abdomen and after weeks of
  tests and referrals, he was scheduled for surgery because the abdominal
  aneurysm was felt to be in danger of rupture. He had that surgery and
  came through it well. He was home for about a week and one morning we
  were up having coffee and he suddenly got this really strange look on his
  face; I asked if he needed pain medication and he said, "no; I'm blind". OK;
  bit of a heart-stopper there. He was rushed to the ER and it was finally
  determined that his left carotid artery was completely blocked and he'd
  actually had blood flow stop temporarily. He was transferred by
  ambulance back to the hospital in Hartford where he had his prior surgery (we
  live about 30 miles east) and had emergency surgery to clean out the
  artery. I repeatedly asked how this could have been missed after all the
  screening that was done pre-surgery since he is a high-risk patient (diabetic
  and known cardiac blockage). I really got no answers and I am angry to
  this day thathe could easily have died or been left permanently
  impaired. His sight did return and we feel fortunate, but once again, I
  feel my trust in the medical community erode a bit further. We
  absolutely did not intend to sue anyone; we simply wanted to be sure that
  absolutely everything that he SHOULD be screened for (how can you ask for it
  if you don't know about it?) he was screened for. He's left with some
  numbness on one side of his face that primarily bothers him when he trims his
  beard (says it feels weird), and a big scar from behind his ear to his collar
  bone; big deal, right? I told him it just makes him look tough! I was
  out of work for a bit caring for him (he's now back to work, too) and came
  back to a nightmare of project deadlines, office moves, a new boss, and a
  generally toxic workplace!

  On the kitty front, Brownie (FIV+) had both his eyes removed and he is
  like a different cat! He rubs his head all over now; it obviously hurt
  too much to do it before. I will never use the vet who initially
  screened him again.

  Tater Tot is in the hospital on an IV and being evaluated. He had a
  mild cold about 2 weeks ago and I took him in and we decided to give sub-q
  fluids and Lysinesince he does have herpes and it just seemed to be a
  particularly bad flare-up (I was given a sample of a new veterinary lysine gel
  to try and evaluate; thumbs down! It was way too think and 500mg worth
  was a really big blob that he was having no part of; so stick to the capsules
  until they reformulate, is my advice!). Since then, I've observed him
  straining to poop and passing tiny little stools and by this weekend it was
  obvious that fluid was collecting in his belly. The aspirate didn't look
  like typical FIP fluid, but it's being sent out and bloodwork and many other
  tests are being done. My heart is just breaking for him; he's only six
  years old and been sick so much of his life. They've already warned me
  that whatever is going on is not good but I just pray that it's
  treatable. Please think good thoughts for him.

  It's been a hot, muggy and miserable summer here in the Northeast and I
  am having a terrible flea outbreak; I swear that I have some mutant strain of
  super-fleas that nothing will kill! I've used Borax successfully for
  years, and at one point (in a room I have sealed off)they were jumping
  out of it! I'd left an absurd amount on the floor (like half an inch;
  thinking, "I WILL kill you") and I went in to check and vacuum it up after a
  few DAYS and they were leaping out of it biting me! I swear they were
  bigger and stronger than before I put the Borax down! I've had to use
  Frontline on everyone (Program for the ferals because I can slip it into their
  food) which I hate to do because I think it's so dangerous (it takes

  Today Bramble is worse - he is very lethargic, has swollen lymph
  nodesand refuses to eat showing no interest in food. Iforce fed
  him bits but he gets stressed by it all. He looks so depressed and I fear that
  he is starting to give up - if he is the same over weekend I think I will need
  to help him pass.I know I need to not cry and be distressed in front of
  him but I am just sobbing my heart out. The vet has given a vitamin B complex
  that sometimes helps stimulate appetite to try over the weekend but I think my
  boy is getting too tired now after his brave fight. If it was just pain
  related I may have considered temporary feeding tube but today is more
  disengaging and complete lack of motivation or interest and I don't
  think it's fair to do the feeding tube if he has truly had enough - I can't
  put him through anymore if he is saying no more.

Gloria,

While pricey, have you tested him for
allergies? It was close to $300 for each of my Daisy (-)and Butch
(FIV+). Now they have allergy shots. Daisy is allergic to many
things and changing her food has helped considerably. Both of them still
have flare-ups; theirs is skin. The IVD fm the vet was best but Daisy will
only eat Wellness chicken or turkey. Her allergies are the carbs! rice,
grains, etc., unusual for cats. Butch did not test positive for foods yet
the IVD or Wellness has helped him as well. The allergy serum isn't cheap
either, again about $300 each for a batch which lasts quite a while ... began in
early January I think and still using the same vials.

  OK - Lancelot's getting better but still not out of the
  water! Again, he is a mostly white, felv- cat (maybe 1.5 yr
  old) with allergies.I took him to a second vet I go to, 1
  hour away. She did ozone, and gave me Ovaban (sp). He
  did get better. We did 1 week of daily Ovaban, then once a
  week.He's not scratching as badly, swelling has gone down, his nose
  isn't nearly as plugged up, but he still looks somewhat inflamed and
  a little sniffly. I'm taking him back to her this week
  sometime, for more ozone. He's still red faced, a
  bit.Before that, he had Amoxi, Zeniquin, Dex, Tylosin,
  intereferon, blood test, skin biopsy, ear fungal test, other
  stuff. Have tried Transfer Factor periodically, but hard to do
  because of the picky way he eats (and having 8-9 other cats).
  Have used Interferon regularly.I just can't get this kitty

  this is expensive, I'll ask the second vet. But they say he has
  ALLERGIES. I am changing to Petguard (health food store)

  Kathy. I have three positive
  cats on the human (Alpha A) Interferon. I give 1 ml daily which is the
  newest protocol as far as I know. The research found that Interferon
  does not stay in the body long and by using 7 days on and then 7 days off, the
  effects are being negated on the 7 days off, hence the daily dose of
  Interferon. I have been using the daily dosage for three years with my
  Peri. He is at least 9-1/2 years old (I've had him for 7-1/2 years) and
  has absolutely no symptoms of FELV. I adopted two more Felv+ cats from
  the Athens, GA area, where they still use gas chambers to put to sleep at
  their shelters, last February and have them both on a daily dose. I
  would HIGHLY recommend the daily dose of 30 units which equals 1 ml
  daily. Keep it refrigerated and squirt toward the back of the throat
  slowly. It is absorbed through the mucous membranes at the back of the
  throat. I get my Interferon from Island
  Pharmacy. They are based in Wisconsin about 90 miles from me. In
  winter I pay $40.00 for 100 ml and $7 or $8 for shipping since I get it next
  day or in 2 days with cold packs. When I have my vet write for all three
  cats, then I get 300 ml for $44.00. When the pharmacy can mix more of
  the Interferon in the batch it costs less, but you have to have the
  prescription in all three names. I had to just reorder for my three and
  even though they are close to me because it has been so hot, I had to pay for
  overnight shipping which was $18 something I think. If I were you I
  would ask your vet to write a script for 100 ml at a time and give it 1 ml
  every day. Unless I read new research that suggests giving daily is not
  the protocol to use, I will continue to do so. Right now my three are
  healthy, happy and act like normal wonderful cats. Peri is at least
  9-1/2 years, Lovey is about 1-1/2 years and Merry is around 2
  years. My very best to you and Deirdre. I hope
  she has many, many wonderful years with you. :)--

 Brenda.

I want to thank everyone who responded here. It appears that human

over night cold pack shipping. So I paid $50 for 60mls of interferon.
The interferon itself only cost $28, but the shipping was $22.

After 4 days on it, her lymph nodes under her chin have gotten much
smaller. They've been enlarged since a month ago when she had a cold.
I was amazed that there was an improvement so quickly.

My vet and I are unsure whether to do the "7 days on 7 days off"
routine with the interferon or just give her 1 ml a day forever. What
are you folks doing? What do you think works best? And is everyone
giving 1ml/daily?

  now he may die because I didn't get him to a doctor sooner. I haven't had the

  Wait, you said you will take in EVERY FELV+ cat
  that is offered to you, sight unseen? How many do you have now? I know of
  about 200 or so in need of homes at any given time. I can call all of the
  shelters and tell them to stop euthanising FELV+ cats, and instead give them
  all to you. Sorry, I hate to be a sarcastic sounding bitch, but your offer
  rings of insincerity and/or an unrealistic offer.

  Can you provide two veterinary references, plus
  three personal references not related to you? Are you a member of, or have you
  worked with any rescue groups? If so, can we have their contact info? Do you
  have pictures of your property and current cats? How large is your cat house?
  Are all cats kept indoors only, or contained in some kind of cat proof
  fencing? Do you cage cats, or let them roam freely in the house? How far do
  you pursue treatment for these cats, do you use any of the treatments listed
  on our website? At what point do you consider it time to let a cat go, and
  humanely euthanise him/her? Do you have a staff, or do you take care of all
  the litterboxes, feeding, medical care, vet visits, grooming, and socializing
  yourself?

  Maybe you are a kind person who just does not
  realize the scope of the problem outside your own little area. With an offer
  like you just made, you would be overrun with hundreds of cats within days to
  weeks. All of us here try to take in what we can, when we can. There is only a
  limited number of cats any one person can manage at one

  Rough concrete is hard to clean, even when
  sealed. Use a heavy-duty concrete floor PAINT. Roll it on thick, and do a few
  coats, enough to smooth out the surface. MUCH easier to clean that way. That's
  how most industrial plant floors are in the production rooms. You just hose it
  down, and squeegee the water down the drain. If you don't have a drain, it's
  still easy to clean with some spray cleaner and paper towels. I NEVER use a
  mop, mops just spread the gook around and press it into the
  corners.

You mean your cats don't eat scotch tape? A
couple of mine love it. They take it off any boxes, wherever. Sancho
chews on it ... eats it ... throws it up :)
He goes nuts for styrofoam ... eats it, throws it

  Clawing used to be an issue for me, they still
  shred the couch, but not the door frames anymore. I put long strips of regular
  clear packaging tape over all the door frames in scratching reach, and they
  decided they didn't like the feel of it anymore, because it's slippery and
  they can't dig in like on the bare wood, plus if they try too hard, the tape
  comes off and usually sticks on them, and they are running through the house
  with tape stuck on their bodies, like they are being attacked by a pack of
  coyotes... absolutely scares the bejesus out of them! I also, a few years
  back, invested in a absolutely WONDERFUL cat tree, I HIGHLY recommend the
  company to everyone now, my cats have SHREDDED this thing, and it still looks
  good, after 3 years and 5 cats. It was a bit pricey though http://www.4yourcat.com/pussicat/index.php
  I have the Mont Blanc tree, with the optional
  large base, plus I've added on a few extra parts over the years, which is what

Sunny James had a swollen upper lip on one side ... rodent
ulcer ... it disappeared on its own. At the time I could not remember what
I had read about it and asked in this group because I, too, was concerned about
it being contagious ... it is not. Usually from food allergies.
Since Sunny James' fat lip did not reoccur, I wondered if it had been an
allergic reaction to an insect bite.

  don't much trust. I've had bad luck there. The vet gave him a gentle

  getting an enema three years ago. Fu is 19 and very frail with
  hyperthyroidism and his intestinal cancer is probably out of
  remission.I've also done fluids today; he had 100ml last night and vet
  said to give him 100 ml twice a day. I gave him 50 ml early this morning,
  thinking that it might be too soon to give more as the last dose was

  It's been a painfulday. I lost my gentle giant Snowball this
  afternoon. I never expected that.
  He was breathing rapidly when I got home from the clinic. I thought at
  first he was stressed because of losing his girlfriend Flavia. I couldn't take
  the risk, tho, so I rushed him to the clinic. His lungs were full of fluid.
  Only 25 per cent was not full and even that was compromised. I discussed it
  with the same vet I saw this morning. I couldn't risk him dying while I was
  gone, and that seemed a very real possibility.
  Snowball was the biggest cat, a flamepoint, but he wouldn't hurt a soul.
  He was terribly timid. He stopped playing a couple of months ago, butI
  thought it was a lazy phase, because he had been pretty lazy before.
  The other little ones would enjoy batting him when he was below them on
  the tree. He never batted them back. he was too gentle. He knew he could
  squash them if he wanted too, but he didn't want to hurt them.
  I'm in shock for Snowball, and I guess Flavia, tho she has been so ill,
  and I need to process it.
  Please send prayers for my remaining Mickey and Momcat. They are going to
  be feeling very down and scared, and I'm scared they'll stop eating.
  I haven't read your replies yet because I just got back, and I have to
  leave in 30 mins, and I haven't finished packing.
  But there were lots--I'm so grateful. I'll read them when I get back.

  love and hugs to all

  LOL, that's why Doobie got neutered. We were
  sound asleep one night, and all of a sudden, it got warm and wet on our backs.
  He had peed about a gallon of stinky tom cat pee on top of all of our covers,
  at just about shoulder level, and it had soaked all the way through the
  comforter, blanket, sheet, and US! I was SO mad, I called the vet at 7:00 AM
  that morning, and said "I have a cat that needs to have his nuts chopped off
  TODAY!", and they fit him right in. He has NEVER peed on the bed since. I
  think when I told him "OH, buddy, you are gonna PAY for this one!" he realized
  I was serious when I loaded him up and took him to the vet first thing that
  morning, and that night when he was flopping around in a drunken stupor minus
  two testicles! To say he learned a lesson is putting it mildly. I know, it's
  mean to neuter a cat as punishment, but he REALLY asked for that one! He might
  have stayed a tom for his entire life, if he hadn't pulled that trick! Now,
  when he's being bad, and I say "Don't you EVEN think about it!" he generally
  stops! I also trim claws as punishment around here. One cat scratches another,
  that cat gets a claw trimming. They hate it, because they can't do wild
  acrobatics on the cat tree when they don't have claws. Oh, hey, you guys
  recall me saying how my girl cat doesn't use the box, but will go in front of
  it, or in an empty box with no filler? Well, onmany
  people'sadvise, I went and bought a new large UNcovered litterbox
  and I have not found any pee on the floor since. It WAS the covered boxes, she
  felt trapped in them, I think!
  Jennhttp://ucat.ushttp://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html

  ~~~
  How about being already in BED and sniffing and realize someone peed on
  it! I run a dehumidifier and I guess someone did it during the day and
  it had dried before I got in bed that night. agh!!!
Of the three cats removed, from what I recall her telling me over
the phone:
One is white and has very nasty damaged curled up and crusty ears with open
sores and scabs (possibly cancer, they are considering euthanasia)
Is this one of the FIV+ cats? He sounds like an FIV+ I helped
transport to AW maybe 2 years ago ... although I figure that kitty has already
died. This whole mess makes me sick to my stomach and my heart ache.
And I am so full up here already with kitties.
Ladies, I am in your cat pee club! It used to
be just Antonio marking and Elavil then Prozac helped ... didn't stop
altogether. Then after a couple of years why spend the money or give him
the drugs since he didn't stop and others started. Sam never peed outside
the box but I witnessed him fully dosing the (towel covered) toaster so I
suppose he is the guilty one for hitting the back of the cupboard. Minnie
Lu pees on the stove during the night or early morning. Now Emily (?)
began a spot in the garage. I think she is upset because the present three
kitties there with her harrass her and the past three liked her and either
played with her or ignored her. Most everything in my house has been "hit"
either marking or all out bladderful. Feliway didn't do anything. I
love them though.
  (literally), whenever, we, her humble servants, displease her. Gypsy is
  the one who all out urinates on soft bedding, (poor Zevon, his bed is her
  favorite spot!). Gypsy started the behavior when she was very, very sick.
  I think she preferred using cloth to the litter box, because she had sores
  on her legs and the litter was irritating to her sensitive skin. She was
  also so weak, that I'm guessing, that whatever was close by and absorbent
  wasfine with her, she too enjoys sleeping on the same stuff she will
  later pee on. (It ain't dog behavior, I'll tell you that!) She's so much
  stronger now, but she will still urinate on the occasional laundry
  pile.Even Ursa does that though. Poor Bruce was sent screaming from
  the bedroom the other week when he unknowingly tried to slip on a pair of
  pee-soaked jeans he'd left lying on the floor next to the bed. It was
Re: Misha
2005-06-18 Thread Del Daniels
Have you tried addingProzyme to a premium
non-graincanned food, it may help. I use Wellness but there are
others.
Also, one of my guys was quite poopy until he began IVD
(fm vet) Venison and Green Pea kibble. In a few days, he firmed up and for
the past three months no diarrhea.
Confining kittyto one room and spreading
sheets/towels on the floor helps cleaning up. A large dog crate or tall
kitty wire kitty condo will confine and you cangive Misha periodic
"recesses" into the room.
I had three kittens with a few months of constant
dripping; later an adult cat with the constant oozies for two months. Been
there with the clean up.
Good luck.
  For Misha's family,I don't know what your vet is talking
  about. FelV is not "attacking" her intestines. The problem with
  FeLV is that it weakens their immune systems and they have a tough time
  fighting off any other ailments, like colds etc. They are more prone to
  cancers too unfortunately, and the "drippy butt" symptom could be a sign of
  intestinal lymphoma. How long has Misha had diarrhea? From the
  little you told us about her symptoms it sounds like some sort of IBD
  (intestinal bowel disease) problem. You need more help from your
  vet. He needs to be treating whatever problems Misha has in the same way
  he would any other cat, (except quicker, with no 'wait and see' type
  attitude). IBD, (we don't know if this is Misha's problem), is usually
  treated with diet change. Some cats need to be taken off all dry food,
  sometimes they can't tolerate grains, sometimes vegetables, sometimes
  both. The people on the IBD list I belong to, (my Gypsy has a nasty case
  of IBD), advocate a raw diet (the group is:
  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FelineIBD/ ) This was the only
  thing that helped my cat, but you can try getting her off dry food and on one
  of the better canned foods first. Stick with one type of protein, (chicken,
  duck etc.), to help her system adjust.  There are also many homeopathic
  remedies that can help cats with diarrhea too, go to http://www.abchomeopathy.com/ and
  click on "remedy finder" to search for help with diarrhea. Vets usually
  prescribe steroids, (way too soon, imo), you want to try and eliminate
  whatever her system is reacting to first before you reach for the heavy
  artillery. When anyone has diarrhea, their body is essentially trying to
  'get rid' of whatever is upsetting their systems by expelling it as fast as
  they can. It's like an allergy, you have to figure out what to give
  Misha to eat that her body won't react to. Go check out http://www.catnutrition.org/ for some
  ideas.If your concern is the unhealthfulness of liquid diarrhea all
  over your house, I completely understand. You can confine Misha to a
  single room, (make it as comfortable as possible and visit her often, she's
  not going to understand why she's being locked away), until you get the
  'leaking butt' under control. If you are worried about Felv effecting
  you or your baby, your fears are unfounded. FeLV can not be transmitted
  to humans. If your concern is Toxoplasmosis, you are more than likely
  not in danger either, (please see recent archives addressing this
  concern). If you have had Misha with your other cats for six years, you
  do not have to be concerned about separating them. They either have Felv
  already, or they're not going to get it.Good luck, I wish you and your
  family the best,NinaPaul Jr wrote:
Misha is six years old and tested pos for FeLV. We have
had her for almost 6 1/2 years. She is in good health
and none of the other cats (all share the same wate
dish) have FeLV. Misha's FeLV shows up, according to
her vet by attacking her intestines. She has chronic
bouts of what we call drippy butt. She leaves little
presents aorund the house. She has been on various
medications and recently the vet suggested Kaopectate
or Pepto Bismo, which made her problem worse.(gave her
pain and lots of diahreha) I have read aobut
maybe ease the symptoms. Does anyone else have a cat
  Hey there Del! Good point - absolutely, it can
  cause diarrhea in animals and in people. If so, you back off
  of the quantity a little, and keep doing that till no
  diarrhea.I take it regularly too, not Belfields though, I take Rainbow
  Light Powder. The bottle of Belfields Vit C has
  directions - but they're downstairs, and I can't remember what
  it says. But in general, I've always used about 200-500mg
  daily (if I can get disciplined enough to do daily). Start
  low, even lower than that if you wish, and build up.Dr. Belfield is
  the vet who says that he's had FELV+ cats go negative after several
  months of the Vit C therapy. Well my # of cats increased, and
  my discipline decreased, so I stopped the vitamin C to adjust myself
  for a while. Have to start it back up.Seems like it was Dr. Pitcairn's
  book that said, for upper respiratory infections, to give 250 mg Vit
  C, plus 250mg Lysine twice daily. I used to do that for Lucy,
  Oh, how horrible. I think you are doing the right thing about the
  chemo if he is that stressed by it, actually. What your vet said about
  the steroid shots does not make ANY sense to me at all. If he is on pred, he
  can do steroid shots. In fact, when Simon, my hearthrob boy with a similar
  personality, came out of partial remission from chemo and his liver values got
  so bad that the oncologist said he could not do any more chemo and I should
  take him home to die, upon my request he gave him a depo shot and a dex
  shot. I then gave him another dex shot the next day at home. I don't
  know if you were on the list at that point, but I and everyone else on the
  list thought he was dying. I stopped all medical treatment and force-feedings
  and just held him for days. he got to the point he could not stand on his
  own. And then suddenly one night, three days after last eating, he sat
  up in the night and asked for water, then food, and by morning was walking
  around and his jaundice was almost gone. I took him to the oncologist and his
  liver values were down so far he could get chemo, and he went back into
  partial remission for a month and felt really great-- running and playing and
  the works. So if he could get tons of steroids when the oncologist
  thought he was sending him home to die, I do not see why your cat can't.
  The oncologist's explanation for Simon getting better was that the steroids
  shrunk the lymphoma in his liver and bone marrow, but that it still took a few
  days for his body to flush the bilirubin out enough to make him feel
  better. So the steroids really gave him another shot.
  Thinking about the chemo again, which chemo did your vet give him?
  Because Elspar is the one they normally start with if a cat is already sick,
  and it is just a subcutaneous shot I think. It is not IV or
  anything. And it sometimes kills off a lot of the lymphoma in itself and
  makes them feel better. And Cytoxin is just a pill, and that is one of
  the other ones that they do second or third. is there a way he can just get
  Thanx michelle- we tried chemo but he was fighting and screaming
the chemo, I'd rather him not have to deal with even if it will make him
feel better if he hates it that much. I asked about steroid injections
but my vet said no due to the advanced stage- not sure of the exact medical
reason though. I'll pick their brains on Monday- thanx for that
tip. He had absolutely no symptoms until June 1st and was
diagnosed on June 4thHe had a clear chest xray in February. Its
one of the fastest moving we've seen yet. We actually do alot of chemo
(both positives and negatives) The results are great for negatives and your
right it does help the positives for atleast a couple months more often than
not, I wish he would let me, but maybe he already knows what I don't
yet. In the meantime he seems to be comfortable, he has trouble
swalowing and he is hungry and tries to eat which is the worst part of it
yet. His borthers and sisters are being very comforting to him and he
spends his days sleeping right inthe middle of the walkways in our house,
he's still using his box and like I said eating a little bit. I have a
feeling though that he's almost ready. It sooo sad he is sooo young
and was definately the hearthtrob of the house, you know those cats that
anytime your friends meet him he was always there favorite because he
would! climb your leg if he had to for attention, he was a very
kissy man, and stuck in everyone's minds. Even my boyfriends friends
special in their own way- but some are extrodinary.
I know people on this list make
a lot of comments on this, but I also personally want to thank you for all
the support you give for me and for my babies, and for anyone who may need
the support for that matter –
I really love this list as we
can talk about anything (any OT stuff) –
I used to be on FIP list since I
have many many corona virus kitties and I was very concerned about FIPs –
but the mediator on the list is very controlling and mean – if you questions
anything she says she gets made and took you off the list – she only
believes in certain treatment and she doesn’t let you argue about it
otherwise – and she does not allow any OT subjects – I really liked everyone
else on that list, but couldn’t stand the mediator (and so did other people
on the list) –
Anyway, thank you so very much
for your support – don’t’ know what to do without you guys – I am glad that
I found you!
  Wow!I couldn't squeeze under the van, but stretched out and gave
  Sam some Fancy Feast. I had to slide out at bit and at some point
  Sam got scared and ran into the back yard. We attracted some of the
  under a vacant house, where there was a live possum and an armadillo, so
  pretty soon he was outa there - I was glad! Headed for the next
  house and under it. By that time, Susan made it over to where it was
  all happening.Fortunately, the house he was under had only one
  opening, and had a pretty neat large crawl space. He kept hiding
  behind the big air conditioning stuff and we couldn't get to
  him.Susan - in spite of spiders, dirt and claustrophobia -
  crawled under and set a couple of traps laced with cat food, mackerel,
  salmon juice, and a cup of milk. We sat in the driveway just about
  all day, except for a 2 hour break, checking under the house and eating
  junk food.About 9:15 or so tonight, Sam just walked up to the access
  door. Susan said, he's right there! We talked to him and I reached
  my hand in and petted him, I think he remembered me - nd pretty soon
  grabbed him. He tried to get away, and Susan scruffed him and got
  Thank you all for the kind words about Sammy...Sammy did
  have a full life and an interesting story...He originally came to me as SD
  named after theSuffuc Downs horse race track near Boston MA.where he
  came from...When feeding the ferals therethere was one cat that came up to
  be patted andpicked up...They decided to rescue him and whenthey
  brought a carrier for him he walked in himself...They brought
  him to the vet for a check up..FeLV+...But he was such a good boy they
  decided to tryone time on the internet...I had spent some timein that
  area years ago so I wrote back and said Iwould take
  him...His teeth were all rotten and he had to be
  neuteredbefore I could bring him home but from the very1st moment that
  I saw him he was my cat..He joinedthe others in my FeLV room with no
  problem at alland he always slept by my head at night...He
  liked to sit in the window and watch outside...He would have liked to go
  outside againButone day soon after I got him it was
  snowingand he jumped in the window and took one lookand jumped back
  down...He knew what snow wasand didn't want to be outside that
  dayA while later I got a call from the rescue person
  thatI had gotten him from and they found a worker at thetrack that had
  asked about him...It seems there wasan old woman that had lived in one of
  the horse barnsand his name was Sammy and he had lived with the
  oldwoman but she had cancer and had passed away...The man was happy
  that Sammy had a good homebecause he knew him from
  before.Sammy was old and I feed him special food which
  heate well but never put on much weight and he hadarthritis but he
  never showed any sign of anythingunusual until Saturday night when he
  didn't finish his foodthe way he usually did and was shacking his
  head...I thought it might be one of his remaining teeth...Then on
  Sunday he just looked at his food but wouldn'teat...An hour later I found
  him with blood coming outof his mouthThe vet said to watch him and put
  me onfor early appointment for Monday morning.Mondaymorning he
  couldn't close his mouth with a huge swellingunder his
  tongue...The vet said it was most likely a cancer tumor with
  aburst blood vessel and the whole lower jaw was involved...He would
  have had to remove the lower jaw to get ridof it and because of his age he
  probably wouldn't havemade itHe was in pain and the only humain thing
  todo was to help him on to the Rainbow BridgeIt all
  happened so quickly that I was just studded by it alland I miss my old
  friend but perhaps I will get to see himagainIf you
  would add his name to the CLS list that would be
Interferon mixing question re refreezing
2005-06-01 Thread Del Daniels
I have the initial mix of Interferon with saline
frozenin99 syringes - used up the first syringe which was mixed into
saline and frozen (first freeze) in 100syringes.
My question: Now I need to mix another batch
... thaw a concentrated syringe and mix with saline will provide 100 syringes of
ready-to-use ...CAN I FREEZE THESE? If not, I will only use three months
of interferon from this batch, and will have to mix another batch in three
months. Which would be okay, I just need to know. If it can refreeze
a second timeI will have some to last a looong time. Presently have
three kittiestaking it.
I hope I have made my question clear.
  I am very sorry to tell you that Jersey died today- 11am.
  He was very sick the last two days. I was going to take him today to the
  vet clinic Bonnie reccomended me but it was late...
  I think the kidney problems and not the leukimia is the cause of his death.
  He was crying like a baby when I touched him. He didn't want any food and just
  a little bit water. He was also very anemic.
  I found the strength to bury him in a very nice place in my area. So,
  please put him in the Candle Light Service (May 2003- June 1-2005)
  I wish to thank you again for all advices and help. I am going to read the
  letters in this forum because I might find a way to help you or find out
  something I have to know for my future pets.
  I strongly believe that a personal expericene might be much more valuable
  than pure theoretical knowledge. That is why I like this forum and for 10 days
  I lerant many many new things for the cats.
  I don't believe in the death and I think the place pets are going
  after it is still a nice one.
  On the other hand,though I believe that we have to fight for
  theirlife till the semi- end. (I know Belinda will agree with me 100%).
  And not the vets but God knows how longour pets will live.
  I really wish that XXI century will bring the medication against cancer. It
  will come from herbs maybe...as a famous fortuntellerVanga used to
  say.
  By the way, I have some Interferon left, some predinsoline and glavamox
  left. I will keep the medications and if anybody needs them, you are welcome
  to write me. If anybody is passing by Toledo, OH, can pick them.
  Thanks, I gave her a very small kitten litter
  pan, but you are right, she still hurts when she gets into it (it has 3 inch
  tall sides). I was thinking I needed something shallower, and you are right, I
  DO have a 9x11 Pyrex baking pan that would be ideal! Thanks for reminding me!
  She seems the most comfortable if she is on a
  heating pad. I have one of those microwavable ones (with the soft gel inside),
  but it gets cold after a couple of hours, and then I have to move her a little
  to get it out and re-heat it. Does anyone know ofa brand of electric
  heating pad that does not get too hot, but just warm? It's been my experience
  that most electric heating pads get too hot to lay on for extended periods,
  and I'm not sure she CAN get up on her own if it gets too hot. Brenda, the
  Sphynx rescue lady I help out even had a kitten DIE from being left on a
  heating pad, so I'm being very cautious.
  Jennhttp://ucat.ushttp://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html
  ~~~Hi,
  To help her not to move very much and not to step very high you maywant to
  try the following: For a "Litter Pan" that is easy to use takeapart a
  carrier, using the bottom part put a large "Pyrex" pan filledwith litter
  in it. The reason for this is using the bottom of thecarrier with cut down
  on the litter being kicker all over the place. Andthe reason for the
  "Pyrex" pan is due to its weight it will not betipped over and also
  it is so easy to disinfect.

  I look at it this way... if they wanted the cat
  in the first place, they would have posted her as missing at all the local
  vet's offices, so I've done enough already.

  I just went to tend to her, and she can't get
  up. Her back is very unstable now. She is going to need surgery to stabilize
  the fractures (I am sure it is her back now). I'm going to call around
  tomorrow and see how much it is going to cost. If there is any way I can get
  her fixed, I will do it. I REFUSE to let this happen AGAIN. It's almost as if
  I have been given another chance to do the right thing this time. I don't know
  if you remember me ever telling you guys about Do-Dah... he broke his back,
  and at the time I was told to euthanise him and was not given any other
  options, and even if I had had them at the time, I could never have raised the
  funds to get him fixed (I was 8 months pregnant at the time and couldn't
  work). Then there was KiKi, he was hit by a car and I did not get to him in
  time, and he died because I wasn't responsible enough to keep him indoors. And
  then Moogie, who looked as sick as this cat did when I first got her, she
  died, and I've already gottenBones past that point with home nursing.
  This is SO deja-vu, it's almost pushing me in the direction of believing in a
  higher power. KiKi was hit by a car, most likely this cat was too; Do-Dah
  broke his back, most likely this cat has too; Moogie was bone thin,
  dehydrated, and weak, this cat was too. I've regretted my mistakes the last
  time for years, and have always wanted to "make it right", and now, here it
  is, right in front of me. I am NOT going to let this cat die from injuries
  that can be fixed. I don't care if I have to work 60 hour weeks and beg on the
  street with a tin cup. I'm going to find out which vet around here can DO this
  kind of surgery tomorrow, and I'm going to ask them if I can arrange to send
  donations directly to their office. If that's doable, then I will do a very in
  depth donations campaign online and see if I can get some funding that way
  too. Of course, I plan to spend every dime I have to spare on her too. Pay
  rent, buy cat food, buy the minimal amount of human groceries, and put
  everything else into Bones. I am NOT going to be forced into the same corner
  again, I refuse to take no for an answer this time. I will buy this cat a
  wheelchair if she needs one. This is not happening to me again! If this is
  some sort of test, I will pass it, If this is some sort of redemption, I will
  be redeemed. I am not going to fail, I will not let this cat down! I know I
  must sound crazed, but if you had been in my shoes, you would be thisway
  too.

  Well, I made it a bit bigger, anymore and my
  signature wont wrap correctly, hope it helps. Nothing I can do about the
  background, sorry, if I make it any lighter, I wont be able to look at it
  myself (I'm a bit disabled with the vision problem, sorry). I did lighten it
  as much as I can, it's now light gray, instead of medium gray. (Or it should
  be, anyways, but then someone told me it was purple, and I have no idea how
  that happened, so who's to say what color it really is? You tell me,
  OK?)

  You can change the text size of any email or
  webpage on your own computer, assuming you are using a Windows computer, and
  running Outlook Express for your email. I'm using Windows 2000 and Outlook
  Express 6, and on my screen, if you look at the top of this message's window,
  do you see where it says "View"? If you see that, click on it, and then that
  will open a drop down menu, then mouse over where it says "Text Size", and
  then that should open up some options of smallest, small, medium, bigger, and
  biggest (or something to that effect). Just choose to make it bigger. That
  works for any email. The same option exists in Internet Explorer (just fish
  around in the menus at the top of your window, and you'll find it eventually),
  if you ever go to a website with the text too small to read. It may not be in
  exactly the same place on your computer if you are running Windows 98 or
  Windows XP, but so long as you are running some version of Outlook Express for
  your email, it should be there to fix the text sizes in email for you. I'm
  running Outlook Express 6, but it should be the same in older (or newer)
  versions, with minor grammatical changes.

  Now, if you're going to a website (like your
  ISP's website, or yahoo, or hotmail)to check your emails, then I am not
  sure you can do anything on your end to make it bigger.

  Thanks to all of you who took the time to respond about Andy. I do
  appreciate it. Barb, Sharon, Yvonne, Terrie, Belinda and anyone else I
  may have missed- it was good to hear from you again. To the others- it
  was good to "meet" you for the first time.

  I did take him to the vet first thing this morning. Dr. Caldwell
  was in surgery so I saw Dr. Baxter instead. Also a very nice man.
  Every person in that place has just been wonderful! He looked at Andy's
  chart and said he hoped I didn't think of them as "bad" since my very first
  experience there has been this ordeal with my baby boy.

  Anyway, he was very straight forward and said while he wanted to commend
  me on an outstanding job taking care of a Felv+ cat for this long, that there
  was not much he could do and that this was the beginning of the end.
  Whatever was going on had his insides in shreds. The vet said even if I
  WANTED him to run tests, he was 99% sure that Andy would not come out of the
  sedation in that state. Barb- it was so strange. He held up Andy's
  face so we were eye to eye and said "Mrs. Laws, tell me, do you really see
  Andy there anymore?" And the answer was no. So I started bawling
  and babbling about how I didn't warn my husband that this was a possibility
  this morning and he just went to work without saying goodbye. I mean I
  was a crying freak and I just met the man! So he gave me a small TOWEL
  and said I was not having a "Kleenex cry" so to take a towel. Then he
  told me we were not making the call right now, and not like that. He
  gave him a bag of fluids and a shot of Prednisone and told me to talk to my
  husband first. I went back to work, then came and got Andy at
  lunch. I took him home and spent the afternoon with him. He pooped
  blood all over himself TWICE. The second time I was washing him off in
  the sink and he had one of his episodes (Dr. Baxter said these were probably
  small strokes rather than seizures). But this time it lasted a long,
  long time. He quit breathing and went limp in my arms. No noise,
  no chest movement. He was gone. So I laid him on the floor on the
  towel and my phone rang,it was my husband. So I was hysterical
  telling him Andy just died in my arms and I was freaking out. Right
  then, Andy let out this gaspy, panting type breath and started
  convulsing. Then he just kind of sat up alittle bit like nothing
  happened! But he was dead I tell you. So then I really freaked out
  and said "he's not dead!" I mean screaming it. So Abe (husband)
  asked whatfreeway the newvet was off of since he was on his way
  home. I told himwhereit was and hejust said "I am
  meeting you there right now." So I knew. I was not going to keep
  him through the night to spend a little more time together. That
  was it. He was suffering and I was thinking ofwhat
  I needed to be okay and not Andy. I wrappedhim in
  a towel and drove to the vet. I called first and again, just crying into
  the phone I managed to get out "I had my cat in there this morning and..."
  that's all I could get out. The poor girl who answered said "I'm so
  sorry Jamie, wewill see you in a minute." She knew my name and I
  hadn't even mentioned the cat's name. Guess I was the only bawling woman
  in with a cattoday. Anyway, I managed to choke out "but you close
  in 15 minutes." She just said "we'll be here."It was so
  wonderful to be treated with compassion. My old vet would have said
  "well ER hours start in 15 minutes so just be prepared to pay double."

  Anyway, I met Abe there and Dr. Baxter took us back to the treatment
  area. Andy laid on the table very still and I petting him and kissed his
  little face as the vet gave him the injection. I have never
  witnessedananimal bing PTSin real life. I'm sorry if
  this is all too graphic but it helps me to get it out. I was surprised
  that his eyes didn't close and nothing changed. I didn't realize he was
  gone until the vet said "ok, his heart stopped." Then I lost
  it.The "never agains"hit me like a ton of bricks. He
  will never do his cold nose bumping and tiny front teeth nipping on my
  husband's inner arm trying to get him to pet him. He will never serve as
  my "fun police" when I want my great dane to stop bringing his toy to
  me. I would just lay it on the coffee table right next to Andy who was
  always ready with his right hook. That kept Apollo in check. He
  would NOT go for that toy if Andy was sitting by it. :) I will
  never again have my soft little lap warmer as I sit at my computer. I
  will never. There are

  She's gone..Akira crossed over on May 18th at 9:30 amShe fought
  so hard to stayI fought so hard for her...this is so hard..let me start
  from the beggining.

  I found her May of 2001, as a little angel in disquiseshe was under a
  car, in the rain, soaking wet, at my work.on a cold day.My assistant
  manager acutally found her adn came running back in.. "Lisa there's a kitten
  under a car...come quick" So I grabbed a can of kitty food and ran
  outside...she was so tiny! and WOA was she full of spunk..even as
  bad off as she was...she uttered one little valiant hiss at usthen she
  smeeled the food..adn forgot she was afraid..We wrapped her up in my sweater
  adn ran inside the store..at which point she decided to start SCREAMING at
  us...(needless to say we got some strange looks from customers)
  Once I had her settled in a little box..I realized how bad off she wasonly
  weighing 1 lb (mabey a bit more) and she looked to be about 4 months
  oldshe was SICK..her eyes sealed shut with gunk, something had attacked
  her...picked her right up..she had scratches on one side and a abcess on the
  othershe ate an entire cann of Friskiesafter she was done ..this
  little tiny soul...who more than likely had never known a kind human..or one
  at allwas begging to be petted..she would jsut purr, and purr, and
  purr..you would have never thought a sound so deafening could come out of such
  a little body..then 3 days later my heart sank..we found she was FeLV +...
  I was so scared and torn..she had touched my heart so much...just in those 3
  days.I decided to try and save her...and I did...she fought so hard..put
  up with me poking and proding her, shoving God knows what down her throat to
  get meds,and extra nurishment into her...we were fighting alot...she had FeLV,
  was anemic very badly, had worms, a kitten flu, and URI, an abcess on her
  side...it took a whole 3 days for her to even have a bowl or urine movement at
  all..her body absorbed everythingand she took it..with out so much as a
  complaint...she was so strong...on her check up her blood values were better
  and she had gained 2 lbs..in a WEEK.we were on the roadbut still I had
  to figure out how to beat this FeLV..I didn't know what it was.So I got on
  line..and everything I found was so disheartening..tehn I found this ONE LONE
  SITEthe FeLV siteand it changed mine..and her lifeI got the
  Interferon, researched supplements, you name it..she got it...and she kept
  growing and growing.and getting more and more spunky..this little girl had
  life in her.How would she handle the dogs Hum...well that didn't
  go over very well (mabey a dog attacked her???) more work to do..she
  had to be able to get along with them..adn not stress herself outso we
  worked,and slowly but surely she was ok...adn tehn even liked the dogs..and
  would play with my mini dachshund Lancelot...they would play "hide and go
  pounce" which in their terms was taking turns chasing each other around
  teh house..(and let me tell you...it is awful funny to see a 10 dog run by
  with a 4 lb kitten on his tail..with her tail up in the air..in hot
  pursuit)...then she would jump onto a chair..adn he would be looking all
  over for her with no luck..when she would POUNCE on top of him..and off they
  would go again...for hours!!! She had such a love for life she slept
  with us every day...every night before bed and every morning before we got up
  we would play "cover monsters" where she would attack the evil moving thing
  under the coversthen in came her kitty brotherwho we trapped feral,
  fearing he was related to her..as similar as they were...and that he too would
  have this awful disease..well he didn't ..YEA..but what to do now..more
  researchwe let them live togeather..SHE HATED HIM..absloutly loathed
  him..she would hiss and attack (a whole nother side of my "angel" I had
  never seen ) Indy...bless his heart just kept insisiting she
  like him though...he took her abuse and purred and cued back to herhow
  could he have not won her over?

  Then one summer we got a chance to got to the outer banks of NC for
  vacationfor free..couldn't pass that up...but what about Akira..couldn't
  trust anyone to care for her...to make sure she got the perfect balance of
  supplements...so she came with us on a 8 hr drive and a 3 hr ferry ride...and
  she was a champ..slept in my lap the whole time...adn once we got to the
  house..she of course hidin a closet..but soon she was out and
  about..exploringalways

  Thank you everyone for all your prayers,
  Akira is resting peacefully on my bed right now, very calm and
  sereneshe is dyingwe have decided to let her go on her own

  They got the blood results on her back Saturday..but they were
  incomplete...the CBC was missing...the results were so scewed and far fetched
  teh tech's at the lab didn't think they were right so they were waiting until
  Monday (today) to have a Pathologist review them. Akira's vet called
  them adn asked for the numbers anyways...her white cell count was
  400,000! and her lymphocytes (sp) were high tooshe has
  cancer...so that is what caused her to quit eating...well...her liver
  values are 16 times normal.and she is hypothyroid (I think that is
  the one..it is the one cats dont usually get) she is in liver
  failure(fatty liver ) from not eatingthe vet said that in healthy (non
  FeLV+) cats the survival rate is 70% with intensive carefor just teh fatty
  liver alone (in the stage she was in) and by that she meant a permanent
  feeding tube, 8 months or more of feeding her 6-10 times a day, and fighting
  any infection she would get from the feeding tube.but then on top of that
  she has cancer..somewhere...and we would have to find and treat that as
  well..so ultrasounds, x rays, biopsies...to even see if the cancer is
  treatableplus the treatment/surgery IF it wasPLUS the Fatty
  liver...PLUS the FeLV.and she
  probally wouldn't make it anyways...not to mention the tourture of all those
  procedures,a nd staying at teh vets office for a least another week...I
  decided to bring her home.What made it so much worse is I had to work this
  weekend..from 7 30 am until 10 pm both Saturday adn Sunday..so I got to
  hardley spend any time with her until today
  So thank you whoever sent the number for Janet the ACI called her adn
  she spoke with Akira...Akira does NOT want to go to the vet..nor does she want
  any help...right now...she wants to go at home with us around...so so be
  itShe wants to live every remaining minute of her life in peace and
  home...Janet was complelty amazed at how powerful, beautifull, nad strong
  Akira's soul was. Which was comforting..but not a surprise..as many
  others (amature) have said the same things...Janet says she has only
  encountered a few other Angelic Beings in physical forms before...and Akira is
  one of them..

  So just an update on her..and how things are going...she is calm, not in
  pain, and peaceful, and ready to go...she understands what is happening, and
  is ready for itPlease pray for her,and send all the suppportiive energy
  you can to herIprobally wont be on for a few days at least...but thank you

I am so very behind in reading the posts
... however, I do have a female FIV+ and there was another female FIV+ also
taken from the same house. It was a terrible living situation and the cats
were taken out and shared with shelters and trusted kitty people. I took
three catsand Tabitha tested positive. The vet guestamated she is
one year old. The other positive was taken by a vet who immediately put
her down after testing. "No point in fooling with the positives."
Iheard her say she would but didn't know about the test results until
afterwards.We have no idea if the two females were related.

  It IS strange, isn't it, how cool the fiv cats are! My fiv cat was
  just as you described. The MOST laid back, friendly, neat cat I've ever
  had. HUGE! Especially when I first rescued him and he wasn't
  neutered yet. (I don't know his age, but he was old and died of hepatic
  liver disease. We didn't know his status until he got sick with that. He
  just started losing weight, and by the time I noticed (under all the hair), it
  was too late. Everyone loved him. Even those who aren't too fond
  of my menagerie loved Brutus.

  A vet came to visit our school this year with a huge cat. She
  passed him around the room, etc... like a puppy. She said he was one of
  the only cats she'd ever been able to take out to schools, etc because
  nothing bothered him. He was fiv positive and lived with her other cats at
  home. Some vets file their incisors. I don't remember if she said
  they'd done that or not on this guy.

  Come to think of it, I've never heard of anyone with a female fiv
  positive. Strange.

around shaking theirheads wondering how they ever ended up in such a

volunteers because theywere just too irresistable.i have two

  Hi all,

  I may be getting a new addition to the family. That's the good
  part. The part that makes me madder than hell is that a 'family' turned
  in their 22 year old blind cat to a local shelter. Talk about beyond
  belief. How can someone do that?

  Anyway, if no one elsesteps up before I get off at 3:00 I'm
  going to go get her tomorrow. I can't stand to think of her living out
  her last days or being euthanized in a
  shelter.Question: What should I do about felv
  vaccines? Should a cat that old get vaccinations? I wouldn't want
  to expose her to my group without them. Also, being blind, should I
  start her out in a cage? Any advice welcomed!!

  We'll probably head to the vet and spend a few hundred dollars first
  thing. lol. Actually I hope my vet will take pity on me. I'll let you
  know how it goes.

  Also, I mentioned this to my mother and she was VERY negative about me
  taking her.It really hurt my feelings. I've been worried about

  Fortunately, I can usually con the boys. It helps when they haven't been

  Del,
  We have used Pepcid for mant kiitties at the
  shelter. One thing the vet did stress was only to use the tablet (original)
  form, due to diff. in ingredients in other forms.

  She also said administer 15 min, before meals, and
  she realizes w/ meals we were not on a 12 hour schedule between feedings. So I
  don't think the times you are talking about would make a
  diff.

  I just wouls NOT use the gelcapsespecially after
  discussing Pepcid w/ our vet. Like I said, she STRESSED use only the original
  form.

Del,
Yes, we picked up the generic @ WalMart for a
very cheap price. They were 5mg, instead of 10mg, but for our
Gertrude it was easier to half them than quarter
them.
Also, some of The Dollar stores carry the
generic it's the same darn thing.
And they do carry 10 mg generic @ WalMart
too!
Hope this helps!

Another Pepcid AC question

2005-03-31 Thread Del Daniels

I bought the Gelcaps Pepcid AC and
the ingredients do not compare with the regular Pepcid AC square tablets ... the
gelcaps are solid and can be quarteredbutlist several other
ingredients and I am reluctant to use them unless some of you already have used
them without any problems with the kitty. Of course, the sales receipt is
already in the trash :( but I prefer to throw them out then have a bad reaction
for kitty.

Also ... in the morning Noah has 1/4 Pepcid about
7am,15 minutes before his breakfast ... should he have the next one 15
minutes before his supper which would be about 5pm or is that too close together
to give the meds? Or should I wait until later in the evening even though
he has already eaten? I feel quite stupid about the best way to give them
tohis best advantage. I'd really appreciate the input,his
mouth is a mess of sores and he has spewed some projectile vomiting ... clear
bright yellow liquid. The vet saw him last week, there were eosinophils
along with mucho bacteria. He had a Depo injection and on Clavamox, with
very slow improvement. Our vet is on vacation this weekand while I
could call him I prefer not to unless it is a direemergency.

  Hi Del,

  I've never used the gelcaps; I only ever used the tablets. I'd
  guess that the other ingredients are probably just some kind of binders or
  fillers, but like you, I be reluctant to use it without knowing for sure that
  it was OK.

  In terms of the dosage, my understanding for medications like Pepcid is
  that the interval that's important is giving it before meals, not how far
  apart the meals are. I'm not saying this very well (having a severely
  "blonde" day), but unlike antibiotics which would be given at timed intervals,
  the tummy medicines are given prior to eating, whatever time that might
  be.

Re: OT:FIV false positive?

2005-03-28 Thread Del Daniels

I'm not very up to date on reading the posts lately
so may easily have missed something ... but most of us have our FIV+ mixed with
our negatives unless the positive is aggressive since it usually takes a deep
bite to pass the disease. FeLV+ is more contagious and not as many are
mixed with negatives. Is there another reason to separate her if she is
FIV+?

  Subject: OT:FIV false positive?

  Buddha (Squeekie)’s blood work
  came back from a lab – when we did ELISA in house clinic test, she was
  negative on FeLV/FIV – then, Antech lab did the virus test again on ELISA (by
  mistake since I did not ask them to do so, but they did it anyway by mistake),
  but on their ELISA test from the lab, the FIV came back as
  positive.

  I had a similar thing happened to
  one my other kitties, Rikki – when I first rescued him, the ELISA (both in
  house test and antech lab) came back as negative, 2 months later, we re-tested
  him again, and the antech came back as positive on FIV (did not do in house at
  this time) – but I have always felt (just a feeling) that it was false
  positive for some reason, but the meantime, he was isolated from others just
  in case – and two or three years
  later (which is sometime last year), I tested him again, and this time, in
  ELISA, both in house clinic and Antech lab came back as Negative, and
  ELISA/Western Blot by Cornell came back as negative, but DNA test through
  another lab came back as Positive – which was very confusing. And I was supposed to send it again to
  UC Davis for another DNA test as recommended by Cornell – but never have – so
  he is still isolated. Also, he is
  asymptomatic (no symptoms at all).
  Again, I have three other FIV (definite FIV) boys, but they are all
  healthy, unlike FeLV, many cats don’t necessary die from FIV, but die with FIV
  – so it’s hard to tell from their heath condition sometimes. But because of
  the inconsistency, he is still alone, which makes me feel very badly. I should
  probably do another test and see what happens
  soon.

  Anyway, I guess I have to do the
  same thing for Buddha (run western blot and another ELISA, and possibly IFA
  and DNA test – I had to anesthetize her to draw blood last time, and probably
  have to do so again, which I hate to do, but, I really can’t merge her with
  other kitties without knowing for sure of the results because of the risks to
  other cats –anyway, I am writing this to you in case you have any insights on
  this situation.

  Unlike FeLV virus, once you have
  the FIV virus in the body, the virus tends to stay – so once it’s positive,
  s/he will always be positive – so inconsistency of the results (from positive
  to negative) comes from false test result, that’s what I read and
  heard.

  Everyone, regardless, please pray
  for Buddha that she does not have FIV – I really wanted her to merge with the
  cats in the main house – which will make it difficult otherwise. Again, thank you for listening, and I
  appreciate any advise or
  input.

  Thank
  you.

  I can't tell you much about their service since I haven't received it

  even with pred and flagyl, he's still having diarrhea.

  the doctor mentioned wasPrednisone, which I am familiar with because of a
  friend with Crohn'sDisease. The Doctor indicated that this would be
  a longer term treatment,but while having a different effect, would be
  slightly less effective thanthe near term relieve of a diuretic. I
  believe the he was indicating thetumor was too large for the steroids to
  have a great effect; and that whileprolonging life, life would be less
  comfortable.I've been making sure Loki is having some wonderful days,
  although it's beendifficult at times with the rain we've been
  having. He doesn't normally getto go outside, except for the large
  deck, which he loves. In good weather,the deck has always been open
  to him. However, these days, I've let himoutside to explore and
  wander in the wild grass around the house. He lovesit and has all
  the energy for it. I think it is wonderfully distracting
  forhim.His breathing has been the same. Getting rest is a
  difficult for him, butthe good days, I feel, have offset the labored
  breathing.Evaluating every breath, every movement; every happy purr,
  head-but,kneading action, and roll onto the back; every nap, sleep, eating
  habit,toilet deposit; every behavioral change, uncomfortable sleeping or
  relaxingposition, has been stressful for me. When to let go is so
  hard, but I amtrying to be unbiased with the decision about when his
  quality of life is nolonger good.This early evening, I think I am
  noticing more labored breathing. I am alsonoticing more difficulty
  with finding the right position to sleep. He isfavoring harder,
  flatter surfaces to sleep on so as not to impede breathing.I am
  accommodating this with soft towels on the hard surfaces he favors,with an
  extra small roll for his chin to rest upon. This is desirable
  forhim. Of course, this is now very distressing for me, as I am
  feeling thetime is near to let him go. I will hope for a clear
  morning/day for him toexplore outside, then reevaluate.No need to
  respond to this. I just needed to let you know and to write itdown

Re: large sheets for bedspreads - fleece

2005-03-14 Thread Del Daniels

I buy remnants of fleece and have them in many
baskets around the house for kitties to sleep on ... unfortunately my Noah loves
the fleece and drags it around in his mouth and it is his "woman" so to speak
... He was neutered early but has never lost the urge, for ten years he has done
this, guess he will not outgrow it. A large enough piece to cover a twin
bed would be a challenge for him. LOL There are some beautiful fleece
patterns, too.

  Del,

  Go to the fabric store and pick up a nice, patterned or solid color pc.
  of low pyle fleece to throw over the bedspread/comforter. Its a bit
  heavier than the sheet and initiates instand nap-attackes, so they never quite
  get a chance to make a real mess of it. (Fleece is perfectb/c its
  realitively inexpensive if you buy it raw, and you don't have to hem it.
  Holes from claws just close back up and it can be washed quite a bit and still
  look good.)
